CanadaImporting my Honda

I've also heard that you need to send the border your car importing paperwork 72 hours before you import your vehicle... anybody know if this true??

Yes I have heard of that, I had to deal with that when I temp imported my car for 1 year. I do not know if it depends on the border crossing though. I went through North Portal, ND and I know that they require that. Check with the POE you intend to go through, I think when I called Portal there was an automated message about importing vechiles, the fax #, and the time required to get them the documents by fax.

CanadaForm questions
QUOTE (GTB - Michael @ Jun 20 2009, 07:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I also have two questions about the DS-156 form:

Question 29: "Have you ever been in the US (When, How Long?)." I assume this is similar to question 35 above, but they only give a small space to write the answer. Given the space, I'm assuming "Numerous visits / varied lengths" works just fine here.

Question 32: "Do you intend to work in the US (if yes, give the name and address of the us employer)." Well, I do *intend* to work in the US once my EAD is approved, but who knows where and for whom? Is checking "yes" and writing in "upon EAD approval" the right answer here?

Thanks so much for any help you can offer. I swear, sometimes even the simplest question on these forms can seem like a big hurdle. I'm just paranoid about doing something wrong! blink.gif lol

Question 29: Same answer for Question 35 on the DS-230, list the most recent visits or the ones that you can remember. I listed all the way back to 2002, because I was student for a number of years, of course not each individual weekend trip to and from for 6 years, but you get the idea. F-1 02-08...then my visits as a visitor.

Question 32: I think i put something like with EAD approval, or DHS approval, so yes what you have is fine!

CanadaWhat to feel when your first love tells you he/she is going to be married...
Well it wasn't exactly a first love, but I guess more a REAL love, I dated a guy in college for over about a year or so, well turned out he broke my heart instead. He is married now and just had a baby girl, don't get me wrong I am happy for them. It just still feels weird even though I am engaged, have been with my fiance for over 4 years and I will be getting married in October to the ONE. I ran into him a few times separately, and when my fiance was present with me, it was cordial and civil, but still weird. We do not talk as friends. We are two totally different people, it would not have been the lifestyle I wanted to live at all!! Think of city girl meets small town/country/biker/everyone knows everybody elses business/everyone drives a pickup truck. Not for me!!!

CanadaInterview Letter Received

Interview sceduled July 28th in Vancouver!! Anybody else??

Some of the wonderful people I met at my medical last month mentioned that I needed to bring an Express Post envelope to the interview so that they could mail me my approved (hopefully) visa, although my interview letter doesnt request this?? I'm assuming I will just bring one anyways to be on the safe side, but did anybody else's letter exclude this? How would I know to bring one if there was no VJ?!

Hi Jesse! Glad to hear about your interview date! If there are no furthur issues, Vancouver's K visa's are available for pick up the next business day after your interview at 2 pm. So if your travel arrangements allow for you to be in Vancouver an extra day to pick up the visa, then you do not need the X-presspost mailer. I stuck around Vancouver and arranged for an evening flight back home, but people have done the Xpresspost mailer too. Its got to be the largest size with tracking if you do it. I can't remember the size off hand. Anyways, hope all is well!!

CanadaLose weight Canada
I have always been a slender girl, my waist no matter if I gain a few pounds always seems to stay around the same. All of my extra weight goes to my hips thighs and butt! I am a bit concerned because I have not tried on my wedding dress since I bought it and wondering if it still fits!! eeek!! It needed to be taken in in the hips and thighs, and the bust needed to be taken in a little bit as well, so I think have some cushion! Anyways, I was thinking of starting some cardio but also pilates or something to tone my thighs and butt. I usually look like a floundering fish on a treadmill, so I have no clue where to start! I hate having to GO to a gym! But then I get bored with fitness videos! wacko.gif I just lack motivation. I need Tommy from Bulging Brides! tongue.gif Too bad I don't live in Vancouver sad.gif

CanadaHome Decorating
Bed Bath and Beyond might have decor items and such, I would assume not any furniture though. I hear they have nice stuff! We have shopped at both Wal-Mart and Target for things but Target is definitely better! My fiance went to Bed Bath & Beyond last week to get some throw pillows for the couch...I must say he did a good job picking them out! (All I saw was the pics) He said he felt really girly (gay) going in there and actually purchasing the pillows...I had a good laugh at him.. We watch too much HGTV together...and when we are apart! laughing.gif
Now if only I could get him to go into a lingerie store with me....it still hasn't happened! laughing.gif

We've had our share of songs over the years but the latest is "Then" by Brad Paisley. It describes us so well! We decided to make it our first dance wedding song.

