United KingdomGetting Email Packet 3

I'd read my guide (see link in my sig - lots of changes in the responses so check out the whole thread) if you have not already.

It may be too soon for you to get you LND, since you only just got approved - they have to process your papers in the other department, which doesn't necessarily happen immediately. But if you want to try, DCF people can also try calling DoS and enquiring.

United KingdomGetting Email Packet 3
Hi Everyone,

Just to say this website is so useful, I don't know how we would have filed (DCF, London) without the handy forums and user guides! I am the petitioner (USC), and have lived as a permanent resident with my husband (UKC) just north of London since we married in 2005, now in the process of moving back to my home state of California.

We just received our NOA2 in the post today, with an an approval date of 12 December - faster than I expected!

What I am wondering is how long can I wait before calling to try and get out LND number? From what I understand, this is all we need to book the medical, and we could begin filling out the other online forms ASAP.

It would just be great of we could get the medical scheduled, and I don't want to be waiting for delayed post over the Christmas period if we could make the medical appointment for January, now.

Any advice on how long you should wait before calling to get your LND number?

Thanks very much in advance!

United KingdomBest way to shift my stuff

depends on the dimensions of the box you can ship vs dimension of the suitcase I suppose, and the dimensions of the items you are trying to ship. £46 a box is ridiculously cheap compared to any other shipping company I have found, which was about the same cost or more expensive as a suitcase. But I'll definitely look in to that website as well.

Isnt £120 a bag very expensive when you can ship the same weight  for £46 a box in 2 days?

United KingdomBest way to shift my stuff

I don't know exactly how much in the way of belongings I'll be taking but it won't be a huge amount. No very large items, furniture, very little in the way of housewares. Mainly books, clothes, misc small things, personal electronics, art supplies. I plan to take as much as I can as baggage but I won't get everything in. I thought about posting my stuff to myself but it seems to be very expensive. Any other ideas?

I am in the same boat, have just started looking in to this. I was surprised that some airlines will allow you to take extra bags - up to 10 each, on Virgin Atlantic for example. http://www.virgin-at...al-baggage.html

At a cost of £120 per bag for up to 23kg, this might work well for us, as we have about 40 million suitcases between the two of us. I didnt think it was a horrible price. Also we will probably fly direct from London - San Francisco, so no need to worry about connecting flights.

I will let you know if I come across any other options.

United KingdomFiling late taxes at the embassy in London - Do you need a cover letter?

I don't think you need to explain. Late penalties and interest on the amount you owe only apply if you actually owe them money. In that case you can plead for unusual circumstances that delayed you like a tsunami or war. But since you owe zero I don't think it really matters how late you are...if that makes sense. Kind of a non-issue since you owe zero. You could always write something to include if you wish to tell them why you are filing multiple years, but normally tax returns don't have a cover letter so probably not an absolute requirement.

Thanks Nich-Nick - I really did not want to ask you again, as you have already been so helpful!  Having done a lot of research online, it would seem there are only templates for people who owe penalties. I think I am going to prepare one anyways, and if they don't want it tomorrow, I'll just take it with me then!

Thanks again.

United KingdomFiling late taxes at the embassy in London - Do you need a cover letter?

Hi All,

I am hoping to go to the Embassy tomorrow in London to file taxes for the past 8 years. I called them last week to double check that I could still file taxes there, which they confirmed, and they also confirmed that if I brought extra copies of my paperwork, they will stamp these copies to submit alongside my I-864 (AOS) for my spouse's IR-1 application.

I was just wondering if anyone had done this before, and if the IRS like to have a cover letter stating why I didn't file taxes earlier? (basically I didn't know I need to file taxes if I wasn't living in the U.S., I don't owe any money, anyways)

I was planning to call them today to check whether I should do this, but realised they are already closed for calls. Just wanted to see what others had done.

Thanks!

United KingdomUS Tax specialists in London/South East? (Preparing I684)

Just wanted to follow up and say that I filed 8 years of taxes yesterday at the Embassy in London, and it was not as difficult as I thought it would be.

