PhilippinesIn love with a girl in the Philippines.

Long story short...I'm in love. :D

My girl is trying to come over to Arizona in the US first to visit, and then after as a permanent citizen of the us once we're married. She's living in Cebu City

For the step of the travel passport/visa, what is required, and how long does it take to get one for her, and I would like to know the cost of getting one?

I have heard that Americans stick out like a sore thumb, and are targeted daily for kidnappings and ransom and murdered over there...If I go over for a visit in the philippines myself, should I be worried for me life?

Also, She has a little 2 year old girl, that she would be bringing as well ^^

I visited my wife two times during our courtship. First time was to Cebu and a side trip to Bohol. Bohol before the storms was beautiful. The 200 plus yo churches were breathtaking for me. Now many are in shambles due to the storms.  Lots to do in Cebu. It's a medium size city which makes it easy to get around. Manila on the other hand reminded me of NYC.  I felt comfortable in Cebu as a white Kano. I would get up at the crack of dawn and go to the street markets near Magellan's Cross.  The locals would take care of me and remind me about the pick pocketers and known trouble makers. I carried an expensive camera with me but made sure that it was wrapped around my wrist and that it could not be jerked out of my hands.

The only problem we encountered was when I was getting into a trike and my wife was to follow, she was wearing a gold necklace that some guy tried to rip from her neck. She was so quick that she felt it and grabbed for it and was able to keep it with only the clasp getting broken.

Second trip I went to her home town of Ozamiz City on Mindanao.  Great little city. I felt safe but I always watched around me including my back. It's easy to do, just stop to look at something and use your peripheral vision to look around. Just don't be a loud mouth, flashy or wear jewelry or show your money.  I let my wife carry the money and pay for our purchases as she knows the cost of things and what to stay away from.

Being there for the visa interview is a real experience, one that I will never forget. As the consulate is Manila we were able to see many tourist things around the hotel before I soon departed. Museums, shopping malls and Rizal Park was some of the places we visited.

Go and visit her, you'll get a better idea what her culture is and how you will merge yours with hers.  I would some day like to call the Philippines my second "home".

PhilippinesIn love with a girl in the Philippines.

I go with Hank's advice.  Don't even try to get her a tourist visa.  Her chance of getting it is remote at best.  My former fiance (from Russia) got one, but she owned two apartments in Ekaterinburg, one of which was her residence and the other was a rent producing investment.  She had a good job there.  And her asserted reason for coming here was immersion in an English speaking environment (her profession was Russian-English interpreter).  AND she was able to call in favors with the US consulate because the marriage agency she worked for as an interpreter knew people there.

Despite all of this, she still had substantial odds to beat to get the visa, but she gambled and won.

Does your girlfriend have any of these factors going for her?  You get my point.  If you try it and fail, that will be a visa denial, which is not a good thing when one applies for the K-1 or CR-1 as the case may be.

Do it the right way.  Go there and meet her.  You don't even need a visa as long as you leave within 21 days.  Then file for the K-1 or CR-1 for her when you get home.

Is it dangerous?  Well, I am from New York, and I was in Manila, so I can tell you that it is not much different than New York in that department.  Just like New York, it has its nice areas and its not so nice areas.  Your gf should know where to not go, and that is where you don't go, just like I can tell you what areas of New York you don't want to go to.

Good luck to you, and have a nice trip.

About a year ago they changed the visa stay from 21 days to 30 days, and of course that can be extended if the OP request an extension.

PhilippinesTo hire an Immigration attorney or not for filing AOS

... and to get back on track ... the BS.   The below is not fact, it is hearsay, rumor and plain old BS, those processing AOS should ignore this:

"They've changed the rules on the medical, it must be current, within 12 months, when they adjudicate your AOS. Its no longer the rule to be current when your apply to AOS."

The statement has me confused. Are you saying that the medical must be current when applying for AOS not when it is adjudicated?

is it worth the penny to hire someone? Will that speed up the process?  Ive been thinking filing AOS is more complicated than that of filing the k1 application..

There is no need to hire an attorney to do your AOS. All the documentation is contained in the cover letter below. Gather and complete each point, read the AOS section on VJ. This was our cover letter with documents and we passed with no interview or RFE's.

Cebu has RUSH orders on hold I wonder if it is system wide .

I started a thread a few days ago that the system was down and they had just gotten it back up and running but there was a back log. Funny thing is they said they would work day and night and holidays to clear the back log. Yeah, right!! A government agency working past 3:00 pm.

Yes I did but it did seem site specific since it showed a map . Above the response is it takes 15 days in Cebu .

Here is some information for the CEBU location. I would recommend that you either email them or call them on the phone to ask your questions. All forms and document requirements are the same whether you go to Cebu or Manila or some other location in your providence.

  • The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is at the Pacific Mall in Mandaue City, Cebu.
  • DFA Cebu is open from Monday to Friday 9 AM-6 PM and Saturday 9 AM-3 PM. If you have questions, you can call them at (032) 520-5898 and (032) 520-6193. You may also contact them via email at cebu.rco@dfa.gov.ph or dfacebu@yahoo.com.
  • You can get an application form from the DFA security guard.

