CanadaWedding Apparel
So I was browsing the internet looking for some ideas for a dress to wear at the civil ceremony and stumbled upon this:

http://www.lightinth...g-Apparel_c1180

I am a bit wary of buying on the internet, but the price looks amazing! I haven't heard anything good or bad! It will be hard to find anything now a days that is made in Canada or made in USA when it comes to clothes, or any electronic for that matter, I guess I did not realize wedding dresses are the same way. Anyways just wanted to share this site with anyone who may be interested.

Thanks!

So my fiance and i are trying to plan our wedding, and have decided we want to get married in vegas, it just works for us, has anyone else planned their wedding in vegas? I'm just here looking for the best packages and all that, any suggestions?

We were looking at getting married in vegas, but simply just cannot to afford to travel to vegas after moving to the US and saving for fees and time I cannot work. We thought of bringing both families to vegas and having a big wedding and reception there.well (80-100 is big for us)..if you are thinking of doing that PM me and I will let you know of a place we had thought of that had great reviews.

That's true I guess. Hopefully my fiance and I will get enough vacation time to visit his family no matter where they end up. We just have to move where ever the IT jobs are which probly means the Northwestern US.

The most forgotten part of Canada is the prairies, I am still living in Canada and have seen a big time growth in my province and the city I live in. Years ago it used to be everyone moving to Alberta, well now those people are slowly moving back because the quality of life is better and the costs of living in the cities in Alberta have skyrocketed! There was actually a housing shortage in Saskatchewan! There are so many jobs in the province of Saskatchewan that are going untouched, we are experiencing a huge healthcare professional shortage (recruiting nurses from the Philipinnes) and also more interest in natural resources. Anyways, just my two cents, Saskatchewan is definitely worth some research.

CanadaG-325A
Hey everyone! I am working on getting my G-325A form completed and it took me over an hour just to complete it. Due to college, spending some summers in Canada, I have had many addresses and employers in the past 5 years. I did one supplemental sheet for employers and one for addresses as there was not enough room on the G-325A. My question is, the G-325A duplicates itself four times, do I have to print off and sign 4 duplicate sheets for each category? It sounds like the common sense thing to do, but I am just looking to see what others have done or would do in my situtation as the instructions do not state. Thanks guys!

Got a valid Canadian driver's license? If so, there is no road test and no exam test. It is worth it to read the driver's book in Texas anyways though.

$24 for 6 or 7 years. Not bad.

You'll need to have your vehicles inspected, registered, and insured with Texas insurance first though. You get your driver's license last.

In North Dakota when I lived there and had to surrender my Canadian drivers licence I only had to do a vision test, the licence was only valid for the length of my EAD. I registered my vechile under AAA and didn't have my ND licence yet, at first she was going to not issue the insurance policy, but she then let me come back a day or two later with the ND licence. I hope I don't run into that problem when I move to NE, but hopefully by the time I go to get my car registered and insured (30 days max) i will have had my road test! I am so nervous for that day! whistling.gif

I will be in Canada for X-mas, was hoping that he could come up to Canada for Christmas, but he's stuck on the "on call" list so he can't leave the local area! I won't be able to make it because I promised my family I'd spend Christmas with them this year! But I will probably get sucked in working on my days off, which are 2 days before the 24th of Dec, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, because we are so short staffed as it is! OT for me!

Well guys I am still in SK, and yesterday we got our first blast of winter.(Actually the first snow fall was in October at Thanksgiving) Its -19C outside right now @ 10 am, snow and of course the streets are like a skating rink! I'm freezing! but I am sure glad I invested in winter tires! Time to break out the longjohns, toques and winter boots. When I lived in the US I would always get funny looks and people would say what the heck is a toque? I've heard words such as knit-cap or beanie. I am never going to live it down! LOL!

