US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionVisa Fees - The $350 Question

I have an interview at the Bogota embassy now for our K1 visa. The documentation says that we need to pay $350 for Visa Fees before the interview. Our K1 visa is for my fiancee and her 11-year old son. Do we need to pay $350 for each of them (2 X $350 = $700) or do we only pay $350 total, and can you provide a link on the internet supporting your answer?

Thanks mucho

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBogota: Application Fees for Nonimmigrant Visas to Increase
http://bogota.usemba...2_14122007.html

The application fee for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa will increase from US$100 to US$131. This increase allows the Department of State to recover the costs of security and other enhancements to the nonimmigrant visa application process.

Applicants who paid the current US$100 application fee before January 1 will be processed only if they are scheduled and appear for a visa interview before January 31. Applicants who paid the US$100 application fee and appear for visa interviews after January 31, 2008 must pay the difference -- US$31 -- before they will be interviewed.

The Department is required by law to recover the cost of processing nonimmigrant visas through the collection of the visa application fee. Because of new security-related costs, new information technology systems, and inflation, the US$100 application fee is lower than the actual cost of processing nonimmigrant visas. In fact, the US$100 fee was already lower than the cost of processing nonimmigrant visas when the fee was reviewed as a part of the cost of service study in 2004. The Department has been absorbing the additional cost. We are now collecting 10 fingerprints from each applicant, and the cost charged by the FBI to review those fingerprints no longer allows us to do this. The application fee has increased twice since 9/11, the last time in 2002.

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia has already scheduled visa appointments through the end of 2007, thus applicants who have not yet made a visa appointment will be subject to the new fee.

I'm happy to report that we went to the embassy at 7 AM together and they let us go to the bank a few hours later. It appeared that they were accustomed to handling this problem. We paid at the bank with no problem this time. And they granted the visa after talking to my fiancee and to me. I'm going back to Big D. That is, we're going to Big D.

Thanks mucho

That's good news! When the young woman who did not have her Visa fee paid told us her problems, I thought the worst, but she was told that she could pay the fee off-site and then return to pay the amount. I don't know if she was or was not approved eventually, but this shows the procedure is in place to help people who did not have a chance to pay their Visa fee.

Thank you for the suggestion. I almost didn't see it in my quoted passage. We think that is the best idea. We will go to the embassy together at 7 AM and ask for permission to go to the bank and pay the fees. That's why I posted this question here. I needed someone to think outside of the box for me. My mind is stressed out right now.

Thanks mucho

When I was at the Embassy in October, a young woman was there who did not have her visa fee paid and the Embassy told her that she could return to the Embassy with proof of payment of her $131 payment amount. Drink a Ron Medillin after its all over! Buena suerte!!

I'm thinking the best solution is for my fiancee to go to the Bank with her passport and the docs they need while I go to the embassy.

You're going to send your Fiancee to Banco Helm instead of the US Embassy for her Interview at 7 a.m. tomorrow? What have you been drinking???

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionDoes The DS-160 Form Apply To K-1?

Today at Banco Helm somebody mentioned that we needed to fill out Form DS-160. The K1 interview packet said nothing about DS-160. It said we need to fill out DS-156 and DS-156K. Do we need to do the DS-160 also? I don't think so, but I'll do it if necessary.

Thanks mucho

Just carry it with you to the Embassy and there may be a provision for it in the CARPETA they hand your beneficiary. This might be something new???

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBogota Visa Interview Timetable Questions

Does Martha's apartment aka "welovebogota" have hot water for showering? I stayed at an apartment a few years back in Bogota without hot water and it took my breath away how cold that water was! My girl is from Barranquilla so no problem if no hot water there, but damn man, Bogota was freezing cold each time I went there.

The apartment that Leidys and I stayed at in Bogota near the Embassy had one of those high-tech tankless hot water heaters, so the water warmed up within seconds. My wife (who also comes from Barranquilla) did not feel cold once inside of the apartment. Have a great time, and enjoy yourselves.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBogota Visa Interview Timetable Questions

My fiancée lives in Bogotá but I'm glad I saw the hotel recommendations. She lives on the other side of town and the more I think of it, the more I think we will stay in a hotel closer to the embassy the night before. With the appointments starting so early, the last thing we'll want are any taxi/transportation problems.

"hand in your cell phone and other personal electronics as you pass through the guard shack."

I knew that we can't have these inside but they will hold them while we're there? That would be far more convenient than leaving them at home/in the hotel.

You can take these items with you, but they will not be allowed past the airport-style metal detectors. But, with only a 10 minute walk ahead of you back to the welovebogota.com apartment, it won't take you long to return for them. But, I understand when you will want to call friends/family with the good news of your approval.

