CanadaMTL (and others) Waiting for an interview date
QUOTE (Pandora01 @ Aug 18 2008, 06:19 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Speaking of medicals, I'm going for mine today. A medical is much less stressful than the upcoming interview but yet, I'm nervous. Geez, in what state am I going to be for my interview! laughing.gif

Don't worry you'll be fine - Mary was nervous before she went it but it went really smoothly.

I'm reminded of the medical I went through when I applied for my naturalization - it was more of a formality than a real serious medical. Mostly taking history, some blood, x-ray etc. Unless you have something really bad I doubt it will be an issue. I think that they are looking for any conditions which are serious enough to either be infectious or eventually a drain on medicare. Although I cant imagine why since we pay of all our own health insurance.

This waiting for a interview date is driving us crazy! According to all the other time lines posted here - it should he here this week. Fingers crossed!!!

I noticed the same thing. But there's at least another one coming up too. Mailed in my forms and checklist this week, on the 6, and they received it on the 7. Maybe we'll have our interview on the same day, who knows!

Let me know if you get a date before I do.

You had your medical in Toronto on the 11th?! - We were there too! Small world...!

CanadaMTL (and others) Waiting for an interview date
We mailed our Packet 3 back on the 23rd of July. No response yet. Embassy said they signed for it on the 24th.

So, Amy and Pandora - I'll post here once we get our date. Mary emailed them a few days ago to see if a date has been set or a letter mailed since her building sometimes loses mail, but there has been no response yet.

Based on the time lines we aren't expecting packet 4 till around the 23rd of this month and the interview date end of September.

How can I update the spreadsheet?

VENT: Montreal Consulate: What the hell is going on over there? Appointment letters are going missing. People are missing their appointments. Some people get email notices 3 days before their interviews, and have to scramble to get to Montreal. Those of you who went through them last year says that they were fine - what the heck happened?? There's a bunch of us here now wondering if our letters may have been lost. There's no interviews scheduled yet for September, at least among VJers. What gives??????

Two different things. Employers first have to show that they can't find a US citizen or PR to do the work before they're allowed to sponsor someone. Imagine if fiancés/fiancées had to do that? Plus, those are non-immigrant visas. Meaning the employees cannot adjust status and remain in the US or apply for citizenship. Seriously, WaitForever. You need to find something to do to expel all that frustration.

No duh. This is the vent forum after all. I'm just saying that Canadians get special treatment on employment visas but not on other kinds. Why not?

Why is it OK for US companies to hire Canadians and have them move to the US RIGHT AWAY on a TN visa, and the same privileges aren't extended to Canadian fiances? Canadians are good enough as employees, but God forbid you want to marry one. Then you have to wait in line with everyone else. Are Canadians decent workers but nothing else???????? Too bad the F in NAFTA doesn't mean FIANCE. wink.gif

How do you pass the time. All of this waiting is driving us crazy. Try to focus on work but having trouble doing it. Thank god there is a weekend coming up. But they don't get mail up in Canada on the weekend so if its not in the mail today, its not until Tuesday. Mary suggested that she sit downstairs and wait for the mailman each day. Our lives feel like we are frozen solid, and only this letter can thaw us out. Its hard to think and plan, since we have no idea within a few possible dates, when things can move forward. Mary's son is already going to miss at least the first month of school. I feel like a cog in a machine, a pawn in some game, waiting for some God-like figure to put us into play. Until then, our lives are on hold. Out of our control.

We seem to have enough people processing work visas, investor visas, outstanding persons visas, military visas, refugee visas, pushing for amnesty legislation etc. Did you know that there are only 32,000 K1 visas issued a year, in comparison to the 12 million illegals in this country right now? If you think about it, how long does it take to process 32,000 visas? Most take about 15 minutes. 15 minutes times 32000 = 8000 hours. There are 2000 hours in a typical work year. 4 people working full time could process all the K1 visas assuming that there was no backlog. How many hundreds of people work for the USCIS? You would think that even if they had 50 people working on this full time, the backlog could be cleared in a month. Why not? Bureaucracy.

Although I agree with what you wrote, I just wanted to point out that just because 32,000 K1 Visas are issued per year, that doesn't mean there aren't thousands more that need to be reviewed and sorted beforehand. There are many people who get denied a visa to the United States and those cases, even though the visa didn't get issued, still took time and manpower.

I'm not suggesting that USCIS should take as long as they do. I'm sure they could cut their time frame by at least half if they just acted efficiently and removed some of the aforementioned bureaucracy. Unfortunately, that probably won't happen.

There is also a lot more Visa categories than the K-1....and some of them might be harder to process depending on the immigrants situation, family, etc...

Ya I know - I'm just saying why not have people dedicated to K1s and K3s? I mean its one of the few visas where an American citizen is personally inconvenienced by the wait.

