CanadaWhat NOT to say to a USA border Agent!

NEVER have they asked for my passport, so I didnt hand it over. Of course this time she wanted it.

And since you don't need a passport to travel over land, what would she have done if you didn't have a passport? Did she see it and then want to look at it, or how did she know you had one?

On another note, I was once comming to Canada on a visit for a week and they asked me (since I was on a Green Card at the time) how long I was away. I looked at the customs guy and said, "I'm comming to visit Canada for a week". Think he just automatically was thinking all Canadians were visiting the US and the standard question is how long was your trip. It was kind of amusing when I told the guy how long I was visiting rather then how long I was away, he had kind of that embarrased look and then just let me through...

I was flying. No, she never saw it, I left it in my back pack. I was interested in seeing if she would ask for it, as in the past I have handed over my passport and they never even open it up.

CanadaWhat NOT to say to a USA border Agent!
I traveleld monthly to DC from Halifax when I was going through the CR-1 process and never had a problem. Of course I didnt try to agitate them back then, lol

CanadaWhat NOT to say to a USA border Agent!
I admit I was incorrect to say "Im Canadian" lol I was in a bit of a grumpy mood as well. Guess she was just doing her job.

CanadaWhat NOT to say to a USA border Agent!
So I was returning to DC from Saskatoon on Wed. So was my turn to go to the next stall for USA Immigration. Lucky me gets this crusty chick, and I just knew she was a grump, lol and I probably didnt help myself. So I get to her booth, hand her just my Greencard. NEVER have they asked for my passport, so I didnt hand it over. Of course this time she wanted it. So she takes the passport and looks it over with a fine tooth comb, looked at every page. Then she asked where I was coming from?? I explained Canada. She asked why i was in Canada? I stated "I'm Canadian" lol which wasnt the answer she wanted, lol She in a very bitchy tone stated "now that doesnt answer my question, does it? lol, I said I guess not, sorry, I was visiting my folks!,lol Again she looked over my passport and greencard, taking her time, then stamped the boarding pass, and I was on my way.

All depends when they mail it out. Many cases they seem to mail it out a few days later after the interview

CanadaInterview Reschedule
In the past, people have just had to send in what they were missing. Maybe if your lucky, they can do everything on the same visit--talk nicely, lol, doesnt hurt to ask, all they can say is no and to come back later.

Hi, just wanted to say thanks for the advice on my interview. You guys were right, I ended up going with everything but my medical and it was fine. I just have to email the consulate when I have my results and they'll give me a time to go back, which hopefully is soon! They gave me on of those RFE sheets saying I need my medical and they can't process the visa until then.

And to anyone who is stressing about the interview....just like everyone says it's not near as bad as you think. People are nice and just doing their jobs. Seems more like a routine then an interrogation!

smile.gif

I'm glad you got that straightened out, however it sounds like you already had an interview and they're making you come back?? How very annoying. You could have mailed them the medical, or had the doctor done that, and then the Consulate could have mailed you your visa after they received your medical. An extra trip not really needed. Hope you aren't too far!

CanadaPOE Report
There really should be some common sense when it comes to animals and hot weather. Some bad press about a dog/cat dying due to a long wait at the border would not be a good thing!! People don't care about immigration, but they do care about animals! Glad it went sort of ok!

CanadaA few more questions
my accordion binder wasn't clear--was black and I was able to take it in! Just dont bring in any big bags or purses, and NO electronics of ANY kind, including car remotes!! ur going to go through airport like security, so the less metal (including coins) on ya the better.

Personally if it's April now and you're heading across permanently on the K1 in May, I'd just skip the visit. You're going to need to save up as much money as you can after you cross due to the non working part, wedding bills, daily cost of living bills.

Sorry. Had to laugh at the financial advice. laughing.gif Did you know that some people can afford not to work?

And I do recall a person asking this question at their time of interview in Mtl, and the consular person stated it was a possibility! I need more coffee to wake up!!

CanadaGoing to the US and not activating a K1 visa
I dont think the above was a negative comment, He (being a former POE official) was stating what he would have done, and probably some others !! Zyggy has provided this forum tons of useful information over the years! And yes it his only his opinion, as others POE officials may do different. I think thats the main point, many of us are making--POE officials each interpret the rules/laws differently.

If I was in ur situation would I risk it? ya i probably would, and its good that you have a back up plan! Best of luck

CanadaGoing to the US and not activating a K1 visa
wow, you come to a site for assistance and we pass on our experience and you blow it off. Maybe you should do a search and find all the posts of people firing their lawyers for wrong information.

As stated from many, POE officers interpret the rules differently. So it may work out for you, or it may not. And yes there have been other k1'ers that have done this with success. people here are just trying to make you aware of everything. When it comes down to it, none of us are going to loose any sleep if it doesn't work out. Just ensuring ur aware of everything.

A bit different situation than urs, but there was a gal from Canada, that came in on a K1 , got married, and left to go back to Canada without AP. She was able to do this a few times with success, then on one visit WHAM, she got denied entry, as she didnt have AP. So she was stuck in Canada and then went the K3 or cr-1 route!

best of luck in crossing, as stated others have done it with success, but just be aware that their is a possibility the POE officer may deny you, and even his supervisor, the worst thing you could do then is get take an attitude!!

CanadaGoing to the US and not activating a K1 visa
And thats why the immigrating process can be very frustrating! Every POE officer seems to understand the laws in a different manner. it MAY or may not work in ur favor, one just does not know!!

I traveled monthly to DC while my CR-1 was ongoing but NEVER had a problem, BUT if I had seen a different POE officer, he/she may have not allowed me entry, its all one big gamble. Yes i realize a k1 is different than a cr-1, just trying to state that a POE officer interprets the rules differently

CanadaRRSP reporting..flames9 can you help?
To be honest I have no clue!! My inlaws accountant did my taxes when I cashed in my RRSP's. Their accountant being American, had never handled RRSP's before, so not sure if they did it right, or what they did!!

http://forums.serbinski.com/ lots of info on this site about RRSP's. ensure u do a search as the fellow that answers most of the questions, can get a bit grumpy if ya don't,lol also look for form 8891--which is the reporting of the rrsps to the IRS

Canadawhat if i go see my sweety in may/june ??
I traveled monthly to DC, my adice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3)keep ur response short and to the point, dont tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5)pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isnt going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didnt lie! Refer to #1

Best of luck

It's funny, we picked up all these little books at the supermarket yesterday, the real estate ones and the job ones etc.

So my Husband is looking at the job one and there is an ad for truck drivers, 'No experience, No problem'!! The funny thing is it's for Werner Trucking - which he made comments on all the way here for their lack of driving skills.

ohmy.gif

laughing.gif

I wonder if that's the truck that almost hit me head-on yesterday? Seriously. Watch out for the trucks around here. I've been in more near-misses in the last year than in my entire life in Canada. helpsmilie.gif

Well what is it? 90 days or 3 months? lol ya too bad ur provincial health coverage doesn't cover the tab!! I'm pretty sure the $$ the Dr makes is pure under the table $$$$$ as most only accept cash, well at least the Dr in Halifax that was the case!! And lik eht other stated 1 Police check is all thats required, just ensure it is done Canada wide and in al the names you have used!!

(and i think it's the job of the US citizen to call them)

the touches is if your date change on the uscis website (online case thing) when u register there with your noa1 case number.
And some get approved without touches (i am a good exemple)