When you are signing the forms and placing these items in their small plastic baskets, you can send the beneficiary *ahead of you* to grab her folder and to *sign in* for your interview. That way, you will loose less time possibly. Another good idea will be to save two chairs while your beneficiary/fiance is standing in line waiting to sign in/obtain her folder. The seats will fill up fast, and looking for a place to sit is not a pleasant thing to deal with when you are faced with organizing your folder full of items in the same sequential order as your Packet #4. Good luck with everything!

After checking out all of the places recommended here on VJ and several other options as well, we've gone ahead and booked the large bedroom at Martha's for our week in Bogota. Being close to both the embassy & shopping was a big factor, as was being in a better neighborhood than most of the other viable options. Being by far the cheapest option was pretty good too.

Good choice, Dan! I also compared prices (nearly 1 year ago), and the rates charged in Bogota were outrageous! 2/3rds on average more than what I paid in Barranquilla for a hotel room. Equal to prices here in Southern California/Los Angeles. :bonk:

Can I get into a shorter line or a quicker interview since I am a US citizen.

Jump into Line #3 at the US Embassy, but plan on getting there at about 6:15 a.m. Be ready to remove your Belt, have your Appointment letter ready to show officials, and hand in your cell phone and other personal electronics as you pass through the guard shack. Good luck.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBogota Visa Interview Timetable Questions
At the Bogota Embassy, you will most likely stand in line #3 which will be shorter due to the sheer numbers of people seeking tourist visas outnumbering the K-1s, CR-1s, etc. My Fiancee was told we were supposed to stand in line #1, but when the loudspeakers announced what we were to do, we moved quickly to line #3, and I was surprised that people who did not know would try and give us advice on where to stand - #######?!?!

As for WeLoveBogota.com - My wife and I stayed there, and we WALKED to the Embassy in roughly 10 minutes. If you cannot or will not walk, a taxi can drive you to the Embassy area, arriving in about 2-3 minutes. Our interview was also on a Wednesday. We had all of our Medical exams performed that Monday, and the results arrived at the Embassy the following day during business hours. Our K-1 Interview took place at 10 a.m., and we were approved and payed our DIOMESA fee and were outside of the Embassy grounds by 10:45 a.m.

About WeLoveBogota.com, you are close to Plaza Salitre and the Embassy is within walking distance. This eliminated the variable that a taxi or traffic snarls would prevent us from arriving at the Embassy by 6:30 a.m.

When I got there it was apparent the situation was not good, and to make a long story short she passed away on 5/6. Of course there was a funeral to plan and a mountain of other things to handle. We had to cancel the interview, cancel flights, cancel everything because I was in Colorado until 5/21. So now the interview is set for 6/22. It has been an interesting journey no doubt. Francys has been my rock through everything and continues to be my biggest supporter though she is so far. We have become closer and more in love through all these setbacks. We have both been patient knowing our day will come. The crazy thing is that this has been the saddest time of my life losing my mother. We were very close, talked everyday and we had a great relationship. And on the other side it has been the happiest time of my life because of Francys. It has been difficult to find a middle ground. I am looking forward to my trip to Colombia and I hope to report good news soon!
[/quote]
This is similar to my story. My Father and I talked daily about my Wife and life in general. He watched after my dogs when I was in Barranquilla, brought in the mail, added chemicals to the pool, etc. He had been prompting me to send in my I-129F, but I had to wait for the extra money to do so. Just a few weeks before I was able to send in my initial Fiance Visa packet, he took ill and within 13 days lost his fight with Pancreatic Cancer. I tended to my Father throughout his ordeal in the Hospital, answered all questions and talked to him as he began to decline. 1 week after his funeral, I completed and sent in our K-1 Visa package. 9 weeks later, I took my Mother to Barranquilla to meet her future daughter-in-law. This really cheered her up through such a rough period of time. Here are a few pics, amigo!

Can Anyone answer this Question?

My wife from Colombia, had her interview last year for the K-1 on Oct 7, 2010, and and Recieved her K-1 Visa dated Oct 12th 2010. Traveled to the US, on dec 2 2010, and we were married 5 days later.. She recieved her Advance Parole (AP), several weeks ago and is traveling to Colombia this week using her AP.

Her daughter was listed on the K1/K2 and designated as "will follow"... We were told, by the Embassy, we have a year in which we could submit the needed documents to have her daughter here..

So the question is, we're ready to start the process. What do we need to do.. So we simply send the Appointment package to the Embassy? Or do we need to do something more?

Please let us know if anyone has any experience with this. We want also to know, when is the year up? Is it one year from the Interview? or from the Date on the K1 Visa? Then, once she recieves the Visa, how long does she have before she's reuired to enter the US, because, I am guessing that we need to do this prior to Oct 7, 2011 since that will be one year from our Interview date, but her mom and her daughter want to spend christmas in Colombia before her daughter comes her to the US and begin to settle in while waitin to AOS for the daughter...

