I would suggest if she drives, a driver's license first then SSN, but order doesn't matter, be prepared for a long wait at SS if your experience is anything like ours.

Actually SSN is requisite for a DL, so the order does matter. Correct spelling on the visa application would solve the problem, with an additional paper explaining that the passport office screwed up the spelling. The Embassy and POE should have no problem accepting that.

And all the sudden over internet this hottie msgs you out of blue, because she wants a GOOD MARRIAGE? Maybe If I was born yesterday I'd be like "Sure its possible", but I wasnt. Define good mariage to me? And no there is no other way to determine their authenticity. Either its a scam or you have something terrific to offer to the lady trying to find "good marriage"

Just ask yourself this question - "why on earth would this hot girl ever want to date or marry me when she can do so much better?" If you can't come up with a good answer, it's a scam.

That about sums it up, gotto be realistic about these things.

So if a girl is hot, she's automatically out of the running? blink.gif You know, hot girls want a good marriage just as much as plain girls. I think it's unfair to discriminate them - after all, the fact that they're hot is not quite their fault, is it?

There must be more intelligent ways to determine authenticity. Like.. um... writing letters for a while and watching out for red flags OTHER than her looks?

Yes, I know such people too (and those who adjusted from tourist visas, too). But I asked a different question. If H-1 is dual intent, does it mean you can ENTER the U.S. on it with obvious immigration intent? And still adjust without problem?

If the OP's friend gets married shortly after re-entry, she'll will have a hard time proving she had no intent to marry and adjust status before she re-entered.

Any thoughts or experiences with this situation? Will she get in for her interview?

I would not worry overmuch; there will be a bunch of people for 8:30 appointments and she can get in with them. Plus, once the K1-s and K3-s are inside the embassy they have to wait for >2 hours, so I'm sure your wife will have plenty of waiting time left.

I had a similar experience with AO Meditsina - they saw something suspicious on my X-ray and directed me to the central TB clinic for more evaluation. I spend the whole next day there and ended up paying 4000 roubles for immediate CAT scan only to find out that it was nothing more than a dilated blood vessel. On the next day, I dropped the evaluation form back at AOM and on the following Monday, I received my packet.

We can of course suppose that it was their money-making machine at work but I think they are really just making sure there are no medical problems.

I was lucky to have scheduled the medical a week before the interview date.

But, you're going to be hard pressed to find an S/O from the FSU that agrees with me because she's still going to want someone to pamper her into feeling better.

I generally agree and was raised in the same principle by my very Spartan, no-nonsense father. However, with all our self-sufficiency and tough upbringing, the trick is not to overlook those 10% of "sicknesses" that are non-conspicuous but still dangerous and could cause serious consequences. I did overlook one, when I was 23 and started getting very slight symptoms, but kept thinking sports and fresh air can cure everything and there's no reason to run to doctors. The cost of my arrogance: a year spent in hospitals and a huge ugly scar across my neck.

Now I listen to myself and pamper whenever possible, for fear of overlooking important things.

I am simply applying the same rules to both Ossetia and Chechnya. And before we rehash it again - Kosovo was a multinational action called for by the UN, much different than one counrty unilaterally marching into another and saying "this is ours now".

If you must compare S.Ossettia and Chechnya, please recall how Chechen leaders behaved towards its Russian population since Chechnya declared independence. Ethnic cleansings and terrorism as a matter of fact, just because they could. Also recall how Chechen terrorists trained by their Islamic "colleagues" in the Middle East invaded Dagestan and bombed Russian apartment buildings before the start of the second Chechen war.

But S. Ossettia, as well as Abkhasia, are an altogether different story - Russia never claimed them as its own land. Please quote where Russia ever said "this is ours now"? Russian troops in the region are strictly peacekeapers to prevent the killing of local folks by the Georgian military. And the killing has been going on continuously throughout the past 15 years. Would you justify leaving a 80,000-people republic to the mercy of a brute who sneaks into small towns and kills peacekeeping troops and innocent folks, and then complains to the West that Russia was the one who started the invasion? He is a hypocrite and a tyrant and toppling him would be only beneficial; however Russia has no such plans so far, nothing beyond pushing him out of S.Ossettia and restoring peace.

Brad,
You are very wrong in supposing that "some posters"' Russian nationality has any bearing on the conclusions we draw from the available information. Trust me, I am very far from endorsing all Russia's politics by default and have no problem admitting Russia's mistakes when they are being made. But in this case the situation is completely different.

On the other hand, just because Russia has stronger military than Georgia and is well able to keep Saakashvili in check, does not automatically mean that Russia is the aggressor and the invader in this conflict. S. Ossettia is NOT part of Georgia, as it has declared independence in 1992 and effectively formed an independent state. Georgia wants it back, but does it mean Georgia has "the right to occupy its neighbors, or annex their territory" ©?

I cannot say if it was genocide or not, but killing 1400 people in a surprise attack, just after the announcement of a truce, is definitely not a civilized thing to do. Killing hundreds of civilians is even less so. Mind that the total population of S. Ossettia is 80,000 (was before the Georgian attack). Most of them are Russian citizens.

If Ossettia is strictly Georgian affair, then Kosovo should have been strictly Serbian affair and USA should have stayed out as well. South Ossettia, as well as Abkhasia, were made part of Georgia at the onset of the Soviet Union. After it broke down, they declared independence from Georgia by democratic referendums. Since Georgia would not let them be, Russia kept peacekeapers in the region. This whole skirmish started with killing a few Russian peacekeeping troops by Georgian forces. GEORGIA started it!!! Before responding, Russia addressed the UN and asked for a note of protest against Georgia. And of course now Saakashvili, seeing that his ### is about to be kicked, complains to the "leaders of the West" and labels Russia "aggressor". You guys really should not let him get away with this - though he's been kissing up to the U.S., it should be clear by now what this man really is.

The idea of her driving without me would still scare me to death. Yesterday she flew through a red light. She has a hard time with intersections that are three way stops. She misses stop signs sometimes and can't find her way anywhere. We were a block from home the other day and she did not know where she was. She confuses left and right. I think she could very easily turn onto a 4 lane divided highway pulling in the wrong way and find herself driving against traffic. The bad part is I think she could pass her test if I let her take it.

As I remember from my own learning experience many years ago - as soon as you start driving independently, without someone sitting next to you and constantly telling you what to do and what not to do, your level of attention, awareness and ability to figure out things increases dramatically. Having a worried instructor at your side is a very distracting and unnerving thing, however kind and patient this instructor might be.

Just relax and let her drive. She'll improve, you'll see.

That confuses me too. Technically, it's illegal to get a license in Russia without knowing how to drive stick shift.

I've driven stick for a month while studied for my license in 2000, on an antediluvian kopeika, then passed the driving test and immediately started driving an automatic shift. Later bought my own car with an AT which was quite handy in Moscow traffic jams. To drive stick again, I'd have to at least spend a few days remembering how to do it.

BTW, I noticed here in Raleigh DMV, they offer learner's books in Spanish but they don't have any in English. What's the official language in this country?!!

Very risky to do the medical a day prior to interview. They might find some reason for additional tests, as it happened in my case, and that would extend the waiting time. However, you can still go to your scheduled interview and they may approve your visa pending your medical results.
