This thread is interesting I guess but i just did not like the idea of sharing opinion in other foreign language other than english and tagalog..
Knowing and not forgetting where we came from is a great thing, but being so proud that results to disrespect to other races or nationality is not right at all... People can tell where we came from, what races are we, we dont have to be real proud and disrespectful to other people and compare ourselves to them. Just the way we look, the way we carry ourselves, people knows we are from the Philippines

Cheers!

Welcome to the history class! Before English and Tagalog became the official languages for the Philippines, Spanish was the official language of the Philippines for 300 years. I had been providing, and will continue to provide English translations for anything posted here in Spanish.

--Bullwinkle

I will do the same for Tagalog. Tagalog is not universally spoken in the Philippines, even in Manila, or here on VJ.

I like history very much and I am thankful that I am able to contribute something as well. I have to admit it kind of ticks me off (sorry lol but I know everyone's entitled to their opinion so peace ) how they look at certain things, e.g. Rizal's books. It makes me wonder if they have read and understood between the lines what the National hero wrote. Anyways, just thinking out loud here.

Carry on and peace. innocent.gif kicking.gif

Ps. Please check this out:

I have yet to look a complete copy of RA 1425 (Rizal Law) but here's something to look at
Rizal Law

That is why I like Mi Ultimo Adios. I read it first in Fort Santiago at the Rizal Museum, trying to translate it myself from the original Spanish. (It reads beautifully.) There is a clarity of mind, and of purpose, when one knows death is near. Of course, I disregard his (no doubt forced) confession to the Spanish Imperialists, but I see no subtle messages in what he writes in his last uncoerced work.

Still, I may have to read his literature to truly understand the man, and the story he was trying to tell.

I just wonder the purpose of this thread lol (please do not take any offense), seeing how the discussion goes. Anyways, just thinking out loud here.

So what does it really mean to be a Filipino?

-peace

I originally started the thread when the Kano spouses were engaged in verbal combat with the rest of VJ, hoping mga Pinay would define themselves rather than be defined by everyone else, including the Kano spouses. I tried to keep the thread alive by posting some Filipino history, and in the process, spark some discussion. I am very happy the way things are going lately, so, keep going like you are. When the thread starts to die, I will bump it back to the top with some more history lessons.

I am learning much in the process, and I hope everyone else will as well.

Here's my contribution to the history class, courtesy of viloria.com

SYNOPSIS OF NOLI ME TANGERE

Crisostomo Ibarra is the heir of a wealthy clan. He returns to the Philippines after studying for seven years abroad. He hears news/gossip about the death of his father, Don Rafael Ibarra. Don Rafael was sent to prison in connection with the death of a tax collector. Since Don Rafael stopped receiving holy communion for a long time, he was refused a Catholic/Christian burial by Padre Dámaso, the parish priest of their town.

Crisostomo (let's just call him Ibarra from hereon) sees the lack of progress in his town and decides to build a school to teach and prepare his townspeople. Tandang Tacio (the old philosopher) notes that there have been many attempts to build a school in the past, but all these had failed. Padre Salvi opposes the plan because he is secretly worried that the school project will threaten the power he wields over their town.

Ibarra almost gets killed while he is laying the cornerstone of the school, but Elias saved him. Elias is the mysterious fellow who also saved Ibarra previously.

With so many powerful enemies, Ibarra eventually gets implicated in a staged revolution, and is hunted down by the guardia civil. Maria Clara, Ibarra's sweetheart, unwittingly adds to Ibarra's woes when she switches Ibarra's letter with another letter that reveals her true nature. (Maria Clara's biological father is Padre Dámaso).

The guardia civil catch up with Ibarra, and drizzle him and Elias with bullets near the lake. Ibarra survives and buries Elias in the forest owned by the clan of Ibarra. The guardia civil think Ibarra drowned and died in the lake and promptly leave the scene.

Maria Clara thinks Ibarra really died, gets depressed, and enters the nunnery. She does not follow the advice of Padre Dámaso to marry Linares.

Thanks Tess! I guess, in the days before TV, if you wanted drama, you had to make it yourself!