Also, when do we need to show the fathers permission? We have a verbal Promise from the father that he will allow his daughter to come live in the US with Mom, so do we need the permission at the Interview? or is it only needed when she is ready to leave Colombia...

Many questions, please help...

Thanks

Kenny,

The part about the verbal permission from the Father - Leidys believes that Maritza will need to sit down with the Father of their child at a Notary office and have the paperwork signed in the presence of the Notary in order that everything will be considered legal. Sofia had to proceed without the help of the Father, and with legal assistance, was able to have everything wrapped up without any problems. As you know, Dereck and Sofia took Sofi's daughter to Colombia without any problems using her Green card. If I were you, I would definitely give Sofia a call. She is one of my friends from the Colombia Club II. You can email her, or contact her via Facebook and ask her what she did. Leidys leaves for Barranquilla on June 15th, btw...

Hi all we have are AOS interview on may 11 and i have a few questions on the notice letter it says i need to bring a completed i-693 form unless already submitted. was this something we needed to do after she arrived in the us or has it been done when we did all medical for k1 visa in colombia?

another question is all the documents that the letter says i need to bring i submitted with application do i need to bring same documents again for example i gave them my original marriage certificate and i only have a copy do i need to get another original/

thanks in advance for help

Harold - if you already submitted the paperwork, it will be used for "effect" by the CO-dude who will flip back and forth through your paperwork, TRYING to find something wrong while simultaneously raising everyone's blood pressure in the 8'x10' cubicle/office these people are shoe-horned into. Make sure you have your new paperwork ready, and be ready to deal with someone trying to find fault with your paperwork or your history together. Give me a phone call, and I'll tell you more.

Disappointed......... but keeping the faith

Hi everyone......... :)

I'm sure you have seen this kind of post many times before but I guess I just need to vent my disappoint. We submitted packet 3 documents by fax on March 7th hoping for a interview sometime in April. We could have submitted starting the 3rd week of January, but I was locked into a teaching contract through the 3rd week of March. The reason we waited was because I want to go to Colombia to be with my fiance for the interview process. We were trying to time it out, and after viewing other timelines for the amount of time between submitting packet 3 and a interview date, I thought it would work out in our favor. Well.... I just checked the newly posted April interview dates on the US embassy website and did not see our case number. Needless to say we are very disappointed. I was poised and ready in my own mind that I would be going to Colombia sometime in April. Especially since my fiance's mother, who is getting married, was waiting to know our interview date so she could schedule her wedding while I was there. The only thing I can think of is that the embassy is busier now and we have to wait longer. Or our documents never arrived by fax, though we have fax confirmation receipts that says the transmission went through. I wrote the emabassy so maybe they will respond.

Ok...... I feel a little better.... Thanks for reading my post, and most of all thanks for all your past advice.

Disaapointed in San Diego........ :hehe:

I would have thought that 2 months from your NOA2 would have been your Interview, provided that you emailed/faxed your Packet 3. I think the important part is that you are planning on attending your Fiance's Interview. Good luck!

Hi how are you???

What we did was that, my husband waiting to get his shots with the doctor he had to go through with immagration. we were going to have him get all the shots in his hometown since he didnt really have much record of all the shots he has had, and thankgod we waited for the doctor in Bogota she only had him take 3 shots. so from our experience i would say wait until your finacee goes to the doctor in bogota before the interview to see what shots they ask for its better and safer that way. GOOD LUCK!!

Are you talking about an AOS interview or an ROC interview?

AOS seems a bit too early to start asking for joint accounts considering you can't "join" them until the immigrant spouse has the GC (in some cases.)

I only ask because I've been trying to add my wife to my accounts for a month now but she's had a problem getting her SSN issued and we haven't been able to do squat. In other words, she's on none of the household accounts yet. The only proof that she has of even living at our house is a couple of letters mailed to the house from the SSA and if they fail to get her SS card to her before her 75th day post-POE, they won't issue it until she has her GC.

On the plus side. we do have plenty of pictures taken together! Posted Image

Dan,

When our case was transferred to CSC, I thought the same thing...that we had bypassed the interview process. Unfortunately, 2 months after the transfer we received a letter informing us that an interview had been scheduled for March 22nd. I don't know the reason for the interview or how you can tell if you will be required to attend an interview. I hope to findout the reason at our interview. All that I can say is be prepared. I don't want to panic anyone, but I have heard that some interviews can be very extensive. Questions like...where does your spouse keep his/her underwear, etc. So, just be prepared.

Mark

Mark,

Be sure to read the list of instructions line by line related to your upcoming instructions. Both Petitioner and Beneficiary will be required to attend. Be sure to have a bank statement with your spouses name on the account and lots of other proof of a continuing relationship. Good luck,

-Ken

Or, is it at the airline check-in counter?

After they key your info into the Ticketing Computer, you will be told about taxes that you have to pay for the airport. Just like Kenny says, the ticketing counter personnel will tell you exactly what you need to pay.
