CanadaWriting a Check from my CND account to my US account

OOO that's a great idea... two under 10k transactions gives you a lot more leeway than one big 15k jump.

One just has to report the $$$$, thats it, its not a big deal and if you do it via financial institution---they are the ones reporting it, not you. Breaking it up into small amounts, may just mean ur paying more fees on it

CanadaWriting a Check from my CND account to my US account

This is the easiest way to move money:

http://www.xe.com/xetrade/

I linked up my US and CDN accounts from there.  And you wire money from one to the other by doing a "bill payment" from the CDN bank (I've done it from both BMO and ING direct).  Do it in two <$10K transfers and you're done.  better exchange rates than banks will give you and less holds.  Usually funds are available for use within 48 hrs.

Yep thats another 1 many use---and probably better than Western Union but I believe works under the same principal---so do ur research

CanadaWriting a Check from my CND account to my US account

As well I think banks can make wire transactions......So there are many methods of doing this. I know some have opened bank accounts with TDCanadatrust  as they now have banks in the USA (or did) same with RBC.  I think the bigger issue is finding the method that gives you the best exchange rate.  Wasn't too long ago the Cdn $$ was at par or slightly above the US $$$.....So 1 has to take that into consideration.  cheers

CanadaWriting a Check from my CND account to my US account

Thank you for the responses! I think I can call up the accountant we've been using to ask about this. I have been declaring the funds according to FBAR. Got tired of having to declare it every year and not even really use that money so I was going to move it. I was hoping it would be easier.

Was super easy with customhouse--now Western union!  Took a bit to set up the account, as tey had to phone and verify I was a real person--not sure if western union does that!  But it was super easy!

CanadaWriting a Check from my CND account to my US account

Writing a Cdn cheque can be a real hassle, I know it was for me back in 2005 whenever I dealt with Wachovia.  I had to deal with 1 teller at 1 branch, otherwise it was a nightmare.  There are online services that can tx your $$$. Used to use Customhouse.com and it was great, no fees--they made their $$$$ on the exchange rate, which was still better that what the bank would give you. But a few years back it was bought out by Western Union and the exchange rate they gave wasn't as beneficial as CH.  And now I think they do charge a $5 fee!  But for $15000, it is something you want to check into.  Right now CH (western union) is quoting me this:

15,000.00 CAD = 13,926.28 USD 1 CAD = 0.9284 USD//  1 USD = 1.0771 CAD

http://www.westernunion.com/Home     The banks or Western Union should fill out the forms on ur behalf, I know Customhouse did for me.

Many reasons for AP--Born or lived in a country that is not on good terms with the USA.  Even what classes you took at school, anything that could be used for terrorism. And some people are randomly selected.  And a criminal background.

One has a few options, email Mtl and ask, and the USA citizen can always contact thier congress person, who may or may not be of any help, but if you don't try..........

Yep--just takes the right attitude---go with the attitude of not wanting to try and understand them, and 1 won't!!  This can take place anywhere!!

This is a joke, right? He didn't go to the bathroom for 3 days? lol.

Ya that's a bit weird!  I speak very little Spanish, but yet can make my way around Nicaragua!  I guess next time learn Donde esta la bano? lol  or just Donde Bano will do the job!!   To get along with fellow workers, one has to be flexible, especially if you are in the minority

CanadaSpanish in the Workplace

At the last hospital I worked it was Filipinos, lol  They enjoyed speaking in their own language.  If one stays in his line of work and where you reside, well I guess it is a good chance that's the norm and he is going to have to adjust...or try a new line of work!

I live in Nicaragua and I find Spanish difficult, so I feel his pain, many speak Spanish very fast!!  One can always ask them to slow down!

CanadaMontreal Interview Dates

Yes thats always been a complaint since I have been on VJ.,..only 2 consulates in Canada that do relationship visas and only Mtl for Cr-1/Ir-1  Canada is a large country size wise..not population wise.  People in other countries go through hardships as well.  I'm pretty sure the folks here in Nicaragua wish they had Canada's problems, lol    Hopefully the process goes smoothly for all.

The Montreal embassy? I thought they only took emails

Just another person trying to be helpful when they are not, as well know MTL is extremely difficult to get a hold of.  One can try emailing them--Ensure ur case # is in the subject line along with a description of what u need.  And if I was a betting person, they will be closing early on Tuesday!

CanadaMoving and bringing your belongings - what is taxed?

Yep on that. The dealership told me the extended warranty would still be good - I'd just have to register with the dealership in Cali.

