except the USPS is a federal governement sponsored agency

Yup I know, but when you have to register one place, put your name in your mail box in another - obviously all of the employees or offices don't have exact specifications. That's all I was suggesting smile.gif

CanadaI give up!!!
We have cards on the inside of our mailbox here at our apartment complex. They put our last name on the card when we moved in, and I added my maiden name to make sure. Not all places do this, but it may be a good idea like E suggested.

If you happen to need something and you're close to Raleigh, give me and Bo a call! We would be more than happy to help you and your little one out!!

Aww Jenni that's so sweet! Had I known I would have! Nice to meet another Canadian VJr...we pulled off I95 at some place called 'Wilson' NC? Something like that. Then had to drive 30 mins West to Raleigh...it's really nice there!

I notice you just had ur bio appmt, how did it go? That was a quick turn around from the time you filed? Did they tell you that you just wait now? Good luck, hopefully it goes fast!!!!

Bo drives around all the time for work (Geek Squad hehe), and I think I know where Wilson is..Raleigh is a nice city though, confusing when you're driving sometimes smile.gif

I did have my bio appointment last Tuesday. I was there all of 10 mins - really easy...fingerprints, picture and a small form to fill out. Crazy thing is, they were the NICEST people! I didn't know USCIS hired nice people lol smile.gif If I get an interview though, I'm not sure if they do them here in Raleigh or if I have to go to Charlotte. I got the letter for the appointment about a week after they received and entered all my AOS papers, and the interview was 3 weeks from the letter. Decent enough turn around. My file was touched Wednesday so I assume they have my fingerprints and such now.

Now I wait...again...lol...at least I'm learning patience through this whole process I suppose eh? smile.gif

Be careful driving, Nevada! CanadaRe-establishing Your Girlie Connections..
Hey Poprocks!

LOL hubby was reading over my shoulder and was like "there is an Ulta right down the complex from work" - so now I must go tongue.gif

I don't know much about nails, I've had them done once..I do my own usually. I can feel your pain about the hairdresser, though I went a couple months ago for a trim and found a really nice woman about my age at JC Penny that did a great job - her husband is an immigrant too, so we had a huge chat about how annoying the whole thing was. I need to get it colored this time and I'm nervous, my good friend was my hair dresser in Canada for 4 years, and she was awesome...she also only charged me the cost of Dye *sigh* I haven't paid full price since University lol.

On the friends side of thing, I feel like I was pretty lucky. Hubby is a district tech and trainer for Best buy, and he knows a lot of people at the store closest to us. He introduced me to people on each of my visits down. When I moved here, we actually changed apartment complexes 2 weeks after my arrival and now two of the women that I met and got along with are about a 1 min walk away. We've clicked pretty well, and though it's not at the level of my friends at home, it feels nice to know I have people to talk to. There is a group of 4 of us that do girls nights, dinners and stuff, and then we all bring our husbands/boyfriends (and a few other couples) and have game night once a week and big BBQs once a month or so. I've gotten to know them quite well because of these things.

I have a few friends that I feel I'm drifting apart from as well...which sucks and I try to keep in touch, but it doesnt seem like something they want to keep up with sad.gif It's hard to come to the realization that someone doesn't think you're as important anymore...*sigh* but my best friends are still there...we talk every few weeks...I miss them and I wish I could have them around more often...

I'm sure you will do great though smile.gif you seem to have an outgoing personality and though you may not find a kindred spirit for awhile (no one has come close to being where my best friends are yet), some ladies you can let your hair down around is great in the meantime smile.gif

I've gained some weight since I moved to the US.. 7 months ago. I kept talking about wanting to lose weight. I finally decided to start eating healthier 2 weeks ago and have lost 6 pounds so far.

I just loveeeeeeee the yummy Southern food that we have here and Sweet Tea is sooo good!!! But I knew that what I was eating and drinking and when I ate and drink them, was not good for me. So, I've cut out all sweet tea and soda and only drink water. I try to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. I make sure that I eat a healthy breakfast and try not to eat after 7pm.

I also try to go for a 30 minute walk every day.

Ah Southern food...

Sweet Tea and fried chicken are now the bane of my existance tongue.gif *shakes fist at their horrible deliciousness*

I need a major detox soon though..I have IBS, so I have to make sure I keep up my water and fibers to keep my tummy and other 'stuffs' in good working order...which is not the case at the moment. Does anyone have a good cleanse recipe?

The grocery order next week after the wedding will be huge and a lot of things Bo will whine about, but he loves me and I'll make him eat it. I'd like to lose about 15 lbs too before our honeymoon (early summer) and the 2nd larger wedding at home. There is a gym here at our apt complex, which is a 2 min walk away, and we border on a lake with walking trails smile.gif And a WiiFit is one of our wedding gifts coming next week LOL.

