Cr-1 usually get their SSN fairly quickly!!

Depends where you live flames. I didn't apply for my SSN until AFTER I became a PR and it still took 2.5 months. There are a bazillion people where we live that is why.

I dont understand, As a CR-1 (not a k1, k3, or whatever, a cr-1 or could be a ir-1)one doesnt have to wait!! If u checked off the box it may or may not come. After 10-14 business days no SSN card, u simply head down to ur local SSN office!

I was in no hurry, so after 3 weeks, no ssn, so went to the office reapplied (downloaded the form from ssn.gov) and 1 week later, it was in my mailbox

Canadayayy!!!
1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3)keep ur response short and to the point, dont tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5)pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isnt going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didnt lie! Refer to #1

Best of luck

Go online later tonight and we'll finalize everything. biggrin.gif

Shite. I did not see this. Tonight we shall talk.'

I'm glad you guys got nice border guards. The one I got on my way back to the US after Labour Day Weekend was a chump! I handed him my GC and passport and he was like, "I don't need your passport and when you coem through the US border again, just give us your green card.."

I felt like saying, SON OF A B! What if I stole this green card? Don't you want to know who I am???

Thast funny!! When i came back to the USA through Toronto (plane) I purposely just gave the POE chick my greencard and she demanded my passport, lol

CanadaMoving to the US (U-Haul vs. Upack vs. ???)
When calling Uhaul, ensure u check their online website, sometimes ya can get cheaper rates by doing that!!

I had more than enough miles to go from Greenwood NS to Arlington VA, if I had not made a detour to Middletown RI. I just over a bit, and the guy didnt charge me for all my excess miles. I drove that uhaul truck pretty hard, 80 mph was a common # ,lol and I got around 10 mpg, I'm sure I could have got a lot better if I drove in an econmical manner!

CanadaMontreal Interview - Original copies needed?
Yes, since ur a cr-1/ir-1 u already sent in your originals 9as u stated) so u are GOOD TO GO!! bring your copies with you as back up! Some people like me get carried away and purchase 2 originals, lol ,but not required. At the Mtl Consulate they hand you back the originals and some of the paperwork to verify things are correct (ur address hast changed, etc--if it has, you can change it then) At the end they will give you most of your originals back to keep! I think the only one of mine they kept was the RCMP police check!

I stated, they automatically DEDUCT 25% off for Cdn income tax! Now do you have to report it to IRS, i do believe so, but Canada/USA do have a tax treaty, so you should not get double taxed, but you still have to report it. At the moment cant recall the forms you fil out!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2008-10-13 08:46:00
CanadaEI from Canada in States
no for 2009 (wel u can if u want depends if it works to YOUR benefit) they automatically deduct 25% off for taxes!

With regards to EI, doesn't hurt to apply, all they can do is deny ya!

I'm not sure, but the reason given for her denial of her EI claim was that she quit to far in advance. I can't recall who it was--but its mentioned in the EI thread at the very top

It is not a MUST to have the "moving to the USA to be with spouse" on ur ROE, was not on mine!! And one can't quit their job too far in advance. If you quit too soon, you could be denied, as one member on VJ was

"Here" is Bermuda in this case. I mostly refer to Canada as 'home" though I've spent about equal time in both countries.

I was born in Halifax. I moved to Bermuda almost immediately. Then at 14 I moved to Ontario and stayed there until I was 30. Now I'm back in Bermuda.

I consider myself Canadian far more than Bermudian. My current viewpoints were influenced most by my life in Ontario (Ottawa, Guelph and K-W).

Damn.... I realize that I just revealed my age....