I have thought about that one too for the first dance! It makes me misty eyed when I hear it! My SO problem is he does not like country!! I do! There are so many beautiful love songs! heart.gif

CanadaNeed help deciding
The wait times for an interview in Vancouver are shorter than MTL. At the most 6-8 weeks and at the shortest possibly 4-6 weeks. I sent back my pkt 3 by fax mid-april and was scheduled for an interview at the end of May. The other difference between VAN and MTL is that with VAN you can fax back pkt 3 and be scheduled an interview almost immediately. You can call DOS to confirm a few days later. They also have a spot on the pkt 3 that has "Preferred Interview Dates" I have never heard of anyone not receiving a date that they requested. Depends on the date of the interview as well. I listed first available Tuesday or Thursday after May 15th or something like that....I would have to check

CanadaActually had a Mean, Arrogant Canadian Border Guard
There was no reason for your wife to be treated like that, at all!
I have had my share of arrogant guards on both sides of the border, but generally the problems I have had are with the women guards. I don't know why and I am not here to bash but they have always been less friendly and more towards interrogation. Also sometimes uninformed, like the whole rigamarole I had to go through with temp importing my engagement ring into Canada. I can understand if some are in-training, but not the ones who have an ego to go with it. I understand the guards have a duty to protect the country from people who do not have the privilege of entering, but when you are a Canadian citizen and have no reason to be denied entry I think its a bit ridiculous to be scrutinized so harshly.

No you do not have to have it finished, but it is best to try to arrange for it before mailing the Packet 3. Unfortunately I could not book my medical until my interview date was known because the nearest doctor is in Vancouver and i will be doing it the same time as my interview in Vancouver.

I have to tell you... she WAS the governor of Arizona. With the presidential election of 2008, Arizonans figured they couldn't lose! They'd either have an Arizonan in the White House OR Napolitano would be gone. They, unfortunately, were hoping more for the latter, and that's what they got! But, now the problem is, she's in charge of DHS. Oyyyyyy.... She's a real treat to have a round. Cant'cha tell??? Defintely not one of Arizona's most shining stars, that's for sure! jest.gif

No kidding...this woman is killin me! When I posted this yesterday I noticed someone had posted another topic about her in the OT forum. She has no clue! Illegally crossing the border is not a crime? My favorite line from this:

And yes, when we find illegal workers, yes, appropriate action, some of which is criminal, most of that is civil, because crossing the border is not a crime per se. It is civil. But anyway, going after those as well."

Border comments spark diplomatic kerfuffle

Ottawa was rushing to defend its border security on Tuesday amid a diplomatic scuffle with the U.S., which erupted after Washington's homeland security chief suggested that the 9-11 terrorists entered the U.S. through Canada.

Video: http://news.sympatic...A_Border_090421

21/04/2009 7:50:26 PM

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made the comments during a media interview earlier this week, much to the chagrin of Canadians on both sides of the border.

In recent years, Ottawa has invested a great deal of effort into dispelling perceptions among Americans that Canada's border is an easy entry point for terrorists planning attacks on U.S. soil.

"Unfortunately, misconceptions arise on something as fundamental as where the 9-11 terrorists came from," said Michael Wilson, Canada's ambassador in Washington.

"As the 9-11 commission reported in 2004, all of the 9-11 terrorists arrived in the United States from outside North America. They flew to major U.S. airports. They entered the U.S. with documents issued by the United States government and no 9-11 terrorists came from Canada."

Later, Napolitano's staff attempted to tamp down the controversy by blaming the comments on a simple misunderstanding, said Wilson, who was the keynote speaker at the Border Trade Alliance meeting in Washington Tuesday.

"Her comment from her people is that she misunderstood," Wilson said, adding that he was planning a personal meeting with Napolitano in the near future.

The furor began when Napolitano was asked to clarify statements she had made about equal treatment for the Mexican and Canadian borders, despite the fact that a flood of illegal immigrants and a massive drug war are two serious issues on the southern border.

"Yes, Canada is not Mexico, it doesn't have a drug war going on, it didn't have 6,000 homicides that were drug-related last year," she said.

"Nonetheless, to the extent that terrorists have come into our country or suspected or known terrorists have entered our country across a border, it's been across the Canadian border. There are real issues there."

When asked if she was referring to the 9-11 terrorists, Napolitano added: "Not just those but others as well."

However, Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan downplayed the comments and said that Napolitano is well aware that Canada was not the source of the 9-11 terrorists.

