Question for experts on this thread:

I just went to buy tickets for myself and my wife and stepdaughter to go to Thailand for Songkran 2010. My wife just got a new credit card with 0% interest we used to purchase the tickets. Problem is, we purchased my wifes ticket in her married name and it is her maiden name showing on her passport - so the name on the tickkets and on the passport does not match. It seems to me that I read and or was told that as long as you have a certified copy of your marriage certificate attached to the passport we'll be OK - can anyone advise me about this based on "actual experience" rather than conjecture?

Thanks!

You are correct. You will definitely need a copy of your marriage certificate.

It's too bad that they don't just issue a 3 year GC and replace it with a passport at the end of the three year period, instead of converting it for just one year... but then again, who ever said the process was logical.

Yeah, no kidding. But what the heck are you thinking?!!! blink.gif They wouldn't be able to charge all that extra money and casue all the extra grief, not to mention increas processing times for everything else!!! whistling.gif

Sorry for the late post, but I've been pretty busy since getting home and getting settled. Wanted to tell our story concerning the Bangkok Consulate for future members going for their interviews.

To begin with, I arrived at 4:00pm on the 15th and we stayed at the Centre Point Wireless Suites just up the road from the Consulate. Very nice hotel with great breakfast buffet! Chutima's interview was scheduled for 7:30am the next morning, May 16th.

Woke up at 5:30 and went to eat breakfast at 6:10. At 6:35 we headed out the door, on foot, for the Consulate. Arrived at the Consulate at 6:45 (cheated, and got a cab half-way there since the shoes Chutima was wearing were hurting her feet!). Were inside the Consulate at 7:00, and at Window 5 by 7:15.

Handed all our documents to the lady at Window 5. She gave back the two photos, the copy of the NOA2, the X-ray she removed from the Medical Exam envelope, and the 3rd sheed from the DS-156. Had me write my name on the DS-156K, had Chutima sign the DS-230 Part I, filled in the blank on Q22 of DS-230 Part I "In what occupation do you intend to work in the United States?", and asked for relationship photos. I handed her a ziplock baggie with 5 photos inside, and that was it.

At 7:25 got called back to Windo 5 where a Thai man was now sitting, who asked for 2 passport photos, so I gave the photos back, telling him we were given them back before! He just said "Sorry".

At 8:50 we were called, this time to Window 6. First the man called Chutima's name, then mine. It was hard to understand him, so I walked up trying to find out what was going on. I thought maybe they wanted something else. The man at Window 5 pointed over to Window 6, so I walked up. There was an Amereican man there, who asked me if I had my passport and could show him any stamps showing I was in Thailand in 2005. I gave him my passport, which had 5 entry/exit stamps! Then he spoke with Chutima, in Thai, and asked her how many times I had visited her, and when did I arrive the last time. He then asked me, in English, if I spoke Thai, and I replied to him, in Thai, that I spoke Thai. He then had Chutima signed the DS-156K, scanned her index fingers, filled out the white index card, then handed it to us along with all the proof of relationship documentation we had handed in. He told us to come back the next day at 3:00pm to get the visa, and there was no need to come early! At 8:55 we were walking out the door!

Then next day, May 17th, we went back and waited in the American Services Section waiting room for a Thai man to show up with a cart full of visas, give a short talk, in Thai and some in English, and then handed out the visas with the "brown envelopes" attached.

All in all, a very painless procedure, but glad it is all over!

The night of the 17th we took freinds and family out for a celebration dinner, then the morning of the 18th we went to see the Monk who did our Thai ceremony, along with Chutima's mother, to get blessing for our trip and new life together. The news was very good! The 18th we went to Quality Suites Airport to spend our last 2 nights there, since we had a very early morning flight on the 20th. Chutima's best friend, sister, mother, and step father met us at the airport.

At the China Airlines check-in counter, there were no problems, and I had already obtained and filled out the Thai Arrival/Departure card for Chutima, since I knew it would be required for her to get through Passport Control. I had also picked up an I-94 in advance, and had that filled out and ready for the POE. Made it throug Passport Control without any problems and headed for our gate!

When we finally got to Honolulu, it was 8:00am when they opened the aircraft main door. We made our way to immigration, only to find there were 11 other families from an earlier flight from the Philippines waiting to be processed!!! We waitied an hour and 45 minutes before we were finally processed. Just prior to our number being called, the supervisor called me over and appologized for the delay, and brought some additional officers over to help process all the cases. We were treated very politely and had no problems getting through Immigration other than the long wait. Good thing I didn't schedule our flight to Kauai until 12 noon! A representative from China Airlines had came looking for us to make sure we hadn't abandoned our 4 checked bags, and told us where they were. After clearing Immigration, we were able to get our bags quickly and then made it through customs without any problem either.

We are now pretty much unpacked and settled in. Thank goodness this is a long weekend so we can go do some major grocery shopping and "stock-up"!

Well, that's about it! If you managed to read through all that, thanks! It's now on to AOS!!! :D

Way to go Chutima and Robert  Congratulations!!

