Well said, Ron. good.gif

I wish you would post the same over in the new Thailand Thread, especially about the laws regarding disrespectful speech regarding the King. I guess that's why I get so up in arms when someone says anything bad about the Royal family, because I respect those laws. American's forget that our "freedom of speech" is not upheld worldwide! Even my wife, when I had her read some of the posts was shocked, and worried that "someone" would track the IP address' and go after anyone saying anything negative towards the King!

blush.gif Thanks, Ron!

Wish I could say it was all my idea, but I was a problem child growing up (I know its hard to believe), and I was told by my father that I had 2 weeks after graduating HS to get out of the house! laughing.gif I started looking for recruiters, and decided on the Navy, since it had both of the things I loved... Ships & Aircraft! As a big "Star Trek" fan growing up, I could only dream of one day ending up on the "Big E", aka the USS Enterprise, CVN-65.

I am proud of my military service, and my continued service to the DoD. I have been working for the DoD in some sort or fashion since 1978, and have always enjoyed it. Now I launch space vehicles for a living!

I traveled a lot growing up with my family, and continued traveling in the military. Because of the military, and my travels overseas, I learned how fortunate Americans truly are, and fell in love with Asia in the process. My first time to Thailand was with my family in 1968, and even as a young boy, I fell in love with Thailand because of the people, the food, and the culture. What struck me most, was the architecture of the Wats and Grand Palace, which I am still in love with today. My second trip back was in 2001 and have spent almost a year in-country and traveled extensively throughout Thailand.

I have done my share of living in “third world” countries, and because of it, never look down on my hosts or take them for granted, no matter where I am living. In my heart, I feel Thailand is one of the best places I have ever lived, and that is why I really dislike anyone saying anything bad about it, and why that is where I will retire. I just hope & pray that all the current problems in Thailand will get resolved.

I am in the Navy. I enlisted in 89, been here ever since. I spent my first two years in Sicily, I did ten years stationed on the East coast and transfered to the West coast back in Apr 2001. June 5 will be my 20 year anniversary. I'm hoping to retire from the Navy in 2012. Hopefully i can get a Civil Servant job when i retire, just have to see whats out there i guess.

Cool! You joined the year I got out to go to college. It was time to go back to Sea Duty, and I was being pushed to take the Chiefs exam, and since trying to get the Navy to send me to college was more trouble than it was worth, I decided to get out after 11 years and get my BSEE from Texas A&M. It was a difficult decision, and the one thing I regret now, is not going back active duty afterwards. I was stationed at NAS Lemoore for 10 years and did 3 WestPacs. 1 on the Kitty Hawk and 2 on the Enterprise. Was on Beach Det at NAS Cubi Pt for over 6 mos which is when I picked up Tagalog! Got out as an AT1(AW). At least by being Civil Service, I was able to "purchase" my 11 years from the Navy towards my retirements and time of service.

Thanks for serving! good.gif

How come Sawasdee needs to be a single long thread anyway? If we could start dedicated topics in their own threads it might organize all this stuff more easily.

Hyena, concerning your rant about prejudice, I feel you are going to have real problems if you ever bring your fiancée to the US. If you can’t handle the prejudice in Thailand, how will you handle it here? Do you think that Thailand is the only Asian country with the prejudice you talked about? What about all the prejudice that still exists here in the US?

I have lived and worked in the Philippines and Taiwan, along with visiting many other Asian and Pacific countries, and they all do the same thing. You are right about the people here in the US wanting darker skin and the Asians wanting lighter skin, but the reasons are not even close to being the same. In Asia, if you have dark skin, it means you are a “blue collar” worker and have to work out in the sun, but if you have light skin, you are a “white collar” worker that sits inside a building all day. Here in the US its about beauty, or wanting to look like you have the time and money to sit out on a beach or the deck of a boat somewhere getting a tan.