This process has taught me that bureaucrats do not care about the people whose lives they affect in any way shape or form. Its taught me that these people enjoy playing with other peoples lives. Its taught me to revile government officials even more than I used to. Its taught me that no matter how you try to speed things up, someone or something will always get in your way and mess up your plans. Its taught me that the US is perfectly happy with bringing Canadians to work for businesses in the US, but for some reason, treats Canadian fiances of American citizens worse than it treats illegal aliens. Its taught me that crime is rewarded (illegal aliens can come across the borders and be with their families immediately) while following the rules is punished (we have to wait up to a year to be with our families). There's more, but I'm too angry and frustrated to think straight.

I agree with you but I honestly think the system is backlogged, not enough people working for USCIS and too many frauds forcing us -honest couples- to just sit and wait.
Don't get me started about illegals! It drives me up the wall! About a year and half, the US politicians were in talk to legalize illegals. Why would we give a free pass to people who willingly didn't respect this country??
I understand that all illegals are not the same but I have been abiding by USCIS and US laws for the last 6 years so why someone should have it easy?

By the way, I do not understand this whole reference dealio. What do potential employers expect to find out this way? Nobody in their right mind would not chose a person to be their reference unless they were willing to say glorious things.
It seems a waste of time and networking effort.

Agreed. I think they used that as an excuse. I think of all the jobs I ever had they might have checked references on me once. You dont need them - a better job will come along.

I wish it was that way with all state jobs. I have a state job, family dental, and I still have to pay for fillings. Copay is like $50. All my old fillings are beginning to need replacing...now there's some good news. NOT. The only way we can afford to have good quality dentistry is for both of us to have family dental plans...and our daughter will be going into braces soon.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress Reportsmurphys law...canada post has lost our packet 3 ... best course of action????
mary has been here for almost 3weeks and its been an awesome trip. as i predicted earlier packet 3 showed up at her address in canada on july 2 ( a week into her trip) so we had the bright idea of asking the friend of hers that was checking the mail, to forward the packet 3 to my US address via Xpresspost Canada Post 9 not courier ... PREMIUM service ...cough cough ...they guarantee delivery within 5 business days, it was mailed on july 2nd and as of tomorrow, it will be 1 week overdue and probably lost, canada post has already stated that a refund of postage is in the mail ARGHHH...this is what we get for speeding things up mary is going back wednesday morning, so if it doesnt show up tomorrow, whe will miss it, it it ever does show up.

we were thinking about requesting a new copy of Packet 3 through the Montreal consulate

question A

should we call/email give them the whole story about having it forwarded to the US...do you think the would have issues with the fact that these were "official documents" that were "forwarded"?

question B

should we call/email them to send us a new set because we have not received the first set?

question C

OR should we wait another week to see if canada post EVER gets it to me so i can send it back to her ARGHHHHHHHH

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Been away from the group for a while. While I don't begrudge all of your happinesses, its depressing for us to read sometimes.

It's been great that most people who filed in January are getting their interviews, but there are still a few of us stragglers who were fated with the slowest center and now the slowest consulate. To make matters worse, they sped up like crazy through the summer, sending interview letters out in 20-35 days. We are at 60+ days and counting. They seem to have ground to a complete halt. Actually, there are a number of us waiting at Montreal for all kinds of interviews, and they are trickling out extremely slowly, if at all. Some people are getting letters now for IR/CR-1 interviews LATE October. It's almost like they have decided to stop doing K1 interviews as of August 2008. There have been none in September, and considering its already middle of September, and none of us have seen any appointment letters for October yet, we are wondering if they have decided to close down the processing of K1s through Montreal or something, kind of like what they did with TSC etc. So we are incredibly frustrated and have no idea what is going on over there.

So to those of you who said that the NOA2 approval was the longest stretch, and after the NOA2 things would be really fast, you were lucky enough to not have to go through the Montreal consulate. For us it was 130 days from NOA1 to NOA2, and as of today we are at 102 days from NOA2, and I doubt that we will have an interview within the next 30 days. So for us, our second half may turn out to be longer than our first half.

Sorry to vent but its depressing. I saw that there are others out there as well in the same boat.

you guys were lucky that you are going through Vancouver. Seems like at every turn we get the short end of the stick: We had to go through CSC, then Canada Post lost our Packet 3, and now this. Feels like every time we try to expedite things or even ask whats going out we get slammed down. We are both feeling so beat up and exhausted by this process. Do you think that's part of the plan - to try and test us to see if the relationship is strong enough - or maybe just petty power tripping? I'm thinking its the latter. sad.gif

Have you looked at some of the other Montreal timelines? They do take longer than Vancouver but I didn't think they were that far out. I would take a look at timelines in the Canada forum. I hope its not that long for you two.

