There was a VJ member that had a k1 visa and did go back to canada and come back to the usa a few times without the proper documents! THEN on one return trip to the USA she was DENIED. So she was stuck in Canada and had to start from square 1 with the k3 or cr-1!!

When me and my fiance got engaged I was living with one of my friends in an apartment. After we got engaged I moved back home to save money and my fiance came up and rented a uhaul and took everything that was in my apartment (bed, couches, washer/dryer, tv etc) back to Connecticut with him. He did not get hassled at all at the border and didn't have any problems.

This is why it's so hard to give a definitive answer to anything. laughing.gif

Stacey, I'm not going to bother trying to track down another thread that talked about their boyfriend doing the same thing but getting turned back and having to go and find public storage near the border somewhere so he could go home. It's in the K-1 forum if you want to do a search. Anyway, it'####### and miss. Some people get lucky, some do not.

exactly! the whole immigration thing is hit and miss, lol Just because one person is successful at something, dosnt mean its going to work out for you,lol Thats one of the huge frustrations. prime example is the one VJ member that had sole custody of her children, she had the court order yet she had no written affidavit from her ex, and she was successful, YET another VJ member had the exact same scenario, but was denied, pretty darn frustrating!!

Ya, u can bring stuff back in ur suitcases, keep in mind that airlines are paying close to the weights of each suitcase and it costs ya $$$$$ if ya go over.

Yes technically he shouldn't bring anything back to the USA in his car, but if it were I, I would throw in a few items!!

CanadaGetting injured in the states...
I probably cant explain it well, but Insurance companies pay LESS for a procedure than you would if you pay out of pocket. There was TV piece on how one fellow was upset that since he didnt have any health insurance, his heart operation cost him like $200,000, out of his pocket. BUT if he had insurance, the hospital would have only charged the insurance company something like $50,000. His thinking was hey, I should only have to pay $50,000!! I'm just happy that we have good health insurance coverage. My wife could go be a private contractor for what she does, they make alot more $$$, but no benefits, where as her federal job has excellent benefits. One thing one has to look for when looking for employment!

Before i took my wife to the ER, Iphoned ahead and made sure they accepted blue cross/blue shield! Same thing when u phone around for a Dr. One has to ensure they take your insurance, can be quite the pain!

My wife badly sprained her ankle a few yrs back! We went to the Emergency room. Waited there for like 3 hrs before we go into the ER. Dr looked at it for like 2 min and sent her off for Xrays. Of course when one a gal gets xrays, they want to confirm she isnt pregnant,so had to do a pregnancy test! That alone cost $60 I believe. I believe the bill came to over $1500.00, luckily we have insurance so only cost us $20 co pay!!

CanadaMedical Expenses for your exam?
Yep you pay out of pocket!! And some Doctors ONLY take hard cold cash--no cheques or credit cards! In one of your packets you will get a list of APPROVED doctors, and you have to see one of them! one can goto their family doctor and get the required vaccinations, usually cheaper that way. As well some doctors want the letter stating you require the medical, some don't care, all they want is your file #. List of approved doctors can be found here as well:

http://www.visajourn...mp;cty=Montreal Not sure how up to date it is, as I believe the one in Edmonton is no longer available. The medical is usually very painless. A quick physical, some questions, xrays (ensure you get the film, NOT the CD) and bloodwork to check for disease, which they are more concerned about than anything. Its usually very quick, like most doctors offices, most of ur time is spent waiting and waiting!! Welcome to VJ

CanadaMove to Vancouver for shorter wait time??
Keep in mind its not a given when it comes to transferring to Vancouver. For awhile it was quite popular and one didn't seem to require a valid reason. Vancouver said "come on down" Then it changed so one required a reason. A valid reason is moving to live with family or for work. So keep that in mind when you email and ask them if they would accept it. Best of luck

When I came back (flying) in June the US POE wanted my PASSPORT as well. I originally just handed them my greencard (as they have never even looked at my passport in previous trips, just greencard) and the POE officer asked for my passport. She looked through every page and even stamped it!!

I gave my parents my Cdn bank card. so if I got any cdn checks, just mailed them back!

Keep in mind, when one selects the desired rate you want from CH, its not a given that rate will ever come available! But I imagine you know that, lol

My parents gave me some $$$ a few yrs back! They checked with the bank about what their exchange rate was if they converted it their and put into travelers cheques, then immediately phoned me so I could check out the CH rate, and the CH rate was a tad better. I'm sure thats not always the case, but if one has CH, that option is always there, its totally free to set up. Enough of my CH stand, lol

Question is: What was the going exchange rate? Did you just look at the bank? or did you actually go online and check the market, because their is a difference.

