I want to chime in with what S&D said, and thank Kim for her support from the bottom of my heart. I know thinking they will deny us is totally irrational, seen as we are both free to marry, free from any problems with the law, and our relationship is for real. However, as someone else pointed out in the past, the lack of any transparency in the process, being left totally in the dark as to what is happening, is utterly nerve-wracking... And also the notion of the wasted time, especially for those of us who are not spring chickens any longer.

Anyway, it seems the slow down was due to the HB1 petitions, as a thread in the K3 section illustrates. They have to clear those up by July 31, and then perhaps things will get back to normal - probably too late for us, but at least good news for those who filed after us.

Even though I'm still waiting, I've started to give away things as well. I have far too much stuff anyway, and I know I can make someone else happy by giving them things that have been languishing in cupboards or drawers for heaven knows how long wink.gif . There are two colleagues of mine at work who like making jewellery, and I gave them some old necklaces and earrings of mine to recycle. I've also been giving away books, magazines and clothes.

If that approval came soon, I'd be able to get those certificates I need for the interview, in spite of the dreaded month of August coming soon (when things come to a standstill in Italy). I haven't had them done before because they are only valid for a limited amount of time, and I don't want to have them expire before the interview. I've just seen that we are 33 on Igor's list now.. Who knows when we'll get approved! Hopefully soon, though I'm almost resigned to waiting much longer than normal. I just wish I knew what the problem was...

Sometimes I wish my mom was still here in order to meet Michael.. I know he wishes he'd been able to meet her. In some odd way, they are very similar, at least in an aspect which I consider to be very important - their curiosity and openness about life in general. And I know they would've been able to communicate very well, even without speaking each other's language - my mom could communicate with a stone biggrin.gif! I just wish my brother was more like her, and less under his wife's thumb... But, as we all know, though we can choose our friends or partners, we don't get to choose our family. Michael knows that all too well.... His father deserted his mother when he was 5, and she seriously ill, and his mother in turn failed him badly last year, when he would've needed her support. This is why it is so important for us to be together.

Congratulations to everyone!!!!

Don't want to sound self-defeating, but I hope you can understand my frustration. I have always tried to be hopeful, but some days it is not easy at all. Anyway, I don't want to bore any of you, especially those who are celebrating their NOA2s... I'd like to think ours is on its way, and I really hope it is. It's not that I am afraid we won't be approved - rather that we'll be stuck in limbo for heaven knows how long. The Naples Consulate is not noted for its celerity, which means it could be another three-month wait for the interview.

Though I realise my case is a bit odd, I am not worried about the actual wedding at all. You see, there won't be anyone else but Michael and I there, and possibly a couple of guys from his workplace if we need witnesses. I am estranged from my closest family (my brother), my only other living relatives are too elderly to travel to the US, and I have no friends who would come there. We'll go to the courthouse, and that will be it... I don't really care, because I've never been one for big weddings, and I thought I'd never get married anyway. However, I really wish all your weddings will be wonderful, and that you will be surrounded by all the people who love you.

I have no reasons to think our petition will fail. Not being a USC, I have no idea of how these things work.... I have read other threads, and I know everything in our petition is in order. Unfortunately, I have a lot on my plate now, and I think everyone knows there are times when you feel weaker and less optimistic. I am sorry if anyone took offense to my words, or thought I was being a wet blanket just for the sake of it.

Congratulations to the new approvals! I wish you all the best, I really do.

As for us, if by the time Michael is ready to leave here we haven't received anything, I'm going to ask him to cancel our petition and move here. I can't face wasting any more time. Our life here won't be easy (not going into detail... suffice it to say that it would be next to impossible for him to get a job, and he has to pay support to three children), but at least we will be together.

Just checked, but no touches whatsoever... I am starting to think there is something wrong with our petition. I really hope something happens soon, because I am getting really depressed. Today Michael got hurt at work (nothing serious hopefully), and I am feeling so dejected thinking I can't be with him. I wish I could be more positive, but I haven't been feeling very well these past couple of days, and this usually influences my mood. Sorry for being such a wet blanket!