CanadaWoman under 26 and Gardisil requirement?
QUOTE (lancer1655 @ Jul 8 2009, 01:10 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
In my opinion, I'd shop around and see if you can find a civil who will mark it "not suitable" because you are nursing.

We were very slow with the vaccination record to the point where we went to a CS the week before the interview to get the HPV shot only to find they were out. So we went to the interview and even after it expected an RFE for the record with the HPV shot on it. We were approved without it.

Btw all the older woman on here are very lucky that the drug lobby didn't win the 30's age recommendation a few months back.

Unfortunatly in Canada, we cannot 'shop around' for our Civil surgeons - there are 3 in the whole country, and it is a Canadian requirement that people under 26 get Gardisil - all the doctors are all going to say the same thing :S

Great thread!
Our song is In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel.

It's a song I've loved for years...and it just fit so well.
It was the first song we ever danced to.....alone in his bedroom.
We danced to it on our wedding night.
It has such a special meaning to us.
Nick and I are celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary in August and we are getting our wedding bands engraved with "It's in your eyes 8.2.08"

<3

I LOVE that song Laura - it was one of the others we danced to at our wedding...

Our song is "No One" by Alisha Keys smile.gif Suited our situation perfectly. Everytime we hear it he nudges me and kisses me, or we still grab hands or something <3

And my 'get-through-the-months-of-waiting' song was "One Step at a Time" by Jorden Sparks...seemed fitting a lot of the time

So....heatwise, July and August are going to kill me. We can get such high humidity it feels as though you're walking through clouds. At least growing up in the maritimes I know what a bit of humidity feels like smile.gif

I think that's what I used. I figured I was giving them the copy of it so if it was wrong, they could find it for themselves, haha. Hope that doesn't backfire on me!

I just send my AOS today. Took me a good week to put it all together and check it over a few times before sending. Hopefully I didn't miss anything. I hope it processes fast, although with summer vacation starting I'm not holding my breath! I just want to be able to work by October and go home for Thanksgiving.... here's hoping!!

Sapphire - If you just sent it, you will have the AP and EAD by August I bet. They are SUPER speedy on these! I was just issued my EAD so Im waiting for it in the mail, and the AP I got on Friday. So, I would be amazed if it took longer than September to have everything. smile.gif The trick is, as soon as you get your biometrics appt letter, go get them done. You don't have to wait for the actual appt date and I think that is what sped me up.

Even if you do wait for the date, it doesn't hold it up too much but you could speed it up a couple days smile.gif I had to just because of hubby's work schedule, but my AOS was received May 1st, biometrics June 2nd, I recieved my AP on the 20th and my EAD yesterday smile.gif they are going quickly, I am sure you will be able to work by the end of the summer smile.gif

QUOTE (Carlawarla @ May 22 2009, 04:55 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I think we need more information. I'm not employed, and haven't been looking for work so I'm the last person that could give you any information, but your question is very general. Yes, some experiences could give you ideas, but it might take a load off your mind if you could tell us where you're going to be living in the US and what area of work you're looking for, what education you have, and even what mode of transportation you'll have.

Good point! To specify:

+I'll be living in Seattle proper.

+I currently work a government job up here in Vancouver that deals with report-writing, investigations, accounts payables, and previously, employee benefits.

+I have a Bachelor's in Criminology from Simon Fraser. I had originally wanted to go into some form of law enforcement (prior to even meeting my husband), but my only goal now is to see how an SFU degree will fare in Seattle's job market.

+I will be taking my car with me when I move over to Seattle.

One thing I find an advantage is that I don't get too optimistic to the point where I'm delusional. When people ask "So what kinda work do you think you'll be doing down there?", I usually respond with:

"Making candles in a factory owned by Pottery Barn."

The scary thing is, I think that is aiming high these days.

I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I read that a Canadian living in Washington somewhere, still crosses the border to go to work. That may be an option for you.

But as Canadians, don't forget, we CAN receive EI for the first 90 days after crossing the border, and again with the EAD. Check out the EI thread!! You can't imagine how good that feels!! biggrin.gif

Copy of Car Insurance
Copy of Power bill
Copy of Apartment lease
Copy of bank statement with both our names
Copy of Health Insurance card

All the above things he KEPT at the interview, so make sure it's not the original

Also, bring all communications between you and USCIS - NOA1, NOA2, interview letter (obviously)

I had taken pictures, he looked at 10 of them, but he did look at the invitation, the paper clipping of the wedding annoucement (kept a copy of that as well I think) and some of our wedding cards.

