Oh I was told by one of my former co-workers that if you have a baked-on mess in your casserole dish or roasting pan to let it soak with warm water and put a dryer sheet (bounce) in it. I tried it and it works like a charm! Other than doing dishes, thank goodness for dishwashers! I hate cleaning, hence a previous thread, i would definitely hire a housekeeper!

ok this got my attention, I feakin HATE cleaning roast pans, but alas am a Sunday roast freak so it must be done!

what exactly is a dryer sheet for ?????

how long is it left in the roasting pan with the warm water???

good.gif

edited to add, I just usually spray a little oven cleaner on the rough spots, but would rather not mess with the chemicals..

It loosens all the baked-on #######. I usually let it soak for 15-30 minutes, depending on how long it takes to loosen all of it.

CanadaVisa Journey Cost?
Here is a thread about costs from about a month ago:

http://www.visajourn...h...859&hl=cost

At least alot of it is spread out over time, they don't hit you all at once. The most expensive USCIS fee being AOS $1010, but its the relocation to the USA and being without work while waiting for the EAD that can be the most costly, whether its drawing on savings or your SO supporting you with any bills you may have during that time.

CanadaBorder Crossing Saturday..
They probably will not ask if you are moving with a K-1. I've only been asked once about medications when travelling, but I don't have the pharmacy tags. Planned Parenthood here is so much cheaper (even with insurance), so I just ask them to make a photocopy of the prescription and they stamp it and sign it saying its for out of country travel. I had to do it when I lived in the U.S., although I was never ever asked about medications and never had to provide the prescription.

CanadaUniversal Healthcare Message to Americans

It's an 8 minute video, but well worth the watch. I would like to see references to the data that the experts talk about in the video.

http://www.leaderpos...6876/story.html

SASKATOON — Some Saskatchewan health-care experts and advocates are diving headfirst into America's bruising debate over public health care, with a new video intended to puncture myths about the Canadian system being spread by opponents of so-called "socialized medicine."

An eight-minute video running on YouTube — which racked up more than 22,000 views as of Thursday afternoon — features people such as former Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow, physicians and researchers speaking directly to Americans about Canada's history of health reform.

"If they want to use our system as a whipping boy in their own propaganda wars, it's mildly irritating," said Saskatoon health and policy researcher Steven Lewis in the video, titled Universal Health-Care Message to Americans From Canadian Doctors and Health Care Experts.

In the video Romanow, who headed the Royal Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada, said the myths have been perpetuated by insurance company lobbyists.

"(Canadians) object to the misrepresentation, mischaracterization of the Canadian system by American opponents," said Romanow.

"The Canadian Health Act tapped into Canadians' emotions. The response Canadians are having now to the battle that's going down in the United States taps into Canadian emotions."

Produced by two Saskatoon men, Don Kossick and Steve Wolfson, the video was shot during the Canadian Medical Association's annual meeting in Saskatoon this month.

With a side event for Canadian Doctors for Medicare running parallel to the association's meeting, Kossick found no shortage of health professionals wanting to speak out for Canadian health care, flaws and all.

"I had hoped our government would have something like this," said Kossick. "It kind of walked away from the debate."

The video is getting a lot of positive feedback from Americans who say they're grateful to hear the other side. That success has Kossick and Wolfson thinking about a followup.

"We certainly going to look at a larger version," said Kossick. "Americans really want to hear the Canadian story."

A large chunk of the story is the economic tale. Much of the American debate has focused on the possible increased cost associated with universal health care.

In Canada, the cost per capita of health-care spending is $300, compared to $1,000 per person in the States, said Dr. Linda Silas, president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions.

"And everyone here is covered," she said in the video.

The 25th anniversary for the Canadian Health Act is a time Canadians should be pushing their story into the American debate, said Dr. Ryan Meili, Canadian Doctors for Medicare board member and former NDP leadership candidate. He said it's been tough to watch the debate south of the border.

"You should worry about the best care possible for a patient, not the dollar," he said in a phone interview.

Well its not the state I am moving to.... laughing.gif Although what I have seen of NE is nice, we will live in the Omaha metro, the winters aren't AS cold as SK, and they end sooner.....NE you actually get a spring/summer/fall, and the summers can be pretty hot, so its a good tradeoff I guess. I would probably pick a more southern state like TN or GA. I absolutely fall in love with the mountains and beauty every time I go to visit my fiance's family who live in north Atlanta metro. Of course if I ever moved down there I am sure I'd be saying "Get me outta here" during the hot and humid summers. The humidity does wonders for my skin, hair and nails, I had never seen them look so good, I hate dry air!!