I did hear you, Alina... Unfortunately, it's not easy to forget that I am closer to 50 than to 40, and I am concerned about being too old to find a good job when I get there. In most of Europe, people my age are considered too old for the job market, and I don't really see myself being a housewife on a long-term basis. As I said before, more than half of my life is behind me, and wasting so much time like that is really getting to me. Hopefully the approval will come soon, though I am afraid I have lost hope it will be before early August, if not even later.

I hear you, Kim... This time last year I was in the US with Michael, where I spent exactly two months. After I came back in early September, we had to wait until the Xmas holidays to see each other again. We've spent a grand total of 30 days together since the day I left the US... Luckily he's coming here in 10 days for a couple of weeks. I hope we'll get our approval before that. As I already said in an earlier post, the Naples Consulate, while probably one of the easiest in the world as regards interviews and such, seems to take its time in sending papers and arranging interviews... Let's just hope for the best!

Really wishing you the best for tomorrow, Bex! I hope everything goes smoothly, and you can join Alan as soon as possible.

Michael is coming here on July 23, so he will be able to spend his birthday (July 25) with me. I am hoarding my vacation days to use right before my departure, so I told him to come here instead. I was also nervous about being turned away at the POE, and really didn't want to risk losing a hefty sum of money (airfares from the US to Rome for this time of year average € 1,000). So, we'll have a couple of weeks together, hoping this will be the last time we have to say goodbye.

Unfortunately, even if we were approved soon (which at this point I doubt), there will be some time to wait for the interview at the Naples consulate. August is a very slow month in Italy, and they are said to take things easy (even if they are reportedly anything but difficult at the interview). I just hope I'll be able to be there before Xmas... I had anticipated a shorter wait, but those two lost months at the beginning really did us in.

Let's just hope that thing I was told about my job raising suspicions was not true... I checked the USCIS website some time ago, and there were no new touches. I don't think it's worth asking Michael to call them, seen as they will probably decline to answer, or say they don't know anything. There is nothing to do but wait, and keep our fingers crossed.

Just for curiosity's sake... What about those people who are ahead of us in Igor's list? Do we know for sure if they are still waiting for NOAs, or if they just have dropped off the radar? We are now # 39 on the list, but it seems there are still a number of February filers waiting, not to mention March filers.

Very sorry about the interview, Pandora - I really hope things work out for the best for you, and - most important of all - everything is OK with your blood test. As to the Affidavit of Support, I find it ridiculous that they want the USC to prove they can support you, without even considering the foreign fiancé might be much better off than they are. Michael has a good job, and is a very hard worker, so there should not be any problems for him (in spite of the child support he has to pay) - however, I am the one who is financially better off, and I have my doubts as to my ever becoming a public charge.

Btw, my real name is Raffaella, though on forums I generally use screen names. The one I have here (and on a couple of other forums too) is the title of a Deep Purple song which I love. As my signature says, Michael and I share a love of rock music - he is a very good bass player, while I am just a very keen listener!

I know about your child, Kim.. Being a lurker, I read all your posts (which I have always loved btw), and I gathered as much. I usually am a rather sympathetic person, and I know so many people whose lot is much worse than mine. I also know what havoc the loss of a child can wreak on a parent, and I was so admiring of you when I read that. Such a loss is not easy to overcome, if this is the right word.

We had to wait some time for Michael to get his divorce too. We met three months after he had legally separated from his wife, a woman who very nearly destroyed him. He hasn't seen his kids for over a year, and is also estranged from his family. Reading this, I am sure everyone now will think, what a couple of antisocial people! Well, we are both good-hearted, decent people, though at present we have somewhat withdrawn from the rest of the world for a series of reasons. We are very much alike, even if our past lives were very different. I am the more open of the two, and this is why I am posting here on behalf of both of us.

