CanadaWhat's your favorite restaurant in USA ?
Hmmm...

Fast food - Bojangles, CHIK FIL A *mmm chicken and pickles*, Ruckas Pizza here in Raleigh is amazing, Wingzone Wings

Breakfast - Brudebakers Bagels is yummy or there is a little cafe downtown that I can't remember the name of...homemade breakfast sandwiches to die for though smile.gif

Pub - Carolina Alehouse! They have other beer besides the American staples too..and I'm a beer girl smile.gif

Eat Out - Crazy Fire (Mongolian food - choose what you want in it, they do it up on a huuuuge grill), Jack Astors has great Salmon and I love their Loaded Potatos. Carrabba's too. Longhorn Steakhouse we went to in Portland Maine was really great too.

I've only had cheesecake from the Cheesecake factory so far - Banana cream *drool*. Now I want to eat there! I've heard so many good things!

CanadaThe Vent
I'm having a royally shite day..

Called DoS again...STILL nothing...I know people have waited a lot longer for interviews, i'm just cranky..

But my main vent is about UPS...

So when I was down in September, I took my engagement ring to the jewellry store to have it checked for problems. It had to be done 6 months afterthe purchase, and it was needed to keep the lifetime warrenty active on the ring. The woman noticed that the diamond was loose in the setting, so she said she had to send it away to the crafter to get it tightened. SHe said it would be at least a week. So I had to leave before it was done. Bo was going to send it up (insured of course) when he sent me the papers I need for the interview. So he went in today and the worker said that he needed additional paperwork because the ring was over 3,000$. He asked what he needed...and she didnt know. So her supervisor told her to call UPS in Canada to see what the requirements were...

They said
"Nope, you can't send it at all"

Uhh...pardon?

"Nothing with a value over 500.00$ can be sent to Canada"

####### IS THIS #######?!

I've known people to send their rings halfway across the world, but these idiots wont let it cross the Canadian border?!

I want my ring sad.gif I have no idea when I will be down there, we are too broke to travel before the move...(ie not able to spend Xmas together - whole 'nother vent entirely).

Alright, 'm good for now.

Which university? My parents met at St. Mary's. Dad was Mom's tutor for a few math courses. Then he swept her off her feet and off to Bermuda.

Since Mom was the youngest of ten, I've got loads of family in Nova Scotia. I spent most of my summers in Dartmouth, Truro and Oxford.

Born: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Raised: Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia's TRUE masterpiece) smile.gif

Interesting facts about Lr. Sackville: Uh, this is gonna be hard. James Sheppard of the Minnesota Wild is from there. So is nutjob stand-up comedian Nikki Payne. The guy who invented the process of making paper from wood pulp is from Middle Sackville.

Oh, the first season of "Trailer Park Boys" was filmed in Lr. Sackville.

I tell people I'm from Halifax. It's much easier.

Also lived in Ottawa, ON (which I absolutely hated), Toronto, ON (for a summer, people work too much in Toronto) and Calgary, AB (which I absolutely loved.)

Woot, Sackvegas!!

I was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia as well, and raised to age 12 in Lower Sackville. My grandparents are still there actually. 12 Years old and my family up and moved to Miramichi, New Brunswick. Some facts about the good ol' 'Chi smile.gif

-Some of the best Salmon fishing in the world
-We have a HUGE German population in the summer - they own a lot of cottages
- We have Canada's largest Irish festival every summer
-We were a pulp and paper city, with REPAP being the largest mill (before it was taken over and shut down), but we made the paper for Playboy and Time Magi zines biggrin.gif

CanadaSSN before Wedding??

Some states say they require it, but like others have mentioned, there will be people that do not live in the US that want to get married, so they should have a way around having the SSN -like North Carolina and the waiver. I had asked the women at the register of deeds about it, as the waiver really didn't fit my situation (the waiver said I was not a citizen of the US, but rather somewhere else, and that I was not eligible for an SSN - which I was). She said they just needed it for the license, and that it would in no way affect actually getting my SSN.

I'm glad too...I applied for my SSN a little under 4 weeks into my arrival (after I had done the wedding license smile.gif ) and the woman at the SSN office said that USCIS hadn't put my information in the system yet, so I would not be getting my card for another 4-6 weeks! That would have screwed over my wedding plans eh? smile.gif

QUOTE (Rob and Mel @ Feb 10 2009, 12:43 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Mel and I met while playing an MMO (Not WoW). It was called ROSE, similar basic premise, howerver much more primitive graphics and more "Anime" themed. We were friends for about two years. We talked all the time and would email each other at least a dozen times each day while at work. The first time we talked, was on a Ventrillo server..... and I was a huge a$$hole. I believe I made fun of her accent. It took me like 8 months more of MSN and emails to get her to talk to me again on Ventrillo.