LOL I seriously laughed at the poor driving test kid, that really had to suck haha.

I got a call from insurance today and they sent another inspector out and BOOYEAH, my car is considered a total loss smile.gif I didn't get the exact number yet but the damage was estimated at $18,500. The frame was cracked in three different places, the axle was cracked in the back and got dangerous close to puncturing the gas tank, and the engine was actually all jacked up from hitting the guy in front of me after he blew me up from the back. Poor guy's insurance is going to sky-rocket but in the next few weeks I get another new car smile.gif I guess I can look at it as I'm getting a few more weeks of the awesome new car smell hehe smile.gif

Thanks everyone for your concern, I'm seriously convinced if I didn't workout and stretch so hard everyday that I'd be much worse off. Luckily my neck is already back to normal and I've been able to workout every night since so I'm keeping my fingers crossed kicking.gif

Thank goodness they totalled it!! Woo hoo!! Another new car!!

That sounds awful bowflex! Thats ridiculous they didn't total it!

Please take care of yourself, you may not feel the injury now, but I am suspecting you might have some whiplash. I was in a car accident sort of like that as well, if I didn't have my seatbelt on I would have been toast, the car was an 84 and did not have airbags, the seatbelt saved my life. I had a huge gash on my neck from where the seatbelt held me back from going through the windshield. I was in physio and had SGI paying for massage therapy as well.

That poor 84 citation....it ran so well, totalled it of course, I am sure it still would have been running to this day. *sigh* they just don't make GM vechiles to last like that anymore.

Will it be a problem at the border that I have 2 vehicles with my stuff? I just figure we'll all go into secondary.

Not at all, if I recall correctly Julybride had 3 vehicles with her!

haha wow. i guess it's no surprise that the women moving have more stuff than the dudes.

my fiancee is going to give away his furniture and things like that, but he is a musician and has tons of instruments, pedals, keyboards...his computer. expensive stuff. that is too heavy to take on a plane but much less than a studio apartment worth. we're trying to figure out the best course of action. :\

That is the same predicament for me as well, I wouldn't be able to fill a 10ft truck even, or a ABF. SK has no access to PODS or ABF though! mad.gif A minivan size would be perfect for me! But unfortunately its going to be just me and my car. LOL.

Does your fiance have family that could rent a minivan or something? Not many rental car places do the one way rentals though, but it would be worth a shot to ask. May be cheaper than the smallest 10ft Uhaul truck. Also a little "birdie" told me that Uhaul will rent their cargo vans for 1 way moves, even though on their website it is listed for in-town only.

Congratulations Ron/Sharon!!

I have never been called by the consulate, but my fiance (USC) was called by the Vancouver Consulate almost 2 months after they approved my visa. A woman called him and identified herself as a worker from the US Consulate in Vancouver, the phone number with area code even showed up. She asked him to confirm the address that I will be living in the USA, and asked if I had moved yet.

All of this I thought a little weird, we did have to file a change of address form for our petition a month after submitting it, but I think it has to do with some "other" things on my fiance's side with work.

It can definitely be any combination of the above. We sent the package 12-20-08, NOA1 date January 14 -09. When we sent in our k1 stuff to USCIS it took almost a month for the NOA1 to be received. The check did not cash until a day or two AFTER he received the NOA1 in the mail. At the time he lived in the boonies so mail took an extra day or two by horse and buggy.... laughing.gif I've never seen anyone else have their check cash AFTER they have already received the NOA1, I thought it was strange after looking at timelines and such, which some people post on their siggys or comments in their timelines and some do not about when the check clears.

I got that email today too! I hope nothing changes so far the customer service has been great!

Question for all you Customhouser's, I did my first transcation and I am just wondering if it usually takes a bit longer for the payment to be processed the first time around? How fast usually do they process your transaction? The email I got confirming the booking says the funds need to be IMMEDIATELY available.

It took them 4 business days just to take the funds out of my CAD account to be sent EFT to USA. Then got an email saying it was processed and the next business day (will be)the payment was "sent". I guess we will see how fast my US bank processes the EFT, if it nots there in 5 business days customhouse can put a trace on it. Has anyone ever had any issues?

It does take about 5-7 days to see the money in the US account.... For EFT that's normal. The funds do need to be available right away, but it takes a few days for the money to come out of your account. I've never had any issues, I've done dozens of transactions over the past year!

Thanks JillA!

