Funny thing about Rogers.... while we were compiling records for our I-129, Mel called Rogers and asked for copies of her prior phone bills. They charged like $5 per bill, so roughly $60 total. Being charged that much for bills is ridiculous enough, but FFS, they sent them all to the wrong address. Rather than sending them to her current address, they sent each bill to the address that was originally on it when it went out. So she had 3 months worth sent to her old apartment, 6 months worth sent to a townhouse she no longer lived at, and then 3 months just never showed up...... until 2 weeks ago. Well over a year after it was supposed to arrive.

Haha sounds about right. I remember when we were trying to pay off her contract we first went to their store and was told that we actually had to call their home office. We then called the home office and they said we had to do so in the store. After about 5 of these nice lil run-arounds we just got a money order, sent it to the home office, and that was it. To this day I have no idea if they ever got their money or not haha.

Oh jeez! Sounds like I am going to have a great time trying to cancel the contract! wacko.gif headbonk.gif I hope it won't be too much, the expiration date is December, I am moving in September.

Oh yeah - I had to pay out my contract with Telus.

At least most of the costs are sort of spread out. Like between my interview and move was 4 months, so I had time to save for the truck rental. Then of course, a few years down the road you have to pay more money to remove conditions. It never really ends!

Oh damn that reminds me I have Rogers! crying.gif

I agree JillA! At least it wasn't almost $3000 all at once! The costs are sort of spread out! With the biggest chunk for fees being the 1010 for AOS! The other big chunk is payment of bills while unemployed! Car loan and student loans!! mad.gif

My fiance and I are officially engaged as of two weeks ago and we are ready to get the ball rolling! We are laying out our finances and trying to figure out how much the visa alone will cost us. I already know that the I-129 is $455 and the AOS is $1010 as of today, and I do realize that these can change the longer we wait to start. But what I'm trying to find out is are there any other fees in between the I-129 and the AOS? I thought I saw something for the medical exam once but now I can't find anything on it, and are there fees associated with any of the forms sent directly from USCIS?

Thanks for your help!!

There are costs for the interview as well as associated costs with gathering documents needed.
Medical- depends which area of the country you live, but in Vancouver- $350
Visa fee- $131
Passport photos-ranges ($30)
Police certificate (in SK)- $30
Birth certificate (in SK)- $25
Travel to interview & medical- (seat sale)- $250
3 days in Vancouver & missed work (Thankfully had family to stay with that lived in Vancouver metro)
Acquiring Canadian passport- (mine was about to expires) $80
Photocopying & other misc. $50
Tdap booster for medical (if you haven't had one in 10 years)-$80

Moving expenses- depends of course on your location and means of moving your belongings-Upack, Uhaul, PODS-starting around $1500?
Unemployment between POE to the USA, wedding, filing AOS, receiving EAD and acquiring a job int he USA- 2-4 months?? based on personal circumstances, when you move, get married, when AOS is filed, and current EAD processing times (EAD's are being processed quickly at the moment)

Removing Conditions on PR 2 years after conditional GC- $545??

To sum it up, its very costly, around $3000 or so, but so worth it in the end!!

Canadaso uh.. what now?
Yes you will get a letter from the Vancouver consulate saying that they have received your petition and to go to the website and download Packet 3 from the website! So you are already one step ahead! I faxed back my checklist the day I got it! As long as you have all the supporting documentation ready you are good to go! Don't know if you have done your medical or not, but the only place in western Canada to do immigration medicals is in Vancouver. Here is there website: www.wokingmedical.com, to get prepared for what you will need for that. Oh and congrats on your NOA2!! Your NOA2 has a 4 month expiration date, the consulate will automatically extend it if you have sent in your checklist and are waiting for an interview by then.

You can also call NVC to see if they have received your petition or forwarded it to Vancouver. NVC will also be able to give you your VAN case number if its been sent!

You know it is wonderful to be able to spend 6 months with my fiance while waiting for our approval. Then after 6 months no response. Come back to Canada. Thank goodness for family that welcome me with open arms and a room to stay in. Work temp jobs for 6 months then back to USA for another 6 months. Still no approval. Thank goodness for friends that are taking one month vacations that need house/dog sitters and a car to drive, lol.