George

Hey George! Baby Anthony sure is growing fast!!! :o

Well, things are going well, settling in nicely. Chutima just about has all her things unpacked and put away, and is getting used to the layout of the house. She swears I used to run a restaurant because of all the stuff I have in the kitchen, so she is pleased with that! She's even got "turned-around" inside the house, which I found quite amusing! She tried to go out the hall closet, thinking it was the door to the garage!

There is a grocery store that carries a lot of Thai products that we have already been to, and this weekend I'll take her to the other side of the island where there are more stores with better selections, especially concerning produce and fresh seafood! :D

I'm glad this is a three-day weekend coming up, so we will have time to do our shopping plus some more sight seeing. We're still trying to decide on a wedding location here on the island. What is funny, our temps are ranging between 69 - 79 degrees F and Chutima is complaining about beeing cold!!!

Other than the marriage certificate and some supporting evidence for the I-864, our AOS package is just about complete. I'm ready to get that started!

Well, that's about it for now. Hope everyone is well and has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! :joy:

Thanks

Have her start here Anya:

http://www.uscis.gov...forms/i-485.htm

The I-485 is fillable, as are many of the forms now. Just see what's available on the USCIS site first. At least that way she will have the most recent versions. That htm also has links to all the other forms and procedures necessary to adjust status while in the U.S.

The items you must send into the consulate to get your interview date are as follows:

Check-list (signed and dated with address)
DS-230 Part I (unsigned)
Two Passport Photos (Print name on back in felt tip marker)
Copy of Passport

Make sure you put your case number on the outside of the envelope and address it to the "Immigrant Visa Unit".

Just a little clarification on the 4 items:

The check is for $100, right?
The passport photos are of her (the Thai national)?
The copy of passport is hers?

Oh, and how/when do you contact NVC to get a case # and find out status? Thanks.

-Tong Daeng

The $100 is a joke, but it will have to be paid (actually 4,000 baht) at a Thai Post Office to get the fee receipt for the interview.
Yes the passport and photos are of her.
As for contacting the NVC, go to the NVC forum, or wait till you get your letter from them.

Pardon my ignorance, just got NOA2 last night but is it imperative to sign-up for the US embassy in Thailand's "Visa Information and Appointment Website and Call Center" service? If so, anyone know the benefits and if it can help you get a quicker interview date? Any experience using these two services and recommendation if one (the call center or website) service is better? Any other tips on how to get a quicker interview date in BKK? Thanks in advance!

-Tong Daeng

You do not sign up for that. That is for non-immigrant visas, and though technically a K-1 is a non-immigrant visa, it is processed by the Immigrant Visa Unit in Bangkok. You must wait till your case is sent from the NVC to Bangkok, then send in your Packet 3 documents, then wait for your Packet 4 which will have your interview appointment letter. Now is the time to get the Police Certificate and Medical Exam out of the way, along with collecting all the necessary documentation for the interview, including the I-134 and supporting documents. You cannot get a "quicker interview date" at Bangkok. Expect a 30 to 45 day wait. Search the timelines for other people going through Bangkok to get a better idea of the kind of wait to expect.

Congrats on your NOA2.

Has anybody tried to get a tourist visa from Thailand while waiting on your K1?
I do not plan on doing anything illegal and my fiancee will leave the country as required when the visa has expired. I just want to know if I should go through the trouble and expense based on other peoples experience.

Thanks

In order to receive a B2 visa, you must prove to the CO that the applicant is not intending to immigrate. Since a K-1 visa is for the purpose of immigrating, it might be a little tricky to prove otherwise! It is hard enough to get a B2 visa in Thailand, so I would think it next to impossible to get one when applying for a K-1.

MEDICAL

Are there any other forms I need to send? Please, help.... :help: :help:

Bill

Bill,

Take a deep breath... we have discussed this many times already on this thread, and rather than telling you to go back and look for it, I will just tell you. The items you must send into the consulate to get your interview date are as follows:

Check-list (signed and dated with address)
DS-230 Part I (unsigned)
Two Passport Photos (Print name on back in felt tip marker)
Copy of Passport
$100.00 bill (just kidding! wanted to see who was paying attention!)

Only the first four items, and make sure you put your case number on the outside of the envelope and address it to the "Immigrant Visa Unit".

Good Luck!

ummm......

thinking about back in Thailand....... I've never actually heard a guy use "Chan" normally they use their own name or if they are younger than me they will use "Pom" or if they are older they use "Pi" ??? or Pom - or if they are talking with very best freind they use "Ku" ?? which is not polite but they normally use it in their group.

I have a difficult time explaining this to my friends - even for girls - i've never use "chan" - i use "raw" ??? whiich means 'we' but most girls (and sometimes guys too) use it wildly.. i myself use my name and "raw" to indicate myself.. and use "chan" to my close friends only.. not even with my bf (exs)

umm... how complicate thai language is.. and ofcourse.. i fail the thai grammar in school

Anya, when speaking Thai, or hearing Thai, I too am used to people using their name, and the name of the person they are addressing, as opposed to I, Me, or You. When talking with friends or people you are close to, that is the norm. For example, I wouldn't say Pom chop Khun. I would say Robert chop Anya. :P I know the term "raw" as well, but normally never use it, though Chutima does. Once again... my use of "chan" was meant as a means of kidding... not for people who are trying to learn how to speak Thai to use!