We had copies of Bo's W2's and paystubs, but he really only asked Bo for verbal confirmation of where he worked, what his position was and how long he had been there.

They asked when, where we met, he was surprised as he hadn't had a "WoW" couple yet and asked if there were many couples that had met this way. We laughed and told him about all the couples here on VJ that are WoWers smile.gif He did have a D&D couple a few months back (said he pegged them as D&D'ers as soon as they came in his office - something about their clothing I think)

Like I have said before, and Carla as well, the interview is fairly quick. They will ask you questions to make sure the information on your paperwork was correct (they make it up with a red pen), ask your SO some questions pertaining to how you met, work stuff and thats about it. I was just the silly one that forgot to get the I693 and had to wait the extra month tongue.gif

Hope this helps a bit, lemme know if there's anything else smile.gif

Looks good!! But wow, you're going to be carrying around a lot of paper laughing.gif

I think maybe, since your fiance is going to be there, you might want to consider bringing less evidence. Chances are they won't ask, and even if they do, having a couple months of phone bills instead of 2 years worth would probably be sufficient.... My interpretation of it, is that they mostly want to see evidence of an ongoing relationship after you filed the original petition, someone can correct me if I'm wrong. My plan is to being like 4 months worth of phone bills, boarding passes from the trips we've taken after filing the I-129F (since they have copies of itineraries from 2005 until then) and then pictures (like 25, which i thought was a lot!) and some wedding planning stuff, just in case the subject comes up. But It definitely doesn't hurt to have more then what you'd need! So if that makes you feel more comfortable then go with it.

I wish you luck! You seem very prepared, I can't imagine anything going wrong smile.gif

I agree - they didnt ask to see ANY of my evidence, only asked questions about the pics I had sent with the initial I-129F pack, and I didn't have my fiance with me either...so you should be good smile.gif

CanadaThe Vent - Part 2
QUOTE (Ontarkie @ Jul 17 2009, 10:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
One of my best friends just called crying again, andI hate how I can only tell my friend so much and not get thru to her. My friend and her daughter live in NB in an appartment above her parents. Now her parents have pretty much controled her entire life, they ruined her marriage to a great guy (they didn't like him), and till this day they pretty much still control her. They wanted to move from Sault Ste Marie to NB (her parents). They convinced her to move with her daughter.

She also gave up custody of her son at 2yrs cause her parents convinced her she could'nt handle him. He's with his dad. She hasn't seen him i think in like 6 yrs.

Her mother is an drunk and her dad well he should be in jail, I wont get into that.

I've been telling her for years to grow up and take charge of her own life. . Her daughter and her are both on attidepresents and getting worse. She is slow and has been treated like a retard by her parents for ever. They run her life she is not that dum, she can do things on her own, she wants to get away and move back to the Sault where she has friends and is able to do things on her own.

Her parents moved to and area that she is totaly dependant on them. She doesn't drive and has lots of health issues. It drives me nuts I can't help her, Ive told her to pack up and get on a bus and just go, but she doesnt want to leave all her stuff or pets. She has a friend she can stay with till she gets disability transfered for an appartment, but she can't get any help from disability in NB. They don't have any type of moving allowence from what she has been told.

So anyways I figured I would vent in here and also see if anyone has any ideals how she can get moved with little money any type of help I can find her would help. I was thinking a womens shelter if things got worse, but I don't know if they would help her move that far. I know she probably would never move but I have to keep trying to give her options and just maybe when her lease is up this time she will go. All I can do is be there when she is ready to go and hope it will be soon.

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

I used to work in a Women's Shelter in New Brunswick and I would highly recommend you telling your friend to call and talk to someone. I know that each shelter does have it's own set of criteria to allow admittance, but they would be able to tell her. It sounds like it is emotional abuse from her parents and I know that that would have satisified criteria at the shelter that I worked at. We would aid women in relocating and setting them up with basic items such as dishes, clothes, bedding and toiletries. If nothing else, the workers would be able to give her other ideas, she would have someone to talk her problems through and she could go to the house for a visit and speak to the workers in person. Some of the houses also have outreach programs, so she may be able to have someone come to her and talk to her, maybe make a plan of action.
I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions smile.gif

And some people never accept it or they just keep bouncing back between acceptance and bargaining.

My mom keeps offering me jobs to move back to Canada, they are literally trying to create a really good paying job for me. That's great for me but what about my husband he is doing so well here.

Oh this isn't a vent but my husband is about to be promoted to associate partner at his design firm. biggrin.gif

So proud of him!

That's awesome Sprailenes! Good for him biggrin.gif good.gif
