Thank you Rings for your posts

I think I found my answer, I forgot about the links in the Canada Immigration Guide

So as long as I provide a letter authorizing the goods to cross with my parents as well as make a photocopy of my K-1 visa I should be golden? I can't remember which other VJ Canada member has been in this situation, but I remember reading about it.

America does not charge GST only Canada does and if it's property already purchased in Canada, then GST has already been paid for, but Customs is another word for GOD which means they will randomly search people so if they are legal and have valid passports they should be fine to enter without disturbance... of course they may get searched, but that's how customs is.. they do that randomly. I would recommend they have their passports and proof that they will be returning to their country with them (ie: letters from the people they work with stating they have a job and proving that they own a home they pay for) reasons to return to their country because they are not here to overstay.

There is no overstay issue, parents have to be back at work so that will suffice, they have passports as do my sister and they will not have over 10K in currency when the cross. I am concerned about paying duty on items that will not accompany me and how long I have to import goods after initial POE.

What would I do without everyone in the Canadian forum? biggrin.gif

Question for you all, I tried doing a search but nothing came up that really answered my question. I am finally doing POE next week!!

I will be driving down in my vechile, packing as much as I can into my little car!

Here's my dilemma, my parents are coming down to the USA about 2.5 weeks later to attend my wedding, driving as well and I cannot fit ALL my wedding stuff into my car along with my belongings. Some of the wedding stuff is being packed into MY car, some my parents. What do I have to do in order for my parents to clear customs at POE with wedding stuff? Also some of the items were paid for by me, some by my mother. There will also be a few odds and ends that mom wants to give me as far as household items, if she can fit it! I don't want to run into a situation where they are asked to pay duty on anything.

I am currently making a packing list, but also want to add somewhere on there Items to follow, I will also not be able to fit my university textbooks and nor my parents, it will be another trip to Canada sometime next year pending approved AP.

I don't want to run into a situation where they are asked to pay duty on anything, nor myself, how long do I have to import my good duty free?

Thank you all in advance!

CanadaPOE Review
I made it to Nebraska!! Finally!! There was soooo much construction on I-29 on the way down though! Glad its done and over with! I'm so tired, but so happy to be here!! So not looking forward to unpacking! sad.gif Soooo much wedding stuff to do! Ahh!!

The closer I got to NE, the more the sun came out and the warmer it got! It had been a cloudy, dready, raining past 2 days of driving. The song on the radio as I was driving into town, "I can see clearly now....the rain has gone..." It was definitely fitting!! I feel like I'm at home. smile.gif

CanadaPOE Review
America!!! I'm baaaack! kicking.gif kicking.gif

It's been a while since there was a review for Portal, they did an excellent job today! I write this from an undisclosed location in ND ph34r.gif laughing.gif First off! The Canadian side did a great job dealing with the exportation of my engagement ring (I had to pay a $300 deposit almost a year ago to temporary import it). Too bad the deposit it has to be mailed to a U.S. address in CAD funds *sigh*

There were probably about 3 or 4 cars ahead of me at 2:30 in the afternoon. As I got closer to the booth the customs officers inside kept on looking at me and my car...they were probably like...omg how did she fit all that stuff in her car? Anyways so I pulled up the booth and it was a young guy, I think he's inspected me before. Asks me how I am, I hand over all my paperwork, and he says "You have alot of paperwork here". I said yes its for a fiance visa. He jokes and says "Oh the guys inside will have alot of work to do" and smirks. He says.."Looks like you have everything with you..." Smirks again. I respond um yes and then some! Asks the standard questions, did not ask for my packing list and instructed me to pull over and park to the right and go inside. I was greeted immediately by a very polite and professional middle aged man and he asked me to start filling out the import paper for my car. The computer he was at wouldn't work so he had to move. Asked me when I was getting married, asked if their was a K-2, and one woman CBP asked me why I waited so long to cross with the K-1. I said in order to plan a wedding and give family and friendsnotice, plus save up some $$$. He had me sit down for approximately 20 minutes while he worked on the computer. A male CBP came over and they talked about how long the I-94 is good for, the middle aged man I was greeted by wasn't sure about how long to make it for, his coworker was saying "well make it for 90 days, I think thats how long K1s are good for, its also been a while since I have done one",( I wanted to say...look at the manual!!) it had also been a long time for the first officer whom greeted me.

Took my fingerprints, paid the I-94 fee and was on my way, he peeked at my car to make sure the VIN # matched. I noticed on my I-94 it says MULTIPLE ENTRY. I said to him "K-1's are ONE-TIME entry"? He said "Oh thats just the way the computer prints them out" I basically said oh okay well I don't plan on going back to Canada and re-entering until after filing an adjustment and getting AP anyways.