"We spoke about it back in March, and we were sharing a chuckle at the fact that the urban myth does circulate," he told CTV's Power Play.

"Ms. Napolitano understood quite clearly, then and now, that none of the September 11 terrorists came through Canada, as the 9-11 Commission found."

Still, that positive outlook wasn't shared by other Canadian officials.

On Tuesday afternoon, RCMP Commissioner William Elliot expressed frustration with the comments during an interview on CTV's Power Play.

"I was somewhat surprised and disappointed," he said, adding he hopes the misconception has been cleared up.

"I understand and am happy to hear that she has issued a statement acknowledging that that didn't happen."

But Thomas d'Aquino, president of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, decried Napolitano's comments on Tuesday.

"I am a longstanding friend and ally of the United States, but sometimes failures in our two-way dialogue cause me to shake my head in sadness and dismay," he said in a press release.

"The claim that some of the 9/11 terrorists entered the United States from Canada is, quite simply, a myth - an urban legend that began with a handful of erroneous media reports in the days following the terrorist strikes."

With files from The Canadian Press

Seriously?.... How many times do we have to go over this? The secretary of DHS? How about focusing on the southern border! *Sings....Blame Canada...Blame Canada..*

CanadaPOE Experience - fun but left me w/ questions
QUOTE (borderdriver @ Apr 25 2009, 10:45 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I thought i'd just make a post just for my POE experience.

i crossed the Blaine truck crossing border @ about 8pm. I got the first check point. I have been crossing the border as a weekend regular so I started explaining to my sister that the first officer we're going to get is in training cuz there were 2 people in the booth and it was taking quite a bit longer than normal. I explained to the trainee that I have 2 vehicles traveling w/ me and gave them our passports and told us to go to the office. I parked my car and the officer in the parking area was kinda a sarcastic mean guy. My sister was like "what the?" lol. i told her to ignore it. that guy is sarcastic and friendly for what you're gonna get. lol

The first guy I got in the office had a mean look and all. I explained why I was there. Then he looked a bit confused and walked around. I told my family that he's either going for break/or his shift ends in 5 mins OR he just doesnt know how to process my K3. turns out he's going to be on his break soon. lol. So he passed me on to this really friendly and helpful guy. While I was waiting with my dad and sister I had explained, there were a bunch of officers standing around and not busy at all so they started talkin to us and asking us about my K3 experience and all that. We cracked jokes here and there. It was fun.

However I think i got an oldschool border patrol b/c I wasnt familiar with the process he was explaining to me. Basically, he said my papers were fine and its just going to take a couple of minutes. They took my finger print and took my picture. then while he was filling out papers, he said I didnt even need to take the fingerprints on my case so its less papers and its going to be faster process.

When everything was good to go, he explained that the I-94A card I have stapled on my passport is a temporary green card until I receive my I-551 in the mail. the I-94A card expires on April 23, 2011. Once I receive the I-551 card then I am a permanent resident in US. Then I asked them if i need to apply for AOS? and the other guy said yes once the 2 year is done. Then I asked them if I need to apply for EAD? then the guy said you can walk in in the Tukwila office. then I asked them what the process was with the paper work b/c at this point I'm pretty sure I'm not suppose to get a I-551 GC but I didnt want to ask too many questions and thought I can just research it b/c im pretty confused myself @ this point and I'll just roll with the punches. They said they will take my paperwork, forward it to the closest Service Centre, they will look at it, I'll be contacted with biometrics interview, and get my GC. While Im waiting, the card they stapled is what allows me to be in US. Then I asked them about importing my car and the guy almost forgot to tell me about the compliance letter and i reminded him. lol. he told me i can import my vehicle in Seattle but he doesnt know if they do inspection. He said they do inspection and that its better for me to go there and it takes 5 minutes.

Ok great, i leave and they said congratulations and enjoy my stay. took 30 mins.

Now here are my questions based on that temporary card:
1. I was going to send my application for EAD on monday. Do i still need to do that?
2. I am filing AOS on january, and applying EAD first. What do I do next based on the information you just read?
3. I was going to apply for EI today but its weekend. Can I just do the online application?
4. What does I-94A card let me do in US? on the back of the card, it says - WARNING: a nonimmigrant who accepts unauthorized employment is subject to deportation. Important Retain this permit in your possession; you must surrender it when you leave the US. Failure to do so may delay your entry into the US in the future.
It says multiple entry visa?

helpsmilie.gif

4. I can't help you with the rest of your questions, but I do know that K-3 is a multiple entry visa, it allows you to travel back and forth to Canada as you please before applying for AOS and getting your GC. I had a friend on a K-3 in ND, but I don't think they knew about VJ. ONCE you apply for AOS as a K-3, if you want the ability to travel to Canada you must apply for Advance Parole(AP)
As opposed to K-1 that is ONE entry only and you must stay to apply for AOS. Once you apply for AOS as K-1 you can apply for Advance Parole so that you can go back to Canada to visit.