It always concerns me when I hear you going off on the food, language, and customs of Thailand. If they bother you so much, why the hell are you trying to marry someone from there? Do you think you are rescuing her? Bringing her here to the US does not guarantee her happiness. Not everyone believes life is golden here in the US.

I think someone had a good idea about starting another thread in the Asia forum for your rants, rather than filling up this thread, which should primarily be about immigration and positive new and information. I for one liked it when I didn’t have to go through pages of ####### to read the more appropriate posts. As one of the original members of the first and second SAWASDEE threads, I’d like to see them continue to be used for what they were intended for.

One other thing… and this is for everyone; when replying to posts, don’t quote the whole post if it’s not relevant, especially the overly verbose ones, like this one is now becoming. All it does is take up more space and make it harder to read through the thread.

Thanks, Robert

Then maybe in the interest of saving time, and using people more effectively, or less people, they no longer have time to send out e-mails.

However; if they updated his case online, then its a good sign, because like daboyz said, with recent approvals of I-751s, they haven't even changed the online status, let alone send out e-mails.

Who knows... USCIS is whak! wacko.gif

Anyone ever notice that date from approval date on the NOA2 to actually receiving an email notification? Is the email notification useless as well? Did you find out via email or US mail?

From what I've seen, it looks like CRIS works for CSC, but not VSC. I found out via the US mail. I never got an email.

CRIS is the USCIS. If the case number starts with WAC, it's CSC, with MSC, it's Missouri, and with EAC, it's VSC. I've gone through all three so far! CSC for K-1, MSC for AOS, which was transferred to CSC, and EAC for I-751, which also has been transferred to CSC.

It seems they are still pretty good about sending e-mails for K-1s, and updating your case online, but as for my case with all the recent transfers from VSC to CSC for Removal of Conditions, people are getting their approvals in the US Mail, with no updates to their online case.

Having your case "touched" is indeed a good sign, especially this late. If they were going to send an RFE, they should have done it already.

Depending on the source: http://www.dopa.go.th/

If you go by population, then Nonthaburi is the 2nd largest. If you average the area of the city along with the population, then one can make an argument for Chiang Mai. Surat Thani and Udon Thani have more area than Chiang Mai, but less population. Population wise, Korat is 6th, Chiang Mai is 5th.

Either way... I still love Chiang Mai, and have always thought of it as the 2nd city in Thailand!

Exactly... that's why I love it up there. You have everything that a big city has to offer, but it feels more like country style living. It's always hard for me to believe Chiang Mai is the 2nd largest city.

That's cool! Just wanted to know if I was alone, cuz I have a considerable amount invested in Thailand, and I look forward to a comfortable retirement there!

I have bought two townhouses (side-by-side) in Chiang Mai, and along with the land her father gave us near Kalasin, we just recently purchased 70 rai of land in the same area, that used to belong to her aunt, who had put herself in debt by taking out loans on it.

I still plan to buy another home of our own in the foot hills of Chiang Mai, since I really love it there in and near Chiang Mai. That will be the retirement house! Goes to show how serious I am about going back to Thailand to retire, and I can't wait till its time.

So Pete, given all the time you spent in Thailand, do you own any property or land? The same question could be asked of Scott as well.

I'm just curious what preparations the guys who have spent the most time in Thailand have done in order to set themselves up for the future, especially if they are planning to one day retire in Thailand?

Farangs can not own land in Thailand.

They can purchase land through their wife, and even have their name on the title. I think you know what I mean. Thailand changed the law that required a Thai woman who gets married from having to change their last name, which then made it possible for them to purchase land with money they recieved from their husband, since the government wants to know where they got the money to purchase property. I know, becaue I've done it.

Right. The wife can buy it. If the farang puts up the money, and the wife decides to end the marriage, the farang is left out in the cold with nothing. Farangs can buy a condo as long as the ownership in the building is at least 51% Thai.

