CanadaApproved! POE Question

If the items are traveling with you--u do not need to fil out form 3299--it is for Unaccompanied stuff!!  One should have an inventory list--does not have to be fancy, keep it basic.  Good chance they won't even ask to see it, but best to have it just in case

Oh so what should I do? Will they do the immigration part in Ottawa then?

According to that link---a person would clear customs in the USA......Just like in Saskatoon---no USA immigration there--so one does it once you get to the USA........One could always call the airline your flying with and confirm.

I am assuming you flew to YYZ Pearson? I am flying through YTZ, does that make a difference? It's such a tiny airport I'm not even sure if they will have customs?

Yep I did!!  never been to YTZ.  YTZ does NOT have pre-clearance::http://www.torontopo....aspx#FAQLink53

Yes, it will be toronto, and one wants ample time as I have made the Toronto to DC flight many times--and it always seemed the departure gate for DC was the furthest possible distance away. best of luck

CanadaWaiting For Visa In The U.S.

As you are very well aware...you can"t be living in the USA..simple as that, your time is up and be grateful that you got to spend that much time together during the process......I believe there is a waiver 1 ca file to extend your stay, but don't know how it works so I can't comment on it...but you must do some research about it ASAP as I believe it has to be filed before the 6 months is up.....

When you goto the SSN office. its best to download a new application and fill it out--so if they say your not in the system and please go fill out a new application, you can simply hand over the already filled out form..ensure you bring proper ID as well.

CanadaUrgent - Need to speak to US consulate in Montreal

What are the chance if you don't contact him--slim, so why not try and contact him...and of course it has to be a valid reason for MTL to expedite.....if its something medically one pro should have a Dr's note to back up your story

CanadaUrgent - Need to speak to US consulate in Montreal

if it is truly an urgent matter and knowing how difficult it is to communicate them...I would get the USA citizen to contact their congress person and have them contact MTL as they usually have better avenues.  But they will be closed today due to an American holiday!  Embassies/consulates are closed on all USA holidays..and holidays of that local country

CanadaConsidering vehicle import.. fees?

B I think your bigger issue is going to be buying a vehicle in Canada and immediately heading to the USA----Guess not a real issue.....may just be a $$$$ issue....One can always look at other States..When we lived in VA..bought our new CRV in Maryland..was actually cheaper.

CanadaConsidering vehicle import.. fees?

I am going to a very rural area and all of the used listings are large US made trucks that are 10 miles to the gallon.. getting something good on gas would be worth a bit of extra money in the long run.. I'm just looking at all of my options though. I wonder if the 30 day tax would apply if my in laws in Canada gifted the car to us. Anyway, thanks for the advice. smile.png

1 thing the govt are good at--is getting their tax $$$$..My father gave me a truck..I went to trade it in on that new car...MB charged me tax on it based on the book value of the truck, lol  I only mentioned 30 days as that was the case in Canada...could be a lot longer in your case..or none at all. I currently live in Nicaragua, and can find used vehicles, so I;m sure its possible where ever ur going, lol

CanadaConsidering vehicle import.. fees?

I know when I moved from Manitoba to NS..I walked in the NS office to register my new Car......and the lady said since that I had owned the car for less than 30 days, I would have to pay NS tax on it!!  But if I came back next week, wink wink, I would be over the 30 days and no tax,lol   Yes different that your situation, but I could foresee something very similar to that happening to you if you buy a car and turn around and head to the USA right away.  Where ever your moving to, you should be able to shop online and get an idea!!  Cars are usually much cheaper in the USA, and 1 less hassle to worry about. And if a car isn't popular where u are going, well it should be cheaper than!

CanadaConsidering vehicle import.. fees?

There have been MANY Cdns bring their cars down to the USA and they have NOT had to pay Import fees. Yes there are certain regulations 1 must follow!  What may not work well in your case if you expect to buy your Honda Civic--and then turn around and head to the USA---One has to own the vehicle for so long back in Canada.

CanadaContinue to work in Canada?