Well we did find out the answer. She cannot get medical results until she has new passport . What's the quickest one can be obtained? I have heard rush order is 15 working days. But here in the states normal processing they say can be 4-6 weeks and it is usually 2.

Did you take the time to read and fully understand the links that others have posted? The fastest passport processing is 7 days with additional fees.

My fiancée is going for her medical Monday morning in Manila . When she was in Cebu at the airport they mention that the very top part of her passport had gotten wet and that the letters for the country are slightly smeared .....you can still read it but it us smeared some. Everything else on the passport is ok .....picture, all personal information and bar coding .

So is this going to be a problem for the medical or at the interview in 2 weeks ? NO. If it is how soon can a new passport be obtained in the Philippines? It will take 2-4 weeks depending on what office you use to secure your new passport. For best option, proceed to the Office of Consular Affairs (DFA-Aseana), the nearest Satellite Office (if residing in Metro Manila), or the nearest Regional Consular Office (if residing outside of Metro Manila),?

You question is hard to answer as it depends on the immigration officer that will process your documents. I have heard and read where many travel through without a problem with slight damages to their passport. Even a women who had a damage photo and she left and entered the Philippines without a problem on three different occasions. Your description of your passport would lead me to believe that you shouldn't have a problem. Keep in mind that after you leave and get married you probably will change your passport to your new married name so having to pay twice is something for you to think about.

In my opinion, I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to your question about getting a new passport.

If you passport was produced in 2010, there are reports of substandard passports and DFA will replace them. See article http://globalnation....-issued-in-2010

In case of mutilated or damaged passports:
  • Submit Notarized Affidavit of Mutilation (with detailed explanation on when, where and how passport got mutilated or damaged)
  • Original and photocopy of first and last page of mutilated or damaged passport

At this point in time you should just back off. You have been a good friend to him and now you need to leave it to him. You know as well as others he will have that "I told so" moment at which time he may wake up and understand how others tried to help. There isn't much more you can say or do. We all hope this works out for him but doubt still lingers.

Philippinesscared fiance failed medical xray problem

I went to the Philippines to new with my fiancee for her medical and interview. there was a problem on her xray . now she does the sputum test. I'm concerned for her in case it's positive also concerned that if she has it I May go back and infect my family. She says as far as she knows noone in her family has had t b and she says she never had the symptoms. Are there many who end up being negative at 2 months? She's been crying and it is breaking my heart

I'm sorry to hear your finance is facing some medical issues with her visa journey. TB is a real issue in the Philippines. The good thing is that it can be cured but not without committing 6 more months to her journey. Chances of you contracting TB for the short period of time you were there was minimal. TB is an airborne contaminate and the possibility of contacting it from her is through breathing air from her cough or sneeze or inhaling her breath. Kissing does not spread the disease.

No one can say with fact how many have contracted this disease or who are negative after 2 months. This is something you will need to follow up with SLEC and if positive to complete the process to cure her of the disease.  Once she is cured (assuming that she does have TB) then she can continue the visa process.

Do a search, using the search engine found in the upper right hand corner of this page and you can read some history from others who have gone before you and you'll get a better handle on what you are facing.  Good luck.

PhilippinesAnnulment query fast and less expensive process in Manila
When we were contemplating an annulment my wife went to her local court house and befriended someone there and asked some questions. Not to take up her time she found out when her brake was and if she could bring some treats for her and her friends. It was a small price to pay for inside information. They were happy to help.

You want to know who has the best success, who is reasonably priced, who works well with their clients and who can do the annulment in a reasonable time frame.

Good luck.

It would take everything someone had to hold me back from becoming unglued if that every happened to me. That is down and out thievery and it's not just one company but they all do it. PhilippinesRenew Passport & Report Marriage same time

People. They are not going to throw you in Jail if you are missing a document. Go to the interview, meeting, fire side chat or whatever and show your receipts and explain your situation. You should always have copies of your important documents, so, bring them with you and explain to the human on the other side of the desk from you what you have done. I can tell you, your not going to be the first person that ever did what you did. Believe me they have seen just about everything. Even the excuse that the dog ate my passport.

Hello All,

I just noticed that the passport renewal requirements regarding renewal with married name change requires a report of marriage doc....but we are doing this in the same visit.

Can this be done? Passport Renewal using the married name? Do we just go to the report of marriage window first and then do the passport?

We can't be the first people to do it this way and calling the embassy is essentially pointless, I either get VMs with no return calls or precorded messages about info I already know.

We have all other required documents.

THANKS!

It's Government at its finest. Some Philippine Embassy's will allow you to do both at the same time and others require the ROM be completed first and when it has been registered or on its way to Manila for filing then you are allowed to do the passport renewal step. Check with your Embassy as details are on their websites. Wash. D.C. requires the ROM first then the passport can be changed but you can't do both at the same time. This is from personal experience.