I called the NVC and I just want to verify with other Canadians,

On question 23, it asks to list ALL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ATTENDED! I would think this question meant all post secondary or at the most, high school- did any of you go back to your elementary days????????? This is what two NVC men told me to do!!!! I just find this question and Qu. 25- list all previous visits/residence in the US the reason why it has taken me a month long to complete this form.
I remember more and more but then I feel like there will be a discrepency with the dates!

What do I do??????????

Please, anyone help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Husband was the beneficiary - we listed his schools back to primary school - we did not however list every single primary school he attended.

I have read of people who just started at the Secondary school stage and others who started at elementary as well. Both had been accepted.
Is there a problem listing all your schools?

As for Canadians and the 'all visits' question. I have read many replies to this where the person just stated something like 'too many trips to mention over the past 15 years for shopping and visiting relatives' - something to that effect.

They are basically asking you to recall all your visits to the best of your ability. In the month it has taken you to try to list them all you could have submitted it to NVC and been approved - not criticizing you here - just saying, scribble it down and get it mailed laughing.gif

I would recommend that you write in all the ones you have remembered so far, then just write a note that you have listed all that you can remember, to the best of your ability.

I am not in that stage yet, but I am a little concerned. I was in the U.S. on an F-1 from 2002-2008..there were lots of visits back to Canada in that time...Do I just put F-1 visa Month/Year to Month/Year? 10 years! Thats 1999! For the first 4 summer semester breaks I moved back to Canada to work summer jobs! My head is spinning wacko.gif You should have seen my Supplements on the G-325A for employment and residences! wacko.gif

I have visited at least once a month since I returned and resided in Canada, and I think I have them all marked in my planner.... whistling.gif

CanadaDeclare Engagement Rings :S
QUOTE (neiks @ Jan 2 2009, 07:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It is rare that we ever collect a deposit on it. Usually, we are just impressed that it does get declared....And I still encourage you to declare it as there are alot of newbie officers out there that are eager to seize something. I know they collected a deposit for minnew which I did find surprising - maybe b/c the officer once again was new and the supervisor wanted to "show the right thing" to do. Usually, only if there is concern that the ring isn't going to be leaving Canada - then a deposit may be taken. It's just not the norm for us to do that at our port - but every port seems to do things a little different. Just add it in on your declaration form saying you received an egagement ring. They may ask you a few more questions. You need not request a E29B - that is just the form that they would use if they decided to take a deposit and only ask for a supervisor if the officer is insisting that you are going to have to pay duty and tax on it - you don't want to insult an knowledgable seasoned officer.
Sorry, I can't remember off hand what the % is if they do want to take a deposit.... like I said - it rarely happens at our port that we do take a deposit.

When I went through the land port and declared it, there was some "training" going on, so I am assuming thats the reason why I had to pay the deposit after reading your post.

I ended up declaring my engagement ring, when they asked why I was in the US I said I went to visit my fiance, then I stated I had jewelry to declare. I paid $300 deposit, but not sure how they figured that one out. It may have been a percentage of the total value, but mine had wedding band that they needed to factor out as my fiance is holding onto that in the US until we marry. Post #34 in the thread from a month ago had my review of the experience. Just bring the memo and explain to them what you need, it is likely that you may have a person who is inexperienced, so ask for a supervisor. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the information! I really do not know what I would do with out this forum! How do I go about applying for an extension of the E29B? And how long is the maximum extension?
Good question - I had to look that one up. This is what I found.

Extensions
51. E29B forms are issued for a specified period, in
accordance with time limitations outlined in the legislation
or regulations that entitled the goods to relief of customs
duties or taxes, including the GST/HST. Duties and taxes,
including the GST/HST, are owed on any goods that remain
in Canada after the Form E29B has expired.
52. If it is impossible or impracticable to export the goods
on or before the expiry date of the Form E29B, the importer
can apply for an extension of the period of importation. This
application should be made before the expiry date.
Depending on the terms of the relevant legislation, an
extension may be granted by either the nearest CBSA office
or the regional CBSA office. The memoranda listed in
paragraph 1 provide greater detail on the authorized periods
of temporary importation. The importer may be required to
present the goods for examination when requesting an
extension.

