I'm from Saskatchewan!

I just noticed that the OP's local office is St. Paul, MN. You had said that you wouldn't like to go somewhere that is too "crowded." Well Saskatchewan and Manitoba are great options. Both provinces have great provincial parks to camp, and cities like Winnipeg, Regina or Saskatoon are not too big and easy to find your way around.

I agree with what everyone else has said, please look into some counselling. It sounds like both of you are going through some hard times, you with the attempted assault, and him the homesickness and depressed and looking for the other to emotionally support each other, but have not been able to given the circumstances. I wish you both the best. rose.gif

Yes return to Canada and if you do, I suggest before June 1st! As you said you lost your passport in Miami. You will need a passport to cross any land borders! So that date is coming up very quickly!

Oh. I'm confused. I thought the passport thing was just to get into the US. I didn't know you needed a passport to now get into Canada as of June 1st from the US.

Humm I thought it was, now I am confused too! Because say if you visit Canada from the U.S. without a passport, how can you get back into the U.S. if the requirement is to have a passport for entry into the U.S.?

Sorry this is OT from the OP's post!

Shoot, wish I could still edit. Sorry for the misinformation, its a U.S. law, Canada has not implemented it. If a U.S. citizen is returning to the U.S. after visiting Canada a passport will still be needed from what I read, even though Canada does not require a passport for him/her to enter. Here is the website about WHTI.

CanadaWarning: Mega complicated question
QUOTE (Maverice @ May 14 2009, 10:54 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi! Alright so, almost 2 yrs ago (2yrs i Sept. '09) I was misguided and moved here from Toronto to be with a guy I was seeing. I chose to do this without bothering with visas because at the time I didn't really think I'd want to get married and I had enough money between he & I to float me for a while. Also, it was my intention at the time to come back to Canada every once in a while to comply with the 6 mos. thing.

I came over the Buffalo border using my driver's license and my friend drove me using his car. I haven't been back since - believe me, had I been able to I would have but it's been a torturous time. A series of unfortunate events, as it were. Not the best idea, I know, but frankly I don't think they can tell how long I've been here unless they checked with Canada to see when I re-entered...

Anyway, forget the boyfriend, I'm still living here (states) and have a question. A friend wants to hire me as a consultant at his company. He says I just have to pay taxes at the end of the year, at which point I'd be issued a ITIN. So: do I have to go back to Canada to open a bank account and register myself as an independent contractor or is there a way of doing it all remotely from here? Also, is it possible for a Canadian to open a bank account in the US without a SSN?

Oh yes - I lost my passport in Miami and have yet to replace it, I never renewed my expired Canadian passport as I had the license and currently the only ID I have is my British passport (I have dual brit/can citizenship and I was born in London, UK).

Anybody have any ideas? unsure.gif

It sounds like to me that you have overstayed in the U.S.A because you did not go back to Canada after your 6 months of visiting was up. If you go back to Canada and attempt to reenter the U.S. you will most likely be denied entry, and given a ban from entering the U.S. It depends on the length of time you have overstayed, someone else more knowledgeable about bans and waivers can help you out on this. Yes they do have records of your arrival and departures. After June 1, 2009 you will not be able to go back to Canada due to new passport rules for land borders,as you said you do not have a Canadian or British passport. You will need to renew your passport if you attempt to go back to Canada or decide to apply for immigration benefits.

Are you still with your boyfriend? Do you have any intentions of getting married to him now? You stated that you did not have any intentions to marry him when you entered 2 years ago and that is ok if you decide to get married to him now and apply for AOS within the U.S. Please someone correct me if I am wrong, but the overstay will be forgiven when it comes time for the greencard to be approved, you will also have to appear for an interview at your nearest USCIS field office. That is the only way given your situation that you may stay in the U.S.A legally and also be able to work legally in the U.S.A.

...and might I add that I find all this slightly annoying as my dad was born literally 5 minutes away from the border. I just want to be able to stay in New York, really.

