And if you have a CDn American Express CC, you can phone and get an "American" one!! Some USA agencies can look at ur Canadian credit, but many are just too lazy to do so!!

CanadaCustom house - setting up a new account
custom house (CH) is a brokerage firm!! They are sort of the middle man!! 1 must have:

1) a Canadian bank Acct (or what ever country ur from)
2) a USA bank acct

So you want to transfer cdn funds to ur american bank, this is where CH comes in! They dont charge u any fees if u do it electronically (EFT) they have a wire option, but charge fees. They make their $$$ on the exchange rate, BUT the exchange rate ur getting from them is usually far better than the banks or paypal will give u!!

Plus I use it to send money from the USa back to Canada when going home for holidays! I have transferred a fair bit of $$$ with CH and never had a problem.

CanadaCustom house - setting up a new account
I have never had a problem putting money into ANYONES account!! I have deposited money into my brother in laws account while he was in Iraq. Just went in with a bit of info (just his name and address to verify was right person) and deposited money no problem into his account. My parents have done the same for me a few times in the past. Now they have my Presidents choice bank card and just use the ATM.

Custom House is a very reputable company. Been using them since 2005. I have even seen their office in Downtown Victoria BC. Now that I'm heading back to Canada for 3 weeks in June, i just transfer $$ from my USA bank to my Cdn acct, free of charge.

CanadaColumbia Ice Fields (Alberta)
I think we have our plan for Tuesday to Friday worked out!! Depart early Tuesday morning and make our way up to the Columbia ice fields, check that out, take one of those snocoach tours, stay overnight tin Jasper. On Wed, rent a canoe on http://www.malignelake.com/canoe.html maybe as well do the JasperTram http://www.jaspertramway.com/ (maybe do that Tuesday) then head off to Edmonton. Check out the mall Thursday morning, no desire to see the whole mall, lol do the rollercoaster, etc and then back to Calgary. There is some big science exhibit http://www.telusworldofscience.com/ that my wife wants to see. not sure why, we visited the one in Vancouver last year, I bet they are very similar!! As well have to go to Pete's Drive in for a burger and a shake!! Best deal for a car rental was through Thrift. Mon to Saturday for $125 (plus taxes). Just have to find a reasonable priced place for jasper. Appears a B&B is the best bet

CanadaQuestions about moving my belongings....
One can visit the USA (yes, u can be denied, blah blah blah) But I would NOT be bringing a car load of personal belongings with ya! I wouldnt even pack a job resume!! if the POE officer suspects your going to stay (and a car load of personal belongings shows that) he can deny you entry!! best of luck

Canadak1 and k3 questions
QUOTE (Maureen @ May 4 2008, 09:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I live in Canada, my fiance lives in the Us. We want to get married and our plan is for me to move there. My two kids and I are going to spend the summer there, July and August, and planned to head back in early Sept for school.

We considered applying for a K-1 visa, sometime this month, figuring it would take 6-9 months to get approved, assuming nothing goes wrong. We have also talked about getting married sometime early this summer and then applying for the K-3 visa thinking at least when we did get approved, I would be able to work once entering the country. I'm not thrilled at the idea of going there and not being able to work.

Ok, so here's my questions :

1. Can you really work upon entering the country on a k-3 visa more quickly than you can with a k-1?

2. If I went there this summer, and our intent was not to get married, but we ultimately did, is there a way to stay in the country without having to return to Canada?

3. What's the average cost of a lawyer for this type of thing?

I guess we're really unsure as to what the best route is, so any and all opinions and advice are welcome kicking.gif

1. NO! If ya want to work ASAP, you need to go the CR-1 route. Where in Canada are you? ALL cr-1 goto Montreal for the interview, which can be a bit slow at handing out any visa type!!. BUT for the k1 and k3 there are two consulates that do those interviews--Montreal and Vancouver. Manitoba and west goto VAN, rest goto Mtl. Reason why I ask, is that Vancouver is usually much faster at handing out interviews. If your in a province that goes through Montreal, and want to get a marriage based visa (k3 or cr-1) ur probably better off with the cr-1 as they take about the same amount of time, and the cr-1 has better options! and I believe costs less! In a perfect world (no such thing when it comes to immigration) the K3 should be faster, but that really isnt the case anymore. The process takes anywhere from 8 months to a year!! K1 can take 6 months or longer

2. If one went to the USA on a holiday and had NO intention of staying, then out of the blue said, hey, I'm staying, that would be fine. But since you have intent, well that isn't!! But its not us that you have to convince!! Keep in mind if one goes that route, one may have to prove they had no intent, and that one can't leave the USA until you have completed AOS or got AP. Well u can leave the USA, but just may not get back in!! have others done this route, of course, and it worked out for them, but one does stand a chance of being denied, your choice

3. lawyers aren't cheap and not all of them are worth their $$$$$ We used one based out of New York and she cost us $2500 plus filings!! Not cheap! She was great, but not worth the $$$,lol Wish we had of found VJ before we started! if you go the k1, k3 or cr-1 route, sit down and go over the stickies at the top of each of those forums. Everything you need is here. There are step by step instructions for each, even pictures, and its free!!! The filling out of the paperwork isnt that hard, just take time to do it right, ask questions. The hardest part is the waiting!! Some people get lucky and zoom right through the process, while others seem to wait and wait! And a lawyer doesn't make it any faster. Really, the lawyer is just a $$$$ proof reader. YOU still have to gather all the required documents (police check, divorce cert, etc) and have to give personal info to the lawyer! We stil filled out our own forms and our lawyer proof checked them! Can do that for free on VJ,lol So if ya have a straight forward case, save ur money (straight forward meaning no criminal record, overstay in the USA)
Best of luck

Yes, one can stil visit ( I did it monthly while going through the cr-1 process) Just be aware one can be denied entry! my advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3)keep ur response short and to the point, dont tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5)pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isnt going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didnt lie! Refer to #1

Best of luck

Trailmix - where did you find the # to contact Ford for a letter of compliance? Did you just contact your local dealership, or is there a # on their website.

thanks in advance!

http://www.nhtsa.dot...ada01192007.htm has the phone #'s of all manufacturers

Some one on the board said Ford charged them $75 for it!! And they may have stated it would have been free if they had gone to the dealership, but I may be mistaken!!

CanadaCan you get EI from Canada
I'm still half asleep, so this may not make sense. Normally a k1, k3 or cr-1 doesn't quit their job until they are about to move to the USA. so everyone that is eligible to get EI, doesn't get it until they arrive in the USA. Can you get EI while stil in Canada, then transfer it over with ya when you goto the USA, I suppose under certain circumstances, but surely not if ya just quit ur job! There is 1 VJ member that was denied EI (and lost her appeals) because the EI people felt in their opinion that she quit her job too early. I didnt go the K1 or K3 route so not sure about thsoe visas. In the EI peoples eyes (which is what matters) is that k1'ers are work authorized while the K3 requires the EAD before getting EI. Cr-1/IR-1 are work authorized from day one, so EI eligible! And to add further confusion, inthe past while wasn't their a K1 VJ member that was delayed EI payments until she got a EAD? In short, a K3 can get EI, one just requires EAD.

K3 can get EI, BUT they have to have the EAD--at least thats what been said on here--I went the CR-1 route.