I would suggest that if you don't get your US visa before it expires then a month or two prior to it's expiration to call the Customs office from which it was issued. Explain that you still have an outstanding E29B and because your US paper work is still is in the process and ask if you can have an extension. If you happen to get an officer that is clueless or is non co-operative ask to speak to a superintendent or supervisor.

I am hoping by next year at this time I will be in the US but who knows, hopefully not waiting for an interview! But anyways, thank you for the information!

As a follow up to the original post: My experience declaring the engagement ring

A review of the experience:

If anyone else decides to declare their ring have the receipt, appraisal and copy of the memorandum listed in this post !! Maybe the border official had never done a temporary importation before, which okay granted but I was greeted with "Well your research is wrong" by the first contact in the booth. When they asked me to come inside I showed a girl the memorandum and she proceeded to tell me that it only applied to canadians who resided outside canada and because I was still in Canada it did not apply.

They had problems figuring out what to use as the value because the engagement ring was bought with a bridal set and my fiance has the wedding band in the US, I was told I would have to pay GST, PST and duty!! A guy who was obviously training a girl couldn't even find the memo that I printed off! Then when the supervisor came by and saw the Memo he was upset and said did you guys even read this after you printed it off? They were like yes, but she obtained it and the girl told him " I thought it only applied to non residents." UUggghh by then my frustration level was through the roof!! He read the whole thing out loud and then said she only has to pay a security deposit! (Back to more number crunching and 1 hour almost spent at the border).

So in the end I only ended up paying $300, but if the ring and myself does not leave canada in 12 months then i forfeit the deposit and have to pay somewhere around $350 dollars in federal tax! Oh yes and they were not going to let me pay my Visa or MC for the deposit, but it ended up I was allowed after authorization. I just keep thinking...its better than having it seized and paying 80% of the value back! But what a way to treat a bride to be! wacko.gif Wait US immigration process is worse!! LOL! wacko.gif laughing.gif

How can Canada customs prove HE didn't bring the ring into Canada at a previous date & propose then(and now you're crossing into Canada for the first time with the ring on your finger)? They wouldn't ask you for proof he paid duty right?
Just wondering.....

I'm so excited!!! biggrin.gif

I am not sure how that works exactly, they probably could ask if the ring was ever brought to Canada by my fiance. What I do know is that I had a friend who filed for K-3 and when he proposed he came up to Canada with the ring and I believe they asked for a bill of sale. I don't know what he said to canada customs(i'm coming up to canada to propose?), and not sure if they got released from customs without paying duty with the temporary importation.

Perhaps you could send the ring using FedEx? I've always found them to be expedient and reliable. I'd recommend insuring it, just to be safe.

If you mail the ring, then customs won't make you declare it at the border or airport and they probably wouldn't question you (thereby giving you a seat in secondary) or possibly confiscate it. The fact is you could merely write down that it's a ring (forgetting the engagement part) since it is a ring. Without being questioned and forced to answer, any customs officer who views it written on the package would probably not bother anymore with it.

Thank you for the advice. There have been times where my entire car and contents have been searched for an hour, plus told to empty my pockets and purse, I am not going to chance it I think I will end up declaring it for temporary importation, I am just worried if we cannot find the receipt headbonk.gif wacko.gif I don't particularly want to pay GST on the value, because what he paid for the set are two different numbers, since the diamond was a gift from his mother.

Anyways, I asked my fiance last night if he has the receipt for the ring and he said he lost it! headbonk.gif I'm sure its around the house somewhere! We have the appraisal certificates! If I don't have the receipt I will have to pay GST at the border? But no duty? I wonder if a debit/credit card statement with the purchase listed on there would suffice if we can't find the receipt by Sunday? Sometimes they don't even ask about gifts...more like a wave through, but probably not this weekend because lots of Canadians are in town shopping for day after thanksgiving sales!

The document that was posted from CBSA had in there that the ring would be duty free and temporarily imported for up to 12 months..hopefully we will be approved by then! (haven't filed yet) I just don't want to run into trouble, i am all about CYA!

