Naraj,

I am dying to know how your fiancee's interview went!!! I hope it went well!!!!! good.gif good.gif good.gif

Thanks, but no such luck. Because Kenya suddenly declared Thursday (her original interview date) a holiday, they told her to come back today for her interview, BUT when she went back today, instead of interviewing her, they just rescheduled her interview until Monday. Oh well. I've waited this long, so I guess 2 more days won't kill me...

Oh, so lame... dry.gif Kenya probably wanted to stretch the holiday out whistling.gif

Good luck on Monday!!! You're so close! good.gif

How much did the medical exam and vaccinations COST?

Everything was paid in shillings, and I can't remember exactly, but in US dollars, the exam was around $105, and it was around $100 more, in all, for the 3 vaccinations she received. On the phone, they said it would be about $245 for the 6 or so vaccinations she needed, on top of the exam fee, but I guess there was some miscommunication, because it turned out that she didn't need but 3 shots.

By the way, I figured the vaccinations would probably be more expensive in Nairobi anyway, so I disobeyed the embassy website's advice and had her receive every recommended vaccine that was available in her country before leaving for Nairobi.

Glad to hear that things are coming together and you will be reunited pretty soon. And I can not believe you have not received the NOA2 yet! WOW!!!! But it sounds like you are handling things VERY well.

As for our kwangula, I paid: 10 cows, 10 goats, and 10 chickens. We also had some other things to buy like a suit and dress for her aunt and uncle. We paid for the transport of the family committee from Gulu and Attiak to Kampala. Then we had the traditional sugar, kerosene, matches, tobaccoo.

The best part was the fines we had to pay. It was quite the experience and had both sides of the negotiation comittees laughing. We had to pay a fine because my best man (my best friend that I grew-up with and have known for 25 years) left his shoes on when walking into her families house. We had to pay because we sat int he empty chairs her family had set out. We should have sat on the floor. We also paid a fine to have the ceremony in English.

We also had to bribe her uncles and brothers to bring my wife from where ever she was hidden in the house. First they brought out three younger girls and asked if she was amongst them. We said no, they responded that was all the daughters they had. So we paid a little money and then three more mature women came out. They asked which one of these daughters we came for and we responded she was not amongst those women. They again said that was all the daughters they had in the house and why can we not find the daughter we came for.... don't we know her. So we paid a little more money and then she came out all happy. The actual negotiations lasted for about an hour.

We had about 200 people there total for the dance and dinner after words. So it was really the first time I got to meet ALL her family and the tribal elders. Luckily I had 12 friends plus my mom, sister, neice, and aunt fly from the US over there with my wife and I for the wedding, kwangula and all the other stuff we planned like the safari and fishing on Lake Victoria. We did the kwangula at the start of our trip. We had our church wedding the week after and the regular reception after that at Serena Munyonyo.

Now you know basically everything we did for our wedding. It was a blast from when we landed to when we had to leave. All my friends and family said it was a trip of a lifetime. So that made me feel a lot better after asking them to spend so much money to go.

Take care and thanks again for starting the thread.

laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif Reading your description of the kwangula had me smiling! Ah yes....I have been to a few kwangula's of friends and one negotiation meeting, and it was a blast--it really is a communal event. We want to have some sort of ceremony in his village in Masindi (he's originally from Arua, but his family moved south looking for work)--but I'm not sure if it will be super traditional as my family wouldn't really know what to do with all those cows and chickens whistling.gif We might just have a huge feast for everyone with dancing and music. We still have some time to figure it out!

Take care, and thanks for stopping by. I'll keep you updated as things progress good.gif

Hello All,
I can not offer any advice about going through the Nairobi consulate, but I can offer support. My now wife is orginally from Uganda, but we met while she was living in London so we went through the London embassy. I just wanted to make sure to join the new and wonderful East Africa thread. We are in the process of removing conditions on my wife's 2 year permenant residency card. We also had our religious and traditional tribal wedding in Kampala last June.

