OMG, Flames9, you still post!!! smile.png

BTW, I did the same thing. Never filed anything official, just noted the date on my taxes.

I'm pretty lame, what can I say,lol

CanadaWhen to sever residential ties to Canada?

Never filled out the NR73 as it is 1 of those forms you "can" fill out, but it is not a "must"  Everyone has their own opinion on that. Dude I talked to at Canada Revenue told me that.  I departed Canada in Dec 2004.  So in the Spring of 2005 when I was doing my Cdn taxes, it asks right on the 1st page of the tax forms when you became or ceased to be a Cdn Resident--I plopped down Dec 17 2004. Simple as that!  And for fun I applied for the GST rebate--even though I made to much $$. I got a letter from Revenue Canada stating because I was no longer a resident of Canada, I was no longer able to claim the GST rebate.

Canadaif you could have the same job, same salary, would you choose Canada or the US?

I think it all depends who are around you and where you live.  Growing up in the Prairies, slower pace of life and people are much friendlier on the most part--that prob goes for both countries!  Knew a Toronto guy in DC and he was the biggest jerk I knew, lol    Love Rhode Island, will be spending a few months there this Spring/Summer

Would be back in a flash, but its probably never going to happen. Just very fortunate to have an understanding wife who allows me to go back often!!  3 weeks to Sask. lol

CanadaMoving to the states on a K1

Well from Cranbrook, BC to Kansas CIty, that's close to 25 hours of driving. Unless uhaul ships it themselves, i don't know that we'd use them haha.

See for me--I would love that drive!!  Back in 2011, for vacation (wife was working, lol) me and the dog packed up the CRV and drove from DC to Saskatoon.  Then we drove to Kamloops and Calgary!  Lot of miles, but enjoyable, at least for me!

You can check out the Uhaul rates online.  Others have used those companies that drop off a "pod" you pack it urself, and then they come and pick it up and away it goes!

CanadaImporting/Registering Car & Form 7501

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll call and see what I can find out and I will post what I find for anyone who has this problem in the future.

And thanks flames9_RN for confirming what an international airport is. After flying between the US and Canada numerous times during the span of my relationship I had no idea!

Not sure if your being sarcastic there or not.

Therefore, I would not have to cross the border with my car? Cause I can't leave right now.

Therefore......you goto an airport in the USA......When I say International airport, it means an airport accepting international flights, not the small city airports

CanadaDual Citizenship - Yay or Nay?

To answer the main question: yay. Primarily because you'd never have to deal with issues in moving back and forth. My grandmother was a GC holder (through the lottery) and she spent quite a few years of her life going back just to avoid losing the GC. Plus it'd be a plus in my career path. I think, speaking in practical terms, it's all upsides; although, I'd understand how it might be emotionally difficult for some.

That said, I have a side question. I know that you don't have to renounce your Canadian citizenship, but would you have to if you had a third citizenship? I'm asking because I would have triple (tri?) citizenship (+Iranian) and I wanna make sure that that won't be an issue on the US side of things.

Just be aware that since you are Iranian--you may go into AP (additional processing) after your interview in Mtl

CanadaDual Citizenship - Yay or Nay?

Thanks so much.  I have had no luck with Google, it just directs me to archival stuff.  Canadian Forces site said you can write in or fax in a request but they don't tell you who to send it to or where to send it.  I think I will call Veterans Affairs.  Failing that, Service Canada..

Thanks for your help!

*update* Your link to collectionscanada had the application I needed.  Thanks so much!*

That will get everything and I mean everything,  Mine was a few inches thick!  But not sure if its any good for immigration!  I don't have the pkg with me here in Nicaragua, so can't look at it. There may be an old UER in there that may work--just get it notarized!!

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2014-02-07 16:02:00
CanadaDual Citizenship - Yay or Nay?

Hi Flames!  Maybe you can help me on that.  I have been trying to find out how to obtain those records, as I lost my UER several years ago.  There has to be a way to get a hold of copies somewhere.  Do you know anything about that?  Can you point me in the right direction? (I got out in 1981 so they were all paper records back then.  Dating myself, hahaha)

Thanks in advance!!

Could try Veterans affairs: http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/help/faq

1 can get their whole military records, but may take a while, as they photocopy it.......http://www.collectio...2-909.007-e.pdf     http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/022/022-909.007-e.html

Not sure if getting your whole military records would be of any use for immigration, but interesting to go through.  Your best bet may be to contact Veterans Affairs--I'm sure they have come across it as well.  Or what you could do, it write something up, giving a brief overlook of your military history (trades, etc), and state you were honorably discharged and get it notarized.  Or if you live close to your former unit, go there and see if they can dig something up.