Sure 1 can get a free immigration consult, may be worth it.......We hired a lawyer--had not found VJ...and back in 2003 when we started to investigate the process, they didnt have infopass for appt--it was first come, first served, and my wonderful wife waited in line all day to talk to a rep in VA and they said it was difficult, hire a lawyer, lol!  so wrong!  VJ has everything 99% of people need.  The process isn't that difficult--it is the waiting that sucks!

And before one starts putting threatening posts about not being able to visit-----you really should do some research!

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-12-03 21:42:00
CanadaContinue to work in Canada?

If I'm not mistaken CR1 is for married couples only. If you do marry and file, then you can keep working there but you'll have to probably wait a year for your visa before you can have regular visits again with each other. If you move to him and then marry and get a CR1, then you'll have to wait before you can come back to Canada. K1 is what you need to file for as a fiancée. If I were you I'd consult an immigration attorney. The advice you'll get on this site will be general at best.

Yes one has to be ALREADY married to file for the CR-1.......During the visa process, you can STILL visit, many of us did during the process.....Ensure you have Ties to Canada with you when you visit..My 2 cents is down below in my signature.  1 of the big benefits of the CR-1 (over the k1) is that you can leave the USA right away......And yes there are Cdns that do exactly what you want to do,  Keep in mind I do believe you have to spend more time in the USA than Canada!  AND keep a record of EVERY time the USA for 24 hrs or more.....As if you go the USA Citizenship route, one has to list them!!

CanadaWhat Address to mail to Government of non-residency?

What about the GST/HST credit coming my way?  I was under the impression I needed to let them know so that I don't have to worry about sending them back that money.

Yes, I forgot about that--one does have to let those folks know and even when u do, they may stil send you the cheque, which you then have to send back!

here is the info--scroll down for #  http://www.visajourn...ada-gst-cheque/

CanadaWhat Address to mail to Government of non-residency?

Actually you do not have to do anything--What one should do on your last Cdn income tax you filed--on the very front it states the date you became OR ceased to be a Cdn resident, just had to check the right box!!

One can fill out this form: http://www.cra-arc.g.../E/pbg/tf/nr73/   But one does not have to!!  I called revenue Canada and the person I chatted with said that!   I never filled it out--why do more paperwork!!

On the Canadian governemt site  http://www.serviceca...ine/mysca.shtml  you can register there to keep where ur living up to date etc, but its different than what ur asking though.

CanadaBorder crossing with visa or green card

Yep like the informed people have stated, the I-551 that is endorsed in your passport acts as the "greencard"   Travel all you want, (up to a certain amount of time, without having to file more paperwork, think it is a year)  1 of the benefits of the Cr-1/Ir-1

CanadaPOE Questions

Hi All,

My husband finally has his IR-1 visa in hand and we are ready to move to the US.  We have a few questions related to POE:

1. Do you have to enter and stay in the US for a while after "landing" as an immigrant or can you go back to Canada after processing?  I ask because we have a 2 year old who doesn't know the meaning of "waiting" and a newborn and it would be better to leave them with Grandma and Grandpa in Canada while we wait for processing at the POE, then go back to Canada and get them afterwards instead of waiting with them.  Is it possible for us to do this?

2. If my husband and I can go to the POE for processing and return to Canada afterwards, can we drive across the next day with our uhaul and list of accompanying items we're moving and be able to enter with our things?

3. My 2 year old already officially has his US citizenship.  I have an appointment at the US consulate this week to get my newborn a certificate of birth abroad.  I know we won't have it in hand by the time we're ready to move to the US as it takes a few weeks to process.  Is this going to be a problem - moving to the US when my newborn's US citizenship has not yet officially been approved?  Would they potentially say she couldn't come with us??  I will be sure to take all the paperwork and the receipt I get from the consulate with us to the border to prove we applied for US citizenship for her, but I just want to make sure this isn't going to sink us before we move.

Thanks in advance!