On a side note..... I am sorry we lost touch Madwoman. But I am not very good at navigating Visa Journeys messaging system. I had responded to your email and not heard back from you. So I am sure I had messed it up in some way and not sent it correctly. But thank you for starting this thread.

I wish everyone the best in their Visa Journey and can unequivocally say it is ALL worth it in the end.

Welcome NimoMN! I'm sorry we lost touch too--actually that was my fault for not responding to your message sooner. I just read it again and you predicted that I would receive our NOA2 in August/September... crying.gif Oh well! I'm hoping for some good news this month!

How are you and your SO doing? My latest news is that I have recently left my counseling job to focus on my work with the non-profit that helped me go to Uganda. I am also preparing to present on our work at an upcoming art therapy conference. December 18th I'm returning back to Uganda and I'll be there until Hiller gets his visa. Then we'll come back together!

Truth be told, I couldn't handle the demanding work of an outreach counselor and manage my own psyche during our long distance relationship. The phone is ok, but often it is hard to hear and we get cut off. Oh and when it starts raining on those corrugated roofs...don't get me started girlwerewolf2xn.gif

I know that not everyone has the opportunity to take off across the ocean so I feel really grateful for that. When I get back, the agency I worked for offered to hire me back, or I might got more into the non-profit direction. We'll see about the funding! innocent.gif

I had a question about your recent Kwangula--how many cows did you give her? jest.gif jest.gif jest.gif I asked that of every boda boda driver who asked for my hand in marriage laughing.gif I asked Hiller too, and he thought I was serious until I assured him I was not whistling.gif

No problem. Stop worrying, I don't think you'll be waiting more than a week or two for the Nairobi Embassy, they're quick. I met my fiancee on the web, but I caught her before she got too westernized, thank goodness.

You have to take the documents with you to the interview, you don't mail them in to Nairobi. You just have to make sure you take the medical forms that are in the packet to the panel physician to fill out (during your exam appointment). There wasn't anything else in the packet that you shouldn't already have prepared. I read the forums here and prepared all of the documents my attorney recommended, and went overkill on it, so I couldn't imagine them possibly asking for anything else. The embassy document recommendations are pretty pitiful in comparison, so as long as you're thorough, there shouldn't be any surprises. She's taking about 5 pounds of documentation with her, so it might take a while to list it all out here, but if you have any specific questions, please ask.

All of my info is absolutely correct and extremely up-to-date as far as I know, so you can trust it. Let me know if you need anything else smile.gif

From Naraj's post, it appears that the only thing in the "packet" are the forms for the Medical Exam. Everything else you can find the forms for off of the internet. Is this right? Then instead of mailing it back, you just show up with all the forms on your interview day. It also appears that you can schedule an interview date and medical exam BEFORE you get the packet, and arrange to pick up the packet, go to the medical and then the interview, all in one visit.
This would be FANTASTIC, since many of our SO's are not from Kenya and it is a big pain to travel back and forth to Nairobi.

I have heard that the main problems with the Nairobi Embassy are:
1) Problems with receiving the packet, causing delays
2) Problems with doctors (they say they accept appointments over the phone and then make you wait when you arrive)

According to Naraj's experience, it appears the best thing to do is to pick up the packet yourself from the Embassy and make sure you choose your doctor wisely (Naraj had good results with Dr Asuga)

Sorry if I am taking words out of your mouth Naraj, just trying to break it down for others star_smile.gif

This is very helpful information, since I think I would have wasted time waiting around for the packet instead of calling the Embassy and picking it up ourself.

Welcome everyone to the East African thread!!! I am so glad--I have communicated with many of you through messages, and then I thought--why not share this information? good.gif good.gif good.gif

Ok, so I am starting a Nairobi Embassy thread, since there doesn't seem to be one yet, and there is minimal info about the embassy itself (VJ doesn't even include it in the list of consulates, so it's not searchable in the database...)

Here is the info so far (anyone with additional info, please update!)