- 400$ taxpayers.

Best practice, L2 Drive safe. Snow tires isn't going to suddenly make people drive safe, and it doesn't mean snow suddenly becomes irrelevant.

Errrr...... you haven't spent a fall/winter/spring in Quebec, have you? laughing.gif

Ditto to that in SK...you don't see the black asphalt in the winter....all you see is road with lots of packed down snow and maybe some ice covering the tire tracks! Our graters here suck! We are lucky if the residentials streets even get plowed once a season! I had all season tires last winter boy do I notice a difference! and I was driving at safe slow speeds, to me its a matter of possibily saving my life!

I'm still pondering the law and its enforcability...I mean if the insurance company finds out you weren't using snow tires and you get into an accident they won't cover you? Police using traffic stops or stopchecks to inspect your tires? It just seems silly to me, I definitely agree with people using snow tires, but to make it a LAW? A law to me would be easily (right or wrong/black and white) enforceable...this one I dunno.

I live in the prairies and I don't understand alot of the quebec vs. rest of canada anomosity....maybe I am just too young, or I pay more attention to US politics! LOL! And what is up with Quebec making snow tires mandatory?!?! I see the need for snow tires in Canada, but what I don't understand is how they are supposed to enforce that law! Shouldn't they be out catching drug dealers and murderers instead! Seriously though I tried to get snow tires and I'm lucky I did early because the rest of Canada is either short or out of snow tires! I do remember when Quebec tried to separate though, what a hoot that was!! No but seriously, the us vs. them needs to stop!

The nice thing about his job right now in the AF is that if he does deploy I do not have to worry about hime going into combat areas...they don't see any action either...the two times he has deployed its to an island in the middle of the ocean. Ha! more like a vacation. Which I guess the only downfall to that is me sitting at home in the US in the middle of winter or fall( doesn't matter which season LOL)being jealous that on his off time he is scuba diving or playing beach volleyball!! Grrrrr!!! My fiance was actually thinking of getting out in March after his 6 years, he was so fed up...but the current economic situation had alot to do with his decision to stay in, got orders to NE and well that and they were offering reinlistment bonuses, which is going to help to be a great start to our married life. Who know after another 6 years though? We will see!

The Island wasn't Diego Garcia by chance?? smile.gif That's where hubby was stationed for a year. He said it wasn't the end of the earth, but you could see it from there smile.gif

Yep it was, he was deployed there for 4 months. He came back with a nice DARK tan! LOL!

Hilarious! Hubby brought some amazing pics back.. mostly they look like scenes from LOST. smile.gif

The pictures were beautiful! He got a local artist on the island to make me a wooden flower momento...it has painted on there operation ******* a picture of the island, the american and british flag and for andrea love brad. I balled when I got in the mail!!

When I told him about the thread he said that anyone who is interested in the forces right now should just join the Navy.. they don't see action - they are always at sea smile.gif tee hee.. he loved his time in the military, but when it was time to get out, he HAD to get out.. he was not a military career guy.

I know this is getting off-topic but I would like to add something to the conversation. My fiance's dad used to be an army recruiter, is also a vietnam veteran and now his younger son is planning to join the Air Force. He already has a career field in mind. The recruiter that they had been going to has not been very cooperative or helpful in that they are trying to get his son to enlist in the AF and THEN pick a career field within the AF that might interest him to give him time to think about it. DO NOT DO THIS!! They will place you in a job you will hate!! Have the job in mind that you want to do and force the recruiter to give you more information on the career field. The recruiter (and they have been trying to find another in the area) has not been cooperative in that, and I am not sure telling the truth about other aspects, which leads recruits to not know the reality of what they are getting in to.

Just a thought....you are 18 years old and allowed to enter the military...it has been researched that 18 year olds do not have full decision making capacity, are they thinking more about what they can do with an enlistment bonus?