I understand your frustration, but Canada and the U.S.A are two different countries and there are procedures to go through in order to legally stay in the U.S.A.

Me too, just went to him yesterday and asked him for a letter, he didn't say a word about charging me. He said the letter would be ready by next week! When I went to get the immunization records they didn't charge me because I had just been in for the Tdap. But yeah $350 in Vancouver for a medical really SUCKS.

CanadaMarrying and being married
To add to my earlier post, sorry didn't have the time! In our relationship situation, we met while I was studying in the U.S, we got to go out on dates every weekend and see each other almost daily like "normal" couples do. We spent almost 4 years together living in the same city and 1 year of actually living together before I had to move back to Canada. We were not ready at the time to get married, we had talked about going to the courthouse and filing AOS from F-1, but to us having our families and close friends there was much more important than hurrying up to get married so we wouldn't be apart.

We also decided we are only getting married once, it wouldn't feel right for us if we do a religious ceremony later on after the legal one. We knew we wanted to get married just not quite yet, not in a place emotionally or financially at the time, too much other ####### going on! I also knew when we were planning on filing for the K-1 process, as far as the engagement he told me he would propose within the 6 months before filing, so there still was some "suprise" aspect to it. (Sorry I am talking about another thread here) I just knew it was going to be during one of the monthly visits while we were dating LD. We knew the long distance would be hard especially after being together almost daily, and it is! I just keep telling myself it will be so worth it in the end!

I wanted to pick two answers for Question number 2. Our wedding this fall will be the legal and religious ceremony, with the wedding rings, wedding dress and all. We are having a church ceremony plus dinner and dancing reception. Yet our wedding will be quite small and simple with our closest family and friends attending. I think we will be lucky if 60 attended due to the distance and travelling involved, yet our invite list will be over 80.

Thanks Sapphire! I never thought about that and technically, it will be my best friend filling out the form.

I just figured I couldn't collect EI if I was living in the States as well. Is that possible and I was just misinformed?

Yes! Many of us collect EI when moving to the US, it doesn't matter. Now, lately alot of people on K-1s have been getting rejected, so it's not a guarantee you'll be approved. But it's worth the try!

Two things jump out at me while reading this thread. One is yours JillA that says "now, lately, alot of people on K-1's have been getting rejected..." What can you tell me about that? It may be because they're not following the rules, but I'd sure like to know why.

The second comment was the OP saying because she was quitting that she wouldn't be able to get EI, and minnew saying that she didn't think she could collect EI until her EAD.

domegirl, yes, you can quit, and it can say you quit on the ROE...and don't wait for the ROE before you apply either. You've quit to relocate to the US to marry your husband, or live with your husband, so you can collect EI.

minnew, I did hear that people are not eligible for EI between their arrival date in the US and their EAD now as well, however two things to keep in mind. One is that you have to apply for your benefits before 30 days are over from your leaving your past job. You should apply for your EAD as soon as you get married, it shouldn't take that long to come in, much faster than they've been in the last few years anyway, and you'll get your monies backdated (minus 2 weeks), from your EAD approval date.

Thanks Carla! That's the plan! I want as little gap as possible between my I-94 expiring and me receiving my EAD card, which means we send out AOS ASAP after the wedding. I will be working pretty much up until the day I move, so no problems there! Its just hard not knowing if my EI will be rejected during the date of arrival to when the I-94 expires, or if I will have to wait until my EAD comes. I wonder why they have been rejecting some people lately?