PhilippinesSSN name change

Hi,

I applied for my SSN before getting married and received it on the mail a week after. Went in again to the SS office after marriage to have the name updated
to my marriage name. It's been 2 weeks and I haven't received it. My concern is, do they assign you a different SSN after marriage? Or do they retain your old
one and just update it with your married name?

Thanks mucho!

If you do not receive your new card in another week I would contact SS by phone and inquire if there are any issues preventing them from issuing your new card.

I was thinking maybe 'Administrative Review' could be one that could still happen...

There are many horror threads about the visa process BUT along with those are many who have had nothing but smooth sailing. No one can explain why, for those who have had the problems. As I read your thread, what comes to my mind is maybe you are just over reacting and causing yourself undue stress. Most of us have walked that "mile" and believe us when we say, it looks like your visa will arrive shortly. Stop stressing and start packing and thinking about your next steps.

Good luck. God's speed. Safe travels. Congratulations!!

Hi - I'm new here and excited to join this Forum.

I am hoping to find someone with experience getting a marriage license in the Philippines. My fiance is 24 and has her parent's approval. We are having a civil ceremony. My fiance's mom says we will need to go to some type of class but she does not know the requirements. The US Embassy and Philippine Gvt sites do not mention anything but I found the following on a Philippine Bridal website:

"You and your husband-to-be will also be required by the civil registrar to attend a city-required family planning seminar. You can check your municipality for the schedule. Such seminars are usually given in the city hall. After the seminar, you will be given a certificate of attendance, which you will present when you claim your marriage license. "

Is this correct?

Thank you!

She will be required to have her parents permission in writing. Use this form:

Those at least 21 but below 25 years of age are required to obtain parent's advice to the marriage. http://www.quezoncity.gov.ph/images/stories/downloadables/forms/parentadvice.pdf

Of course blood tests turn out negative. Now working on my AOS packet again.

I don't know if you knew what shots you needed but for argument sake let's say you did. You could have gone to the nearest Walgreens, Target or any Doc in the box and only paid $15 to $25 for the flue shot. The other shots you could have gone to your county medical/human services where they would have given you the remainder shots at a reduced rate. To transcribed your DS-3025 and add from your receipts the shots you had, you should not have paid anymore than $75 to the CS. So in the end you may have saved as much as 50% of what you spent on the huckster CS.

There are many threads that talk about what to watch out for when choosing a CS to transcribe your records.

When we were going through the process my wife created a large binder to keep all her records in and neatly organized. Hence when she or we had an interview we would bring this with us and remove the documents that we thought were needed based on websites and instructions. BUT, in case they asked for more, we would reach into the binder and remove the additional requested document(s), which stopped any future delays, We never encountered the "I left that document at home, hotel or wherever, now what do I do?"

Our 221g (japanese police clearance)took 15 days to process.

 Unfortunately our response wasn't favorable.

After the 15 days we received a second 221g.  The medical clearance had expired.  So Sharon has to redo her medical exam.  So she did go through St. Luke's TB treatment from her original medical exam.  After finishing DOT that clearance was only good for 3 months.  So in the process of waiting for a interview, obtaining police clearance (221g), and USEM administrative processing her original medical clearance has expired.

Now he has another 221g.  This one says she was to go and retrieve her passport from USEM and then resubmit a medical from SLEC.  I'm guessing she'll probably have to do the sputum exam and wait again since she did have positive xrays and receive treatment.

Oh boy.  this sucks

Oh my. You just can't get a break. It's easy for me to say to you to stay positive but I'm not the one who is getting kicked at every turn. I hope it gets easier soon for you guys.

PhilippinesManila 221g processing times. (Anyone else waiting like me?)

my fiancee has the paper they gave her, dont know if its a 221, i check every day, updates once a week, says administrative processing, i even flew back to manila to ask whats going on???? couldnt even speak to a consular

Well I think the first thing you need to do is get a copy of the 221(g) or the "paper they gave her" and read the details. Then follow the directions of the 221(g) or the paper to solve the problem. I am dismayed you haven't done that. If you need help, there are many here that can help but we need "more information" then "the paper".

PhilippinesAfter Case number assigned

One caveat to Hank's instructions some have been asked from the bank for their passport when making the payment. I suggest you bring it along in case it is needed. Otherwise, follow Hank's handy dandy guide and you will sail through the process with little or no problems.

PhilippinesNBI clearance issue (maybe?)

I need to backtrack here. You will not get a letter from NBI on your own accord. What I meant to say is to go to NBI and try and figure out what your in the Data Base for. Once you know that you will have a head start in collecting your proof of innocence for when the request goes to the NBI which in turn will help with the letter of explanation.  Don't leave something in the hands of a Government worker to solve, take ownership and do it yourself.

Case in point. My wife had some dismissed court cases some 10 years ago. NBI only had a few of the cases noted that they were dismissed but others were still "open". She immediately began the research at her local court and was able to get all the documentation to prove that her cases were satisfied with a dismissal. She went to the Manila NBI office and presented the documentation and the letter (221g) was sent over to USEM, answered to the CO's satisfaction, and her visa was issued one week later.