CanadaI LOVE MY MIL!!!
My future MIL right now though with all the wedding planning, she is driving me and fiance nuts about wanting to invite HER cousins and aunts and uncles! I thought this wedding was supposed to be close family and friends, not people who have never met or last time they saw your son was in diapers! My fiance feels the same way! I really do have alot to be thankful for from her as my engagement ring diamond came from an anniversary ring that her husband gave her, it is definitely more than my fiance could have afforded given the appraisal that was done. Unfortunately the diamond fell out of her band and got sucked up a vacumn, she tore apart the bag to find it! She just never got it remounted. But that's another story!

Anyways, I am already worried about her behavior on the day of the wedding. Past behavior predicts future right? Well she has issues with alcohol and has been to treatment in the past, its been a problem for a long time! Well the last time i visited in Sept and the first time I met her the summer prior did not tote very well. His dad told me and my fiance he will be watching out for her on the day of not to embaress the both of us. Open bar not happening! *partial. He is so sick of her drinking and so sick of it tearing the family apart, he plans on leaving her to which my fiance is really not suprised about. So yeah thats what I get to look forward to after we are married, his parents separting or divorcing! She likes to air everyone's dirty laundry, including my fiances esp when she is drinking. He was not pleased about some of the stuff she had told me. I was definitely not pleased last time I visited either. On my birthday his dad made a wonderful steak dinner, margaritas before supper and then we played a trivia game afterwards. Well instead of stopping at 2 margaritas she was the ONLY one to keep refilling her drink, this time with bacardi. It was like playing with a kid during trivia, his dad kept on telling her to stop pouring some more, but she did not listen. I don't think his dad wanted to make a scene while I was present, but the day after we had a heart to heart about it. Well then after the trivia while her husband and son were trying to fix something in the kitchen she is badmouthing her husband, calling him a jerk and what not and badmouthing her son in front of ME! I excused myself and said I had to go to the bathroom, I did not feel like having a conversation with a drunk and later told my fiance what she was saying. He was livid. Everytime they get into arguments over the phone or he hangs up on her because he can hear her slurring, she acts like nothing is wrong the next day, but again probably because she can't remember.

I asked her 3 times for the guest list, the first two times she probably was drinking and did not remember...who knows. But the third time I asked i was also asking ok...rough idea of invites and # of people because I have not seen a list yet. Then she goes on to tell me about the "courtesy invites." I basically told her you better talk to your son about it because he will not approve. "Well then we just won't invite brad then will we." "I promise you these people will not come its too far for them." (15 hrs away)I lost it! Hello our room only holds 80! If we invite a 120 ppl then what if they actually do come! We are up the creek!

I made the mistake of sending an email to her like 3 years ago, and it was a comical email making fun of the former president bush. Well little did I know she was republican and took offense to it. It was a JOKE. Well the first time I met her in her tipsiness and the second time around after my birthday dinner she brings it up again! Like hello! We have been over this already! For god sakes I wouldn't get offended if she sent an email making fun of Canada!

I think once this wedding stuff is over with and *if she ever sobers up relations will get alot better for me and for my fiance, but who knows it could turn out worse esp with a separation or divorce. After reading some of your posts about MIL's being in close proximity it makes me kind of sad to know that I won't be as we will be 15 hours away from my family and his. Things could change though if he got PCS'd to a different base. I feel weird about saying mom and dad to them, but their first names would suffice. His grandparents signed a card from grandma and grandad and later asked if that was okay. I said it was. They didn't know if my grandparents were still around, unfortunately they are not but it did not offend me. I don't know if I could actually "say" grandma and grandpa because all I ever knew when I was growing up with Baba. (ukrainian)

OT: The first time I met his grandparents, I also put my foot in my mouth! His grandparents are such sweet people, you can really tell they still love and care for each other after all this time! I think if one passes the other won't be long after. Anyways, we were discussing video games and brad's uncle likes to play WoW. Well his grandparents are southern baptist, and she believes that because he played those games it turned her son into an atheist. Well I open my mouth and say oh a videogame, I don't think it can "make" someone do that. "Yes it can because my son is one, and I pray for him every day." whistling.gif A big O came out of my mouth. She went onto say that when her son visits they don't talk about religion or politics because they are on opposite ends of the spectrum now, I guess come to find out also after she told me that he married a Jewish girl. I cannnot remember if she said that she was still...in a word "practicing." I later asked my fiance why he didn't tell me more about his uncle! Other than he is a professor and his written software books!