Canadawere any of you ever majorly stressing out over finances before leaving and when in the states
I am starting to get a bit worried about my expenses while I am unemployed, also hearing that they have been denying EI claims until you get your EAD. I will be getting a pension when I terminate my current job so I am thinking i will leave that money here in Canada to pay for my student loans, car payments until I find work with my EAD. I told my employer that between now and the end of September feel free to call me in for OT shifts. I live at home, so pay no rent! Thank you Mom & Dad!! I already have a full time rotation, but the extra shifts will help me pay off my last debts and save up $$ for AOS and wedding expenses. I think that opened up a can of worms because now I am working on my 2 weekends off this month, and this Wednesday! I am supposed to be off until Friday! Sometimes working all the OT kind of stinks because your paycheque does not reflect what you work...it just jumps you into a higher tax bracket! mad.gif I hope I get some of that money back in 2010! mad.gif

CanadaI-134 notarize??? Conflicting instructions
I can't speak on behalf of Montreal, but to be safe have one copy notarized and one copy not. Even though the I-134 new form does not need to be notarized many consulates still asked for the form to be notarized. Maybe its misinformation by the interviewing officers, depends who you interview with, who knows. The edition date on the new form was 10/30/2008. There was a review from a VJ member dated March 7, 2009 who appeared in Vancouver for the interview and had to appear for a 2nd interview because they did not have the I-134 notarized as well as the letters of intent. My motto, better to be safe than sorry.

CanadaThe internet and you
I try to be true to myself where ever I may be, whether it be in-person, on the telephone or online. I am the kind of person that is honest and down to earth. I would not classify myself as someone who knows the immigration process entirely, as no one does. I joined VJ in March of 08 I believe, I did alot of browsing before I did any posting. I do not feel comfortable giving someone advice on VJ unless I know for sure the answer or I can relate to my own experiences. Because I can tell you I know that in my own experience from my very first topic posts the people that replied were very welcoming and very informative. That's what VJ is about a community, sharing other people's family immigration experience or for some people just to browse and update their timeline.

I was also brought up that if you don't have anything nice to say, do not say it all. I think alot of people on VJ use the internet/a computer screen to say things that they probably would not tell you in person. This does not mean that I would not share my opinion on a subject in person or online, but I would not degrade them and say vulgar things to them if I did not agree with them, or make a point of this is my opinion and I think its right, get defensive that someone does not agree, and argue with you on the fact that you think its right...or wrong, or try to change theirs.

I met my fiance online, he can tell you that I am the same person that he met in person. He thought I was going to be taller...and I thought he was going to be taller, laughing.gif but oh well when you have only pictures to go on for 4 months of chatting as friends what can you do? I have met some very nice people online and through VJ, not in person but we talk on a regular basis through other forms of messenger. Could I see myself being friends and meeting some people on VJ on a regular basis? Yes. As long as they aren't some stalker... laughing.gif

Someone in another thread mentioned about people airing their personal problems on an online forum and yes I do agree sometimes those people do not have anyone else to talk to about the situation, which makes me sad too. I think its horrible to make fun of them, as that would hopefully not be how you would treat them in real life. The fiances or spouses of the USC's you must remember have left their home country to come to the USA, usually with no connections, no family and friends living the US, of course they can make friends in "real life" by working and socializing with coworkers, neighbours, whoever. There only "friends" may be the USC or the USC friends. I do have friends, family and my fiance to talk to besides VJ. I do have friends in the US because I went to school there. The thing about VJ is that sometimes people feel ashamed or guilty to talk with their family or friends about certain issues, or their family and friends do not understand the in's and out's of the immigration process. I am sure all of us have been through that. As much as I tried to explain it to my friends, they still call what I am going through "your citizenship" process. I reply no, its greencard, after I marry, I may apply later fo citizenship, I do not automatically become a citizen by marrying a USC. wacko.gif

VJ is definitely a special group of people going through a lengthy, frustrating, emotional time and immigration process, I think some people forget that, we all should rely on each other for support which is what this forum is based on and try to be civil with each other during it, whether you are brand new and only stick around for a while or you are a seasoned VJ member.

CanadaBirthday Gift
QUOTE (harleytexas @ May 18 2009, 08:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
You might be wondering what the title "Birthday Gift" means.

