CanadaHah! US medical coverage at its best!
back on the medical topic, lol I think it depends where one lives in the USA and canada when it comes to medical. My parents live in Saskatoon and thy get in to see the dr with no probs. My father has had 3 major heart operations, and no probs getting in.

Me in VA, with excellent cvoverage had to phone many dr offices to find one that was taking new clients. I just wanted a physical for RN program, im in good health, so one would think it would be easy, not really, lol As well I have some friends in the DC area and they are extremely well off, and she has thyroid problems (and others)and she has difficulty getting in to see the dr. So I think it really depends on where you live in the USA and canada when it comes to finding a DR.

CanadaEI Benefits
CR-1 or IR-1 CAN collect EI as well, actually more straight forward for the cr-1 /ir-1 as there is no doubt they are work eligible!! And I believe once a K3 gets EAD,they too can collect EI

I collected EI way back in 2005. I was at the max and for some reason I think I was gettign $1200 or so after the 25% that gets automatically deducted. Not sure if that was every 2 weeks, or monthly!! Too long ago,lol I'm currently in RI and not back home in VA to check, but I doubt I saved any of the pay statements

CanadaHow did you start to build your new credit rating?
Some institutions can check on your Canadian credit rating, but sometimes need to be prodded to do so.

My wife added myself onto many of her accounts--cable, phone, electricity. As well she added me on to her credit cards, but their is a specific term one has to use when doing that, can't recall it right now, maybe its "authorized user"" BUT they are suppose to be dropping that avenue of gaining credit, not sure when it is suppose to happen. Saw that on the Suzy Orman show.

And when it comes time to purchasing a house, the Canadian doesn't have to be on the mortgage! I wasn't, but you can be listed on the deed.

Just by doing those few things listed above, I have excellent credit in the USA and have never really worked since I arrived in DEC 2004

CanadaWhat About DUIs?
I htink it al depends who u get at the border. I had a friend (not close) who was a trucker and had a DUI inCanada, and he drove into the USA a lot, then out of the blue tey denied him entry because of the DUI! His trucking company was not happy with him,lol

CanadaLawyers and "green"card
We used a lawyer for our cr-1 (before we found VJ and an USA immigration official said it was nearly impossible to do on ur own, lol) but she stated she had no super powers to make things faster, no special "ins"

CanadaCanadian Bank Accounts
QUOTE (trailmix @ Aug 26 2008, 08:20 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I don't know if this applies to ALL U.S. banks or just RBC Centura.

In Canada I would go to a bank and talk to a loans/mortgage person about getting a mortgage.

Here, I am put in touch with one of their independent mortgage people. I was talking to her one day about closing costs (which are outstandingly huge here) and she was listing them off and mentioned having to get an appraisal.

I said in Canada normally the bank will do this and waive the fee to the purchaser. She said if she did that the money would be coming out of her pocket.

I think it's rather kooky to have independent people handling your banks mortgages - if for no other reason than the options they can provide you with - as above - are non-existent.

I don't have a debit card here, just the visa cheque card - I was never offered a debit card.

In canada (victoria) we used a mortgage broker. They shopped around and got us the best deal--was with TD. Didnt cost me a cent!! AND prior tothat I had gone in person to TD about a mortgage and what thier best offer was AND it wasnt as good as a deal that i got through the Broker!! YET it was with the same bank! No clue why one would get a better deal with a broker, than going in person to the bank!! The broker has to ge typaid, and I didnt pay him! I asked the bank about that later, and i forget their response!~

CanadaCanadian Bank Accounts
In Canada I always used my ATM (debit) card, rarely ever used a CC. But here in the USA its always my CC (to get the points) have never used my debit card at a store!! have just used it at the ATM machine to deposit/withdraw $$

Another thing I found veyr different was Locking in of mortgage rates! When i got my mortgage in BC, the interest rate was not "locked" in until we closed on the house. It was locked in a fashion that if the rates went higher you were safe, but if they went lower,u were able to take advantage of the lower rate! But when we were getting estimates here in the USA,that was not the case. Once you locked in, thats what you got, even if the rates lowered prior to closing. At least that was what we were told by a few banks we got estimates from!!

CanadaCanadian Bank Accounts
Ihave had various accounts with various Cdn institutions and yes many you had to keep a certain amount of $$$ in your acct to get the "free" banking. BUT if anytime that amount dropped below the appropriate level, you would get hit with all the fees!! President Choice has NO fees and they have been great to deal with. One can deposit/take out $$$ at any CIBC!! But if you head back to the USA, PC will want you to CLOSE the acct. Prior to leaving NS to the USA and I phoned them up to give them my USA addy. That was all fine , THEN they stated I would have to close my acct soon down the road, I forget the time frame. Instead I gave them my parents addy in SK! I keep very little in the acct, but I keep it active. After no use--think its either 3 or 6 months---they deactivate it! I juts have to cal them up, and the reactivate it within minutes, no questions asked

No, thats no longer the case!! Stores are open in most parts of the country on Sundays. I think the last hold out province was Nova Scotia.

CanadaTake a chance on travel
Having a return ticket is required, but in the eyes of a POE officer, prob doesn't hold a lot of weight as evidence, as most people know that a round trip ticket is often cheaper than a one way ticket!! But if u dont have that return ticket, for sure its going to raise their suspicion.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2008-08-29 04:42:00
CanadaTake a chance on travel
Yes MANY have been successful. I did it montly from Halifax to DC, never had a problem!! Yes some have been denied for various reasons. Some didnt have any ties to Canada, maybe the POE officer was ajerk, or maybe eventhe Cdn was being a jerk, yes hard to belive, lol My advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3)keep ur response short and to the point, dont tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5)pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isnt going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didnt lie! Refer to #1

Best of luck

no, but they walk around with bottle of Corona, lol I could go for a corona right now!!! Our grounds crew here are of South American ancestory, man, they work thier butt off. Excellent work ethic and great role models for others. I have no clue if they are illegal or not!! Don't care! Washington post had an excellent article on illegals last yr or year before. they followed two illegal men around for a week. Was not a pretty existence!! They worked their butts off and were constantly worried about being departed. Their families back home really depended on their $$$ for survival. I have high respect for people like that! I'm sitting on my fat ### on a comfy chair, AC, internet connection, not many worries, and here they are working long days, paying rent on a small room with prob no AC, lucky to have a small TV and sending most of their $$ back to their families.

we already have a vent forum on the CDn site, lol Illegals dont bother me at all. I have been throughout the world thanks to being in the Cdn Armed Forces and seen some pretty crappy places! And if I were in their shoes, i would do the same thing! I think 1 would be crazy to want to live their whole life in a unhealthy conditions, one has to do what 1 has to do! I was fortunate to be born in Canada, not as if I picked to be born there, lol Everyone has their opinion on illegals, so be it. I'm a student RN and have worked at free health clinics, and glad to provide that service to people that otherwise would be suffering. And one doesn't have to be illegal to goto these clinics, just have no insurance. What does bother me (not that much, lol) is seeing a family drive up in a new Mercedes and want to be seen! Why raise my blood pressure over trivial things in life, that my 2 cents!!