Nairobi Embassy info here: http://www.visajourn.....airobi, Kenya

Let's use this thread as a place to share stories and information! good.gif good.gif good.gif

My fiance is from Uganda and will be going to Nairobi for his medical and interview. So far, we are still waiting for our NOA2...
What about you? Where is your fiance/e from and how did you meet him or her?

What's up Madwoman,

I tried to create a timeline, but there was no option to choose the Nairobi embassy, or my fiancee's country, so I gave up. Here's a short summary, though:

May 22nd: I-129 Received by Vermont Service Center.
September 10th?: 2nd NOA received by me.
September 21st?: Case forwarded to Nairobi.
September 27th?: Nairobi embassy received paperwork.
September 29th?: Embassy packet mailed by Nairobi embassy.
October 21st: Got tired of waiting for lost packet, made doctor and embassy interview appointments.
October 24th: Sent fiancee to Kenya to pick up packet in person.
October 28th: Fiancee picked up embassy packet in Nairobi.
October 30th: Medical exam.
November 5th: Vaccinations and medical results scheduled to be received by fiancee.
November 6th: Embassy interview appointment.
November 7th: Date visa would be picked up.

If you notice, the last 3 things on my list are in future tense, so wish us luck!

Looks like you're running about 6 weeks behind us, Madwoman, so I'd guess your fiance's interview will be around mid-December. Probably earlier, if you don't have any hang-ups, and you don't wait around for the embassy packet to show up in the mail (because it probably never will). Good luck!

Thanks so much! Wow--it looks like you speeded through the process! This brings me so much hope, you don't even know! I have seen some people wait MONTHS to get an interview...so your advice about not waiting around for the packet is a good one. I haven't seen anyone from Burundi here on VJ before, how did you two meet?

One more quick question--Have you sent documents to the Embassy yet or will you bring them to the interview? I was surprised that you were able to make an interview date before sending the packet back. I have heard that the documents the Embassy requires are sometimes confusing--what documents exactly have they told you they require?

I feel like I just bombarded you with questions! blush.gif Sorry...you can tell I am getting excited to move forward with the process and i want to be prepared as possible. I also haven't been able to contact anyone who is NOT from Kenya but has experience with the Nairobi Consulate. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your help! good.gif good.gif good.gif

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Embassy Thread!
Hi everyone! Naraj has kindly permitted me to post a recent e-mail from him about his Nairobi experience. Thanks Naraj! I has similar frustrations as you with my timeline, but I just put Tanzania as the consulate (since I figured it was the closest...).
Is your fiance from Burundi? I just checked and they do have that as an option for the beneficiaries country. But still no Nairobi Consulate mad.gif
Anyway, I think people want you to update your timeline because it will then show up when you get approved--and people love to see approvals, and get a sense of the process you went through. It also contributes to the stats that VJ uses to calculate estimated processing times good.gif

I always check out this link to check on the latest K-1 approvals (all based on VJ timelines of course): HERE IT IS

Naraj's post to follow....

Many thanks to Naraj....
Here is his e-mail concerning the Nairobi Embassy:

1. We prepared EVERYTHING in advance, but the embassy packet got lost in the mail, so since I was so sure we had everything we needed, I sent my fiancee to Kenya to pick up the packet in person. No appointment needed to pick up the packet, she just showed them the second NOA letter to get through security.

2. I had already set up her doctor appointment for the day after that with Dr. Asuga. She's the only female doctor, so I'm not sure if she would be the best choice for your fiance. She was very trouble-free, though. Only needed a few days' notice for the appointment (booked it by phone), and she was pretty lenient on the exam. 1 visit for the exam, and 1 visit for the vaccinations and results.

3. They advise 7 - 10 days to get the results, but it's really about 4 (because of the blood work). She goes back tomorrow for the vaccinations. I'm not sure how she will receive the results yet, but Dr. Asuga's secretary told me they were fine, by phone, yesterday.

