Holy smokes. They sure don't make it easy on people, do they? They have to fly to Montreal for their medical AND their interview. Wow. That's pretty much a week in Montreal. While I do love it there, this is certainly not the time of year to be spending time in that fair (freezing cold) city. LOL

Could be worse--could have to goto Toronto and be forced to go to a Leafs game!!

Funny how some enjoy freedom, but not willing to sacrifice for it. As it stands now, women can't be drafted.

I tend to think of that as sexist. I really do.

Women have fought for the right to be considered equal in all aspects of life, including the military, and yet... women aren't forced to sign up for the draft. We don't have a draft, obviously, but the point remains that if it was reinstated, women would not be considered as possible draftees.

Women weren't originally considered because of gender-based thinking at the time. It was assumed that men would be better at warfare while the women stayed home. Today, it's a little different and in most areas of life, a woman can do whatever a man can.

Because of this, I fail to see how women can demand equal rights without signing up for the draft, just like men. You can't be fully equal unless you take both the good and the bad.

Well, as I understand it, sexual inequality is rampant in the US military. Typically, women who do serve are typically in support roles and not in active combat. Despite the fact that some women desire these positions. Military logic is just strange sometimes.

As far as I know, women are allowed to take on air combat roles. In other words, they can be pilots (or naval aviators) and go into combat that way. Honestly, I think that's a hell of a lot better than being a soldier on the ground. If you're a pilot, not only are you a commissioned officer, but you can actually get a shower and a decent bed to sleep in after the mission.

Aircrew is the way to go!! i was aircrew on the Cp 140 Aurora (P3C) Worked the electronics on the plane. Air Force treats their personnel soo much better. I did the Infantry for 3 years, navy for 9, Air Force wins hands down, lol

Not sure on how to take that comment. I'm sure those brave soldiers that past away in Afghanistan had a lot more than a good slap shot!! They gave the Ultimate sacrifice and are missed by many!! Many of these soldiers sacrifice time away from their loved ones, and ask very little in return.

BMI measures weight-to-height ratio, and so it's conceivable that a big strong guy could be pushing 30 BMI easily, without being seriously out of shape.

At 1 time in the Cdn forces one had to be within their healthy BMI range to get accepted into the Forces. Was simple, not in that BMI range, you didn't get an offer. But that was ruled unconstitutional or something like that. And during basic training,if you could not reach the minimum levels you got extra Physical training, which was probably a good thing! As those people were out exercising, and the rest of us were cleaning, lol Not sure who were the suckers in that situation, lol

Of course "volunteers" are preferred. In this crappy economy, I would bet enlistment is up!! I have read articles and know personally of a few cases where soldiers were thinking of gettign out at the end of their contracts, but not now!!

I think many take for granted their freedom as well as the people that "volunteer" and sign up for their countries Armed Forces! Their is a price to pay for freedom. If all of a sudden (not going to happen) people no longer sign up for the Armed Forces, then what? Countries still need an Armed Forces to protect that freedom. Sure it would suck if a draft was activated, but the consequences may be worse if "enemy forces" took over your country!!

Huge difference between it doesn't apply to the Air force, than "yes it applies, but the Air force doesn't do it! A person in his position isn't going to be battling with a weapon, he is going to be dealing with the mentally wounded. But it is something one should look into. Recruiters tend to "bend" the truth at times.

Why do people have to sign a contract to be in the Military?

Or rather, why is it so stringent. I mean say you sign a contract to work with NASA for 3 years and you decide you don't want to work there anymore after 2 years. Chances are you and NASA will come to some agreement - I mean they might sue you, but probably not.

With military organizations you are labelled a 'deserter', you can be charged. Also, as mentioned above, they can force you to stay even after you have served your contract.

I was just thinking about this the other night.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just pondering.

