Canadians rarely get asked for evidence at the interview and if they do , showing pictures is usually suffice, and yes they return them to you! Yes, I was one of those people that brought a lot of evidence in my plastic 13 pocket accordion binder, lol few picture, letter from her mother, travel receipts, etc. They never asked to see any of it. The interview for 99.9999 of Canucks is the easiest part. The actual interview itself is normally very fast, like under 10 minutes, and those 10 minutes are not spent answering questions, but the interviewer going over ur paperwork, plus explaining the visa. All this build up, and its normally very easy! Best of luck

I must admit, I don't care for Deadppols writing style at times, BUT it is probably that, just his style of writing. It is hard to get one's "true" point across in a forum. We do not see one's body language (which is huge) nor do we hear one's tone (again, very huge) We all have different experiences with dealing with people from different countries, some positive, some bad. We all like to think we Cdns are perfect and we know that is not true (only Saskatchewaner's Albertan's are, lol) And I know we all like to think that since this is the Canadian forum, we can say whatever we wish about other countries and that only Canadian eyes are viewing, but that isn't the case. Everyone is entitled to our opinion, and sometimes they way we all phrase things isn't appropriate, we could do it better, but this is a forum, not a school paper, so we tend to just peck away at the keypad, and then hit "add reply" without checking for spelling mistakes, or take a step back and ask ourselves how will someone else perceive my reply? We just hit the button like a monkey waiting for their banana after completing a task. So lets all take a step back at the personal attacks (which is very little on this Cdn forum) and consider the whole picture. I'm sure if we all sat down at a pub, we could have a great conversation about this topic (and others) Happy New Years!!

I agree with you to a point.

I actually do, mostly, think about my posts and there are many times I will write something out and not post it - simply because it is not going to add anything to the conversation or because it may be too critical etc. (that's just me, I don't expect or demand anyone else do this - i'm just saying it's what I do)

Yes people from other countries read this forum, no it is not 'Canadians only' and shouldn't be.

I hear ya trailmix!!! When one posts negative stuff all the time, that poster's comments go by my wayside. Makes one wonder why so much negativity! Oh well, not my problem!!!!

Unlike you I am absolutely sure that Deadpool knows exactly what reaction he will get when he posts certain things here and I also believe he enjoys watching the fallout - possibly a good reason why I should stop replying to his posts at all - however, I probably won't.

Who knows, probably depends where u go in the world. I have traveled a lot with the Cdn Armed Forces and always received very well. A few times they thought I was American, but once I informed them I was a Canuck, the service was better. I recall 1 time port visit in Indonesia, lot of American sailors wanted Cdn flag pins, so they would get better deals, lol.

Simplified Passport Renewal for Canadians in U.S. / Renouvellement de passport simplifié pour Canadiens aux É-U
From Connect2Canada / Lien Canada

Canadians living in the United States will now be able to apply for a Canadian passport by mail using the new, simplified passport renewal process. The process allows eligible applicants to apply using a shorter application form, without a guarantor, and without submitting proof of Canadian citizenship and supporting identification. Renewal applications are, however, subject to all current security verifications. The applicant must provide a completed form, including the current fee, two new photos, and their most recent passport.

In widening the eligibility for the simplified renewal process, Passport Canada aims to improve accessibility to Canadian passport services and increase client satisfaction.

A full list of eligibility requirements and the new form are available at www.passportcanada.gc.ca.

Advice for visiting the USA while your visa application is in process

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3)keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lying and have been trained to find them!
5)pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Best of luck

In some cases, there doesnt seem to be much time difference between the k1, k3 or cr-1 visas! The Cr-1 can be a lot less stressful visa than the others, as there are no questions if ur able to work, or leave the USA, or able to get EI. But the situation differs for everyone!! I came on a cr-1 didnt want to worry about AOS, EAD, etc etc

Sometimes the k1 takes a year!!! and yes just because one has a SSN card does mean ur legally able to work.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2009-01-03 14:11:00
CanadaClarification on options
One has 6 months(after the interview) to "activate" the visa, which is down at the POE (port of entry), with the k1, ur 90 days to get married starts when u "activate" it

Since ur In Ontario, time wise, the k3 and cr-1 run about the same time, so ur better off to go with the CR-1!