4. Pretty easy. Just call the main #, I think it's 254-20-363-6000, press 0 for the operator, and ask for someone in the visa department. You might have to call back and have the operator try 2 or 3 different extensions before they answer, but I've never not been able to contact them. Don't call the visa department directly. They NEVER answer that #. Just call the embassy before 4:10pm or so (they close at 4:30pm).

5. Piece of cake so far, as long as your documents are in order. The embassy makes appointments for interviews by phone, as long as you tell them your documents are ready, and you tell them you already have a doctor's appointment. You can get an interview within around a week of calling for the appointment. They also said that if she passes her interview, since she's from another country, they will try to cut down the approximate 2 day waiting period (for the mandatory security check) to come back and pick up the visa, down to 1 day, if possible. They don't mail visas, because the mail service in Africa sucks, so you have to come back to pick it up.

That's everything important that I can think of, but if you have any other questions, let me know. Oh, the hotels in central Nairobi are only $5 - $10 per day, so even if he has to stay in Nairobi for 2 weeks, like my fiancee, he won't have to pay too much for a hotel. Wish me luck, her interview is this Thursday, so hopefully I won't be eating my words. We'll see...

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionTraveling while waiting?

You say you have a letter saying his visa is extended a year, I assume you mean is green card? If so, he can travel with that. It's true that sometimes it can be more of a hassle (ie if you get a CBP agent unfamiliar with it) but while it may take longer to go through immigration, he will be let in.

Thank you for your help :) And yes, I meant green card...oops :innocent:

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionTraveling while waiting?
Hello everyone,

So I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question... But my husband and I filed his ROC in May of this year and we are still waiting. He was planning to go back to Uganda in January to finish up some family business, however, we are afraid he won't be let back into the US without his updated visa in hand. We have the letter saying his visa has been extended for a year...but we don't think that will hold up in immigration. Has anyone had to travel while waiting on their ROC? Any problems? Is there something we can do to ensure my husband can make it back to the US, or do we pretty much have to cancel all trips until he gets his conditions removed?

THANKS!

PS...oops sorry, I notices it is the wrong forum, I will repost there

I understand that you didn't trust Idi Amin, but you can trust the U.S. government that when they extend his Green Card for another year and give it to him in writing, like they do it to a few hundred thousand people ever year, that this is not a hoax.

Haha! Ok, point taken. I suppose I had doubts, because we have gotten some trouble from immigration officers who don't seem to know what they are doing. But I guess you can always ask to speak to a supervisor. Thanks everyone for your reassurance :)

We have an extension letter, and I have read here that it shouldn't be a problem, but I don't trust it. We thought we would have his renewed visa by now, but looks like the VSC is extra SLOW. Has anyone had problems coming back to the US with an expired visa and extension letter? Should I be worried, or should we go ahead and buy the ticket?

Thanks so much for any advice/feedback! :)

I came on here, then gave in and checked USCIS. WE'RE APPROVED!!!! We were approved yesterday (10/28). I immediately called Spurs, who I think is fairly certain that this process is driving me nuts. I think he's right! whistling.gif

Now here's hoping that the rest of you get good news soon, our files actually make it to NVC and make it out again quickly, and we all have speedy and fruitful interviews at our respective embassies!!!

Congratulations!!!!!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Just wanted to let everyone know Radz and I were married yesterday Evening at 4 pm. Best wishes to everyone here and thanks for all the support. Steve

Congratulations Radz and Steve and all the others who have gotten approved/married, etc! To those still waiting: when it is all over, the wait will seem but a small dream, trust me!

Sorry I have been AWOL for a while...I have been in Uganda with my fiance for the past two months and was able to attend his interview in Nairobi on Jan 7th (lasted 1 min and was super easy!). After waiting an additional 3 hours we left the embassy--visa in hand! kicking.gif kicking.gif

Last week we flew from Entebbe to Boston and now we are in Georgia visiting my parents. Sometimes I look at my fiance and can't believe he is finally here--it is absolute heaven star_smile.gif star_smile.gif star_smile.gif star_smile.gif innocent.gif innocent.gif Now everything seems extremely easy and what seemed impossible is almost forgotten. I admit the waiting was torture--but none of that matters when you are finally together-- and it will happen!

