CanadaWhen did you quit your jobs ?

It normally is a slam dunk unless----You were born in a Country that is not on good terms with the USA--or visited 1 for an extended amount of time.  Criminal record, and now throw in the Govt shut down!  Yes the Embassies/Consulates are operating normally, but there is no guarantees of that, if the shut down continues for a longer period of time.

CanadaTransfering case to Vancouver? How? Help :)

Yes it would be an issue....One has to be residing in Manitoba and west to goto Vancouver.  I guess you could email Vancouver and see if they would accept it, if Mtl was willing to tx it, but thats prob not likely--as many people would be willing to do it.  U can always ask.

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-10-07 16:18:00
CanadaHas the shutdown affected you now that you live in the US?

People here at the Embassies are still working and I believe not getting paid...I believe they will when the govt is back in business.  The govt does not do what is in the best interest of the people, they do what is best for them.  Pretty much been that way for centuries.  Always the wealthy in power, just do enough to keep the middle class and lower happy so they don't revolt!!

CanadaHas the shutdown affected you now that you live in the US?

The USA system is set up to fail!!  Neither party wants the other party to do well--and benefit from it!  No consequences for the politicians as majority are very wealthy and still getting paid!

CanadaAutomatic application for SSN

I know at 1 time, even if u had checked the box for it--majority of time the SSN never arrived. Wait approx 10-14 Business days and then with an already filled out application you obtain from http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/  head down to ur local office (along with the required ID)--so when they say, nope ur not in the system---u hand over the already filled out form--And I imagine the Govt shutdown is affecting things right now as well.  http://ssa.gov/shutdown/

Canadaproving domicile while not in US or Canada

No in Canada both partners are not required or even hinted at to show up.  And no most of Candian Vj'ers do not have the USA citizen residing with them in Canada.  If she has maintained residence in the USA, it should not be too hard to prove, if they do ask

CanadaMontreal and NVC Questions

As a cr-1//IR-1 1 can work right away!  Once you go through the POE and get the I-551 stamp endorsed (som e say activated, lol)  you are good to go, that acts as ur green card, until the actual card arrives.  Of course some employers may not want to hire you until the SSN arrives. I know a few of posted on here they got a job before the SSN arrived--but they did not get paid until they had the SSN.   And keep in mind--even though u checked the box to get the SSN--it may not arrive. They recommend you wait 10 business days and if no SSN--head down to ur local SSN office and make an inquiry-----highly recommend u download and fil out the form ahead of time (and bring the proper ID) so if they say no, ur not in the system, u can hand over the already filled form..  Does not concern u (hopefully, lol) but with the govt shut down---they are currently not issuing new SSN #'s!!

CanadaHow long it will take to issue visa and getting passport back?

Unfortunately, that is not good advice. There are congressmen in the house, and congressmen in the senate
However I saw in another thread someone mention you should contact your state senior senator.

Well there you go. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just not the one needing the info. Some just sity and wait and wait.... squeaky wheel gets the grease. You as a American citizen should know ur govt better than me, and know who to contact.

CanadaHow long it will take to issue visa and getting passport back?

Gotchya. So given that my husband and I have clean backgrounds and were born in the US and Canada, we shouldn't have this issue. I'll keep hoping for that.

As long as you have your ducks in a row, nopers!! And by chance they do....don't wait too long...get ur USA spouse to contact his congress person and have them make an inquiry!

CanadaHow long it will take to issue visa and getting passport back?

I don't think I like the idea of additional or administrative processing.
What causes this?

Could just be a random thing......Person was born in another country that doesn't get along so great with the USA. Criminal background.....Thats why one should never make concrete plans until ya have the package in your hands!

And its not as if as soon as it gets to a desk they are simply going to mail it out ASAP---well it could happen, lol But the past as shown a very slow turn around! Do the trip--then mail it in!! And if its taking forever---get the USA spouse to contact his congress person. best of luck

CanadaHow long to process 221 (g) in MTL

Over 100 views and only 1 reply...Are we the only ones who have ever got a 221g from MTL.??