There was 1 other person recently that had to get their military records, bu tnot sure if they were still in at the time or had been out for awhile.

CanadaDual Citizenship - Yay or Nay?

I am not there yet, but I do plan to eventually become a US citizen.  I will ALWAYS be Canadian because I was born a Canadian, however most of my immediate relatives are US citizens and I spent the greater portion of my childhood in the United States (long story, and I may tell it here one day).   Because of this, becoming a citizen will make things a lot easier with regard to transferring properties and things like that.  The America I grew up with is a lot different than today's America, and it makes me sad to see some of the things that are going on, but as a previous poster said, Canada has her issues also.  I grew up feeling like I always had on foot on either side of the border, and allegiance for both sides.  I served proudly in Canada's Armed Forces while my siblings served in the United States military.  Ours is a family with strong ties on both sides, so for me it makes so much sense to make it easier on myself and become a citizen of both countries.  I want to become a citizen of the country where my fondest childhood memories are, but I will also always be Canadian.

Since u served in the Cdn Armed forces ( I did as well for nearly 15 yrs--Army, Navy and Airforce) You will have to submit paperwork for that. I can't recall what they refer to it ( I got out Jan 2005)  I think it was called your UER at 1 time, but the name has changed!

CanadaDual Citizenship - Yay or Nay?

I'll be honest, I'm not sure I like the USA enough to do this.

I know after 3 years I can, and maybe closer to the end of my 10 year gc I may want to instead of paying more money to the USCIS (the rates will have likely been raised by then.)  But right now, I have no intentions of obtaining US Citizenship.

One downside that people haven't said is filing taxes, which a USC must do.  I was reading a magazine recently and it's the prime reason why people do give up their US citizenship.  They make good money in their new country and suddenly have to pay more taxes to the US government because they are doing well in their new country.

Doesnt really matter if ur married to a USA citizen..You will be filing anyways....And as I mentioned above....something happens--death, divorce, you head back to Canada, one can renounce ur USA citizenship.

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2014-02-06 21:57:00

And if you decide to go back to Canada--with no plans to come back to the USA, you can give up your USA citizenship.

Way I look at it---Politicians lie all the time--and they are suppose to be the leaders of the country!!  :-)    I don't believe in forking over more $$$$ to the gov't than I have to!  Lose ur greencard, more $$$ thrown out!  Just my 2 cents and thats the great thing about Free countries, its my opinion--and no one else to care, lol

CanadaDual Citizenship - Yay or Nay?

Personal decision.  More advantages than disadvantages!  As others have mentioned, even though you renounce your other citizenship at the oath ceremony it means nothing.  I see no reason why to keep giving the USA gov't more $$$ every 10 yrs and the prices for the green card and naturalization just keep going up and up. I'm happy to be a USA citizen and will always be a law abiding citizen, and grateful I am able to live in a free country (many here in Nicaragua would love to have that opportunity) But I will always be Canadian and if any one asks me--I reply Canadian--simple as that.

You may not see it--but be aware that since you are from Iran, you may go into AP (additional processing) after your interview in Montreal.  And they may or may not inform you of that!  In other words--don't make nay plans until visa is in hand!  This happens from time to time when one is from a country that isn't on good terms with the USA

CanadaDriving through boarder with k-1 visa

Isn't it true that we have up to one year to register our vechicle in the USA once we arrive? I have been doing more research and it seems I could potentially drive through boarder with my Canadain plates and insurance and get the car imported before one year? We do have 90 days on the k-1 visa to be married or return to Canada.

Any insight?

I'm not certain on the time.....As it differs from state to state!   I believe one does not have to import it right at the border, if they give you any hassles (cant find the stickers/stamps)  but can get it completed at any International airport.   As others in the above posts stated, I believe a few had to get an importer company to handle it.

But you def want to check into what your state says...as you could get ticketed....or if you get into an accident, you may find out ur not covered, and if an insurance company can get away without paying any $$$$$, they will find out!