Also, as mentioned in this thread, the IRS office was extremely helpful, I brought copies of each year's paperwork with me, which they stamped as received, so I could include this with my husband's AOS for the IR-1 visa. I went at 12pm on a Wednesday to the walk -in service and after scaling the fortress of the embassy and walking by about 15 people with machine guns (I am really going to have to get used to seeing more guns if I am moving back to the states, it totally freaks me out now) , I walked straight into the IRS section, waited about 5 minutes, and left my paperwork with them. I didn't actually owe any tax, and the guy at the help desk said I didn't actually have to filed for all previous years, but I wanted to have it all down and recorded before I move back.

Extremely grateful to the knowledgeable people on this board, who helped me put off something I'd been procrastinating on for years!  Now I don't have to worry about filing until 2014! dancin5hr.gif

If anyone else is in a similar situation, I am happy to answer questions and pay forward all of the help I've received here.

United KingdomUS Tax specialists in London/South East? (Preparing I684)

Hi Maven,

Thank you so much for your reply, the information you have provided has been really helpful, especially this information about taking the returns to the counter at the IRS office. I never even considered doing this, and I work in Central London, so this would be perfect. I'll definitely be looking into it.

So grateful for this website and all the lovely, helpful members!

Durrr, I meant 1040, not 1040EZ. You'll need to also file a Form 2555EZ, which is for your for excluding your foreign income, along with your 1040.

I just checked, and the IRS office in London is still open! If you can make a visit there, they will take your returns over the counter and stamp them for you to use with your I-864 at the interview. It's just as good as sending them off to be filed, and certainly quicker. They do walk-in assistance Tuesday-Thursday. I visited them when I was doing this, and they were very helpful. More info here: http://www.irs.gov/u...Internationally

It really isn't that hard, it's just boring and irritating. Feel free to ask me more questions. smile.png Or do an advanced search for the term "IRS" under my username.

United KingdomUS Tax specialists in London/South East? (Preparing I684)
Hi All,

I hope this is the right section to post this. I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations for US tax preparers in London? I have not filed filed since moving to the UK in 2006, now that I have petitioned for my UK spouse to move to the US, I need to file back taxes ASAP!

Does anyone have any experience with this? Am wondering if it's even worth paying someone. I'd be filing married but not jointly, as my husband has no SSN and has never lived in the US. I've not earned more than £35k in one year, which I believe is under the threshold, and I have no properties, savings accounts etc..... I think I'd essentially be paying someone to fill in 0's on a form. That said, I need proof that I will have filed all back taxes for my I-864 I'll need to complete in support of my husbands visa application. I thought perhaps by paying someone to prepare my taxes for me, I could get proof that I have filed, quicker? Wishful thinking?

Any comments/advice appreciated. And yes, I am now aware that it would have been much easier if I'd have just filed every year since moving...sigh..the things they don't tell you when you move away at 22. Lesson learned.

Thanks again.

United KingdomForms of Readiness, Contacting the London embassy woes

How can i check when my medical results have been sent or received? Ceac?

I am applying for an IR-1 visa, as I'm already married, so I am not sure if it is the same for a fiance visa. It must reference it in one of the pinned guides. But here is the link to the CEAC page: https://ceac.state.g...er/Status.aspx?

Also, it doesn't actually say they've received the medical, just that there was action on our case that day, and it was 4 days after the medical, so I assume thats what the action was.

United KingdomForms of Readiness, Contacting the London embassy woes

1. I indicated my medical to be on the 3rd of February, I attended the medical on the 24th January.

I have sent an email two weeks ago stating this to be changed. I have not heard back from them. I sent another email last Friday and still nothing.

I tried the operator assisted information number and it returned an invalid message.

The number I tried was 09042 450 100.

I am also wairy that I can no longer use DoS if the embassy post fails to get to me which is a distinct possibility given the track record they have. So i am understandably worried, given i have no contact number for the embassy and they ignore my emails for over two weeks.

2. I indicated my fiances name on the form of readiness. I hope this doesnt mean they are expecting her for definate. It really depends on when the interview date is as to whether she can. I also did not put anything in the expected travel date box as theres no point till i know the interview date. If she can't come along is it necessary for them to know she isnt coming?