My fiance is in the AF and he's worked with the new recruits that come who are 18, straight out of high school and myself and him have seen them not do well at all, professionally or personally and in some cases actually being discharged from the AF. Too much too soon? Yes in my opinion, but maybe there are some well-adjusted mature for their age 18 year olds out there who do join.

So the mlitary just pushed his home-coming a bit later now again... BOO!! crying.gif
Not to mention, Im still super nervous about crossing the border since the last time at POE the girl was suspicious to my visit (didnt have my return ticket on me, and the fact i visited 3 weeks prior for a week). I get nervous when I cross over since I have no job (stay at home mom, live off my child support and child tax benefit, and live in the house my ex husband owns and he pays the mortgage as my 'child support', while he lives with a friend).
So as the time gets nearer, I get the jitters about being rejected to visit my boyfriend for 2 weeks at his home-coming when he lands from oversea's. And the fact Ill be flying into a city in the states and staying there for a few days, then driving for vacation with him to another state and just flying out of the other state, not sure if thats gonna cause suspicion too.
Im a natural worry-wart, no wonder why Im 27 and have a few grays wacko.gif

Yeah the military can really sour things! Hurry up and wait!! When he went on his first deployment the date he was supposed to leave kept on getting pushed back, he'd get a call in the morning the day of...nope not today...by the end of it it was like will you leave already so I can be depressed!! LOL!! I am nervous too about visiting, each time I have its always the 20 questions, especially after we got engaged when I said I was going to visit my fiance, but I have an answer for all of them and they don't start off with "ugggh". They just want to hear that you have a date to come back, and one of them asked about getting married, I said "not this visit, when we get approved for Fiance visa." But this time it will be different as tomorrow I am going to visit him for just over a week and we just filed the k-1 petition! unsure.gif I've got all my stuff for ties ready to go, I live at home so no rent and utilities but I am still a bit nervous! always am when I cross by myself!!

After this visit we are unsure of when the next time it will be before we see each other! I need to build up some holiday time, he doesn't want to use too much leave time as he wants some built up for moving me down and the wedding, hopefully it won't be longer than 3 months....***Just keeps thinking this is a deployment...to keep me sane***

Awwww hugs.... hang in there.... long distance relationships are soooo hard and I feel as if only those that have gone thru it understand.... I could never talk to my friends about how much I missed my sweetie because they would just be like "why don't you find someone local?" It really hurt me so I just talked to my family, they understood. You don't choose who to fall in love with, and it just happens... But your heart physically aches when you're apart, it's sooo hard!! Just keep thinking about the time you'll finally be together, that's what got me thru the hard times luv.gif

I definately relate as well. My sweety and I met on World of Warcraft. We play every day and talk on webcam but I still miss him like crazy. I have the reverse of you though Jill. My friends are happy and excited for me, as is my sister but my parents arent really super happy with the idea of me being so far away and going to live with someone they say I dont really know because we haven't lived together. The irony? My mom and dad got engaged after 6 months of dating because my dad was being posted back to canada (mom is german) so I think its fairly hypocritical of them to be acting they way they are about the situation. Ah well. Not much they can do about it, I'm going to do this thing with or without them being completely happy (though my dad is starting to come around...says hes just concerned). Its so hard to be this far away from Wes though. We only get to see each other once every 4 months or so because the flights are expensive (though we got his tickets for the upcoming visit for only $413 roundtrip!!) The physical ache from being apart isn't something you can just make up...crying in the middle of the night because you wake up out of a beautiful dream only to realize he's not really there to hold... ugh... im starting to make myself cry again.

Thats why I love these forums though. Every time I see one of you guys get your acceptance it makes me happy because one day that will be me, and my prince and I will be together forever. I wish you all the best as well with your happily ever afters biggrin.gif

These forums really help the time go by faster and I really appreciate being able to relate and share stories with each other. I keep thinking too one day it will be me jumping for joy that we got approved! I understand the physical ache..its hard to describe, and I know its only going to get worse before it gets better, but I know we will make it through!!