Let's just hope that job thing was just one of the stupid rumours people like to spread like wildfire.. Unfortunately, I have to say, the US government is not very popular in Italy at the moment, and probably people tend to blow some things out of proportion. We'll see...

Just want to thank you all for the kind words of support... I am sorry if I have come across like the archetypal 'glass half empty' whiner, but I can assure you I've tried to keep up my optimism for all this time, in spite of the almost two months lost at the beginning. However, when I've started seeing people who filed at the same time as us being approved, I haven't been able to stop myself from panicking.

I've posted here rarely, since I tend to be shy around forums when people seem to have known each other for a long time, therefore I have never said much about my situation. Besides the fact I'm probably much older than many of you (48 next December), and the way Michael and I met (which is mentioned in my timeline), I've always kept rather quiet about myself. However, there are reasons why I sometimes get very discouraged. In the past seven years, I've endured a lot of grief and disappointment (including the death of my beloved mother and of a number of friends and relatives), and when I met Michael I was on the verge of depression.

At present, I am very much alone. I have no friends in Rome, and my only contact with people is at work. Both my parents are dead, and I am estranged from my only brother because of his wife's intervention. I've never been married, and have no children. Michael is the only person who loves me, and cares for me - it is not just a question of being a lovesick fool. I am an adult half of whose life is already behind her, and who wonders how many good years she has left. I am afraid of being discriminated because of my age when I try to find a job (in spite of being highly educated and very fluent in English). On top of everything, my working conditions here are getting worse and worse, and so is everything else around me. I need desperately to turn a new page, but I'm mortally afraid of being trapped here without any hope of ever being able to be happy with the man I love.

I apologise for venting, and understand most of you could get a very negative impression from what I said. I assure you I'm not a bad person at all, and have never hurt anyone in my life. I love Michael more than anything else in the world, and don't ask for anything more than being able to be his wife and share a life with him. I wonder what kind of world we have created, where people like us are punished for the fault of having fallen in love with someone born in another country...

I am afraid I know why our petition hasn't been approved yet.. .I started a thread in the General K1 section. so you can all refer to it if you want to know more. Just losing hope... I have started to think they don't want me because I am too old, or whatever reason they might have. My fiancé could not move to Italy without facing very big problems, so if they deny us, it will probably kill our relationship. People filing on the same day or even after have already been approved. I know that there are people who have waited years before they were allowed to be together, but when you are close to 50, every wasted day feels so damn heavy.

Please forgive me for my negativity, but I've been feeling so damn down these days...

The only thing hot here is the climate, unfortunately... We're in the throes of a nasty heatwave here in Rome, and I don't have AC at home (I do at work though, which makes things better during the week). I have a very low tolerance for hot weather, especially of the humid variety, which makes it hard for me to breathe properly. And yes, I suppose I'm sad too... NOA2 shouldn't be long now, but the wait has become even more unbearable than before. It was exactly three months ago that we filed, and sometimes it feels like it's never going to happen.

OK, deep breaths... Calm, relaxing thoughts... I will get my approval by the end of the week, and everything will be okay...

No, you won't be left till last, because there will be our petition to keep you company.... Our timelines are very similar, but since 6/17 there were no touches, and I'm starting to get worried. You should have a look at the Embassy page here on the site, and make sure what their requirements are. In Italy they accept original documents that are either in English or Italian, so I would think if his birth cert is in Danish, there should be no need to translate it. Unfortunately, every Embassy or consulate has its own guidelines, so the best thing to do is to get acquainted with them before wasting money and time.

Hello Aprilers! Waiting for the movers to come and take my stuff away. If everything goes well, I'll be able to leave by November 20. I'm so happy! smile.gif Hope everything is going well with all of you. Has any of you already dealt with the hassle of the transcription of medical results?