I agree with a contract!! I spent 15 yrs in the Cdn Military, Army, Navy and Air Force. The military spends $$$ on your training, and you get pretty good benefits, so it is only fair that you have to serve for so long! I remustered to the Air Force (from navy) Then shortly after met my current wife, and I sort of wanted out right away! But they just spent $$$ on training me, so understandingly, they wanted a certain amount of time from me,lol, which i completely understood. So I sucked it up and did the "time" Yes, poor me stuck living in one of the greatest countries on earth, lol. understood their position, it was all very civil, and in the end, my CO let me out a few months early.

I have no sympathies for deserters. They knowingly signed the dotted line. many of these people didn't join to serve their country, they only joined to gain the benefits (education/healthcare) I do feel bad for the people that honored their contract, then have the military extend it, that isn't fair!

And yes the USA military has a certain amount of time after ones contract has expired and one is out to cal you back to service!! During my EMT course 1 of my pales was a former Marine nearing the end of that time period when they could cal him back. I can't recall how long it was, but he was praying he didn't receive a letter or call!!

I went the Cr-1 route and never had a problem visiting, and I visited monthly to DC from Halifax. All depends on the POE officer. One has to pick what Visa works best for you. In reality, I could have went the k1 route, I have been here since Dec 2004 and never worked, but was in no hurry, not as if I'm living in a 3rd world country, lol

Welcome to VJ, were a mellow bunch in the Cdn forum. if u want to see rude posts, idiots, head on over to the main off topic forum. It wil blow your mind on how some people think.

Check out the WIKI pages http://www.visajourn...x.php/Main_Page at the very top, as well as our own Canada WIKI page, http://www.visajourn...ndex.php/Canada Trailmix and others have put a lot of effort into it.

As well check out http://www.visajourn...mp;page=compare it compares the k1, k3, cr-1 visas. Sometimes the fastest route is not the best route for that individual! And what is frustrating during this process, is at times it makes no sense!! a k1 could take 6 months, or take over a year!!. Best of luck

Yep for the CR-1! If ya went the K3 route, since your in Alberta, you would goto Vancouver for the interview. I dont really keep up with the time frames, but at 1 time (probably still is) Vancouver used to be a lot faster at handing out the k1, k3 interviews than Montreal. Keep in mind, there are differences in the K3 and cr-1 visa, so one should educate themselves on those differences. This link compares the + and - of the visas: http://www.visajourn...mp;page=compare

Cr-1 is a superior visa, and it costs less than the k3. But the k3 "SHOULD" be faster, but not always the case. back in 2004 we did the cr-1 and k3 at the same time. Theoretically the k3 should have been completed first, but nope! I was already living in the USA when I got the NOA stating the k3 had been approved. Look over that link and see what fits you better. Is getting to the USA faster more important(which th ek3 might not be faster!!), or being able to work asap more important????? and less paperwork with the CR-1, so less frustration, lol

CanadaCanadian Mom - American Daughter and I-130
the interview for a k3 would be in Canada as well--Vancouver or Montreal (depends where u live in Canada). All cr-1'ers ALL goto Montreal for interview! The Cr-1 comes with "work authorization" Welcome to VJ

Its ur money, as long as you make an informed decision, your good to go. For some strange reason,I thought they didn't allow one to do the k3,cr-1 at same time anymore??????. I know thats what we did back in 2004--cr-1 was done months before the k3 was even approved, lol Thought they changed that though?? I'm probably wrong.

Majority of people visit with NO problems at all, while the visa process is ongoing. The ones that do,most likely didnt bring any ties to Canada with them to show proof that thery would be returning. And soem people just become jerks, when questioned, lol so of course they will get denied (not saying this pertains to anyone on VJ,lol)

NO, u can keep ur RRSP open. But u have to notify the institution that is holding them. They wil sebnd you some paperwork to fill out! As well each yr, u have to inform the IRS and that is done by form 8891. very easy form to fill out!

k1 is a fiance visa, so if he came to Canada and u got married, ur no longer a "fiance" so yes u would have to start with a k3 or cr-1!!
With the k1, once u get approved and do the interview, move to the USA, you have to get married in the USA(within 90days of activating the visa).

I'm sure others will chime in about him moving to Canada, there is another website similar to VJ that has info on Canada immigration http://www.roadtocanada.com/forums/