The title is in reference to the best birthday gift that I've received so far...my life. No, I'm not born again, it means that I almost died a few days ago. You read that right, I almost died and could have killed a friend of mine.

I was driving to work with my friend and co-worker the usual way we go and as I came up behind a car ahead of us, they decided to do a u-turn on the road in front of us. It was a two lane road and he was across our lane, the shoulder and part of the oncoming lane. I had to choose what to do and put on the brakes and try to get around him instead of hitting him head on.

The car spun around a few time, luckily no cars were coming in the other direction, and finally flipped the car onto it's side. We both had our seat belts on didn't received any real injuries. We both have whiplash and aches and pains all over. The car that caused this stopped to see if we were ok and then took off before we could get out and get the licence plate number. Nice huh?

I do have a rental for now and we shall see if the car can be repaired or written off which means that once I pay off the car, I won't have any money for another one. That will be fun.

The good part is that my friend and I are relatively good and with eight days until my birthday, I'm glad to be alive.

Wow! That's scary stuff! ohmy.gif Good to hear that you and your friend are okay! I would definitely be counting my blessings! I was in a similar situation with a friend of mine in college driving home after the semester was done, it was May and there was a bad snowstorm that hit a few days earlier, we got caught on some ice and snow and ended up spinning a few times into the oncoming lane! Luckily there was no one in that lane, we ended up facing the ditch, then my friend turned to face oncoming traffic, and luckily the traffic that was behind us didn't slam into us! I remember as the passenger looking to my right and seeing a semi truck coming towards me, I thought this is it! I am toast! Thank goodness he was able to pass us in the other lane! Anyways, take care of yourself! Hope you feel better soon!

....so i'm leaving in 10 days....

I was driving around today and started thinking....this is it, in 10 days I am leaving the Country that made me! crying.gif the place that I proudly called home for almost 35 years....

Funny enough, I never felt that way about Canada until now.

I mean, sure we get made fun of by many overly patriotic Americans, as though we are the ugly duckling sibling that no one plays with....
And so what, if we are wishy washy and don't start our own fights, but when we are beckoned we run lol....and our National animal may not have been our best choice, and may share the name of something else that comes to mind....but gosh golly BEAVERS ARE CUTE!.... and so what that most of us have to drive 46 hours to see coastal land, or that we have more wood than a wood chuck could chuck in a lifetime....WE MADE MAPLE SYRUP!...and the real kind too! our trees ooze with sweetness....

....and yes, our French may speak as though chewing on potatoes at the same time....but who's to say they are not the proper one's and the tongue spoken in France lacks 'potato'....and yes, Quebec may not have invented the French Fry.... but they sure as heck found some great artery clogging substances to drown those buggers in, and POUTINE WAS BORN!!!!

(can you hear our anthem now?)

And who cares if they think we all live in igloo's, and that our mail is delivered by dog sled...and that we harpoon our dinner daily, and that Yukon is not only the truck we drive, BUT THE PLACE WE LIVE!, we are PROUD TO BE CANADIAN!....regardless of the fact that our seasons are numbered 5 days spring, 6 days summer, 10 days fall and 344 days winter...do we complain?, NO! Instead, we pretend to be ok with it and create a sport called luge...which was probably discovered by some drunk fool exiting a Pub...slipped on his @** and slid home in 10.2 secs flat.....sorry got off track....oh, yes....