Now... if this isn't enough to confuse people... I don't know what is!!! ?????

Hmmmm!!!
Tik says Chan or De Chan is only for ladies.. Pom or Gra Pom is for the man
Pom informal man
Gra pom formal man
Chan ladies informal
De chan female formal.
First time she said Chan Rak Koon to me I said back to her and she corrected me
I must say Pom... The ladies use chan... Now we say Tee rak alot....

I just dont want you to have someone laugh at you because you said chan like happened to me

And Tik is absolutely correct, although you will normally not hear a woman say Di Chan, since it meant more for writing Thai.

I wrote it for Chutima, since it's a joke we have with each other. Not to have the correctness of my Thai analyzed by a farang.

Thanks for your concern though. People can laugh all they want. Like Chutima says, it doesn't bother her if a farang makes a mistake speaking Thai, because it is not their language, and she appreciates anyone who trys, even if sometimes it is wrong. Do you laugh at Thai people when they say something wrong in English?

Well I did not want to wait .. Hell I thought she was pregg when I left Thailand

And yes to Tik I am lor Mak Mak...

In your avitar dont you mean POM not Chan..

No I don't mean Pom... I mean Chan. Same as if you say "Chan rak ter". When it is with someone familiar you can use "chan" and "ter". Not "Pom" and "Khun" which are more formal.

***Question***

For those of you whose fiancee was never married before, did you get a Single Stauts Certificate, or was anyone ever asked for one?

I'm wondering how necessary it is to have one, and if I need one, where to get one and what is needed to get it?

Hi Robert,

My wife got a statement from her local amphur. Basically the statement said she has never registered her marriage. She went with her father and had to show the house registry and her Thai ID.

At the interview it was never asked for. The ONLY reason why I had her get one was from reading a poster's report in Thai Falang Board....that his then fiancee was asked to get one before the visa was approved. I am still not sure what triggers the CO to ask for such a statement.

regards,

George

Hi George!

Thanks for the info. Chutima feels it's silly to get one when they don't ask for one in any of the documentation. I want to just be over prepaired!!! It does seem silly that just because you don't have a divorce certificate that you have to have a single certificate!

roi_aggie,

My personal experience is that I added my wife as a joint-holder of my checking and savings accounts while she was still in Thailand waiting for my petitions to be approved. She had no US ID of any kind, only our Thai marriage certificate with English translation and her other Thai ID. I scanned and e-mailed the bank's signature card to her, she signed it and mailed it back to the bank, and they added her to my account. This was post-Patriot Act.

Yodrak

Thanks for sharing Yodrak! Long time no see! Glad to have you back! I don't think I should have a hard time getting Chutima added to my Fidelity account, other than she needs to have a SSN or TID. Once she has her SSN I'll get her added. I haven't checked with my local CU yet, but that's not as important as my Fidelity Brokerage account.

When I tried to add Dao to my account they would not accept her Thai ID Card, Thai Drivers License, Passport, or SS Card. They handed me a sheet which gave me a list of acceptable forms of ID due to the "Patriot Act", one of those are her EAD card, so at the moment that is what we are waiting for. I have read that different banks interpret the Act in different ways.

I tried to add Ton to my bank account yesterday, they said she needed more ID then just her passport and SS card. They said she will accept her Thai ID even though there is no engish on it what so ever. I really have to change banks!!

This is disturbing news! I assume the SS cards you both used already had their new married names? I'm wondering if taking the marriage certificate would also help? I hope some others on the thread will add their personal experiences, because this was something I was planning on doing as soon as we got Chutima's second SSN card, with my last name on it.

Thanks everyone,
I agreed with all your guys opinions and stay quiet. and thanks for all info.

thai2luv,
I am not sure whether DS-156 whith bar code or without bar code. On the website, there are two forms. I tink either one must be good. Can I just down load the printable one without bar code because I can do it on the computer and print it instead of filing out on the internet. Did you file the e-form and file on the internet? Thanks

Sarakong,

You need to fill out the electronic DS-156 on the State Dept. website. The link on the BNK website takes you right to it. It is important you fill out and take the form with the barcode on it to the interview!

Another member had problems because of not taking the correct form.

Ok I have a question. I may have missed this form an earlier day or another post.

My question is given the fact that all of us are trying to the right thing here and going about bringing our finances to the US. How do the rest of you feel about the recent immigration policy and the events in the news?

There was plenty heated debate over on the "Off Topic" forum. You might want to go there and take a look. What I came away from it with was the following: if you start brining up the illegal immigration problem, it will only bring the WHOLE immigration problem to the surface, along with "mail-order-brides", visa fraud, and everything else. When they start throughing out the numbers of Immigrants in the country right now, it makes everyone raise an eye. Best for us to just stay out and continue what we're doing, i.e. "legal immigration", and let the rest of them fight it out. We don't want them to start focusing their attention on people like us as well.