Speaking of strippers, I'm going to see one tonight, a male that is laughing.gif I'm in town for my girlfriend's bachlorette party, we booked a room at a hotel downtown. At 8 a "pizza man" is dropping by for delivery and he'll be dropping off more than a pizza laughing.gif

Funny enough...I get absolutely nothing out of a man dancing naked...I think they look foolish in a comical type of way...I don't know why...I find a man more attractive in a masculine more laid back 'smooth operator' type of portrayal...not like a freak bouncing around with his *ahem* flapping around like a bald chicken having a seizure... rofl.gif

I am attracted to very manly men...very masculine...I find the dancing makes them look feminine to me...lol...

Some one had mentioned the 'dark side' of dancing...and it's very true...I for one have always distanced myself from such people...I was raised by a Greek father that was anti everything and put the fear of God in me....I never did drugs in my life...never abused alcohol or sex....I was always to scared of the stuff my dad warned me about.... But you do see it...I mean not in depth...if you don't look for certain things most times it doesn't find you....but you would see the pimps trying to recruit girls at the club....the drugs...even girls that you know that were brokering deals outside of the club aka 'prostituting'....I truly feel bad for those girls....

This reminded me of the scene in The Proposal where they took Sandra Bullock's character out to see the one male stripper that was in town.

Did anyone else see this movie? That whole male stripper routine was a riot!

Yes I saw it! rofl.gif I think everyone in the theater was like "ewwwwww"....it was funny though!!

Poprocks, you are a great writer!! I truly was enlightened by your post. There is alot of generalizing going on from everyone in this thread, but of course that will happen, everyone has stereotypes and bias whether they choose to admit to it or not. I never would have thought that the highest drug use is from other professions, but what got me thinking is how many strippers/strip clubs are there out there?(Of course it depends on the geographic area..etc..etc) In proportion to the lawyers, blue collar workers, hair dressers...etc..etc. There is definitely going to be the "good" and the "bad", I think most women and men realize that when it comes to strippers/strip clubs, unfortunately you hear alot of stories of the ones who do "extra favors", and both sexes tend to focus on the "bad". Not saying its right or wrong, but thats just how it is. Pick another subject and the same conclusion will happen.

Anyway, that stripper in England had to be THE most grossest thing I have ever seen in my life. I won't regale you with all the gory details but there was one time he got up on our table and was swinging his Nibbles and Bits around, and then he grabbed my beer and stirred it with his pecker and gave it back to me. I got up and walked out. I think he did that on purpose because he could tell by my body and facial expressions how grossed out I was and he was trying to get back at me. I definitely didn't fit in with that crass crowd because.... trust me.... it got much worse than that. There was definitely a line crossed between entertainment and obscenity.

I once asked this a long time ago, but... how do Canadians tip strippers? In the U.S., you generally walk up to the stripper dancing on stage and give her a few bucks. Sometimes she lets you stuff the cash into panties and other times you can just toss it onto the stage.

The problem I see with Canadian cash is that there are $1 and $2 coins. So what do Canadians do? Do you fling loonies at her? Maybe part of her routine is avoiding a barrage of coins? tongue.gif

I went to a strip club in MB once and the guys would fling loonies and toonies in her crotch, she would grab them with her....well you know what..... laughing.gif She would go up to each guy and spread em....

CanadaHow do you feel about strippers?
I had an ex boyfriend who I guess you could catagorize as a "regular" to the strip clubs. He in fact would go with his buddies and at one time went with his father. When he returned they both had glitter all over their faces. They go a few times a month. It really did bother me alot.

If your husband/fiance/boyfriend is really not interested in going and only would go for a "special occasion" like his bachelor party then that is okay. I have told my fiance I do not mind if there is a bachelor party and strippers, but I would really appreciate it if he didn't get any lap dances. "Look but don't touch." I don't care if he gets boobies in his face while they are on stage or he is throwing money at them or whatever. I just don't like the idea of a stripper giving him a lap dance and grinding all over him. My fiance said "well its not like I am going home with them", yeah I understand that, and I also understand that he is not a regular at the strip clubs, but the lap dances would really bother me. I asked him if he would be okay with me getting a lap dance from a guy, I guess it doesn't bother him much.

I am not interested in male strippers at all, watching them dance okay maybe, but getting too close to me and giving a lap dance...ummm...no!