We get married in Boston March 28th and are preparing for the big day, and I am doing my best to introduce Hiller to the United States. After a week here, he is doing really well--just being flexible and taking it all in. Basically he said that everything looks bigger, newer and brighter.
Tomorrow we are going to take him to visit the beach and see the ocean for the first time. Should be fun smile.gif

Anyway, I will keep trying to check in. Thanks everyone for your support! I wish all of you the best of luck!!

Guys!!!!!

We just got an email from our congressman telling us we got approved today, January 8!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot tell you how happy we are. Sitting here crying and drinking champagne. There is still no end on the road but we probably made the hardest part!!!

I love you guys and thanks to everyone who prayed and supported us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Panterchen!!! SUch good news I am so happy for you! We have our own good news.... we had our interview in Nairobi on Jan 7th and were APPROVED!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif Besides waiting 4 and a half hours, and another 4 hours to get the visa the SAME DAY, the interview was so easy--lasted about one minute and all my fiance had to do was raise his right hand and swear he was telling the truth and tell the officer when he first met me. I was actually shocked at how easy it was. I was also able to walk right up with him to the counter for the interview. And they issued us his visa that same day!

So now, we are done with the stressing (well, when the wedding gets closer, I'll probably feel anxious!) and we're relaxing in Uganda until feb 20 when we fly back.

Thank you everyone for the support and I wish everyone else a speedy visa!!!! good.gif

Hey everyone! Sorry I have been MIA--I'm in Uganda now and have limited access to the internet. Just wanted to give everyone a quick update! Hille and I travelled to Kenya for the Medical Exam and found out yesterday he passed! We were able to move up his interview date from the 12th to the 7th, so we'll head back to Kenya next week (a 13 hour bus ride!) complete his vaccinations and hopefully have some good news when we come back!

Hope everyone has a wonderful New Years!!!! I am so sorry to hear that there are still some people waiting. Probably everyone is on vacation over at USCIS. Let's hope that the New Year brings some very good news! good.gif

Has anyone gotten an interview assignment lately? First, the consulate in Bangkok lost most of our Packet 3 (I discovered after an email inquiry that suggested we didn't send the info -- WRONG). Now we re-sent and they don't respond to an emailed inquiry asking whether it arrived.

I have heard that the Nairobi Kenya Embassy is notorious for losing Packets so I called up the Embassy and told them my fiance would pick up the packet in person before the medical. They let me schedule an interview appointment over the phone for the date of my choosing: Jan 12th!
I'm not sure how far away you are from the Embassy (My fiance lives 20 hours away in another country!) But I would see if you could arrange to be in Bangkok for about 10-12 days--schedule the medical and interview within a week of each other and arrange to pick up the packet when you first arrive. The Nairobi Embassy said that all we needed was a copy of our NOA2 to pick up our packet. Hope this helps.....

Just a quick update: I was able to call the Nairobi Embassy just now and make our interview appointment for January 12th! The reason for this date is that I will be there with him, so we can travel to Nairobi together smile.gif The lady at the Embassy was SO NICE, and let me pick out the date to have the interview. All I did was tell them that all our documents were ready and we already had a medical exam appointment (kinda fibbed on that one since the doctor wouldn't let us make an appt that far in advance--I have to call back the middle of Dec. It's not a lie if you know it will happen in the future right? whistling.gif)

I discovered that it really pays to be proactive! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif
Leaving December 18th!!! SO EXCITED!!!! good.gif

Good luck everyone with your journey and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!! (to the USC's)

Just a quick note: We called today (1st level staff) and nothing new. Our case is still pending. People, I am fu*** scared.