Sooo...Should I be worried that the I-94 says MULTIPLE ENTRY? I am just curious if it will cause problems when I AOS, or if the right visa class was put into the SAVE system? I guess I am being paranoid...I've read on VJ some people having to go to correct their class of entry due to mistake at POE.

CanadaHow long did it take you to get Vancouver interview?
QUOTE (kuro @ Aug 22 2009, 11:05 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Sorry but what is DOS again?

Department of State, Visa Inquiry, basically they can track whether the Consulate has sent out Packet 3, or received a completed packet 3 from you, also can track whether an interview date has been assigned, or if the interview letter has been sent out.

minnewFemaleCanada2009-08-22 12:10:00
CanadaHow long did it take you to get Vancouver interview?
Once you send back your packed 3 by fax, you can email VAN to find out your interview date, but the better and most convenient way is to call DOS. Most of the time within 2-3 days after faxing back your packet 3 your interview date is assigned, if you have any special requests for certain days of the week they will accomodate those as well. I called DOS 2 days after faxing back packet 3. It took almost 2 weeks to get my packet 4 letter, and I had booked my airfare (at a seat sale) a few days after calling DOS.

Oh and congrats on your NOA2!! Won't be long now!!

CanadaMeet Gilbert
Soooo cute Carla!! I am sure Gilbert will be a wonderful addition to your family! My future in-laws have two mini weiner dogs, they absolutely love them to death! They are his dad's "girls". They are definitely loveable, the younger one that is black like gilbert is a princess, always looking for someone to give her love. The older one is more the mother type and only goes to his dad & mom for attention. They definitely get over excited when people come to the door, running up to you and barking and then peeing (thank god for hardwood& tile), then whining for you to pet them.

Good luck with your interview Quail! That sounds like how the medical went for me as well! They are so friendly and down to earth. There was someone else from VJ there!! Jauque! and I think GTB-Micheal. Jauque had her interview on Tuesday, medical yesterday and hopefully is picking up the Visa today!!

Oh how I wish there was still a doctor in SK for immigration medicals!

CanadaYou moved to the U.S. to be with your SO
I just moved to the USA about a week and a half ago. I definitely had alot of time to prepare for the big move, but nothing could prepare me for the whirlwind of craziness due to my wedding October 10th. I don't think its really "hit" me yet that I am here for good, I keep saying it because there were so many visits in between the time I moved back to Canada after being in school in the USA. So far things are going great, I am still in the "honeymoon" phase. I have lived in the USA before, but this time its different, I am in a different state with different surroundings and don't have any of my college friends around. I hope to meet some of my fiance's friends this weekend, but I also would like to have my own friends as well, but that will take time. I also hope to meet a fellow VJ Canada member who moved to the area shortly before me. It will be nice to know there is another Canadian who understands, and also the military aspect too! smile.gif I am going to have a hard time after the wedding and filing for AOS I think, it will be a huge change from being busy every day on the go to boredom and wanting an EAD. When I lived in the USA I never thought too much about what I could/could not get in the USA as far as food products..etc...now I am definitely thinking more about it and missing certain things that I really enjoyed sad.gif
Oh and liquor! I have not been able to find Captain Morgan Dark Rum in the US so far! All I have seen is the Spiced rum! I have no idea why the US stores don't carry it! I find it very weird that you can buy liquor at Walmart....right next to the milk/pop. I guess it depends on the state, in ND there was a separarte "liquor" store at Walmart.

I think once I am settled I may be able to answer this question better...

Welcome to VJ kayla!! Just wanted to say take a deep breath and relax! It will all work out fine! It's alot of paperwork and information to digest all at once, but it will get easier! Just take a look at the guides and always go to USCIS.gov for forms because sometimes the links on the guides can be the outdated forms. You definitely do not need a lawyer for this process!

Enjoy your thanksgiving in Canada Sapphire! Nothing to worry about! I am getting married thanksgiving weekend! We asked the catering department at the venue if they would make a turkey and stuffing for us! (It wasn't on the menu). I am sure it won't be quite the same, but I think its going to be nice for all the Canadian guests joining us. CanadaBridezilla Update...(I think I'm OK posting this here...)
QUOTE (thetreble @ Aug 8 2009, 06:09 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
There's More!

Sadly, on Wednesday my Father In Law was asked to g o talk to Bridezilla and Chris at their condo. So, he drove down there thinking that maybe they were going to settle all the bad feelings and put them to bed.

NOT WHAT HAPPENED.