I am also worried me not putting a date will affect how fast they process it. I saw on the embassy blog site they send instant confirmation the form has been received. I have received nothing since packet three.

3. I met with an immigration advisor regarding my options given I have a criminal record  charges back in early 2009, I wont go into that here. My previous immigration lawyer i was helped by for the B2 visa was a million times more helpful. This recent advisor hasnt got back to me since the meeting and hasnt provided the letter he said he would produce. Kind of worrying given how much it cost. Puts me off using them at all, but my first immigration lawyer my auntie hired for me was alot more interested and involved, so i may resort to him if thats an option given denial.

All the guy told me was i can request a review or there is a waiver but didnt seem to give me any hope i had a shot with one of those, so essentially its either denial and succesful review or approval else im screwed. yey.

Having lost my mum two months ago who i usually talk to when im worried and missing my fiance with no set date to next see her i feel pretty low so im venting to the only people who understand the heartache of the visa process. I wish it didnt have to be so unnecessarily slow and they would apply more resources to it. That being said I appreciate CR1 takes alot longer and I may have years to wait in AP or reviews which I despair at the thought of.

4. The panel physician asked me how much i drunk at uni and im also scared there going to throw that at me.

5. I understand that if i get denied i will also loose my 10 year travel visa to the states which will damage my future opportunities with my SO. not to mention i cant travel during AP and my fiances emplyer is incredibly rubbish at keeping holidays available much past two or three weeks so booking a holiday is a hige risk with them.

Its destroying my sleep stressing myself out like this.

Hi vvvVein,

I totally understand what a stressful time this is. I remember doing this process with my now husband almost 9 years ago when I was in California and he was here in the UK, and we were trying to move the the UK, and it really does suck.

Now we are looking to move back to the states, and my husband has just had his medical on the 20th January. He too submitted the forms and readiness notification before his medical, but we don't expect to hear for a few more weeks yet, as they won't process anything until they have the medical results. Our CEAC tracker was updated on the 23rd, the day the medical results were sent to the embassy.

I notice on the embassy website today that they are processing Notification of Readiness Forms up until the 28th January. http://london.usemba...atus_check.html

So, if you check your tracker, and your medical results have been received before then, there is a chance you might hear about your appointment soon. As we are expecting interviews roughly around the same time, I can certainly keep you updated if we hear anything.

I know this time really sucks, but once you are through it, it will all be worth it.

Not exactly what your asking but my interview is 21st Feb, my medical was 13th Jan, apparently 'packet 4' was sent out on 23rd Jan, it arrived 28th Jan

That's exactly what I wanted to know - just trying to gauge when our interview might be. Medical was on 20th Jan (all other forms submitted on 10 Jan). Last date change on CEAC tracker was on the 23rd, which is when they would have received the medical results. Just wondering if it changes again before they send out packet 4?

Good to know you actually received your packet 4! We haven't had any problems receiving letters so far, so hopefully all will be ok.

Me too! See you there, hope it goes well for you.

For those of you who have interviews on the 10th, can I just ask when your medical was? Awaiting my interview date (well, my spouse's) and it would just be useful to know how soon after your medical you received your interview.

Thanks.

United KingdomAny cheap ways around contacting the London Embassy

As I recall, Queen submitted a request through the online form to have her fiancé added to the list as attending the interview. That's one of the choices. They confirmed via that email address that he could attend and as a side note mentioned the date. They don't routinely give out dates if that is the only reason you contact them.

If you call that contact number in the link, you will get the non-immigrant people (student and tourist visas) and they might give you all kinds of wrong information...like "I can scheduled your interview" because that is the process for those temp visitor visas not involving the immigrant visa unit.

My husband used the embassy contact form this afternoon, and AMAZINGLY, they responded 2 HOURS LATER. We do have an interview scheduled, for 20 Feb at 8am!!!!

Doesnt someone else on here have an interview that day?