Because there really is no answer-----Mtl tends to be slow at everything. Some people it only takes a few weeks after they mail the required info in....others it takes a month or so. More or less it boils down to----don't make any plans until you have the visa/passport back!! If you do a search, there is a # 1 can call to find out its status. And some USA citizens contact their congress person to check its status, etc etc

CanadaMarried and staying in our own countries - possible?

Al comes down to the POE officer!!  I have a cousin who I told years ago about VJ and she has never started the greencard process...She travels to the USA (and back) very often, has never had a problem!  Got married little over a year ago, same thing back and forth not a problem.  6 months ago, had a baby, and she still travels back and forth (without the husband) with no problems!  Some people never get questioned, while others do!

We did the long distance relationship for almost 3 yrs--1 year of that married, and never had a problem crossing.  But thats just us. Other people get stopped on their very 1st attempt. odds are in ur favor, especially being older and still having ties to ur own country. My 2 cents is down below in my signature. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

CanadaGot section 221g'd

As long as you just got charged with a DUI, you should be able to enter the USA......Now if you were an american trying to enter Canada and had a DUI, then probably not as Canada a bit more stricter!  Ensure u have strong ties to canada.

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-10-26 16:06:00
CanadaGot section 221g'd

Montreal is just going to go by the evidence on what they were provided.  You plead guilty to the charge, so as you stated earlier, they go by the guidelines..............

CanadaGot section 221g'd

if you do a Search on VJ--such as DUI Canada(play with the wording, leave out canada, etc etc)--there are a few others in a similar situation.  Could be worse, could have killed somebody and been in jail for the next few yrs.  I couldn't find the guy that went through a similar situation, but that was a few yrs ago now, maybe 4 or so------  so it may not be relevant now anyways

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-10-25 16:01:00
CanadaGot section 221g'd

Yes I believe its just a questionnaire that u fill out--you can google it and you find many similar ones!  As you should be aware by now--nothing happens fast at MTL, so one can probbaly expect the waiver process to go in a similar fashion. But maybe you will get lucky!  of course it can't start until you hand them the paperwork.

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-10-25 15:26:00
CanadaGot section 221g'd

Get on the phone and try and find a new dr, which I know is hard to do, but if you explain the situation, they may realize your not going to be a long term customer, so they may squeeze you in. the one guy I recall took well over a year to get it completed. Most of that time I think was it just sitting at the embassy!

CanadaCR-1 endless questions

I've gotten mixed info on this, as to whether Canadians can spend up to six months at a time or six months out of a year as a maximum. Does anyone have a link to some sort of government page that would have this info?

I don't have a link (sorry) but this question on another forum gets asked all the time! (http://www.canuckabroad.com/forums/) and what was stated there (and yes really means nothing,lol--but I recall seeing a link at 1 time) Was that it "resets" after each time one returns to canada, BUT like I stated, if they think ur spending more time in the USA than Canada, they can deny you entry. And keep in Mind as a Cdn Citizen once your out of the country for over 6 months, you can loose health care benefits (that varies from province to province on how that is handled.

And a USA POE officer can limit ones stay,if they do they write it down..if they do not write anythign down, a Cdn can stay up to 6 months
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-01-04 18:40:00
CanadaCR-1 endless questions
No real answer----As you found out--it comes down to the POE officer! Technically every-time one returns to Canada, the clock is re-set--BUT if they think your spending too much time in the USA--they can deny one entry into the USA. Ensure she has prrof of ties to Canada--ie return ticket, letter from employer, lease, utility bills. Majority of us have done the long distance relationship, it sucks, but could be worse

CanadaCanadian Spouse OK for Extended Visit to the USA?

So if I take a new job in the US and bring him back to the US with me to watch my son, what sorts of documents should I have him bring with him to the border crossing? Thank you!