Panterchen, I would try talking to someone on the second level! The first level staff are just reading from the same computer system that is not updating properly. When I called about mine, the first level staff kept on repeating "still pending", but when I reached a supervisor, he told me I had been approved 5 days before! In fact, when I told one worker that I wanted to talk to a supervisor, since I knew the computer was having problems, she told me "Oh, that's where I am getting my information, let me escalate your call." She was one of the rare nice ones! star_smile.gif

Good luck!! You will get your approval soon! good.gif

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Consulate?
QUOTE (soon~tobe @ Nov 4 2008, 12:05 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
since we are talking Nairobi embassy does anyone know if Ugandans have to travel to Kenya for the medical exam? I know they used to but there is now a civil doctor in Uganda (he does the medical exams for adoption visas). So I am wondering if they can be done in Uganda....any one have a clue about this?

No clue...that would be nice, since going to Nairobi TWICE is such a hassle! mad.gif mad.gif

BTW...I started a Nairobi Consulate thread, so let's all move over there!
Here it is: http://www.visajourn...howtopic=160251

It is nice to see the several people going through the Kenyan Embassy. :-) I kept wondering why it wasn't on the list also.

Yes, actually now that I think about it, is there a Kenyan Embassy thread? If not, we should start one! AND I am asking everyone who has gone through the Nairobi Embassy to please write a review and update info on the Embassy page. There is hardy anything there! It's like people get so excited after they get their visa, they forgot to drop some crumbs for those poor ones coming after them unsure.gif
Guess I don't blame them though whistling.gif

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Consulate?
When I first filled in my timeline, I noticed that there was no option for selecting "Nairobi, Kenya" as the consulate--it simply didn't exist! But Kenya is listed as a possible beneficiary's country--just not as a consulate blink.gif This has always confused me--and it's a bit frustrating because it makes it so difficult to search for other people who have gone through Nairobi. I put "Tanzania" as my fiance's consulate, since I figured it was the closest country! Other's have put Rwanda, or even...Armenia? huh.gif

What is also confusing--Nairobi IS listed under consulates that you can review.

blink.gif huh.gif wacko.gif

Anyone know how we can fix this? Who can I e-mail to get Nairobi on the "list"?

thanks!

Africa: Sub-SaharanWe are almost ready to schedule interview in Nairobi
QUOTE (Jamie&Harry @ Nov 6 2009, 08:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
we are at that step he received his packet 3 and his police certificates and is ready with all other documents. I mailed out the stuff i needed to send plus the 1_134 and allll sorts of documents. anyways once he receives my package we will be ready to schedul his medical exam and his interview. I was already in contact with the consulate by email and they said they can coordinate the interview through email just to let them know after we schedule the medical. Im so nervous as he is not from that country and not sure what to do /expect of that area but at least the consulate will work with us which is very very nice of them Anyways so many worries right now and im nervous about the interview. When he was here he didnt meet my parents as they are in another state and not very supporting of my decision they dont know him and they think i flipped my lid. Anyways I guess im wondering what types of questions they ask i know i have read people say to practice some interview questions but i worry it will sound canned and not natural not sure how natural u sound nervous anyways

I know im rambling but some things im wondering about how easy is it to navigate there as he will need to find a place to stay and find the medical place and the consulate lol and i just think wow hes doing all this to be with me smile.gif Going through all of this and giving up so much to be withme I dont know anyone who would go through so much and so much expense he amazes me every day

and tips, helps and reassurance?

Hi Jamie& Harry! Congratulations on being so close to the interview and approval. Soontobe is right-- Nairobi is one of the nicest, easiest consulates to go through (if you don't mind waiting!)

Please browse through the nairobi consulate thread found here: http://www.visajourn...howtopic=160251

Go to the 7th page and you will find my experience of going with my fiance to his interview: what buses we took, where we stayed, how much it cost, etc. There is also information about the medical in the earlier pages but the doctors may have changed sine I was there. Browse the Nairobi thread, there is plenty of great information there! Good luck!
