Well done to all the recent approvals/touches/interviewee dates. Still nothing here.

Mercedes left for the USA today - only for 3 weeks but I'm heartbroken.

United KingdomLondon Embassy - no phones allowed?
You can bring your phone and a small bag - they will keep them at the gate house and give you a number ... simple ... don't bring a laptop though!!!

If he's coming to a main line station there will be left luggage at the station.

Hope this helps you both!!!

Ah we did indeed Andy!!!

As I said before, "I used to read about people opening the envelope on here and think, "duh". " As it's Merc I'm putting it down to a blonde moment!!!

Just so everyone knows, we got our visa papers back today, safe secure and locked up tight in a location known only to me!!!

Well it went back yesterday but the guy who lifted it was an imbecile so whether or not it gets there is another thing.

He didn't even bring the right size bag with him and shoved it into an A4 one instead.

I'll call them later and see what the progress is ... not sure how or when it will return.

Hey Sara,

How are you holding out? You Oregonians and your 'must open every envelope' attitude. Well, I guess that's why you are pioneers!!!

Yeah, it will be sorted. I'm just glad I didn't need to return my passport as we are off to Paris on Thursday for a romantic weekend.

All these touches you've been getting ... methinks you'll get news very soon.

Fingers crossed for you.

Oh, by the way everyone. I didn't shout at Merc for opening it, just sighed and sucked my breath in. I think I'm 100 points up in the best boyfriend ever scale.

I did indeed call the Embassy and Poiteen, you are correct. We send the envelop back by SMS and rearrange them to get it back to Belfast when it's resealed.

We booked our flights today, we leave Ireland, Mercedes via Dub-JFK and me visa Belfast-London-JFK so I can get the EAD stamp. This is where it leaves the nice dream to reality realm. Very, very exciting.

United KingdomGood News and Bad
Hey Guys,

So first the good news ... my visa arrived.

Second the bad news ... Mercedes opened the godd*m envelope without reading the DO NOT OPEN, stamped all over it in large print.

Geez, talk about putting a dampener on things.

I used to read about people opening the envelope on here and think, "duh". Partly my fault in that I didn't tell her it was coming and not to open it as the couriers never called or texted to say they'd be here and partly her fault for NOT READING THE GODD*M ENVELOPE.

Anyway, I feel bad as she's in tears and feels really bad and is inconsolable over this.

So, any suggestions on how to rectify this, apart from the obvious of giving my beloved a lobotomy.

R

PS How many foot rubs do you think I'll be able to milk this for?

PPS If you didn't laugh what could you do?

United KingdomWedding Song
We are using Bob Dylan's 'The Wedding Song' for people sitting down, The Decemberists 'Red Right Ankle' for Mercedes walking down the aisle and In Spite of Ourselves for our first dance.

Red Right Ankle Sample Lyrics ...

"This is the story of your red right ankle And how it came to meet your leg
And how the muscle, bone, and sinews tangled And how the skin was softly shed
And how it whispered “Oh, adhere to me For we are bound by symmetry
And whatever differences our lives have been We together make a limb.”

In Spite of Oursleves Lyrics ... it's a duet between male/female vocals ...

Yes that's the doctor I was talking about. Very scary! lol. She certainly was very direct.

Her first question to me was "So! You're married to an American then?"

I thought "Ah ha. It begins already." then said, "No! Getting married to an American." She was writing something when I answered.

Kinda freaky, no? Maybe she assumed one as handsome as I couldn't be single!!!

Was the "scary Asian doctor" a female?

The female Asian doctor I had told me I had to quit smoking (OK, fair enough) but when I asked afterward if I was going to live (jokingly) she said, "Well, we're all dying".

Ah the humanity!!!

Anyway, vis-a-visa the external genitalia examinations, she said "can you just prove you're a man". So I farted and scratched myself thinking that would be enough proof, but she still wanted to have a look at the goods.

I had my medical on Monday too. Kelly, I saw you there, I only knew who it was afterward - you were advising that poor woman who had been waiting two years about VisaJourney so I thought I'd check online to see who else was there. I was the really handsome Irishman ... lol.