Mazda North America however...notified me that nope that's not the case.

How do you know a car salesman is lying?  they have opened their mouth!!

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2014-01-24 08:18:00
CanadaMoving and bringing your belongings - what is taxed?

Probably one of those areas where it is a bit grey. Best to contact the bank and see what they have to say as well find out what the DMV requires in the State you are moving to.

When bringing $$$ over $10,000, all one is doing is notifying the authorities, they are just looking out for $$ laundering. If you make it online, the financial institution makes the report for you. When traveling with it, there is a spot on the customs forms to notify authorities

On my inventory list I put down the items and if they were under a year I made mention of it.   They barely even looked at my list, and never inspected my Uhaul and I did not pay any duty on anything and that is pretty much how it seems to go for most.

And many manufactures warranties are no longer valid when you move to another country, even from Canada to the USA.  Yes they will do recall work, but not warranty issued stuff!  Many people don't realize that. When I bought my 2011 Honda CRV and knew we were moving to Nicaragua for a few yrs--the honda salesman told me--oh of course your warranty will be covered there as Honda is a global country!  WRONG!!  I called up Honda and the lady said nope!!!   So if a salesman told you that it would be covered, it may not be.

CanadaWhen you move what do you do with your Canadian finances and debt?

Some schools will waive the 1 yr residency for in state tuition rates--some will base it on the USA citizens residency length--just have to ask

CanadaWhen you move what do you do with your Canadian finances and debt?

I know others here on VJ that have had a job back in Canada and moved to the USA on a K1 and worked remotely while in the USA....Don't know if it is legal or not, and VJ isn't probably a good resource on this issue

CanadaCanadian tax return 2013

I would highly recommend 1 check out http://forums.serbin...ewforum.php?f=2   and gain some basic info!  When it first came time to do my Cdn taxes in 2005 while I was in the USA it was a nightmare with H&R Block!  They told me as well their Cdn/USA expert could handle my situation. So I made the appt and showed up!  I knew he was clueless when He didn't know what RRSP's were or that they needed to be noted on form 8891, I thanked him and left!

Family physicians in Canada are busy as it is, so not a huge incentive for them to be part of the program.

CanadaWoot - last leg of our immigration journey - daughter's citizenship!

Yes down the road, you can have dual citizenship--Cdn/USA!!  Just keep in mind, that the USA allows it--but really only sees you as American.

CanadaFrustrated with vicious circle

They will let him in. Just remember no big bags or electronics of any kind (including keys, cell phones)  and the elevator opens from the rear, lol!    What works great is 1 of those accordion style plastic binders that have many compartments.  And it can be continued to be used to save documents, when it comes time to apply for the 10 yr greencard.  And keep track of the dates that you leave the USA,  in the future when ur filling out more forms, they ask, and you will have them handy

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2014-01-18 18:22:00
CanadaFrustrated with vicious circle

CR-1/IR-1 are initially the same at the beginning----but since you are married for less than 2 years, you are a Cr-1 and will end up with a 2 year green card!  The IR-1--married 2 years or more, will end up with a 10 yr greencard.  As a cr-1 (or ir-1) I don't believe you can go online and change ur interview like a K1 can---they are two totally different visa and processes.  I belive the only way it can be changes is via a phone call. Search out the VJ poster SAYLIN, she usually has some good posts and put together some sort of guide.   http://www.visajourn...r/90397-saylin/

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2014-01-18 12:17:00
CanadaFrustrated with vicious circle

I would email MTL--with case # in subj line----and if u get no response--attend the assigned interview and THEN 2 options.  Ask the interviewer if they can give u the visa then, or next day because of ur vacation(bring proof)  yes this has worked for a few, but not something u should count on.   other option is keep the passport and on completion of the trip, you mail it back to mtl.   keep in mind they can be slow at returning the passport pkg.  but less stress!!!

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2014-01-17 21:54:00
CanadaCase went to wrong Consulate?

You might want to call the consulate in Vancouver to make sure that it was send to them rather than anywhere else. Since Vancouver is the only one handling K1's it should definitely have been send there, but you never know. It wouldn't be the first time that they mess something up... And yes VAC does stand vor Vancouver wink.png

Wrong!!  Montreal does K1's as well. Yes it should have been sent to Vancouver.  Has happened in the past as well to others--maybe they will pop in and say what they did to rectify it.  I believe they contacted Van and got Mtl to send the info to Van consulate.
