CanadaQuestion - Marriage Before Starting the Immigration Process
1 wants to ensure you get the marriage license back asap! Reading this forum--it appears people getting married in ONTARIO---it can take many months. I know in VA, I did not require a SSN # and we got the paperwork back in a few days, then started the process ( I soon went back to Canada, and visited DC Monthly)

CanadaUS citizen visiting Canada without a passport
Yes, i'm sure 1 would eventually get back into the USA...BUT at my Naturalization ceremony the head honcho that ran the ceremony stated numerous times the certificate did not act as a passport in any manner and would not allow you entry into the USA on it, and stressed to get a passport!! I think my passport arrived in less than 3 weeks back in 2009

CanadaEI Questions

Wait, so you can quit your job in Canada, immigrate to US, and file for EI without being laid off? Am I understanding this correctly?

YES--but one can NOT quite to far in advance...and one stil has to have enough qualifying hours. Huge forum at the top. Cr-1/Ir-1 are elgible right away...k1 not until they get their EAD---but one stil has to apply right away when you cross into the USA and get everything endorsed (activated)

Thanks, I've already found that site before asking on here, I'm just concerned about my Canadian PR husband and whether EI applies to him.

Easiest thing to do is just call them

Could be a few days to a week or so...........If you were born or stayed in a country that is not on good terms with the USA....It may take much longer

Example would be Calgary airport, correct?

yep, pre-clear in Calgary. Most big cities one does pre-clear. Off the top of my head--Saskatoon is one of the few where you do NOT

1 should ALWAYS bring ties to Canada with you. Many of us have visited and never had a problem, and yes a few do get denied (but very few) A denial is not a big deal--being barred is--never lie. My 2 cents is down below. As well do a search--as this question is probably in the top 3 asked here in the Canada forum

Canadawhen did u give up your CDN residency?

What form are you talking about? What am I missing here?

I havent followed ur whole story...but as a Permanent resident of the USA (greencard) one is expected to spend the majority of the time in the USA. If one wants to move back to Canada or another country for an extended amount of time, there is a form one should submit. I can't recall the form #---Doesn't pertain to me as I have dual citizenship. 6 months one should be fine, but a POE officer may see it differently.

I know BC last yr was starting to crack down on people that are no longer a resident of BC. One may want to contact OHIP and see what they have to say. When do they cut you off OHIP--the moment ur a non-resident of Canada?
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2012-10-12 21:08:00
Canadawhen did u give up your CDN residency?

It is only illegal if I come back to Canada just to get medical intention. If I do come back to Ontario and reside here for 6 months, I am entitled to get the benefits again.

Make sure you do things the correct way--as you can loose your greencard(when u get to that stage)--forget the form one should fill out when leaving for a certain amount of time---and a POE officer can see it the way he wants to.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2012-10-12 20:40:00
Canadawhen did u give up your CDN residency?

I'm not notifying OHIP because I have the old red/white card with no expiry, I will not use it unless I do come back to Canada for 6 months or more.

I am not notifying the DMV because I am going to use my Ontario Driver's License in the US until I can get an Ohio Driver's License.

But, I would like to know how to cancel the HST checks because I don't want to owe anybody money. I am just going to get my mom to file for me since all my papers will get sent to her house anyways. Will she just not check those as the things I am entitled for? Is there anything else special that she will have to claim on my income tax? How will it work with all my tuition overage? Will it carry on into the future years, or will I lose it? I've given my parents any extra I can every year. Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong spot..

I do believe once you come to the USA, your no entitled to OHIP--doesnt matter if ur card has an expirary date or not--its fraud

Canadawhen did u give up your CDN residency?
I crossed over to the USA in My U-haul van on Dec 17 2004. When i filled out my Cdn taxes for 2004, right on the first page of the tax return it asks the date one ceased to be a Cdn resident. I jotted down Dec 17. Never did file NR 73--I actually called them up and the said it was not a "must" so why bother with more useless paperwork! lol When I got my VA drivers license, they kept my Nova Scotia license! And as a non-resident of canada, ur not entitled to health care. If you have RRSP's you can leave them in canada, but notify the company that is looking after them and tel them that ur a non-resident of canada, belive there is a form u have to fil out. As well u have to let the IRS know u have them, and thats form 8891. IRS wont tax you on them as long as u dont touch them, but some States will tax you on them!

CanadaCanadian Police Certificate
For MTl--they are valid for 1 year. Personally I would contact the police agency one is going to use--and see how long they take to produce the document! It truly is normally a simple document to get! And ensure they check ALL names that you have used (if married before, changed ur name)
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-04-09 18:22:00
CanadaCanadian Police Certificate
All depends where you are in Canada--each police station varies--but normally it is 1 of the easiest documents to get.

NO criminal history = NO fingerprinting required

CanadaRenewing Canadian passport in Canada while visiting

I just had a minor heart attack and answered my own question.
I remember when my husband had his passport expedited in 2009, it only cost him less than $120.
It looks like in order to get him a new 10 year passport in 2014 while living outside the us, we could be looking at 235 to 260 bucks.
An extra hundred just to send the thing back to the US?! That's so crazy.

no its more $$$$ as the CDn passport is now 10 yrs vice 5 yrs (when it comes into effect)I belive one will still have the option of having it valid for 5 yrs (at the lower $$$)

Isn't that what the green card is for, entering the US? She can renew her passport from the US as well.