To all na sumagot:

Salamat ha! I appreciate your answers. Their marriage was doomed even before it started. Alam ko na action speaks louder than words pero sa mundo ngayon e kailangan diba smart ka din. Ewan ko sa kanya... she is helpless because she doesn't want to help herself. Tinanong ko nga siya bat siya nag asawa ng american kung di naman siya masyado marunong mag english.. so sabi niya love niya.. blah blah blah... so ako i suggested ok.. bili ka ng dictionary at mag aral ka. Pero di naman niya ginawa. She spent almost a year in Texas at ganon pa din ang english niya.

Before, nasa states na siya ako nasa Pinas pa she would talk to me online. Sometimes she speaks bisaya which i cant understand. She said they always argue because her husband is alcoholic. He drinks always after work. He talks to a different girl online, He talks to his ex-wife about her being so dumb and that she is just his servant...(they have a kid husband and ex-wife) She sent me the conversations. So ako e nagulat nalang.

US citizen so annulment nalang daw. Sabi ng asawa tutulungan daw siya sa annulment kung magpropromise siya na wala siyang makukuha na kahit ano. (thats what she told me last night)

I spoke with her husband before and told me how he couldn't stand her kasi nga she is not trying to communicate with him, always argue with him and accusing him a lot of things. Tapos pag nag eexplain daw siya e di naman naiintindihan so he just gave up.

I think they chatted for a year and he visited her in Mindanao... first visit and they got married right away. So, kasalanan nila pareho pero ang tanong ko lang kung pano sila makakapagdivorce? pwede ba yung sinabi ng asawa na "sige tutulungan kita pero walang kang makukuha na kahit ano sa akin" parang di tama lang.

Hindi pwedeng wala siyang makuhang "kahit ano" kapag na-grant and divorce nila. Yung kasamahan ko sa work siya ang nag-divorce sa Pinoy husband niya kasi nga pinakasalan lang siya para ma-petition niya mga magulang niya na nasa Pinas. Noong nakarating na sila dito, her husband started to act indifferent towards her which she hated. She doesn't hang out with losers like him daw. Kaya hayun nag-divorce sila and she got half of everything her husband owns. O di ba ang saya niya? She got half the value of the house, alimony which her ex cannot do everything but to give in kasi nga nakalagay sa batas nila.

Kawawa naman yung friend mo for having a husband which is a loser. Dapat hindi muna siya bumalik sa Pinas para dito na lang sila mag-divorce para naman makuha niya yung dapat sa kanya.

The husband needs to file a divorce here in the US , even if they were married in the Philippines so both of them can be free to remarry. Why even stop him from marrying another woman? He also deserve to be happy. Not so sound harsh but the husband maybe genuine and felt deceived when he found out another person was actually typing for your friend . LIfe can be frustrating when you dont understand each other .

Your friend should let her husband go and move on with her life.

Annulment takes forever in the Philippines, unless you got money to expedite the case. It is easier for ther husband to file a divorce. All your friend has to do is sign the divorce papers.

Hi, we got married in the Philippines too and 2 to 3 weeks after wedding day, we got our NSO authenticated marriage contract. What we did was, we ask the lady from the city hall( we had civil wedding ) to forward our papers and endorse it to NSO because that time too we were planning on filing a petition in USEM. It was fast. Had to pay, 1000 pesos for 2 copies of marriage contract from NSO. You should have a copy of your marriage contract from city hall too.

Hope you learned something from what I shared.

Also, about getting passport, they asked about the NSO copy of birth certificate/marriage contract.

Thank you for sharing this teena..me and hubby got married a few months ago in Cityhall Manila and found out that my marriage certificate is not in NSO yet!

These documents you mentioned, you need to bring them with you on the day of your AOS interview. When my husband and I opened a joint bank account in WaMu, they did ask me for my SSN. Yes, she needs SSN before you can open a joint bank account, before you put her name on the bills, include her in your insurance, etc.

After NOA1, the waiting game continues. My then fiance got the NOA2 four months after the NOA arrived in his mailbox. If you got a job, do not quit yet. Having a job keeps you preoccupied while waiting for your NOA2 because sometimes you get impatient and frustrated. Give yourself a month or two to complete all your documents for the K1 visa interview. I accomplished these documents within a month before my interview date. It would be to your advantage if you do something that will keep your mind from the NOA2. And then before you know it, you got the NOA2. And then you will be amazed how speedy the process was. Just my two cents.