Anyways, if he got a lap dance from a stripper at the club, he already knows not to even bother touching me when he gets home, go straight for a shower and burn the clothes... laughing.gif

CanadaMixed feelings about having civil wedding first
Yes there was definitely some mixed feelings about the courthouse for us. WE were willing to do it because of the immigration costs, unemployment costs, all the expenses incurred from a wedding. Our parents basically stepped in and said you guys are only doing this once, even if it means a few more months away from each other in the grand scheme of things, has really not been that bad for me. I have been keeping busy with work and saving up more $$ for AOS. Our parents also agreed to pay for most of the wedding expenses (80%), which aren't that many considering we will only have 50-60 ppl come. I got the visa in May and I am now moving down this month for my wedding in October. It definitely is doable to plan a wedding(big white) with a K-1, but just a few different considerations need to be made.

So I phoned my Investors today and they said they have to close out my account. That they can no longer help me with my money as I am moving to America. I have a considerable amount for a person of my age due to family inheritances.

Is this money going to be taxed when I bring it to the states? How would I handle bringing it there.
Is investing in the states like it is when you invest in canada with brokers/investors.

Bcause the markets went down I have lost some money, is it better to wait and watch the exchange till there is a really good day to change it over or is there something I can do legally and keep the money here by putting it in something else like a high intrest savings or something like that where I will not take the money out and it will just grow. Which is basically what my investors were doing.

Any help would be great! I really just want it to grow back to what it was.

If it is a considerable amount, I would suggest using Custom House, they will be able to get you a better rate than the bank. www.customhouse.com. It's free and very easy to set up! You will need a Canadian bank account as well as American bank account to use it.

I am not sure about the taxation issue, someone else might have a better answer for you.

CanadaWhere were you when the towers fell?
I hadn't met my fiance yet, I was in high school, I think grade 12. Usually I listen to the radio in the morning when I got ready, for some reason which I can't figure out, I didn't listen to the radio that morning. I did not hear about it until arriving to school that day. There were some teachers that actually taught, but I remember one we were allowed to watch the news instead. My math teacher couldn't teach for about half an hour because she was on the phone with family trying to get a hold of a family member who worked near the Towers to make sure he was okay. I think she eventually did, but she was a write off, she was so emotionally a wreck to teach. I remember my English teacher let us watch the news and also talked about what the Towers "symbolzied" as well as the Pentagon and White House. It was definitely a scary day and even more scary when I realized that these were terrorists who wanted to kill the President and they themselved wanted to die. I was in shock at first, cried alot, was definitely scared to be attending university in the USA after high school.

It is definitely a day that people will talk about and everyone will remember what they were doing and where they were. It sickens me, it makes me angry, it makes me cry, it makes me realize that it was a day that changed the course of history and the laws regarding entering the USA and immigrating as well.

Side note: My fiance was also in NYC with his aunt and uncle in the summer of 2001, has pictures of himself in front of the Towers, he is sickened that just a few months laterthey were gone. My fiance was still living in GA at this time and was attending college. About a year later he enlisted in the AF. We didn't meet until 2005, but had talked online in late 2004.

There are lots of songs out there regarding the attacks, some more political than others, It should be a day to remember the victims of 9/11. I really like Alan Jackson's "Where were you when the world stopped turning" It seems to fit the subject of this thread.

CanadaHaving a tough time...
QUOTE (SonoranSongbird @ Aug 24 2009, 12:32 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi, Laura. I've not read the entire thread, just the OP. Anyway, I did not grow up in the same city as any of my extended family. My cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents all lived in Philadelphia and I grew up in upstate NY, so about a day's drive or one-hour plane ride (then my grandparents moved to Florida, which was further). We saw them regularly, just not daily. I'm not all that close to any of my cousins, but that is mostly due to the age difference. My mom's sister's kids are 10 years older than me and my sister, my dad's brother's oldest daughter is 10 years younger than me, and the youngest is I think 15 years younger. Actually now that my younger cousins are grown women and the age difference matters less, I am getting to know them better. But I was VERY close to my grandparents and am close to my sister and aunt and uncle. I did not feel deprived by not living in the same town as my extended family. Visiting relatives was just a fun part of growing up.

I can completely relate to not being close with any of my extended family, none of my extended family lived in the same city as my parents and I. I saw my grandmother about once a month, she was quite old by the time I was a teenager so she was not into the fun stuff with the grandchildren, as her health was deteriorating, and we were not close emotionally either, doesn't mean I don't miss her and still love her. Not having my mom and dad around for my kids though has definitely been on my mind as well as I move closer to the big move date. Its also a concern for my fiance who is military, we will both be away from family and it will be tough for sure, but like others have said there is ways around it, visits, webcams, phone calls, anything to stay in touch with family far away. I knew all of this before getting myself into the whole immigration process and thought it would be a piece of cake to deal with, but as the time gets closer I realize its not going to be as easy as I thought it would be. There is a possibility of moving closer to his family once he retires from the military, but then its going to be farther away from mine, either way we will make it work.