United KingdomAny cheap ways around contacting the London Embassy

I requested on my readiness form that London e-mail me back with an interview date. They e-mailed me back with my interview date from that e-mail address at least a week before my letter came in the post.

Just to update, I tried that email address and the auto-reply was this:

> Subject: AUTOMATED RESPONSE from the Immigrant Visa Unit, U.S. Embassy, London

> Date: Wed, 5 Feb 2014 13:27:28 +0000

> AUTOMATED RESPONSE from the Immigrant Visa Unit, U.S. Embassy, London:

I doubt they will respond, but fingers crossed! I wish I would have through to ask for email confirmation like you did.

Thanks - thats the plan!  I will make some coffee and hit the 10-midnight shift! :-)  Fingers crossed!

Thanks so much,

I am DCF filing in London (not sure if that makes a difference), and we emailed the embassy via their contact us form. We got a response within 2 hours yesterday, which I am amazed by! We had an interview scheduled, so I guess it was easy for them to look this us up. Said our letter was mailed on the 3rd, haven't received anything yet, but maybe tomorrow.

United KingdomWhat airline do you guys fly with?

I've never thought of using any of these other airlines! I usually stick to the ones I see on the price comparison websites and then I head to their main website :P
But wow, checked out Icelandair, one way to Las Vegas for £570? Awesome!  Do you need certain documents to stop at Iceland, like a type of visa or anything? Might consider this!

Iceland is considered part of Europe, so nope, nothing special needed!

Having flown back to the states about 13 times in the past 8 years, I really avoid flying the major US carriers as I don't think they are that great. I was loyal to Virgin Atlantic for a bit, as I flew them for work for awhile and built up air miles, and generally their planes are nice in economy, but once I used up my air miles I just started flying with whoever. I have found air New Zealand do great deals, and their planes are really nice. I'm picky about my entertainment system on a 10 hour flight - I want to pick from a wide selection of movies! And although I've only flown Icelandair from London to Iceland and back, I was impressed with their service. I see that you have to pay for food on their flights, but that's not the worst thing! I also saw online that you can have 2 bags in economy from Iceland to the US. So if we bring a second bag from London to Iceland we'd only have to pay 35 euros, as it would be free on the Iceland - US leg. Still need to look into that a bit more, but that's a great deal if I've read correctly. Right now you can stay over in Iceland for free as well, for one or more nights.

I've noticed Air Canada also has good deals from time to time. Although, last time my husband booked a flight on Air Canada, all the flights ended up being operated by United! We had a really ####### trip on United when we first immigrated to the UK. Vowed never to fly them again. In the end, my husband said it was a lot better than 8 years ago, and he had almost all of the economy section to himself!

I certainly recommend exploring all the other options, I have found some great airlines in the past.

SnorbsFemaleUnited Kingdom2014-02-06 17:25:00
United KingdomWhat airline do you guys fly with?

I once flew London- Reykjavik- Minneapolis with Icelandair, like you say it was definitely no frills but also cheaper than the alternatives. Will look out for the one way flight option with them as the rivals are not cheap at all!

We are also looking at Icelandair - London - Reykjavik - Seattle - Sacramento. £472, cheaper than anything else I've seen, and I want an excuse to stop over in Iceland as I went two years ago and fell in love. A trip to the blue lagoon is well deserved after this bloody visa waiting game. The planes are also quite nice. They gave us Icelandic Christmas drinks and biscuits last time we flew, that was kind of cool!

Also if people are flying West Coast, maybe check out Air New Zealand? I fly them to LA and connect to Sacramento, they had one way flights for March at about £480. Their planes are really nice with almost brand new entertainment systems (can watch films before take off, order drinks from a touch screen, even in economy)
I haven't had a bad flight with them yet, their daily flight just gets in too late for me to connect to Sacramento, taking into consideration it may take longer to go through customs on our first POE. Want to leave plenty of time when we arrive before needing to connect to another flight.

United KingdomPatiently awaiting interview date. Who else here is waiting?
We were at the embassy today too after waiting 3 hours (immigrant visas take a heck of a lot longer!) we were approved, yay! Leaving the UK in 29 days, I think my British husband is more excited than me! :)

United KingdomInterview date - Anyone received theirs recently?