Yeah - that's the thing. All of the recent MTL time lines for K1 are about the same : about a 30-40 days after you send in Packet 3, you get Packet 4. The interview is on average 30-40 days after that. We were looking at maybe end of September interview. Which is not great, since we'd have liked Marys son to start in school this Sept - so he would start in October a bit late but at least he'd be able to do his Grade 10 in the US. It was doable. If what these guys are saying is true - we have to wait until the END OF FEB 2009!!. Needless to say we both feel like we've been punched in the stomach! We mailed our Packet 3 back on Jul23rd and they received and signed for it. We sent an email on Aug 11th asking about the status on the interview and got no response. Based on what other people have said on VJ it was ok to send emails - so we sent another email yesterday asking if maybe they sent packet 4 or not and if we had an interview date. Based on everyone else it looks like they usually book the interview two months out and send appointment letters one month out. Se we were expecting a letter this month with an interview next month. This is their full response in its entirety:

You are on the waiting list for at least 6 months to book you a date

Mary is freaking out - she is beside herself! I am so totally angry. I'm not sure if this is a stock answer or we really pissed someone off and they put us at the back of the line. I can't imagine waiting another 6 months when people who filed after us are getting their interviews and moving. This is totally insane. We feel so powerless. Have no idea what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Carl

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
We got our Packet 3 on Jul 2nd while Mary was here visiting me. We had someone send it here but Canada Post only just delivered it to me on Saturday a full 15 days after they promised that they were going to deliver it. Of course by then she had gone back. As soon as she got back she emailed the consulate and told them it was lost and they sent her a new one. The new one arrived on 7/23 and we turned it around next day, 7/24 got sent via Priority Courier to Montreal and they got it on 7/25 and it was signed. Now the wait begins for Packet 4. On average its around 30-40 days to packet 4 and another 30-40 days till the interview after that.

So our own stupidity pushed it out 2-4 weeks. If we had sent it back when it showed up then we might have an interview end of Aug - now it will probably be end of September - of course since we had no idea when it was coming - how do you decide on travel and stuff when everything is so up in the air.

We are shooting to marry mid November in Vegas - 3 years to the day we met over the net. I can feel it getting closer - pretty exciting! Depending on what a jerk my ex will be my kids may not be able to come to Vegas for the ceremony so we may have to get married here first. I don't care. I'll marry her a hundred times over. We are planning ceremonies here, in Vegas, Canada, Greece and Japan. Since i used up all my vacation time this year traveling back to see her during the "restriction" period, we probably won't be heading to Hawaii on honeymoon till next year..sad.gif

Everything just seems to take forever. People see you and they say - aren't you guys married yet - or why don't you just go get married and move. No one understands all the suffering we have to go through.....

Is there any way to track it? If not I would request another packet then which ever shows up first you can use but you have both ends covered. Good luck smile.gif

Yes there is tracking but its really terrible. This is what it says:

2008/07/15 00:15 International shipment has arrived in the destination country
2008/07/04 03:11 International shipment has arrived in the destination country
2008/07/03 01:47 International item has left Canada
2008/07/02 16:06 OAKVILLE, ON Item accepted at the Post Office

Notice the huge gap? My guess its that it was sitting on someones desk until they realized - oh ####### this needs to be in California. So I don't know if its going to show or not. Of course, the other question is what do we tell the embassy - that we were stupid and please send us a new one? Do you think they would take pity on us? We'd even pay for a courier to have it sent. Or just play dumb and say we never got it? Course then they might say - what another few weeks and see if it shows sad.gif

Hi folks...sorry for being away for a while but Mary was in town dancin5hr.gif and we were just a little too busy wink.gif to post. Hope everyone is doing well! I just dropped her off at the airport this morning crying.gif

Of course, we did something stupid. Not sure if you saw my earlier post but as I suspected, packet 3 showed up in Canada while Mary was here. So trying to speed things up we had the friend of her that was checking her mail forward the packet here. Of course, due to Murphy's Law and customs and Canada Post and our incredibly bad luck (I'm not sure why we even keep trying to speed any of this process up!) the packet has not shown up here yet! Its about a week overdue as of today. Of course, Mary has gone back now so we've lost that whole week of time and now if it shows I will have to courier it back to her DOH!. My question is - do you think we should call the embassy and have them send us a new one, or do you think its would still be faster to just wait for this one and send it back again? Her friend xpressosted it to us on Jul 3rd. They said 5 business days its now been 8 days.

I know - most of you probably read that other post and said "OMG, I can't believe they did that" - so yes I know we were idiots for trying to be together sooner I guess. sad.gif So what do the wise sages of VJ think?

Thanks...Carl

You could always include a cover letter just stating that she is visiting in the US. When you go to the interview and show proof of continuing relationship you'll have all the travel papers so if they question it...it's really just more of the proof they're looking for. smile.gif (logically at least...and we all know how well logic fits into USCIS's plans.)

rofl.gif you used USCIS and logic in the same sentence! Good idea. Thanks!