So have you put up any money?! Or are you not that trusting?! unsure.gif

I've bribed a Thai police officer before. He had pulled me over on my motorcycle and tried to issue me a 6,000 Baht ticket. His claim was that I was driving in the wrong lane, but the only reason I was in that lane was because his partner had pulled over a truck. I only saw the truck, not the police and was ready to pass it when the cop flagged me down. Instead I pulled out two 100 Baht bills; one for him and one for partner. He shook my hand with a huge grin saying in broken English "Tank you, tank you," and waved me on my way. I learned my lesson that when a Bangkok traffic cop flags you down, you just keep on driving: They don't go after motorcyclists.

Another time I was stopped, as they had set up a road block and I wasn't going to bust through it. Similar situation, in that they wanted me to pay an exorbitant amount. This time I honestly said, "I am leaving Thailand in two days (after living there for four years) and I will never pay your ticket. So go ahead and issue it, but I will not pay it." He sighed in disappointment and waved me on.

edit: Generally, I am quite a law abiding citizen and in the past would never have thought of doing and saying such things. However, I know exploitation when I see it and my own integrity would not allow me to be taken advantage of as such. Looking back on it, I could have handled both situations differently, but at the time that was how I reacted.

In Chiang Mai, the police like to set up check points to stop people on scooters that aren’t wearing helmets. One time I came around a corner and was unable to avoid a check point. As you, 200 bht slipped to the officer was enough to get me out of any citation, which would have included no license and no helmet.

One other time, when they were stopping people on a much larger thorough fare, I just acted like I didn’t see the officer vigorously trying to waive me over, and got the hell out of dodge!

I believe he is just busy with the responsibilities of married life.

Whether he got married or not, doesn't mean that one's old life ceases to exist! laughing.gif

I seriously doubt that just because one gets married means that they now spend all their time in the bedroom (if that is what you’re implying). If it is... that type of relationship won't last very long!

Couples still need time to themselves or to be able to participate in activities that they enjoy.

Those are my two favorites, too (although Rin usually makes Nam Tok Moo as we both prefer pork over beef)! We had Pad Krapow Gai with Kai Dao last night for dinner (actually Horapha since it is impossible to find Holy Basil in Memphis). My fav breakfast is Kai Jiao Moo Sub (with Prik Nam Pla to kick it up).

Funny that most of the people I work with ask if I am sick of Pad Thai. We've had it once in the two years she has been here!

A lot of times we will still have Khao Pad and Pad Thai, since they are relatively easy to make. We also eat a lot of Ma Ma! laughing.gif

Guys, no point in arguing with each other. I think it is clear what the COs are looking for, and that is "two-way" communication, which is definitely a change from past requirements. It does seem a little over the top to me, but it does make sense. How many "couples" are out there in a situation where it is just the guy with all the feelings, and putting forth all the effort, while the girl could care less, except to get her "plane ticket" to the US. By seeing that the girl is making as much of an effort to contact the guy, it shows that she is serious about the relationship.

What strikes me as odd is that they are not taking into consideration the fact that it is cheaper for us to call them, that we are trying to save them money, and that it is easier to contact them when we are available, instead of the other way around.

Lastly, I don't know about most of you, but I was raised where it is inappropriate for a girl to call a boy, but maybe I'm a little old fashioned! laughing.gif

I fully concur. It seems to have gotten much worse since 2006 and before. Sorry you guys are having to go through all this. Hope things get better soon.

Has anyone tried submitting digital information to the Consulate? We have well over 600 chat logs from over the years as well as dozens of photographs, all of which originate as digital files. I have printed several chats and photos for my fiancée, however I am sending her everything on a CD. I am wondering if they want to see more evidence if she would be able to hand them the CD and have them inspect the contents of it.

I've read somewhere that CD's were not acceptable. Best to print out the info.

afisher, you read correctly. The consulate will not accept any digital media due to threats from viruses, malware, and other nasty code.