I love being Canadian! or at least I did....do I always say i'm Canadian? even 10 years from now? or is that bound to get us beat up by the other kids in the playground laughing.gif

Anyways, just thought i'd make a funny, of something that's actually got me a little teary eyed.... I was always a traveller and I have seen much of the world....from a young child, I knew that one day 'i'd blow this pop stand' (I honestly thought it would be for Europe quite honestly...) but now that the day has come... I feel a little sad crying.gif

I feel a little less Canadian? or a trader? so weird.... Well, I do promise to keep up the 'Eh' cause my fiance thinks it's hilarious and it drives him bonkers.... It's not as if I won't be back, i'll actually visit frequently, every month (for visitation)...but that's the thing right there.... 'visit' crying.gif

ok, i'm done...

ps. oh, one more thing.... 'Oh Canada...our home and native land....' rose.gif heart.gif rose.gif
cool.gif

The first part of your post while I was reading it I started thinking of the Molson Canadian commercials a few years back where the guy is standing up on a pedestal..(yes Canada is this....but......I AM CANADIAN!! ) I kept on humming that music to it... laughing.gif

I haven't thought about it too much lately until now, but now that I will be leaving Canada not just to study I am sure it will hit me like a ton of bricks! I will sure miss Canada and the people! I think I will feel kind of like a traitor, but I know I will always call myself Canadian first and foremost.

CanadaHouse Sitters
Our neighbours have asked us to house sit their dog, we have known them for the past 18 years. Basically when we do that we go over to their house maybe once or twice a day and see if the dog needs to go to the bathroom and make sure the dog gets her supper. My parents will also take her for a walk once a day or once every other day, as she's not as active as she used to be. Our neighbour leaves instructions on what time to be fed and usually what time to come over so that the dog can relieve herself outside. Our neighbours will also do the same for us when we are away, except we don't have pets, they will just check the mail so the mailbox is not overflowing. I wouldn't leave a vechile with them, just a key and let them come and go. If you don't know anyone well enough maybe you could hire someone but then there is the issue of privacy of your items inside your home and would they invite people over.
If you do hire someone definitely have a contract, as it will come in handy for the situation with my aunt and uncle below:

I know this doesn't have to do with pets, but still on the same topic, sorta:
My aunt and uncle have a trailer in AZ and will be spending 6 months a year there. They just did that this past year. They worked out with some people that they KNEW for them to rent the house from them for 6 months while they were away to cover bills and expenses. Well even though it was someone they knew and trusted, not everyone will treat your home the way you treat it, different mindset I guess, but everyone is different. They had rental agreements and now the people owe my aunt and uncle around $3000 for repairs and damages, plus there was other people living there that were not on the initial contract. This year if they again go to AZ in October they will just ask their neighbours whom they have known for 20+ years to watch the house for them, even though they might be into a loss a bit due to expenses in AZ.

I am so glad to hear that you and your husband and working it out. That is awesome! I will not be living in Texas unfortunately. Have you or your husband ever heard of the website Connect2Canada? They send out weekly emails with news pertaining to Canadians living in the United States. They also have links to various Canadian ExPats groups in different cities and states around the country. There is a Houston meet-up group. http://www.meetup.co...ianClubHouston/ http://www.connect2c...m/home-accueil/. Anyways, my cousin is currently living in Houston and he absolutely loves the city! He is currently on a TN visa working with one of the major oil companies that has branches in Canada as well. It sounds like they want to sponsor him for an permanent position soon. Anyways, there are lots of Canadians living in the Houston area!

BradnKim I hope you hear something soon!

It sounds like I had the same lady, she was older and Asian. I hope she does not give me any more trouble tomorrow when I drop off my medical results. whistling.gif

CanadaUS bank account
QUOTE (nkkst2 @ May 30 2009, 09:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hello I am a Canadian citizen waiting to be approved for a K1 visa. I attended school in the US for 4 yrs and worked for a year after I graduated on OPT. While I was there I opened a bank account. I never closed the bank account when I moved back to Canada and I still use it to make purchases and whatnot when I visited my boyfriend in the US. Is this okay/legal???