One can apply for it from the USA as well.

Again at the top, there are reviews of consulates! 99% chance your question has been asked, so dont be afraid to use the search feature...and of course we are friendly, so ask away as well. in my opinion, and it ain't worth much, they (POE duded) have no clue if you have relationship visa (k1, k3, cr-1) in the works!! There system isnt updated with that info, BUT when they interview you, it can be added and tracked!! Thats just my opnion and have no way to factually back that up! Lot of the Police systems don't even talk to each other!! USA seems to be lacking in that kind of communication set up!!

my advice for people going to the usa while the process is ongoing, I did it monthly to DC for 6 months:

) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3)keep ur response short and to the point, dont tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5)pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isnt going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didnt lie! Refer to #1

Hard to say what they know and even a retired POE official wouldn't say for sure, lol Sort of on another subject, one would think all LAw enforecement woul dhave a computer that is centrally tied together for ease of passing info, but they do not (according to news articles) so who knows if immigration has centrally located records that POE officials can see if people have a visa in process or not

CanadaSpouse is US Citizen/Student, options for me to join her?

Nope as she is a USA citizen.  But your ahead of the game as your looking into it now. Many don't bother to look until they need to move and then go into panic mode!!  The process is not that difficult, just one needs to be patient!  Some finish around 6 months, others take a year!  Keep in mind once you get the interview and visa package--one has 6 months to  get it endorsed at the Poe (port of entry).  And there are other ways you can slow it down--if you need to.  Best of luck

CanadaI-751 evidence - worried!

I believe in Quality over quantity!  Some send piles and piles of stuff--do you really think they are going to look over all of that?  Maybe if one was from a High fraud country.  If your listed on any of the insurance paperwork (cars, house, insurance) include that. Utility Bills. I did not send much.  Whats going to happen--they send a RFE and I send in more, lol  But thats just me!!

CanadaMontreal expedite visa retrieval?

1 can always ask...if you do not ask...answer is already no.  But there are NO guarantees how fast the Visa pkg will actually leave the Consulate!  yes some do get them very fast, while others do not. And then throw in that there is always the chance of further background checks for some.

CanadaBruins Vs. Maple Leafs

I know I can't say much,as my Flames suck, but I realize that.  I'm over the moon happy Toronto Lost!!  I really detest them!  Being from Sask---back when there was only 1 game on a Saturday night on CBC--guess which (crappy) team we usually got stuck watching-The Toronto game!!  lol   I just had a feeling Boston was going to come back and tie it up! Something in the air--or possibly the rum/coke I was drinking!!  Riemer played well, and most of the games were exciting to watch!

Pens/Sens game about to start!  Fleury remains on the bench, and as long as Vokoun keeps playing well, I'm guessing that is where he will stay!  I like the Pens, they are a fun team to watch. Hopefully the Sens goalie remains hot!!  Off on a cruise for nearly 2 weeks--no playoffs to watch!!  Knew I should not let my wife pick out the dates, lol

Canadaclosing bank accounts?credit cards?

I closed everything--except my Presidents choice bank acct-0--and if PC knows ur leaving, they want to close ur acct--so I just use my parents addy in Stoon.   Opened up my wallet and anythign that I could close I did--even including movie store rental places (not like they exist now, lol)

If you have RRSP, one has to notify whoever holds them in Canada that you are moving--they sent me a form to fill out (keep in mind this was back in 2004)  And one has to notify the IRS each year if you still have RRSP (form 8891)

CanadaCashing Canadian Bank Checks In The US

Some can offer a good exchange rate, than hit you with fees. Others my not charge any fee, BUT give a less than stellar rate!  If its for a large sum of $$$, it is best to check around!  I had huge hassles depositing Cdn cheques into Wachovia back in 2005.  1 branch would put a hold on it, some stated they would only accept a Cdn cheque if it was over $200, it was crazy--and it was the same BANK outfit, just a different branch!  Luckily I found a branch that had a good bank manager and a competent teller and would only take my cheques to her--if she was not their, I walked out--because everyone else would screw it up!  Thats when I started using CustomHouse!!  Just mailed my cheques back to my parents and they deposited the $$$ in my bank!  But CH was bough tout by Western Union and I don't think they offer it as a free service anymore, and they exchange rate is not as good as it once was

And now 1 has other routes--TD and RBC, but I have never used them, so can't comment.  But when you check the bank of Canada Exchange rate----I don't believe your going to get that rate--the banks are here to make $$$$$

Thanks everyone, for your replies. These all sound so positive and promising. I've read some horror stories, so I'm now happy to read these. I'll think about trying.
THANK-YOU.

Lot of the horror stories are from people that are NOT prepared---and some just get rude!! Guess what happens when you get rude with a POE officer---your not going to win,lol And yes some POE officers are clueless, lol But I lot of what they base their decision on is how you handle yourself--body language and being respectful