US embassy: Smith has left RP

US Marine Lance Corporal Daniel Smith left has left the Philippines after the Court of Appeals acquitted him on Thursday of raping 'Nicole' in Subic in 2005, the US embassy said Friday.

In an April 24 statement, the US embassy said, "Following the decision of the Philippine Court of Appeals, Daniel Smith departed the Philippines under the authority of United States military officials."

"We have seen the decision of the Court of Appeals acquitting Daniel Smith and intend to respect that decision. Throughout this long and difficult case, Daniel Smith remained in custody of the US Embassy in the Philippines in compliance with the terms of the Visiting Forces Agreement, which provides the framework for U.S.-Philippine cooperation in legal cases involving visiting U.S. military personnel," the US embassy said.

"This has been a difficult and emotional case for all involved, especially their families and loved ones. We hope that the parties can now move on with their lives," the embassy added.

Meanwhile, militant groups held a rally at the Court of Appeals (CA) and the United States embassy in Manila on Friday assailing the acquittal of Smith in the Subic rape case.

Court of Appeals decision

In a 71-page decision written by CA Associate Justice Monina Arevalo Zenarosa, and concurred with by Special 11th Division chair Justice Remedios S. Fernando and Associate Justice Myrna Dimaranan-Vidal, the CA said the alleged rape was in fact a "spontaneous, unplanned romantic episode" between the two parties.

The CA said Smith should be released immediately unless he is being held for any other lawful cause.

"No evidence was presented to show force, threat and intimidation applied by the accused upon Nicole," read the ruling, referring to the alias of the victim.

"Wherefore, on reasonable ground, the accused Lance Corporal Daniel Smith is hereby acquitted of the crime of Rape as alleged in the information. He is ordered released immediately unless held for other lawful cause," the CA said.

The appellate court’s decision said it believes the two parties were "carried away" by their passions on the night of the incident, and that there was no forced sexual intercourse.

The court said there is also no evidence that the victim was threatened to have forced to have sex with Smith, saying her only defense was that she was intoxicated that night.

"This court finds it deceptively posturing Nicole's portrayal of herself as a demure provinciana lass... On hindsight, we see this protestation of decency as a protective shield against her own indecorous behavior," the decision said.

The court added that the degree of Nicole's supposed drunkennes was not clearly established, and that telling others of her resistance to Smith's actions is not enough to establish that she did not consent to the sexual intercourse.

'Unplanned romantic episode'

"Resistance by words of mouth does not suffice to establish that she indeed did not give her consent to the sexual intercourse," the court said.

"What we see was the unfolding of a spontaneous, unplanned romantic episode with both parties carried away by their passions and stirred up by the urgency of the moment caused probably by the alcoholic drinks they took," it added.

The decision stated that it was not influenced by the sworn statement released more than a month ago by the victim, which stated she doubts if she was really raped.

The court said it reviewed the evidence presented before the Makati Regional Trial Court, and decided that rape was not proven to be "beyond reasonable doubt."

"A careful and judicious perusal of the evidence on record does not convince the prudent mind about the moral certainty of the guilt of the accused, hence, we must acquit," the decision stated.

The court also attacked the victim's credibility, saying her statements had numerous inconsistencies.

The CA decision is final and executory and can no longer be appealed.

HI! Ako din late na-register ang birth certificate as in late. Nakalagay sa birth certificate ko 16 years old na ako na-register. Hindi naman ako hinanapan ng baptismal certificate. The consul did ask about the late registration. My answer was, "My parents got married when I was 16 years old and that was the time they decided to register all their children's birth certificate." Hindi na rin ako hinanapan ng mga secondary ID. Hindi naman ako nagkaproblema sa visa. Na-delay lang ng 8 days.

QUOTE (melissa/martin @ Apr 27 2009, 02:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
To all the Visajourney goers:

Thank you for all your replies to my questions.