Anyways, we were both in relationships so the thought of romance never crossed either of our minds. First my relationship disintegrated, and then hers did. We helped each other through it and then, I started to subconcsiously flirt with her. We started talking on the phone a lot more, and then in the beginning of March 2007, we decided that we should meet in person. So, Mel booked a plane ticket to come see me...... in June. After about a week, we both were far to impatient to wait that long, so I booked a ticket to go up to London, ON at the end of April. It was love at first site. I do have to admit, the long distance thing is really hard to do, but It's well worth it in my case. We play WoW now as a means to spend time with each other. I'm a gnome warlock, and she's a shamen.

To funny, my fiance and I met online playing WOW as well. He is a NE Warrios and I am a Shaman. We weren't previosuly in the same guild but since WOLTK we are now. We met one day when my friend was running my alt through ZF and he tells me there is this sorry looking hunter standing at the entrace do you mind if we take him along? I said sure thing, turns out this sorry hunter was just an alt too and we have hit it off everyday since! Glad to know we aren't the only online nerds out there! Now the question is, date night does it consist of 25 man naxx and malygos?!?! Because ours sure does LOL!

Bo and I are another WoW couple. We had been in the same guild for awhile, but my bf at the time was also in the guild. When things soured and ended between us, Bo was there to listen to me vent and get me through a rough time. We started calling each other in October 07 (we had to be in vent for raids, hard to be personal LOL) and I came down for the first time a year ago.

WoW is the first game I ever played seriously. My brother and dad are huge CompGeeks, but it was my ex that got me to try Wow...I always thought things happened for a reason smile.gif

I have a BE hunter and he is a BE rogue...we have other alts, but those are the ones we met on smile.gif

When I went to my interview in Montreal, the lad that interviewed me asked how we met, and I told him an online game. He asked which one, and when I told him he said "you know, I think I'm going to start a running tally - you must be the 20 person this year to have met in that game....Maybe I should get on there to meet a lovely lady!" yes.gif

QUOTE (SonoranSongbird @ Mar 23 2009, 04:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yes, he should file a change of address form with the post office. He also needs to give USCIS his new address (is it form AR-11?---I am not sure of the procedure for that since it wasn't something we needed to deal with). If for some reason the NOA1 goes to the apartment he is leaving and is NOT forwarded, I am pretty sure you can get a duplicate from USCIS. (Okay, I'm not 100% certain of this---I do know you can get a duplicate of your NOA2 from them, so I assume it is also possible to get a duplicate NOA1).

You could get the NOA1 either before or after the check clears.

I think it is AR-11 until your information is in the system. Once you get your case number and can sign up on the website to track the petition process, you can change the address right online....actually, make sure you can't do that now...there is a chance you can. I know the AR-11 is for when you are still dealing with USCIS, but do not have an application pending (ie me where I haven't sent out my AOS yet, but I will be soon - still dealing with them, but forms are not on file yet)

Haven't gotten NOA1 yet, which is part of why I'm impatient for the cheque to get cashed. My fiancé HAS to move. Like, now. (His flatmates were smoking certain illicit substances that are a bit more of a problem than pot last night, won't go into details, but they could have killed him since he's severely allergic) And I'm concerned that we're gonna miss getting our NOA1 by a day or two because he's trying to be moved out by this weekend at the latest. And I didn't think you could get NOA1 until after the cheque was cashed.

Does the US have a way that you can have your post redirected, like CanadaPost does? Cause after he runs out of the apartment (he's afraid that they might become violent if he tells them he's leaving), he doesn't want them getting his mail.

Yup, USPS has mail forwarding, he can do it right online and they will start doing it whichever date he puts down smile.gif We moved two weeks after i got here, and I was waiting for stuff from canada, so we did it and started it from the day I applied - worked out well smile.gif

This song always makes me feel melancholy:

Comin' Home-City&Colour

Well I've been down to Georgia,
I've seen the streets in the west,
I've driven down the 90,
Oh hell, I've seen America's best.
I've been through the Rockies,
Hell, I've seen Saskatoon,
I've driven down the Highway 1
Just hopin' that I'd see you soon.

Cuz I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home (x6)

Well I've never been to Alaska,
But I can tell you this;
I've been to Lincoln, Nebraska
And hell you know it ain't worth ######.
I've been through Nova Scotia,
Sydney to Halifax,
But I'll never take any pictures
Cuz I'll know I'll just be right back.

Cuz I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home (x6)

Well I've seen a palace in London,
I've seen a castle in Wales,
But I'd rather wake up beside you
And breathe that old familiar smell.
I never thought you could leave me,
I figured I was the one,
But I understand your sadness,
So I guess I should just hold my tongue.

But I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home (x6)

I know that we're taking chances,
You told me life was a risk,
I just have one last question;
Will it be my heart
Or will it be his?

Comin' home,
I'm comin' home (x6)

I Love this song <3 Dallas is wonderful and this song makes me homesick for Halifax and the Harbour....