Yes one can use their Cdn debit card and take the $$$ out, BUT watch out for the high fees and crappy exchange rate!

And yes payapal is another option, but beware, I believe they have had some security issues in ther past, and every now and then I get fake emails about my paypal acct--which i use for Ebay!!

CH is sort of a middleman! To use CH, you need a Canadian bank account AND an American bank account. CH makes money off the exchange rate, that rate is still better than what the bank is going to give you. One can tx $$ from Canada bank to your USA bank and vice versa, comes in handy when ur heading back to Canada for holidays! Keep in mind when u use your USA Credit card, many charge you an extra fee when using the credit card when outside the USA! Thus thats why I tx $$ back to Canada. Keep in mind when down the road when you want to send $$ from ur USA bank acct, to ur Cdn one, there is a very short process one has to do. I can't recall off the top off my head, but was easy. I just called them and they walked me through it, only took a few minutes.

One can always email them directly (or phone) and ask questions, they are normally very prompt at replying http://www.customhou...ompany/profile/

yes, CH takes a bit to set up, but it is all because of security precautions to protect you, which is a good thing!!

custom house does wires as well, but charge ya $$. if you do it electronically, its free. One sees the exchange rate prior to accepting the trade. if you don't like ti you can 1) cancel the transaction and try later, 2) hit refresh button and it may change,it may not, or change for the better or for worse, of course its only a minor change when u hit refresh,, but if ur trading thousands of $$, may make a difference. As well I belive you can enter the exchage rate you desire, and if it ever gets to that rate, I'm not sure if it does the transaction, or emails you stating ur desired rate is avaialble, I have never done it that way!

Registration is easy. Submit your online application. I do believe they require proof of ID, so you can either snail mail it in, fax it in, or scan and securely email it in (which I did) as well you have to submit your banking info by similar means. On the application, it will ask for the best time for them to phone you. Its a very quick phone interview just to confirm everything and for you to ask questions! It takes a bit of time, but not that long.

When you submit a trade, the transaction normally takes 3-4 BUSINESS days. I found 4 to be quite common, but this past June took 6 business days. i was a bit concerned, so I phoned them and in a matter of seconds I had a reason why it took a bit longer. they are awesome to deal with. if your ever in Victoria BC< their office is right downtown by the bus terminal, crystal gardens (if its still there??)

Others have used RBC, I guess RBC has banks in the USA as well. maybe one of them will pipe up. No clue if they charge fees or give a better exchange rate than CH

One can goto most USA banks and deposit a Canadian cheque, BUT it can give you soem huge headaches, such as:
1) the teller is clueless
2) some charge HIGH fees, one wachovia branch wanted to charge me $75 to cash a $100 cheque!! umm no thank you
3) Some banks will charge you NO fee, BUT the exchange rate they give you is far less than what CH will give you.
4) some banks will put up to a 10 day hold on your cheque. Wachovia did this at first, but then once they knew me, it was instantly credited

I seemed to do ok if I went to the SAME wachovia and saw the teller, but otherwise it was a nightmare, lol Thank god for CH, better exchange rate and service. I left my parents my CDn bank card. So if by chance I get a Cdn cheque, I just mail it back to them and they deposit it.

yep custom house!! been using it for years now. I even send $$ back to canada when im heading home. If you do a search on here for custom house, you should find a lot of good info. At 1 time I even jotted down the step by step guide on setting up a CH account. its not that hard and the staff is super friendly, and YES they do call you to verify it is you setting up the account!

CanadaSo many questions, so many confusing websites!
by the sound sof it,they dont really need to DCF as they have a year in Canada, so if they start their CR-1 process now, it should work out. Of course nothing is a given when it comes to immigration

As well keep in mind, once you have your interview and you have the visa, you dont have to activate it asap. One has up to 6 months to do that.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2008-07-26 15:03:00
CanadaSo many questions, so many confusing websites!
a cr-1 is a MULTIPLE entry visa, so your good to go. oce you get ur interview in Montreal they wil lmail the visa to you (its in your canadian passport,it takes up 1 page) You goto a USA port of EntrY (POE) and it will be "activated" A poe can be on land or at the airport, doesnt matter! With a CR-1, since it is a multiple entry, you could immediately turn around and head back to canada if u wish or at any time!!! A single entry visa such as the K1 (fiance visa) is a ONE time entry, so they are stuck in the USa until AP or finish AOS, but thats not ur problem. As wll with a CR-1 you can immediately work in the USA

http://www.visajourn...mp;page=compare shows the plus's and negatives of each visa!!

approx one month after u activatd ur cr-1, you will get the "greencard" inthe mail, looks like ur drivers license! Until that time the stamp in ur passport acts as ur greencard!!