We sent Packet 3 back on the 16th, still no packet 4 ... now I'm getting worried!!!

Mercedes is going to Law School in Oregon. When we met that as her plan and, while I am a homebird, I have my education and chosen career and I want her to fulfill her potential too.

After she's done we'll look at the situation again as 3 years is a long time. Actually, it's not ...

I hope you are all well and congrats to all marriages and visa issuants.

The UK laws are that if the prop[erty was your primary residence then you don't have to pay income tax on any net gains made on it.

Thanks for the tips on this guys. The US tax laws are mind boggling for someone used to the UK PAYE tax system. I think we will send $9,999 dollars right now and then transfer the rest over when I get a US bank account.

Thanks Muffin,

So are we best to wait until I open the account myself so that Mercedes isn't taxed. Her account is open in her and her step dad's name (so he could be a co-signee while she was in Ireland)?

United KingdomBringing money to the USA
Hi All,

So I sold my house in Northern Ireland and am transfering the money to the USA.

I think I'll use Interchnage who have the best rate today.

Does anyone know the tax implcations of bring money to the USA? Obviously I can't get a bank account in the USA until I get there but Mercedes has one so we can put the money straight in there.

Will there be negative tax implcations in doing this as we aren't married yet or should we wait until I get to the USA and open an account and then transfer the monies that way?

Either way, are there tax implications on this money to the US Govt?

I flew Virgin to JFK from london but it was Aer Lingus that charged me 170GBP for extra allowance from Belfast to london.

And then Continental charged $100 for extra from newark. Oh well!!!

Thanks to all and hello from sunny Eugene, Oregon.

The jet lag sucks and Mercedes and the mutt got delayed coming into JFK but otherwise we are alive, well and happy. I feel really at home here and it's so exciting to have our whole future in front of us. We opened our bank account today (the bank official's wife is foreign too so he knew the visa issues), DMV tomorrow (in Oregon your partner can vouch for you at the DMV so no proof of address needed) and have been busy applying for jobs all day. Oh, and we went clothes shopping.

Sincere thanks to everyone I've met on here who offered advice, encouragement and good vides. Tis done. Until AOS when I'll be looking advice again no doubt!!! Good luck to you all who are on their way soon - it's a big thing, it really is!!!

Sorry this is so short and scatty but I'm knackered!!!

R

PS. I sold my house, my car, gave up a great job and fitted what remained of my 36 years on this earth into 4 suitcases. And I would do it all again tomorrow.

No but my tie-dye business is getting so big I expect it to be bought over by the Feds soon. By the way, i went to the doctor and got my vaccination history. But I had to get a Tetanus shot, even though I had one in April. Says it was supposed to be a course rather than a one off and I'd get rejected for not having it, even though it has no medical benefit. It was only $10 but go figure ...

Oh, hang on ...

This from VisaJourney ...

If the beneficiary's vaccinations were COMPLETED as part of the visa process, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO INCLUDE FORM I-693 IN THE AOS SUBMISSION. All your medical information is enclosed in the brown envelope which was handed in at the POE. The envelope is then forwarded on to USCIS where it will be consolidated with the I-485 submission, once received. If you received a copy of the Vaccination Documentation Worksheet (Form DS-3025) from your Panel Physician, you may include a copy of that form in your AOS submission in place of Form I-693.

I have a copy of the Vaccination Documentation Worksheet (Form DS-3025) from our friendly doc, so I may include a copy of that form in my AOS submission in place of Form I-693 and save $80?

I must see if I can get Mercedes a cheer leader outfit ... lol ... she'd love that!!!

I got a doctors appointment tomorrow all the way up in Salem for, wait for it, $80 cash ... just to sign a form. Geez!!! I knew I should have studied medicine.

I'm glad I kept the x-ray as they said I had to get a TB shot!!!

So, all I have is a photocopy the doctor gave me in Knightsbridge but I'm guessing that that will suffice!!!

Let's hope this doctor is a bit nicer than our friendly lady doctor in London.