If it was me---I would not be traveling together..thats just me!! Watching ones son is prob not going to be valid reason for a POE officer to let him in! When he VISITS, he should have return airfare, letter from employer, bills, immigration paperwork, lease--stuff that in the eyes of a POE officer is proof that he is going to return.

Sometimes the POE officers ask very few questions--some ask more---I always had proof with me, but never had to show it. My longest visit was prob around 3 weeks!

And keep in mind a Cdn can stay up to 6 months--but the POE officer can make it for much shorter. And one should have aplan in case he does get denied entry! A denial is no big deal---but he makes a scene at the POE, or lies, and then it can turn into a ban, which is not a good thing! My 2 cents is down below in my signature
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-01-03 19:41:00
CanadaCanadian Spouse OK for Extended Visit to the USA?
CDN--Cr-1//Ir-1 have VISITED their spouses with no problems! We did monthly. The longer one wants to stay, the better the odds one could be denied entry---really up to the POE officer. Was one CDN VJ this past week that went with the intention of staying for 6 months and the POE officer let them in! Really all boils down to the POE officer and how you handle yourself! He should bring proof of ties to Canada with him when he crosses.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-01-03 19:00:00
CanadaSo we DO NOT need to send more evidence?

Is that it? Truly? Nothing about house or mortgage or bills or anything to prove anything else? Just SHOW UP?

I was just referring what it takes for the USA citizen to come inside with the cdn!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-01-07 17:58:00
CanadaSo we DO NOT need to send more evidence?

Hello fellow Canuckers...

I'm writing this here in our little country forum because this is specific to our process.

There are many posts about adding MORE evidence to the NVC package before submitting it. Is it really NOT necessary for us to do so?

I have also read that USCIS often doesn't even send the evidence we initially sent to NVC. Obviously we would bring a copy to the interview but do you feel we need to add to it between now and then?

My next questions is if my USC husband is able to attend the interview with me, what should he bring with him, if anything?

Thanks all!

His Passport to gain Entry!!

hey there, I do have a question...you noted that you were leaving vancouver to fly to montreal...are you from vancouver? and if so, why is your interview in montreal?!! i'm from northern BC, and was assuming my interview would be in vancouver, but based on this post, your interview isnt near where you are from?!!

Which Visa route are you going??? if its k1, yes it will be to Vancouver, but if it is a CR-1/Ir-1 then you and every other person in Canada going that route got Montreal

CanadaPicking Visa Up
As well keep in mind.....Not sure on the exact %%%%....but it seems fo rmany the SSN does not arrive, even if you checked off the proper box on the form.....if thats the case, one has to head to your local SSN office and inquire......Best to download the form at http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/ and take ur Cdn passport and birth cert..so when they say your not in the system, you hand over the already filled out form.

CanadaPicking Visa Up

I said what I was trying to accomplish. I want to hit the border immediately (since montreal is like 45 mins from NY) and continue working until all of my paperwork is received by my wife in FL. I'm not that close to the border in AB.

This is why I would like to know if they have the option of you picking your package up. If they don't then whatever, but if they do have that option, it might be beneficial.

I also wanted to know if I could "activate" it and stay in Canada for a couple of month while that paperwork (SSN and plastic GC) is sent to my address in FL. Sometimes it takes only a couple of weeks, sometimes it takes a couple of months. I just don't want to stay in Canada over a time limit and risk giving up my GC after it is issued because I waited in Canada too long.

Is it an option?? No not a true option (can't just check the box). You can ask and they can say yes or no. Some are successful some are not. If you do not ask, the answer is already no. But if your reason is just to hurry up the process, the answer is most likely going to be no. But you can always ask

After you get the Visa endorsed, and you head back to Canada, a few months is no problem. if its going to be 6 months or more, there is a form (forget the name of it) that one has to fill out.

And if you are from a country (or lived in one) that i snot friendly with the USA, it may be awhile before you get the visa!