Keep in mind with immigration, it doesn't always make sense. Yes, the k1 should be the fastest of the 3 visas ur discussing, but thats NOT always the case. faster is not always better, lol (that's what she said, lol)

Look over the visas, and decide which one suits u the best: http://www.visajourn...mp;page=compare

Some of us have gone to the USA and gotten married, then started the process. You don't have to wait till u get back to Canada, get married, and then send in the appropriate paperwork. Filling out the paperwork isnt that hard, just take ur time and do it, and if ya have any questions, ask on VJ. Ensure you checkout the Canadian VJ WIKI pages, probably anwers all ur questions right there!! http://www.visajourn...ndex.php/Canada or the regula r WIKI http://www.visajourn...pecial:AllPages

CanadaRRSP's....another money question.
If ur a Cdn resident with zero income, im pretty sure u would get hit a lot more than 25%, at least thats what i recall reading somewhere--as throughout the years, you have been able to use those RRSP's as a deduction! I could be wrong,. I no longer have any, lol
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2008-09-10 12:26:00
CanadaRRSP's....another money question.
if u cash them in,while ur still a Cdn resident, i believe u will get taxed more!!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2008-09-10 10:48:00
CanadaRRSP's....another money question.
If you leave the RRSP's in Canada (which u can do) every yr when u file ur USA taxes you fill out form 8891 (google it) Easy form to fill out. Pretty much what ur doing is notifying the IRS that you have them. The IRS wont tax you on them (until u take the $$$ out) but some have reported that some States will tax you on them, so one has to check with ur State laws!

As well you have to notify the institution that is over looking ur RRSP's and tel lthem to treat you as a Non-resident of canada. They will send you a form to fill out (W-something,lol).

And if you cash the RRSP's out (believe its best to do as a non resident) they will automatically subtract 25% for taxes. The whole thing can be a bit confusing, so its best to find a competent tax dude that is very well aware of Canada/USA tax situations--more so if ur taking the $$$ out!! But if ur just leaving it in canada, then just form 8891 is required. Soem good info can be found at: http://forums.serbin...9e0066bcbee3f79 if u search for FORm 8891 on there, you should get a lot of info.

neiks,

Can you resgister things like expensive jewelry, laptops, etc before you travel to be sure you don't get dinged by customs on the way back?

In Bermuda, before you go on vacation, you go to the customs office with your things and they give you a form with descriptions and serial numbers. When you come back after your trip, you show the customs official the form if he asks about anything. Almost everyone goes through that procedure because customs officials are very strict in Bermuda.

Congratulations on the "official" engagement!

Listen to neiks, who is a Canadian Border Official.

When Gene and I got officially engaged, Gene proposed in the Edmonton Airport. He had a hat on he had made saying "Will You Marry Me?" He was lined up for Customs, and was role-playing in his head the actual proposal when it came to his turn. He was very nervous, shaking etc. The guy asked what his business was, and Gene said to visit my g/f blahblahblah. The guy made a comment about Gene's hat, and Gene very excitedly told him about his proposal as soon as he made it through Customs. Well, they sent him into Secondary, and after going through every inch of his items, asked him about the proposal again, and then asked him if he had a ring. Gene said yes, right here! Guy asked to see it, Gene pulls it out, still in the box, and the guy takes it and says..."very pretty, HOWEVER, you did not declare it!". I don't see it here at all on your declaration form. Gene said, "I didn't know I had to declare it". The guy said "why did you think that? it's a gift isn't it?" Gene said, "yes, but it's a gift of love". Guy said...doesn't matter. Who's moving where? Gene said, she'll be moving to the US when she gets a visa and he told the guy all about it. The guy said, well, hope you have the bill for that ring, because you're going to be charged the GST on it and I need to know how much it cost. Well, Gene didn't have the bill on him, but told him, and the guy did charge him the GST on the ring, and gave him a receipt. He also got a tongue lashing about bringing goods into the country, and not declaring them. blink.gif

As an aside...Gene came out a half hour after everyone else was off the plane and by this time I'm freaking. He had to come through this barrier, so I couldn't go right to him at first. As we started to walk towards each other, Gene was bending and bobbing his head so I would see his hat. I was looking at him thinking...what a goof! What's he doing?! He was too far away to read the words on the hat! When he got to me, and I read the hat, he got down on one knee and said, please marry me! I was crying, and said yes...and Gene said, hurry, put the ring on before they take it from me!!! laughing.gif

QUOTE (trailmix @ Jan 8 2009, 12:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well, after chatting with TD bank U.S. for some time, including their mortgage department, I decided to open an account with them. I just like the idea of having a bank that is affiliated with our Canadian bank - well all owned by the same company anyway.

He mentioned to me, the mortgage guy, that basically we will be on equal credit rating footing, when we have 1 year of credit history in the U.S. - they can also check our Canadian credit if need be.

Plus, you can wire money between your TD account and your TD U.S. account and they will refund the fee for that.

On the downside, they do charge for cheques to be printed, after your initial cheques and although they don't charge for you using other people's atm's - they really just refund all the charges at the end of the month. It doesn't really matter to me, just seems a little messy for record keeping purposes - but we shall see.

Tomorrow I will be closing my RBC Canada bank account (staying with TD)

I also opened a savings account with ING direct. In spite of the fact that they hold money, which is odd, it is a savings account and the interest rate is pretty good.

Yes ING does "hold" your fund for a few days when you first transfer it over. I have never had a problem as we use it as a savings account