Although all these things work out for me, and I am very grateful - don't get me wrong, but dang. Living out of a suitcase, wondering if I will work this week through the temp agency, half-hourly, daily checking emails and USCIS Status gets weary. We talk every night on webcam. I get to see the plants and trees I have planted (he's watering - not a bachelor's dream, lol); call my MIL to be and chat; see his kids/wives/grandkids on webcam and they want to know if it's snowing here, lol. I miss them sooo much.

I appreciate what USCIS needs to do to secure and protect their citizens, but please when it is so obvious that we are just everyday people, needing/wanting to be together could it not be a little qucker so it's not so stressful. 1.5 years and no response, but we know that our file is not lost or inactive it's just that they are busy.

Just sitting here after webcamming and still really sad and missing my fiance and needed to let it out.

I am really sorry about what is happening with your case! Have you contacted congressmen/senators? USC done INFOPASS? We are all separated from our loved ones during this process I definitely feel your pain! 1.5 years though is a bit ridiculous if you ask me! Keep busy and stay strong and keep hounding USCIS until you get some answers! You are definitely lucky that you are able to spend a full 6 months visiting your SO in the USA and those memories stay with you until you can be reunited for good. Webcams and telephone calls make up the rest in the meantime. I pray that you get the answer you are looking for from this painful immigration process. rose.gif

Congratulations on your NOA2!!

I can't answer your other questions, but as far as Packet 3 from Vancouver. All Packet 3 entails from Vancouver is a letter stating that they have received your petition, with VAN case number and directs you to access Packet 3 by downloading the checklist from their website. You can definitely get a head start on gathering needed documents listed on the Packet 3 before Vancouver sends you a letter stating that they have received the petition from NVC.

Ok just looked at Pkt 3 from VAN

s/he has no objection to the child(dren)’s immigration to the United States.

I don't know what I want to do if anything else at all, but I just wanted to see what you guys do for a living. I figured that my opportunity to change would be best after I move over. Since I can't work for X amount of months, I might go to school.

Share if you like!

There was a thread just like this a few weeks ago..or am I having dejavu? I couldn't find it! I remember answering that currently I am working in Social Services and plan to work in the field in the U.S. too, but right now I am open to other opportunities as well because I am going to be taking a big pay drop from what working in Social Services pays here in Canada than in the U.S. Maybe if I go back to school and get my MSW the pay difference wouldn't be as bad, but again I am not entirely sure that is the route for me. If I did get my MSW I would love to work in the military as a civilian, but again not sure how that works, maybe being the spouse of a member helps, because I am not a USC and sometimes that is a requirement to work on a military installation.

I have read a previous post of an interview but I'm assuming they dont ask the exact same questions every time, so maybe any out of the ordinary quesitons they asked you??

One other question - I am flying in from Edmonton tomorrow morning and will have my purse, cell, etc with me. I was told that there is some place across the street that has lockers to store these things in... can anyone share more details about this? (hey, it's the small things that count! )

Any help is great, thanks guys.

Hey Jesse!! Good to see you again!! Take a deep breath and relax! Very simple questions asked by the interviewer, how did you meet? etc....

Not sure if you have checked out the Canadian Consulate reviews, unfortunately there is no filter as interviews in MTL are mixed in there, but lots of Vancouver reviews to read.

Aren't you filing for a K-1? What's DOS? Are you talking about phoning NVC to find out when they got your application and when they're sending it out to the Consulate in Canada? K-1's are interviewed at Montreal and Vancouver. I never knew anyone other than the Consulate in those cities sent out Package 3, and set up interview appointments? Maybe this is something new?

DOS is Department of State. You are able to call them to find out if the consulate has sent out Packet 3 or Packet 4(interview letter). Before I got my letter in the mail and 2 days after I faxed back packet 3 to Vancouver I called DOS and they were able to confirm my interview date and what date the letter was sent to me. From what I understand the consulates still do the scheduling of interviews, DOS is there to track the consulates.

Did you tell the embassy beforehand that it was your intention to have the interview before the medical or does the embassy just assume that some people will do this?

This is a bit of a silly question but I've spent my whole life in a very small town where nothing ever happens. Downtown Vancouver at 5/6 am, anybody run into any unsavoury circumstances or is it a fairly safe area.

