CanadaPolice Certificate
wow $85 is the most $$$$ I have seen on here for a police background search. No criminal record = no fingerprinting. Criminal record = fingerprinting required!!

CanadaEntered US through Pearson/TO on Feb 12. No GC or Welcome letter yet!!
It takes around a month or so, so your still in the window. Your stamped visa in ur passport is good for 1 year for re entry into the USA if u travel. And if ya havent recieved ur SSN yet, go and apply at the SSN office. You can download the required form at SSN.gov and bring ur cdn passport with you.

CanadaGreen Card Interview-Any hidden costs?
No the OP is talking about the CR-1 interview in Mtl, which for a cr-1, there are no fees. If they DCF, I belive that is a different story, but for a regular CR-1, no extra $$$

Prob no 100% answer to this--I know others on VJ that have, but again, all comes down to the POE officer

CanadaHow do you know where to apply for a SSN?
You DON"T have to wait til ur greencard comes in the mail!!! You have ur used visa in ur passport, that is good for one yr, so bring that to ur local SSN office. Usually wait 10 or so business days until your in the system, but u can go earlier. You can download the form off of SSN.gov to speed up the process at the office.

Yes, many of us checked off the box on that 1 form (think it was ds-230) but it rarely ever comes just by doing that, you end up going to the office and re-applying. Once I went to the office and applied,it came in the mail 1 week later.

Yes you can work right now! Your employer may want to see ur SSN #, but explain the situation, and I'm sure it would be fine. I imagine most employers dont even know what a CR-1 visa is! Best of luck

CanadaFor all the hockey fans here
I was told by my mother--"if I have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all!" lol But he does look cute, and the canucks are playing well right now--except for the 5-1 loss last night. My Flames are sucking right now, lol!! Even the Caps lost last night!!! My wife, who lived in S.America for many yrs growing up (American parents worked down there), can even skate, very well actually!! She actually played hockey for a bit, but the womens ice times are late at night, which doesn't work out too well when one is up before 0500 each day!! Great pics

If u waited until June 2nd to enter the USA and activate the visa, you could then get a 10 yr greencard!! Whats a few more months, that means more tim hortons!! lol

haha...well...every day seems too long for us so we would rather have the month together than wait until June 2nd for the 10 yr. greencard. We rather deal with whatever paperwork they throw our way than be apart for another month... biggrin.gif

With that said, do you know what happens when our 2nd anniversary mark hits? Will they send us more form to fill out? How do we proceed to get the 10 yr. greencard?

Thanks!

If you enter the USA prior to ur 2 yr anniversary--ur stuck with the CR-1 visa, which is good for 2 yrs! That 2 yrs starts on the date u enter the USA. Don't worry, on ur greencard, it will have an expiratory date on it. 90 days (not 3 months, lol) prior to that expiry date on the greencard, you can file the I-751, which is super easy to do! And no it does NOT have to be exactly 90 days, lol!! Just NOT before 90 days, and NOT after the expiry date! But thats down the road. But it is easy, but does require more fingerprinting, but in majority of cases no interview, you will then end of up with a 10yr greencard. As well 3 yrs after u enter the USA on the CR-1,you become eligible to apply to be a USA citizen ( well 90 days before that 3 yrs) and no, you dont have to become a USA citizen, or you can do it anytime after 3 yrs, all up to you, and no you don't loose your cdn citizenship!1 blah blah blah!! lol Cheers

I would head back for another short trip on the CP 140 Aurora any day!!

I have no problems leaving the spouse and heading back to Canada alone, lol Up until now, i have spent nearly a month back in SK every summer. School comes to an end this May, so have to be an adult again!

few yrs ago when Istil resided in the USA, we had our cell phones through USA AT&T, and we had the canada package and there was no roaming fees, just ur regular $$ for the package. Was free minutes evenings and weekends.