Bridezilla berated my father in law for a good hour. She told him he ruined her wedding. She said that he was a nasty and mean person because he didn't spend much time talking to her family. She said that they were "equals" now and called him "Frank". (In our family, we still call Mr. and Mrs.) When my FIL told her that he didn't think they were equals due to him being her FIL, his age, experience, etc. she refused to accept it and said they were on the same level now.

She said she resents the fact that my Sister In Law's boyfriend, Canadian guy named Josh, was "allowed" to be in the family photos when she wasn't allowed to be in them in our wedding a few years back when her and chris were "just" boyfriend and girlfriend. (Not true...we never dis-included her..she was MISERABLE at our wedding because it wasn't hers..)

And then, she threw out one of the biggest insults you could probably throw at someone...

She said, "And, in closing, Frank, I just want you to know that I think you are CHEAP".

He was shocked. He didn't know what to say. My FIL is far from cheap. He's an incredibly generous man. He may be a little stubborn and stern, but he is NOT cheap.

The worst part? My brother in law sat there the entire time and did not say one word. So, my father in law just got up and left.

This is not the kid I knew. The kid I know is respectful, funny, knows right from wrong....I don't know what he's doing.

I was worried this would happen without my AP, think what bugs me most is that if I had the means to go to Canada for a funeral I can't right now! Well... I could then i would have to start all over again.
Just wish I could be there, crying.gif he was such a sweet man, would see him every other month when we went to visit my baba... He would always go check on her... When he could still drive, and his Ukrainian cooking.... Mmmmmmmmm

they should provide all of the tools they need, along with garbage bags.

I've never heard of the "pave your driveway scam"? I have been keeping track of their hours, and we are in agreement thus far on how many hours they've worked. The problem is, so far, they've worked 10 hours, which is fine, as she said it would take them 8-10, and we thought 10 was fine, however because they didn't cut the sod in those two places (not our fault!), they have to come back and now she wants to charge us the labour for that. She didn't give us a "I will have this done in 8-10 hours), she gave us a "this should be done in approximately 8-10 hours", and that's what she signed. However by the time it's done, it will have been maybe 12 or 13 hours. And we did agree to an hourly rate, so this is where I'm having some problems...well, that and having to tell her and have her YELL at me. laughing.gif Of course they should have used their own tools, but they didn't have any...I couldn't refuse to let them use ours. lol They did go buy the bags from Lowe's and didn't provide me a reciept, but now you got me thinking that maybe she will? sad.gif

the pave the driveway scam:

just a few links of many out there on this topic.

I had a friend who just bought a new house and needed her driveway paved, I don't think she got scammed, but I do believe the "contractor" that paved it for her and was a complete idiot. The day after they realized her driveway was not even and looked like sh$t. She called the guy back and he said he wasn't going to do the job over again, it looked fine. She cancelled the check. I guess thats what you get for someone who says they will do it for less expensive than other contractors...

They had another contractor come and look at the driveway in an attempt to fix it, the contractor asked her fiance how drunk was he was...Her fiance told him he wasn't, that they hired someone to do it....

1. Being that I already have a US bank account that is active from when I lived in the US, can I set up an account with them before I move?

2. Does customhouse do transfers from your Canadian bank account to American bank account? AND your transfers from American bank account back to your Canadian bank account. I would definitely need them for BOTH and would make my life so much simpler.

Yes to both questions - I set up my CH account well before I moved, and you can transfer both ways.

lol! SC is wicked hot to me, I just got back on Tuesday, it was 90 when I left at 7 am. ( and 58!! when I landed in Buffalo, so cold here I have slept in a hoodie) If Florida is hotter then SC I better stay far away unless its winter. Sumter isn't too far North of Charleston I think, we went to Fort Sumter last fall and it was pretty... well kinda boring unless you like the civil war... But we did see dolphins in the harbor on the way back. (I'm practising my American spelling)

I went to university in S.C. (Clemson University). July through September you literally think you're going to melt. Just wait til you see the palmetto bugs. rofl.gif

I loved SC when I visited there, actually the temperatures were below normal last Sept, but still very nice!! My fiances grandparents live on Kiawah Island, SC, a nice short bike ride to the beach, man it was beautiful, but probably a 30-45 min drive to Charleston. You should see the waterfront houses!! Wow! What freaked me out about Kiawah though is the wildlife aka. Alligators that are lurking in the ponds next to the golf courses in your own backyard sometimes and of course on all the bike and walking paths around Kiawah. Its the tourists that feed them that screw them up and make them not fear humans, but most of the the time if you stay away from them they won't bother you.