CanadaGhost Hunters
Hmm, my family are all believers, I think we've all had something happen to us. There are a couple I'll mention though:

I worked at a group home in Miramichi for teens that were in the care of the province or on "breaks" from their families. The house was in the country and it was quite old. They told me when I started that the older man who used to own it haunted it because he had built it himself, and he would watch out for the house. I think he stuck around because sometimes the kids would tear the place up (holes in the walls, broken windows etc) and he would get cranky. Anyway. I didnt really believe it until one night I was working an overnight shift after a very bad day with the kids. My shift partner had dozed off, but I was awake,(on the 2nd floor). I heard the kitchen screen and metal door open (I had dead bolted both), and I heard someone pacing the hall at the bottom of the stairs. I was scared it was an actual person, so I woke my partner up and we went down. The door was still locked, but there were wettish footprints in the hall by the stairs. It was freezing as well, but nothing had been moved or taken. I think he just wanted to see how bad the house was torn up

The other one was an experience my grandfather had. When my uncle was smal;, my grandfather would tell him stories, not always from books, sometimes just making them up. One night when my uncle was about 4 years old, my grandfather asked him to tell the story that night. My uncle started telling the story of a solider (my grandfather was in the army in the 2nd WW), but then my uncle started mentioning names of other soldiers, the place they were in Germany, and described in detail a bad day in the trenches where there had been the fatalities due to German bombs - as one of the soldiers who had served with my grandfather and died in battle. My grandfather couldn't say anything, because there was no way my uncle would know this. It was a touching experience for him though, and even when he told me the story, he teared up. More of a reincarnation than ghost thing, but fairly spooky none the less.

CanadaI hate snow =(
I have been LOVING the weather here biggrin.gif I left New Brunswick on Feb 3rd with 6 ft of snow on the ground..

We've had the AC on for about a month here.

Don't get me wrong, it can get very chilly here, a few days of 0C and under, and it feels colder too because it's SO humid here. We actually had 2 inches of snow fall the week before our wedding! But mother nature must have known that my family was coming from a place of ice and snow because the week they were here it was between 15-25 celius smile.gif Our wedding day it was sunny and 24.

I love it though because everything is in full bloom and green here already. We've been getting a ton of rain, but it's just sped up the growing. I can't remember the last time I saw a full blown spring from the actual first day!

The summer will be a huge adjustment. It can get hot, and although I have lived next to the Atlantic all my life, I've never experienced humidity like they have here in the summer! Thank goodness for an aunt and uncle with a lakehouse, and grandparents right on the beach biggrin.gif

CanadaWhat do you do?
I was a "Timmie Ho" back in the days of high school and some University. I also worked tourism during the summer on the Halifax waterfront 2 years of my University time. I loved that job - got to meet a lot of people from so many places, was right on the water, got free boat trips through out sister company! We also got the American cruise ships in a lot, so I met a lot of Americans before I met mine <3

I graduated with my B.A in Criminology. I was going to be an RCMP officer - had been my dream forever. While I was training for the physical portion, I worked at a group home for youth 11-18. The kids were either placed there by Social Services, their own parents or were actual wards of the province. A lot of these kids had addictions, broken homes, psychological issues, and it was a very trying job at times, but I did get through to a few of them. After I left, they found me on facebook and I still talk to them when I can. So I was there for 2 years...

For a 2 years before I moved down here, I worked at a Women's Shelter. Residential, so it was shift work (same as group home), I was the house tech/designer as well (my dad has been working in various computer professions for 30 years- I was bound to pick a bit of it up)...any paperwork that needed to get done, any advertising or materials we needed - that was me. I had to man a 24-hrs crisis line and provide in-house support for our clients living there. I met women in so many different situations, of different backgrounds. It was wonderful working with them and helping them get their life back. It is so rewarding to get a hug, or a card from a woman that you know really appreciates the help you've offered. smile.gif

I hope to eventually get into my field again down here. I would love to be a cop here in Raleigh (though the thought of it makes Bo very nervous), but anything within a department would be great. I'm not sure if I would do residential again - it takes a lot out of you, but I would love to get involved with any programs that help women - not necessarily abused solely smile.gif

But once we have our wedding certificate and before I get the GC, could I go to the SSN office and ask for a new SSN card with my new name just for bank, phone stuff? It still will have the work conditions things i guess. And then in the AOS papers, I will also ask for a new one so i can have the work conditions removed

They won't change the name on your SSN card until you have your greencard in your married name. They go by the name that is in your passport, and that is on your Visa when you enter - it is a solid form of ID, and your marriage cert isn't. Once you have a GC, that is the level of validity that they need to change your name. The lady explained it to me when I was getting mine. It was the same when I was put on my husbands bank account - I had my marriage cert with me, but he said my card would be put in the name on the visa and in the passport until I can produce my green card.

Hope that helps smile.gif

All the states are so different, it was good of you to look into it good.gif

except the USPS is a federal governement sponsored agency

Yup I know, but when you have to register one place, put your name in your mail box in another - obviously all of the employees or offices don't have exact specifications. That's all I was suggesting smile.gif