ThaitoUSA, you will need to print everything out. To minimize, just take samplings from different periods of time, to show a range of time, not every single chat, and a dozen photos is more than enough, especially if they are in different areas or places.

I did not believe that any documents in Thai needed to be translated for the US Consulate. I thought they would accept all Thai and English documents. No?

I tend to agree with you, unless of course things have changed. There is no need for that document in the AOS process, so no need for an English translation. unsure.gif The Consulate staff can read the document and verify its authenticity.

Back in the U.S. with the wife. POE was easy for her. They gave me a hard time about walking around with 2 passports, and took one of them. I'm kinda wondering what happens now with getting the green card? Does it just come in the mail?

Since you have been married for over 2 years, your wife should have received an I-551 stamp in her passport, which gives her permanent residency. Be sure to verify the expiration date, and that it is NOT a temporary I-551!

They will mail her GC to your home address.

Congratulations on your safe arrival home, and welcome to the US to your wife! good.gif good.gif good.gif

You have nothing to do now for 3 years, at which time your wife can apply for Naturalization, if she so desires. You may have gone through a lot of ####### to get here, but at least now you don't have to deal with the USCIS like the rest of us! wink.gif

She got the visa. It only took 3 trips to the embassy. I really think the fact that I was there pushed them over the edge. I want to thank everyone that helped me through this:

Pushbrk
Rebeccajo ( even though I know she hates me)
Mommy
Raymond Bodemer
Richard Diran
Birch Beer (Frank)

I paid a lawyer $1800 for no good reason. When I got the 221g, he was no help at all. This was her third trip to the Embassy this week, my first. I really could not have done this without the help of everyone here.

For that I thank you all.

Congratulations Daboyz!!! good.gif good.gif good.gif

Chok Dee on the US part of your journey! biggrin.gif

Sitting in a hotel on soi 22. Can't sleep. Second interview tomorrow. Stressing out.

Cool. We (honey+me) spent the month of Sept at Liberty Apartments on Soi 22, near Queens Park.

Lots of good eats + stuff to do nearby. Great Mexican restaurant on Soi 18 as I recall, best guacamole in Thailand.

You're in Thailand eating Mexican food?! unsure.gif

Yeah, it's kind of funny, but it sure is nice to get some Mexican food sometimes. (Especially if you're from Texas). There's a place on Soi 22, kind of across from Larry's Dive, in a little mall area (can't remember the name) that has a Tuesday night Mexican Buffet. I like it for a change of pace sometimes. I don't remember ever seeing any Mexican Food on Soi 18. Anyway ...

My wife and I will be in Thailand in June. June through Mid-July

I'll be wanting some Mexican Food.

Daboyz - What's your status????

Best,
Dvd

I found a great little Mexican taco stand inside Topps Market on Thong Lor. The chicken tacos are great, I found myself getting them a few times a week for lunch. The rest of the mexican food I had in Bangkok, was expensive, and not good. I have a friend that lives on Soi 22, and always saw the Mexican place when I was walking to his place, but never ate there.

Hey don't get me wrong, I'm from Texas too, and being a Texas Aggie, definitely love Mexican and Tex Mex food. However, its just not the same if you eat it anywhere else! I'm so used to eating Thai food, which I've been doing for 8 years, that when I go to Thailand, I eat "Authentic" Thai food! Just like you can't get authentic Thai food in a Thai restaurant in Florida, you can't get authentic Mexican food in Thailand. no0pb.gif

It took me about almost a year for this approval. i'm so happy!! star_smile.gif

Too bad I cant say good bye yet to USCIS since i'll be applying for the citizenship in May... but at least I get to use this new card for my upcoming trip to Thailand (wish all the protest stop by then!!) and I hope my GC arrive soon!

Good luck y'all good.gif

Congrats Anya!! good.gif good.gif good.gif

We shouldn't be too far behind you, and since our case has now been transferred to CSC, I'm hoping it will be only a couple of weeks.

How quickly they grow up!!! laughing.gif wink.gif