CanadaI LOVE MY MIL!!!
QUOTE (poprocks @ Apr 24 2009, 11:15 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Ok, please leave this in Canada Forum...we're just havin some fun swapping stories...

As i'm sure some of you love your MIL's, my MIL to be... well, how can you not love her.... The great thing is that my fiance knows 'our' place and where she stands in the relationship, and it ain't between us... which is great... we laugh our butts off when we get off the phone with her...

So when I first met her... it was all 'so, what do you do?' and bragging to her friends about 'oh my son's girlfriend, she's Greek you know...what a nice girl'.... then she finds out you are marrying her son, and the tune changes lol!

Last weekend, he told her a few times he was going to MTL for interview... the whole time we were there, she was calling his phone leaving messages, 'where are you? I can't believe you are not coming to spend Greek Easter with your mother'... she's hilarious... we only told her 3x that we were in MTL... she is well aware of the fact that I live in TO and he drives 8 hours to see me...

When he first said that he was going up to 'Canada' for my Interview... she said 'why are you going all the way up there?', he explained it was for my interview. She said why canada? and he explained that, that's where I live... she says 'WELL, I THOUGHT SHE LIVED IN TORONTO!' HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA! rofl.gif

He asks her 'where do you think Toronto is'? she says 'I don't know, I just know you drive 8 hours!, you boys, I tell ya...' HAHA! She has 3 son's and no son has ever brought home a girlfriend worthy enough for her son's lol! She says 'these women these days, they have all these fancy tricks in bed' HAHAHA!

CanadaChanging your last name; thoughts?
Ok I am a little late, but here are my thoughts on changing my name. At first I was against it because in our family there are so many girls (cousins) and only 1 male cousin to "pass on" the family name. I am also against hyphenating my name, I just think it sounds funny. I wish there was a way for my last name to become a middle name without sounding ridiculous. My future husbands middle name is his mothers maiden name, and if we have children their middle name will be his mothers maiden name. I hope it will be a boy then! There are not many of us (my name) around! It's scottish, but I am not sure how the heck you get scottish out of that!

Anyways, now I am more at peace with my decision to change my last name to my future husbands. There is still a possibility that professionally I could go by my maiden name, I think it offers more privacy when dealing with some potentially votatile clients, but we will see. I couldn't deal with having a different last name than my children. Well I guess this can come up now.. lol...My VJ screen name is the first three letters of each of our last names.

CanadaImmunizations
QUOTE (jonesg111 @ May 4 2009, 05:03 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I got my record of immunizations from Manitoba where I grew up and I'm getting a list from Alberta where I currently reside.

Now when I was looking at the list of required shots there looks to be about 16 of them on there. I'm just a little confused that you would need to have all of those. If that is the case then is it better to get those done ahead of time or can they do them at the medical that I have already scheduled in Montreal?

Thanks

If there is a travel health clinic in your area that is associated with your health region. I would recommend going to them. I had a list of all of required immunizations and the records I already had, and once they gave me the Tdap (Adacel) they updated my records with the health region and gave me a copy to take to my medical exam.

The last revision before this was 3/30/09!!! That is crazy! Maybe its because the most recent revision left off "Evidence of Support." I was very suprised to not find it when I printed out my checklist! Oh well I already have everything I need for support evidence anyways!

You know what's funny, if we saw this episode years ago when we weren't immigration 'experts' we wouldn't give this silliness a second thought! But now we know the ins and outs so we know it's ridiculous laughing.gif

laughing.gif So true. Before I started researching the immigration process and was in the U.S on a student visa I did think the the immigration officials could come arrest me if I overstayed my visa by like a week or two. Ok its not a matter of could...they can, but they don't. It wouldn't have been hard to find me, i was only an hour and a half away from the border! They had my current address on file! rofl.gif

Heh, I watched this last night..I found it extremely funny that almost every time Katherine said Canada or anything to do with it she'd shudder as if to say "It's Canada so it has to be cold!"

I'm not gonna lie...I can't wait for Mike and Susan to get back together!!!

I know I feel the same way!