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2014-01-08 12:01:00
CanadaDriving through boarder with k-1 visa

Reading through VJ it looks like Hyundai is the one company that won't do this for you.  Even a google search turned up much of the same result.  sad.png  Someone even tried a conference call between Hyundai Canada and Hyundai USA with no results either.  If you don't have the sticker mentioned by Flames, you may want to consider selling or trading your car in (or if it's really new, returning it) and getting one that will import easily.

Because of all these issues I'm seeing, I will never buy a Hyundai myself.  What horrid customer service!

Actually I would buy a Hyundia..almost bought a 2011 Tuscon before we left Virginia!  Ended up buying our Honda CRV!  I was quite surprised how great the Tuscon handled and felt like a solid vehicle--much different than the old Hyundia Pony's of the 1980's  lol   And I had an Elantra for a rental vehicle for a week when I was back in Saskatoon for a week and it was pretty nice!  They say their quality is on par with Honda/ Toyota, but people still have the negative views, so you are paying less!! But that will change!  The new Sante Fe's look sharp!!

I'm sure there is a way to bring it down on ur own!  To be honest, I'm not certain what the decal/sticker/stamp thats found in the engine dept or driver side door looks like.  And if you are unable to do it at your POE, you shoul dbe able to do it at another Border if you live close to another (mexico) or an International airport.  And you could always contact the dealership where you bought it--they may be of some help--maybe not, but doesnt hurt to ask!

some info I found:

CanadaDriving through boarder with k-1 visa

I sold my car before I moved.....But there have been many Canadians here on VJ that brought their cars and did not use an Importer to do it.  Many obtained the compliance letter, and others that could not--were able to use the stickers that are found in the engine bay or sometimes on the inside driver door

Load up the car all you want-- Yes there are some things 1 can't bring into the USA.............  http://www.cbp.gov/x..._restricted.xml

The govn't site that mentions that probably means if you are shipping ur vehicle, ie going on a train or on back of a semi--it has to be empty...Personally driving it down is a different story

Ensure you have some kind of inventory list--doesn't have to be fancy--and majority of the time they don't even look!!

CanadaBringing my car

There is a lot to consider.....

1) Some manufacturers won't issue (or make it extremely difficult) to get a compliance letter--I believe Hyundai is one of them.

 2) If your paying out of pocket, not a concern, but if you have a car loan, some banks won't releases the lien on it, which I believe may cause problem Registering the vehicle in the USA

 3) Do not believe what a car salesman tells you!!  Many times when you take a new car to another country--it NO longer has a warranty!  Yes they will still do recall work, but not warranty work.  I found this out when we bought our 2011 Honda CRV and moved to Nicaragua. Car salesman told me, of course you will have a warranty, Honda is a global company!  WRONG, I called Honda and they confirmed--no warranty--which I was fine with.

4) Back to the compliance letter--quite often the compliance "stickers" can be found in the engine compartment or driver side door.

5)  Cars are generally cheaper in the USA.  My 2011 CRV was around $26000 out the door, pretty sure the same price in Canada was close to $10,000!!   Of course back then the Canada $$$ and USA $$$ were pretty much  even, not the case now.

Years ago, over 20,lol  I bought a 1978 Honda 2 door civic for the winter!!  $750!!  Dad found it in a farmers farm while doing work.   What a fun car to drive, sold it that spring for the same $750 I paid for it.  Even of you bouight a car for $3000 and sold it for $1000, your probably still ahead of the game as more than likely the car in the USA will cost less, AND have a warranty.  And no hassles importing it.

Many states have yearly vehicle inspections. I know in Virginia they had yearly vehicle inspections, and then every 2 yrs an emission test.   Not very hard tests to pass!  I believe the tests may be a bit more strict to pass in California---more along the emission testing

CanadaAnyone get a K3 through Vancouver?

For many the K3 makes no sense as it can take just as long as the CR-1, and then 1 is NOT able to work right away, more $$ as 1 has to AOS.  With the CR-1, one can get Cdn Ei right away as well (if u qualify on it)

CanadaAnyone get a K3 through Vancouver?

K3 has sort of gone the way of the dodo bird!   I think I only recall of one taking place all of last yr!  In many instances the K3 doesn't make much sense as it costs more than the Cr-1, I guess the only advantage is that since you would go through Vancouver, it may be a bit faster, and it may not!!.  And keep in mind, you have to be residing in Manitoba and west to be able to goto Van--one doesn't get to choose the consulate.

http://www.visajourn...content/compare   comparing the 2, so you can see why the K3 is pretty much obsolete, costs more, yet you get less!