Yes I am in the same situation as you! I bank through WellsFargo in the U.S. and they allowed me to change the address to my Canadian address on the chequing and credit account I have with them. I use my WellsFargo card occasionally for purchases here in Canada as I still keep some money in the chequing account in the U.S. They do charge you foreign currency conversion fees though which are very minimal, depending on the amount that you purchase. I feel very fortunate that you as well as I have a bank account in the U.S. and some minimal credit history that started 4 years ago with my bank credit card and a couple of department store cards. I guess you have to start somewhere right...my first capital one card had a limit of $300...after a month or two it got bumped up to $500...slowly but surely....Same thing with WF...it sure takes a while!

So far my worst experience was driving from my fiance's parents home to a friend of my fiance's place on I-85 north of Atlanta. It was an "afternoon" shower, laughing.gif Well to me it was like a HEAVY downpour, the wiper blades were on full blast and I still could not see ANYTHING!! There was traffic all around me and I slowed down to as slow as I could go on an Interstate. My fiance kept on saying just follow the white line! I am freaking out and saying I can't even see it! I kept on saying I am going to pull over! He said NO WAY!! You will most likely cause an accident or someone else won't be able to see you and plow right into you! I had people passing me like it was nothing!! Most of the people behind me did slow down and follow thank goodness, but I don't know how the people that were passing me made it!

All I have to say is Rain-X. Seriously. It's a lifesaver. I worry about people who DON'T use Rain-X, it's that good.

Rain-X...humm good to know! Thanks Krikit! I will definitely have to get some next time my future hubby and I drive down South to visit his family!

CanadaDriving in America
Well I don't have any experience driving in major cities like Toronto, I am from SK....we don't have "interstates" or freeways. The drivers can be pretty idiotic here too. When I have visited my fiance I have had some experience driving on interstates on the way to Atlanta and a bit of driving through Atlanta and Omaha.
I still freak out a bit as I am not used to it, everyone drives very aggressively and when you signal to move to another lane its not please let me in, its I am coming over so you better slow down, because usually they will speed up!

K visas pay their fee at the consulate:

All non-immigrant visa applicants must pay a non-refundable 131 U.S. dollar application fee. All applicants (except for K visas) MUST pay the fee at any branch of the Scotia Bank before coming to the Consulate. Visa application fees cannot be paid at the U.S. Consulate General (except by fiancé and immigrant visa applicants).

I think I had read this somewhere too (do you have a link childress?)

So I guess this means they can pay beforehand at the bank or they can pay at the consulate?

I think the Vancouver Consulate requires the Scotiabank receipt way and Montreal Consulate is cash only, $131. Don't quote me on the Vancouver info... but Montreal is 100% correct at $131 US cash only.

Yep you are right! There are 3 Pre-Printed deposit slips on the Vancouver Consulate website, once they are stamped at Scotiabank the bank keeps 1 of those slips and the Vancouver Consulate gets the other two on the day of the interview.

Favorite game I remember playing as a kid was dodge traffic or Eat the worm...

blink.gif

Am I the only one who played jumpsies?! ohmy.gif

I played jumpsies too! I have never heard it called jumpsies before! I was horrible at double dutch, but I could do skip rope and hopskotch. My best friend and I used to play MASH with chalk on her driveway...if only I could remember how to play it! I had a tetherball in my backyard for a long time also! I hated Dodgeball! I played with my hulahoop alot! I can't remember what the darn thing was called but it attached to your ankle and you had to swing it around in a circle and at the other end it counted how many times you hopped around to get thing to go in a circle!

I have it rolled up in a tube somewhere....

I know.... you're saving it for the big baseball game, right? The rolled up X-Ray in the tube will be your bat??? laughing.gif

I remember the receptionist at the clinic in Vancouver told me to keep the vaccination record that the Dr. signed off on and bring that and the chest X-ray when you cross the border. I didn't have much time to ask her why she said that as I had to get to the Consulate, but my thought was...a border guard really going to ask to see a chest X-ray? I don't think so.... Oh well...for now its in my closet along with my envelope that says DO NOT OPEN. I really need to put it in the freezer! I am afraid it might get lost though in there! laughing.gif