1. No, the stamped/endorsed I-551 (The I-551 is what the Mtl consulate put into the Cdn passport) acts as ones Greencard---so you can travel right away, which is 1 of the many benefits of the CR-1/IR-1

2) Yeppers!!!  1 has up to TEN years to move it down!!  1 day after, 3 days after up to 10 yrs

3.  Don't have kids, never really pay attention to kid threads, sorry, lol  But im sure if you do a search on VJ--top right hand corner, you will find answers.   VJ Canada forum tends to be quiet on the weekends

Ensure you have some kind of inventory list with you when you do bring the stuff down.  Does NOT have to be anything fancy and a very good chance they won't even look at it, but best to be prepared.  Cheers

CanadaMontreal Consular Interview Questions

At the top right you will see REVIEWS:Embassy.....click on that, and then select CANADA and go from there--or do a search top right for Montreal interviews and you should find plenty!  Most people go early, so they get in and get out ASAP!!  Remember NO electronics of ANY kind, and no super big bags!!  Many use 1 of those Plastic accordion file folders to store everything--with passport and interview letter at the front for easy access!  And it is handy to keep everything sorted out for other immigration filings down the road....As well keep track of ALL trips out of the USA for periods longer than 24 hours as you will need to list those for the I-751 and if you go the USA citizenship route!!

And biggest thing to know--the elevator opens from the REAR at the designated floor!!  Best of luck

CanadaQuestion about POE, Activating CR-1 Visa and Sealed Envelope

Weekends tend to be slow on VJ.......You can go through whatever POE you wish.....If you do a search here on VJ, I recall many posting which ones they preferred, and some of those have been very recent, but I don't pay much attention to them,so I can't say off the top of my head

Back in 2004, we picked up our package right from the Consulate, so I can't help you there, but I'm sure others will.  I'm sure you wil have to open up the Loomis package as your passport is in it--and the actual DO NOT open package would be separate, but I 100% don't know!

Ensure you have a inventory list of the items your bringing down with you in the car--doesnt have to be anything special, 99% of the time they don't even check the contents of the vehicle

Best of luck

CanadaWhat does fiance need to accompany me on interview day?

He was able to be let in with his enhanced DL. They never even asked for his birth certificate!

Thank you for the good luck wish. The interview went great - APPROVED! Honestly, it was the easiest step out of this whole process.

It is the easiest part of the process if you are prepared  AND been totally honest here on VJ----usually the people who have the issues--and go on AP if they were born in a country that is not on good terms with the USA---which quite often they don't mention that here on VJ and then go on AP and are all surprised!  congrats

CanadaGetting aggravated with U.S. Consulate in Montreal

I keep my fingers crossed you guys get something booked soon. It's unbelievable how fast all of their appointments must have filled up. Apparently all of Canada wants to leave..lol

I can't believe they don't have Toronto doing these types of visas too. Makes no sense to me.

Why, prob because they don't have piles of staff at each consulate.  So yes there are multiple consulates in Canada, but doesn't mean they have a big consular section that handles visas

CanadaWill Christmas Holidays Create Delays at Montreal?

May slow down a tad as more people are on holidays!! I'm guessing they just assign fewer interviews closer to holidays, so really does not al that much if you do get a holiday!  Now if ur interview was right close to the actual cmas holiday season, it may cause problems

Canadamedical exam

You also want the medical to be as close to the interview as possible. The validity of the visa is from the medical, not the interview. It will also makes things easier for when you start the Adjustment of Status (AOS) because the medical is valid for a year. If you apply within a year, you can use the same results instead of paying for a new one.

The ones close to the Consulate are downtown, so bound to be more $$$......I know what I have done in the past is find the cheapest price on expedia or traveloity or kayak...and then just call the hotel directly as ask for their best rate, and sometimes can get it at a better rate

Flames9_RNMaleCanada2013-12-26 19:57:00
CanadaMontreal train station

At 1 time ( Dec 2004) there was a free hotel shuttle from the downtown train station, took you to many of the downtown hotels for free (just tip).......And ytou could (or hotel desk straff) could arrange for the return trip to the train station as well

I think it is no longer in operation, but there used to be bus (not a city bus) that went right from the airport to the downtown train station. Was around $24 round trip and you bought ur tickets just outside the arrivals gate!  It sort of worked in connection with that free hotel shuttle at the train station.

Hard to believe that was over 9 years ago now!  Time flies!!