Maybe this is a regional thing....but just a question for you guys....in the city of about 200,000 I live in SK EVERY apartment has a security system. Even the cheapo apartments have a buzzer system so that you don't have any unwanted people walking through your building.

See earlier post, when I lived in the small ND college city, after my first year in residence I lived in an apartment. NONE of the apartments had any type of security "buzzer" system. Not even the most expensive apartments! I was a little bit miffed, but that is coming from living in a bigger city where if I was living in an apartment, higher chance I would get broken into. Granted my parents home did not have a security system, but it did not make me feel safe living alone in an apartment building with no security system. I could have moved back to residence, but instead found out about campus apartments and moved there, as they had "security" (somewhat). You needed a key in order to get through the front door of the building, no one who didn't live there(unless they tampered with the door) without that key could wander through the building.

The place I will be moving to the apartments do not have any type of security system, and its hit and miss with other complexes in the area, some are pretty $$$$$, probably some of the "newer" complexes are having this as a standard feature. Even in NE I have seen some gated communities, most of these brand spankin new, but the only time I ever saw those before were honestly in the south, I guess it has to do with like someone else said, on one hand you can have a "bad" area right next to a "good" or wealthy area...(other side of the tracks). The crime rate for NE is definitely higher than in ND, but no where near the rates of NYC, NJ, and all the other cities mentioned in this thread already.

I felt safer living in the USA. I lived in a small college city in ND for almost 6 years and I felt alot safer than back in the bigger city in SK. The small college city, everyone left their doors and windows open, cars unlocked, WITH the keys in the ignition, I felt like I could go outside for a walk and not be bothered. I definitely would not go out at night for a leisurely walk, thats just something I have never done, but walking home from the campus library at night did not feel unsafe. Crime rate of the small city..0%..lol.. For the most part people were friendly, said hello and were civil. You do not get that in the "big city"...people are rude and only care about themselves, they do not make chit chat with you at the grocery store, the pharmacy,...etc..etc..

Flipside, the city of about 200,000 in SK, I do not live anywhere near close to the "core" area of downtown or the famous "North Central" where people have been murdered, stabbed, raped, robbed..etc.etc...This city used to be known as the crime capital of Canada. I still do not feel safe here at all. We always keep our doors locked, our house locked, windows closed, we had an attempted break-in at one point, our basement windows were tampered with. The native gang problems in this city are unreal, so are the drug problems, there are just some places in this city day or night you do not want to be caught walking in. Anyone ever heard of the Oldsmobile gang? LOL. Car thefts about 10 years ago were outrageous.

Now...to where I will be living.....I am not entirely sure if I will feel safe or not, the 2x I have been there I felt relatively safe. We will live in an apartment complex that is intertwined with a members only golf course and clubhouse and secluded as well. It is an an area where I would say is "family oriented", quiet and away from traffic, with homes, schools, parks, etc..but again you never know who or what your neighbours might be like. There are people who have come up to our parking lot area and just sit there...(because again its secluded, sort of at the top of a hill) People I guess have noticed because police showed up and were questioning all the neighbours about the vechiles that showed up and what the people look like. If I had to make a guess, it would be a drug deal. Once I move down I am sure I will sure all the areas of the metro area. I did take a look at the sex offender registry and the closest one would live about 3 miles away, and a total of about 15 of them living in the city, now the entire metro area I am sure there was ALOT more than that!

2- YOU cross first. Have your parents IMMEDIATELY behind you at the crossing. By you going first, you can explain you are activating your K1 Visa and your parents are helping you move your personal belongings (don't mention wedding -- it's all your stuff). [/b]

Minnew mentions that the second car will be travelling two and a half weeks later, so if she has to wait at the border, well that could get old fast laughing.gif

laughing.gif Yes it would! A signed authorization, copy of my packing list with list of the items to follow (that my parents are bringing) copy of K-1 and if I can get my printer/scanner hooked up I will send a photocopy of my I-94.

Thank you Rings for your posts

I think I found my answer, I forgot about the links in the Canada Immigration Guide

http://www.visajourn...howtopic=191858

https://help.cbp.gov...;p_new_search=1

So as long as I provide a letter authorizing the goods to cross with my parents as well as make a photocopy of my K-1 visa I should be golden? I can't remember which other VJ Canada member has been in this situation, but I remember reading about it.