Recently, I posted a topic "I have a job interview on Monday". Well I found out that it is a scam. When the receptionist called me, I didn't really hear the company name and didn't bother to ask because shes giving me a contact info as to where to go for my "interview" also she said she'll be sending me email to remind. So, i said to myself "ok i will know the name of the company when she sends the email"

I received an email Sunday night. The name of the company is VECTOR MARKETING (you can search it up in google and find many complains about them). They are associated with Cutco Cutlery company (i don't know if you have heard of it). They tell you there is no telemarketing, no cold calls and no experience required (they provide the training). So i went to their website and yes there is a training for 3 days.... but it is not paid!

They also make you buy a knives from them (you sell knives door to door) but they tell you it is a deposit. I think the knife is about $150 before you can start your job. They also have a mandatory meetings every weekend. All in all... they make you buy their knives and training is unpaid.

I think nowadays it is very hard to find a job but I am not giving up. I applied for different companies and have not received anything so far. Those who contacted me are either scam or very strong sales. I am wondering somehow if my experience in the Philippines is not helping at all?
I only worked for a year in Teletech as a technical support. You know how it works in a call center. You have a different supervisor every 2 weeks. I have encountered a lot of companies testing website who don't have an option for international location and numbers (can't proceed if you don't fill it up)

Now I feel like putting my experience in the Philippines will not help me at all. -sigh- I could use some advice. Thank you!

I was amused by the "knife" thing". I remember when I was fresh graduate from college and I was too excited to get a job. I found this ad in the Manila Bullettin offering office position, no training and you start right away. The hiring officer didn't even try to go over my resume. The guy asked me to buy an insurance policy from them if I have the money and then I can start working right away. Scammer. There are indeed scammers everywhere even as far as the Philippines.

It's back to the drawing board for you girl. Don't give up. Some companies are fictitious in Craigslist. You can apply directly to their websites. That's what I did. I did also walk around our neighborhood, even though we live in an unincorporated town, there are some businessess that need extra help. Who knows, maybe they are looking for one. I went applying for a job at all these shops and stores. If you live in the city, you will get more chances to find more employers that are hiring.

Hello to all people in VJ. I am married to American guy for 6 years now. I am going back to Philippines and live there maybe 4 to 5 years for some reason. My question is, does my marriage still valid even in that longer period of time of separation??

thank you

Yes. your marriage is still valid as long as you or your spouse didn't get a divorce or annulment decree. Your marriage will not expire even if you stay in the Philippine for 4 or 5 years.

Good Evening/Morning to all VJ Members,

We are a little bit confuse about the "packets" and we hope there is someone here that will please explain to us the contents of the "packets" and what are the typical questions asked on it? My husband and I are considering to provide additional evidence of on going relationship...Is this something we can send with the packets? Specifically we are interested in the question & answer portion of the packets if there is any.

We starts to prepare all documents that we need for the interview....Hope you guys could give us some infos regarding the mentioned above.

Thank you very much!

Hi,

Are you pertaining to the packet from USEM? if yes, then those are just simply instructions on what to do next. Like , you have to go to SLEC and have your medical done there, the requirements on having medical, instructions on how to get interview appointment etc.

I think they don't send packets anymore as you can already download it in their website. I'll send you the link on where to download it IF i can find it. But I hope that someone here can share the link to you. smile.gif

Ah,no more packets na pala? Just have to print the forms on line. Awesome.

Jack, (am i right?)

I'm just so bothered why do you keep annoying people here, especially the women? I know Anais did love you because she saw a nice person in you. And I do believe that you are nice too, coz on some thread here you answer or help them the best way you can.
I just dont get it! why do you do this stuff? do you really always want to play "THE VILLAIN"? just to kill time? just to make fun?well, if you are having fun treating us like this....we dont. We dont hate you, we hate the WAY you treat us.....
And YES, we admit that some of us bcme so rude to you and your wife, but who started it? BUT WE.....I mean "I" apologize for what I did!
Just an ANSWER for simple Question Mr. Jack.........Thank you

*** Im sorry guys, I know in some point I'll be hearing a "NOT SO GOOD" reply on this comment from Jack...and i expect that! and used to it!

Mag-emote ba dito sa VJ? Pwede mo din siya tawagin uncle Jack parang Uncle Sam laughing.gif . I'm alright, Jack! I cannot wait to read his reply Mariel laughing.gif