There's something else I'd like to add... This thread here is so very nice and friendly, but I am more and more horrified at what goes on in the rest of the forums. I feel increasingly uncomfortable, so that I never post anywhere else but here, and I've often thought about having my membership cancelled. There are some people around that really give me the creeps.. This is supposed to be a support site, and instead I see mud-slinging and insults flung all around. Beautiful pics, Kim! You both look so happy! smile.gif

I'm still here in Rome, since I have to wait for my leave of absence to be officially granted. I would've gladly resigned if it had been wise, but unfortunately I have to take into account anything that could happen before I am granted permanent residency. In Italy, at my age, it would be impossible to find another job, and I told as much to the lady who deals with such requests at the ministry I work for.

Hopefully by the end of the coming week things will have been sorted out. The movers are coming on Nov 5 (and that will cost me an arm and a leg!), and after that, whether the inheritance question has been solved or not, I'll buy a plane ticket, and leave no later than Nov 20. I want to be there by Thanksgiving, because both of us deserve it. If that means falling out with my brother for good, so be it.. He's never been there for me when I needed it, and his wife hates me anyway. So, you see, not all Italian families are nice and close... My parents were wonderful people, but they are gone, and what I am left with is not what I would've wished for. Oh, well...

OK, got back from Naples a few hours ago, and I guess you can all see from my signature that everything went well.. The long-awaited visa is stuck to a page of my passport, and it still feels sort of unreal, after such a long wait (eight months all told). Though the preparation was nerve-wracking, the interview itself was one of the funniest moments in my life - all the CO (whom I suspect was none other than the consul himself) wanted to talk about was the area in Rome where he used to live and near which I live myself, and the disappearance of a particularly beloved street market. Talk about a piece of cake! biggrin.gif

Anyway, if there are no snags, I am planning to leave in the early days of November... I'm so very happy!!!

First off, congratulations to everybody, and sorry for the delay! smile.gif Michael got here safely on Saturday afternoon, and later today we're leaving for Naples. Medical will be tomorrow morning, and interview on Wednesday at 10 - though it may be that I'll have both tomorrow, as it seems to be happening quite often. In any case, we're going to spend three days there, enjoying the local pizza and delicious pastries. This morning, as a sort of good wish, I made pancakes for breakfast, so Michael will be able to tell the CO that I can even cook American specialities! biggrin.gif I'll report back on Thursday, when we finally get home - hopefully with visa in hand.

RE the translation of documents: I think every Consulate is different. In Naples they accept either English or Italian, and only documents in other languages than those two have to be translated. I'll just translate my birth certificate for AOS, even if I have to ask someone else to sign in my stead (want to avoid any conflict of interest).

Happy thoughts? You bet! Michael is coming on Saturday afternoon to be with me in Naples. I have booked a lovely room in a nice hotel right in the centre of the city, and we'll spend three nights there - our pre-honeymoon! Of course, I don't think any of us can help being nervous before the unknown, but I know that they have absolutely no reason to deny me the visa - on the contrary, I'd say!

Well, best wishes to everyone - weddings, interviews, and the like! If everything goes as it should, I'll be in the US by early November. And I have every intention of cooking a special Thanksgiving dinner for my love! smile.gif

Thanks a lot for the compliments, Damian! smile.gif I started learning English when I was 8 years old, and to all intents and purposes never stopped... I have a degree in English Language and Literature, and am a qualified teacher of English (taught in high school for eight years too). People say I am very gifted for languages, which I think is quite true, since I speak French, German and Finnish as well, and have a good grasp of Spanish. My command of English is one of my greatest accomplishments, though, and this is one of the main reasons why we thought it was better for me to move to the US rather than the other way round.

And yes... I am Italian, born and bred, though I like to see myself as a citizen of the world! biggrin.gif

I'm so elated!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif Tomorrow I'm going to the public records office again to check whether that cert is ready (and I'll apply for a new ID card too... It'll be useful for when I have to spend time in Italy), and now I'm going out to pick up my pics. Incidentally, next Monday is both mine and Michael's name day according to the Catholic calendar.. I am not religious myself, and he is in a very unconventional way, but we were both brought up as Catholics, and I used to celebrate name days when my parents were alive. A lucky sign perhaps?