CanadaHow do you call your Canadian?
My parensts back in Sk have an international long dist program and I dont think it costs that much. So when I want to call them, I just call, let it ring twice, hang up, and they call me back. yep Im cheap, lol I see no need for me to pay an extra fee on my end when they all ready have it.

Weird! The staff is manned by USA foreign service--Not Canadians, so more than likely dont speak french, lol.

Pretty sure it will have to be in English. And somewhere it will have to say it was a Canada wide search (some just have a box that has to be checked off)

and the forms can look different, even if it is from the RCMP. Mine was a RCMP one, and it was FREE,but others that went to different RCMP detachments had to pay a fee and, they looked different as well. There is no consistency.

CanadaDifference in Attitudes
not sure about in Canada, but here in the USA, one can call AT&T, and they provide translators on the phone. Hospitals here use it quite often. Most hospitals that i have worked at, require a translator to have official medical translation training. AT&T provides that services and works quite well, of course it isn't free!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2009-02-01 10:29:00
CanadaDifference in Attitudes
Same goes for the USA, not exactly sure how drastic it is. But I know there are many here that were doctors back in their country, but it is not fully recognized here in the USA. One see's many what they call "first assists" in the OR, that were Dr.s back in their country. Yes, some should have their qualification follow them, some should not, not all schools/training is equal, and yes, some schools are superior. I know one of the beefs my sisters have (they are both RN's in canada) is that their hospital hires foreign nurses, and yes their skills are great, BUT they can't speak English!! How would you feel as a patient, you have this RN (or Dr) but cant communicate effectively.

Here's one more question for today dry.gif

For the interview portion of things, do both people have to attend the interview? I'm just thinking for costs sake and schedule's sake because I am in Alberta and have to travel to either Vancouver or Montreal, does my fiance have to accompany me? Or is it something I can do by myself?

Thanks for the great answers guys kicking.gif

Which visa are you applying for, Jennleah? That will dictate which Consulate you go to.

Ur interview will be in Vancouver---which is good--as they are normally faster than Montreal at handing out interviews

CanadaInterview Question
For moral support sure, but its not a requirement. Mine wasn't there. If ya read some of the forums from other countries,it is strongly advised that the USA spouse attend, but thats not the case in Vancouver or Montreal. Interview is normally the easiest part of the whole process

CanadaFeelin' kinda down...
My ex had a similar situation yrs back at her office! She was the secretary, had been there for a short while (maybe a yr) and they needed a new office manager! She wasn't going to say anything, but eventually she did speak with the boss, and was a good thing to, as her boss didn't think she interested in the job, so if she had not spoken up, she would not have gotten the position. If ya want something in life, gotta stand up! best of luck

Every time I hear the O'Canada being played I get goose bumps! I love it, and it means a lot to me!! But do I know all the words to it, no!! Every time I go into this 1 post office here in VA, i seem to get this 1 teller, and I usually always have my Hockey Night in canada hat one--or last time I had with me Don Cherry's latest book with me, and the postie picked up on it. he always says that if I can sing the complete version of O'Canada my shipping would be free, lol

if people don't want to stand for the song, then haul ur #### out of Canada and stop enjoying the freedoms others have provided

Congrats on the weight loss, super job!! 1 of my sisters is a RN Diabetes coordinator in Calgary. I am in a similar situation, I have been in the USA since Dec 2004 and never really worked, fortunate to be in a situation where I could goto school and not have to worry about working because of my wife's job! I always get a kick out of the question "Doesn't it belittle you to know your wife makes more than you?" Hell no, more the merrier, lol But my free ride comes to end soon, as school will be over, and back to the real world! I have no real wisdom to pass on, except to talk to ur husband and go from there. I think you already volunteer, but I understand ya want to put some $$$$$ towards the family income. Don't you get a pension from the Cdn govt?? During my EMT B course, we had a lot of older people on it, then they would volunteer at the local fire hall/ambulance! Most had a blast that i talked with! Best of luck, and keep smiling