#######. Mary will be here tomorrow and packet 3 has not shown up there yet. Shes going to be here for 3 weeks so if it shows up while she is here - which is highly likely - we are going to have someone courier it to us here - complete it - ship it back - and have them courier it to Montreal. Timing seems to always suck! If we don't do that it will add at 0-3 weeks to the timeline. We are rushing to try and get her and her son down here before school starts in Sept but thats unlikely based on the timelines.

why do you need to ship it back AND have them courier it to Montreal? Can't you just send it back to the embassy, directly from the USA to Montreal?

I thought that too - you don't think it would matter to them if it originated from the US?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsInterview process questions...
One thing I forgot to add (won't let me edit twice for some reason...)

How long will the whole process take? Do you have to wait around until you get some confirmation or anything (thinking about how you had to come back from the medical appointment to pick up your results hours later).

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsInterview process questions...
Well, my interview for my K-1 visa is coming up and I'm very nervous, as I'm sure many are! For those who have passed the interview, I have some questions about the entire interview process...

-What is the overall atmosphere like? Will it be more of an interogation like a US officer at the border questioning why you are entering the country (some can be pretty mean and pushy :/), or are they quite casual, in the sense that they are friendly and easy-going as they ask you your questions?

-Are they strict about the planned wedding day? When I submitted my packet 3 I wrote down a date I plan to get married on, but as people know it always has a possibility of being pushed back because no one knows how the visa will turn out. My fiance and will bring in a reciept for our wedding/hotel booking with us, so hopefully it will be good to show that it is at least planned.

-Speaking of wedding dates, do you think they will be weary at all of us planning on having a tiny wedding? I'm sure people have small ones all the time, but you never know.

-Should I wear formal clothes? I'm assuming so, because I think of "interview" as something you do to impress a possible new employer.

-Anything other hints/tips I should know about (either than relax/stay calm)?

I can get pretty nervous in these situations, and hope I don't panic and start studdering or anything (I mean, this IS the thing that will make or break the visa!) So any help is appreciated with answering some of my concerns.

CanadaDr. Howard Seiden Medical review
QUOTE (ChasingAmy @ Aug 11 2008, 11:16 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Here's my review of the medical.

So I woke up extremely early and headed in for my medical making sure I have everything with me that I needed. I got there at 6:55 and was the first person there. I parked infront of the place on the street and paid the parking meter. No one else got there till 7pm and then they started coming in faster. Thankfully because I was first I didn't have to wait for the doctor and nurses to be done with other patients and I got helped right away by each of them. Thankfully the entire medical was done in that one building. Didn't have to worry about finding different parking elsewhere for other parts of the medical.

They took my passport, passport photos, money, and immunization records. I was told to sit in the waiting room which took about 5 minutes of waiting till the x-ray nurse came and got me. Snapped a few radiation pictures of me and then off to the room down the really narrow hallway for my physical. Gave them my medical history and they checked my height, weight, and blood pressure in that room. Then off to the next room down the hall for them to steal my blood. Almost painless...I didn't pass out this time thankfully. Then that's it...they handed me back my stuff and I headed out. I was out of there by about 8:50. So in total the whole event only took just under 2 hours. Felt like 30 min though.

I'd recommend if you can use this place instead of any others then do so. Seamless, flawless, and speedy. Wish the rest of the process would be like this.

Hi Roger:

We saw you there. Remember the tall bald guy, the shorter Japanese girl and the tall teenager who came in after you, and sat across from you? That was us! Too bad we didn't get a chance to talk! Mary had an easy experience too. Maybe I can get her account and post it here as well. It didn't take long but we were bummed that the St. Lawrence market was closed cuase we really wanted some back bacon sandwiches for breakfast... wink.gif

Canadapacket 3 from montreal...?
QUOTE (Len_and_Bren @ Aug 18 2008, 08:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi Kate --- you can contact Montreal if you'd like. Believe me, phoning and emailing them became my fave past-time!
Here's hoping for a speedy process!

They didn't get pissed off with you and slow down the process? sad.gif We sent our packet 3 in on July 22nd and are going nuts waiting for the letter. ITeachKids84 got their Packet 4 in 20 days after mailing, 3 weeks minus a day. Which is today. We already emailed them last Monday and haven't heard a thing. How often did you email? I hear that they don't accept calls anymore is that true?

CanadaCanadian Bank Accounts
Welcome to Canada. A lack of abundant competition allows them to do this. Plus I would not be surprised if they all get together and agree to fees ahead of time. Just wait till you have to get cell service - another area where Canadians pay a ton more than Americans. Pick up a recent issue of Macleans where they compare US and Canadian prices on goods and come to the conclusion that doing business is Canada just costs more due to government intervention, forced bilingual packaging, more regulation etc. etc.