For myself, I had sent back the "check list" and waited to see the date they gave me, so I could make my medical. It turned out to be June 23rd, so I did email and ask what they preferred I do, and they said they were flexible, and to have the medical the next day was fine. Because the interview wasn't until 1:00, and I live on Vancouver Island, I was able to fly over in the morning, to the interview; stay over night, medical the next day, take results back after 2:00 and fly home that night. There are lots of places on Burrard and surrounding areas close to the Consulate and Medical. I stayed at the Hyatt Regency, but had got a GREAT deal from Travelzoo.

When you get there, get yourself a map. If you don't have anything else to do after your medical, walk down to Gastown. It's not that far, may 15-20 minutes. It's just a neat area for some shopping but they also have the spaghetti factory there, yum yum.

Also, as you are not allowed to bring bags, purses, electronic equipment, there is a little store directly across the street. It will have a Lotto and Passport sign in the window. They have bags to store your items, and price will go according to bag. I had a small purse type wallet and it was only $3 for them to keep it. The Starbucks won't because it's all part of the same building.

Oh yes Gastown is neat to check out! After the medical I went down the street to a coffee shop and then walked down to False Creek took about 5 minutes or so and got on the Aquabus that cost $6 roundtrip and it took me over to Granville Island. There is some really neat shops and they do have somewhat of a Food Court as well, which is in the same building as their public market.

I just told them at the interview that I will complete it Wednesday and they were fine with that, gave me a letter of authorization to return.

Downtown Vancouver 5/6 am isn't too bad, but again just be careful, it is the big city, the clinic isn't far from the Hospital. My cousin who lives in Burnaby took me down W Hastings St in Chinatown, he called it the worst corner in North America, and let me tell you its something you see in the movies, you would think you were in LA, cop cars parked on either side of the side walk, people all over the place, prostitutes walking down the street, extremely run down businesses. My cousin works on W Hastings a block away from the cruise ship terminal, I would go and drop off my cell phone in his office and walk back to the consulate. Every time I walked past his office there was these 2 street kids, probably 12 or 13 sleeping in front of a little opening in front of the building.

Other than that Vancouver is a beautiful city, just be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Took me too long to edit....grrr!

Anyways as far as Wednesday goes, the clinic will not release your medical results until after 2:15 pm, even if your interview is at 1 pm. Depending on how much time you have after your interview you could go to pick up the results then and submit the results to the consulate the same day. I have no idea what the hours are for the clinic or the consulate. There was only 3 people being interviewed on a Tuesday, for 1 pm appt, ALOT of time was spent waiting!! I probably didn't have my interview until almost 2:45 and didn't leave the consulate until after 3 pm, I was the second person to be interviewed.

Thanks for the info. When is the medical over? I've google mapped it and realize they're quite close but I'll have my four year old daughter with me and her legs arn't that long. I don't want to take any chances but getting it all done in one day sounds awesome.

If I were to get a Tuesday interview appointment do you know if the consulate allows you to bring in the results of your medical the following day?

The medical was over for me by 8:30-9 am, sometimes if they are very busy it will take you the entire morning. The key is to get in line early, fill out the paperwork they give you and return it as fast as you can and as accurately as you can, you will then get a number for the order of people to be seen.

The medical clinic is really not too far from the consulate, I would say around 6 blocks or so. You can catch a bus to take you down Burrard, but really its probably quicker to walk.

The consulate give me letter of authorization to return with my medical results. When I picked up my Visa on Thursday, they did not give me a letter of authorization to return the prior day. LOL by that time the guards recognized me...OH and do not stand in the line up for Visa pickup. Those people pick up their Visa's in the lobby, K Visa's have to go through security and up to the 20th floor for pick up.

Or can you book an interview for a Thrusday or Friday.

I think they do interviews at the consulate every day of the week, except for 1 wednesday a month the consulate is closed for staff development. You can request a specific day or days of the week, whatever will work for you. I requested Tuesday or Thursday and a range of dates for May. Thursday is quite popular and might take you longer to get, because its the day after the medical if you have to travel to Vancouver for it all in a few days. People have also had an interview on a Wednesday, but it would have to be a 1pm appointment as your medical is in the morning.

usaa is the best bank imo.

Ditto to that! Cannot wait to get USAA after I am married! Awesome customer service! I still want to keep a local bank and I had a WellsFargo bank account from when I was in college in the U.S. So far WF has been great, they also gave me a CC, to which the credit limit has slowly increased over the years.