Aww im happy for you glad you got yours. Did the ceac status update for you?

I have had no such luck myself they seem to take about 4 weeks to reply to my emails.

The CEAC did not update, it still says 23 Jan, even though they apparently issued the letter on the 3rd Feb. I don't know if that's because our whole application never went though the US? Really just speculating...who knows.

I am still in shock we heard back 2 hours later. I don't even know how that happened, and I almost still don't believe the email my husband forwarded me from them. I used the form one other time, and they replied in 5 days. Again, I have no idea if it is because our case may be more straight forward, as we are getting an IR-1 visa, as we've been married for 8 years, lived in the UK for 8 years....again, I could just be making stuff up. Who knows.

I really feel bad that other people haven't been responded to...there is someone else here who is waiting for packet 3 and has not hear for about 4 weeks...I really don't understand how it works.

You could try tweeting them if you haven't already? Not sure if it makes any different....just a thought.

Thanks. I guess I can take comfort in the fact that at least I am waiting with my spouse in the same country, as opposed to 8 years ago when we were apart, but the fact that we are giving up our jobs and starting completely over from scratch in the U.S. is very daunting - although hopefully, the right choice. I just can't believe that after we get the visa, this is really just the start!  At least 8 years ago we were young and too naive to realise what the work it takes to start a life with someone....now I just feel old and tired! Months of paperwork and job hunting ahead... :/

Ok, rant over now! :)

United KingdomInterview date - Anyone received theirs recently?

Literally just checked.

My medical was on the 15th, had some complications, Embassy received my results on the 27th, Interview Scheduled 28th of Feb at 8am. If you follow the embassy on twitter, they seem to say when they are processing times. Almost like they do them in batches every couple of weeks. I must have been on the last ones before they restarted :)

Srvman - Did you get your letter already, if your results were received on the 27th? Or did you call to find out? Eek...getting a bit worried as our results were received on the 23rd...I think I need to take a chill pill...

SnorbsFemaleUnited Kingdom2014-02-04 17:51:00
United KingdomInterview date - Anyone received theirs recently?

Yes, it updated the 16th when the medical was received and then again on the 23rd. I called DoS that day and got his interview date.

Hmm, very interesting. Annoying, as it would appear we don't have an interview scheduled yet. Am a bit confused as the current twitter update reads: IV & K visa applicants. We are processing Notice of Applicants Readiness forms emailed to the Immigrant Visa Unit on or before February 1

Our readiness form and DS-260 was submitted on the 10th, ahead of the medical on the 20th. I have been trying to just be patient and not call or email, but if they have processed readiness forms up to the 1st Feb, perhaps I should call and see if there is a problem with ours?

Any thoughts, anyone?

SnorbsFemaleUnited Kingdom2014-02-04 17:28:00
United KingdomInterview date - Anyone received theirs recently?

My fiancé did his DS-160 and submitted the readiness form on 02/01, had his medical 13/01 with results logged 16/01. He was issued his interview date on 23/01 and interviews on 20/02 @ 10am. Some are waiting longer than this to receive theirs.

Can I just ask- was your CEAC updated when your interview was issued? So far, ours has updated once since the medical, 4 days after, which I assume was the embassy receiving the results. That was on 23rd Jan, and it hasn't updated again. Should we expect it to update again before we receive our interview letter?

Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)They say my medic exam is incomplete

I been in AP for 4 months almost. My husband contacted senator's office and their office told him that the embassy said the case is incomplete because I have not turned in medical exam when I actually did.

When I went for the the medical exam the doctor's office said they will send over report to the embassy and the consulate officer at my interview said the reports had reached the embassy. why now they say they don't have medical reports. What is the actual problem. How do I fix this.

Someone from Afghanistan Portal, help me please

USCIS Service CentersIs there a new NBC office at overland park, KS?

I called NSC and they keep telling me there is no NBC at overland park, KS. I talked to two people and I get the same answer. Can somebody find out if this statement is true?
