Canadawhere did you first meet? online vs in person
we met in person. a group of us from a triathlon forum had met at a race a couple of years before and we keep in touch still. we try to get as many of us as possible together annualy at some race or another. one year, one of the fellows drove up to the race in Memphis from Louisiana with his friend -and i'm now married to that friend.

after that first meeting we kept in touch via email and phone. he decided to come out to watch me race in Wisconsin a couple of months later and I then returned the favour by going to watch him race in Hawaii. We've been together ever since and will be returning to race in Wisconsin this September - the spot where we had our 'first dates'.

CanadaYay! Shreddies!
nice! i have some on the way down.

I met one of the owners of my hubby's company (they are based in Markham, ON - i used to live in Brampton) and we got to chatting about things i miss. he told me to get a list together and he'll bring them when he's back in 2-3 weeks! and his assistant told me that if he forgets, she'll ship them down to me! (she really felt sorry for me living here in Podunkville! laughing.gif )

Congrats!!! kicking.gif

I passed my written just fine- I did study and read the book several times.

I was flabbergasted when she told me after the driving part (I had to do both) that I almost failed. I said "you're kidding right?" I have always prided myself on being a safe and courteous driver. She said "You drive way too fast" I said "but I was never over the speed limit" to which she replied "you don't have to be over the speed limit to driving to fast" #######?

I got my license but it still bothers me sometimes. I have seen the way people drive around here- they are fricking crazy!

ha! i could have failed the driving part too. i apparently rolled through every stop sign we came to (i drive standard). she didn't seem to care much though. i think it had something to do with the fact she was retiring in 2 weeks and we had a nice chat about the heifer at the SSA office. laughing.gif

fingers crossed i get a nice one when i go for my motorcycle license soon.

i never thought i'd get married and it was never important to me to have the fairytale wedding and all. (and i didn't)

but, if i lived near to my now husband, we'd still be married as he's an old fashioned southern boy. we just wouldn't have done it so soon i'm sure.

Thankfully I have a pretty good delivery system in place since my hubby's company is Canadian owned (just a coincidence, not how I ended up here) and the girl in the sales dept. hooks me up whenever they are heading down.

CanadaWhos going Home for Christmas?
not this year, we have apparently decided on an every other year thing and this is the other year. we may head to NOLA if the inlaws stay home and I can find hound sitters.

but, hoping to bring Moms down in January or February, depending on when my bestest friend will be in FLA as I'm going there to visit with her while she is a 8hr drive away as opposed to a 23hr drive away.

CanadaDr Seiden
if I remember correctly, if you got there early enough (I didn't), there is on street parking, but there is a green P very close as well as a private lot which is where I parked. I think I only paid $5 for the 2hrs or so I was there.

It's very easy to find, and if you should go past it, very easy to go 'round the block to get back.

CanadaBeer Thread
i am apparently a beer snob according to my friends. down here I usually stick with Stella, but also enjoy a Killian's red, a couple of the Sam Adam's aren't bad and the 'local' Abita brewery has some nice brews.

Unfortunately I'm in my '90 daypre-race window' so no beers for me until the afternoon of April 4th. Abita brewery is a sponsor so post-race beers are free!

CanadaHow did everyone meet their american/canadian significant others?
we met indirectly thru the internet. I had met a group of folks from all points of the US, including Alaska, that found each other on a triathlon forum. we were all getting ready for the inaugural Ironman Wisconsin back in 2002. a few of us really hit it off (the 'evil chatters' that have since been banned from that forum! LOL) and kept in touch after that and every year we pick a race and as many as possible go, with the race not being as important as the fun.

in 2004 we were heading to Memphis, and the gomer from Louisiana said he was going to bring a friend. ok, no worries, we are a fairly harmless bunch. Well hello! he was a hottie! Annie from GA almost fell over when she saw him during the race. After that we kept in touch via the phone and email and he came out to Wisconsin to watch me race there in September. While there he invited me to go to Hawaii to watch him race in the Xterra World Championships in October. Never one to pass up a good vacation, I went and we have been together ever since.

He actually proposed to me the night after a 1/2 Ironman that he came up to do with me the following summer.

So that is how this hockey loving, snow loving Canadian wound up with a super southern boy.

CanadaWhat am I forgetting?
My sister and bother in law are driving down next week for a visit kicking.gif (it was supposed to be a surprise but I blew it! LOL)

I've got the usual suspects on my list: Timmy's coffee for the hubby, Shreddies (square and diamond ones wink.gif ), Aero bars (for a friend), Smarties and Ketchup chips.

Anything else I should ask for - I'm having a brain fart.

btw, my grocery now carries Stoned Wheat Thin crackers. I find it quite funny that the box actually says "imported" on it.

Whats this all about. I'm interested to know!

I'm taking a course through Career Step. Basically you transcribe doctors dictation on operations, clinic visits etc. While there is quite a bit of medical lingo you need to learn, it doesn't take long to figure out new words based on basic root words. I'm at an advantage as having grown up in Brampton, the 'English as a 2nd language' folks sound perfectly normal to me. smile.gif Once I've graduated and am employed, I'll be working from home. Of course, it is performance based, so once you get the swing of things, there is pretty good money to be made.

before I moved to America, I worked with professional hockey players. Not much call for that down here in Louisiana so I am currently working PT reception etc. at my vet clinic where most of my sorry salary goes back to them for care and food for the hounds. CanadaUS Health Fare
I feel the same way. I go for my annual with my OB and that is it (out of pocket is usually $200 or so after bloodwork). I was supposed to get a mammo this year, but the $400 it was going to cost me went to a flight home to see my mom who was sick. The night she went to the ER I was mentally calculating how much it would probably cost for everything they did just that evening. Even with insurance, probably a couple of grand in co-pays and do not pays. My husband had a sinus infection last summer and our cost was almost $800 including the MRI to rule out a brain tumour. Of course, his daugher was planning a trip to Italy. :innocent:

CanadaWill I Ever Get A Break?
I feel your pain. I went to get the restriction removed from my SSN card and was told I have to go back to DHS because they left the the 'e' out of my first name (Kimberly vs Kimberley). #######?! Like I am going to drive 3 hrs one way because some fatfingered gov't employee can't type? I think not.

Thankfully the DMV didn't seem to mind so I'd got my license. Probably helped that the DMV lady had a run in with the sow at the SSN office too. LOL And since I don't plan on changing jobs that often, I have decided to keep my SSN the way it is and just give them my PR card too. Hasn't been trouble so far.

There are quite a number of us who didn't have an AOS interview and who have also received their 1- year green card without an interview. There is a thread in this forum for those approved for ROC without an interview and without an AOS interview. It may be a few months back but it will show you how many received both green cards without an interview. It doesn't seem to make you more likely to get a ROC interview if you didn't get an AOS interview.

yeah, this is what the lady that did my biometrics told me. it's basically a crapshoot if you get one at this stage or not even if you've not had one yet.

i'm crossing fingers for no as the office is almost 5hrs away.
