CanadaSetting the record straight.....
No one can GUARANTEE that her entry will be successful! It all depends on the POE officer! I traveled monthly to the USA during my cr-1 process and NEVER had a single problem, and most Canadians don't. But some get hauled into secondary before they are allowed to carry on AND some do get denied entry! All one can do is be prepared! Bring ties to Canada, such as letter from employer, lease agreement, visa paperwork etc etc! See my signature below!

CanadaObtaining credit in the US

I had no problem getting a credit card once I had a job for two months. Had previously issued SSN from 2001 but no credit history and yet Chase decided to approve me followed by AmEx.

Currently have higher CC limits than my husband - he just does not get that he can't go over his credit limit, took me forever to pay down his card. Plan is to get his CC closed and move him to my AmEx acct.

With the recent CC legislation it seems to be more difficult to get a CC you want - I tried out for the new card from Chase but was rejected due to not enough history (I have been here for 3 years) but great credit report score. Go figure.

So heads up!

Forgot to add: USAA seems to have good rates and low APRs for military members. We're thinking of moving our banking with them. Non-members can also join - I think it's a type of credit union.

USAA opened some stuff to non-military people as well, not sure what though. As well you (or husband) doesn't have to be military, one can tag along ur parents. We got our USAA a a few yrs ago from my wifes parents, who piggy backed off his fathers, lol USAA has been great to deal with. I love how one can scan a cheque on ur home computer and viloa, the $$$ is in ur acct and no need to mail in the cheque!! Love it.

CanadaObtaining credit in the US

I am obviously not listed on his card in one of those magical "ways." The account manger inferred that even as a secondary holder I would be able to build up credit and eventually get my own card within six months. Guess she was wrong. :bonk:

I'm pretty blasé about credit here...I left most of my financial stuff in Canada.....working on convincing my husband to eventually move back one day.

ya, i feel the same way, its not a big deal, as my wife has good credit. Took me some time to gain a credit card when i first moved down. And its not always easy to take over bills as some companies do try and look at ur credit rating--which of course u dont have, lol so then they want u to put down a deposit!

I have been here since dec 2004, and just started to work last Sept.

CanadaObtaining credit in the US
As I stated above, there are a few different ways one can be on another persons credit card, some of those "ways" do not do nay good in gaining you any credit. I forget the "term" one has to use to get the credit to follow you. And I imagine some credit cards just don't allow piggybanking. Another thing I was told, is that 1 may have a high credit #, but if its only been for a short duration, that too doesnt much help you. The fun and games in moving to a different country

CanadaObtaining credit in the US
Few yrs now, maybe 4,lol that suzie orman financial guru chick stated Credit card companies were getting rid of that loop hole--gaining credit by piggybacking onto anothers credit card, but they haven't yet!! One has to use the proper WORDING when it comes to being on another persons credit card! I can't recall what it is. Sorry, not much of a help, lol

99% of the time they mail them out, BUT a few have asked to pick it up same day or next and their wish was granted. So why not ask, all they can do is say no!! One still has to buy the envelope as most likely they will say no! BUT if you do not ask, you will never know!

There have been others on VJ that have done it. But once again, one just can throw down a blanket statement and say "yes you can" just because others did. Once again, it comes down to the good old fashioned POE officer! He/she can say ye or no.

CanadaTrip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance

Your best bet is to purchase the upgraded tickets which allow rescheduling or reimbursement. (Unless you're flying with Southwest.... they do it free of charge on any ticket.) Anywho.... contact the airline and ask them how to handle it. Trip insurance usually just covers medical emergencies and such. Or check the airline's policies online.

I wonder how that would work with the above, as one has already checked in! One goes through security/POE after check in!

CanadaTrip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance
I went the CR-1 route and visited my wife in DC just prior to my interview, never had a problem. I had ties to Canada with me, but they never asked for them.

Regarding travel insurance, your best to call the company up and ask them if they cover a denied entry into the USA

CanadaQuestion about Custom House Transactions
of course it could vary from bank to bank!! In Canada I have president choice, and in the USA I have USAA. As long as i do it Electronically (EFT) I get charged no fees but either bank! But yes, if one wants the $$$ quicker, one has to go the Wire route and yes then your banks will charge a fee.

An EFT transaction takes anywhere from 3-7 business days, again depends on the bank and sometimes the very 1st transaction with an account can take a bit longer

CanadaHow & When to pay departure tax once u leave Canada
Think it all depends on what type of RRSP it is?? I had left my RRSP's in Canada for awhile--wish I had left them alone---One reports them to The IRS via form 8891. IRS wont tax you if u leave them alone (not until u take them out) BUT some states may tax you, even if you leave them in Canada!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2010-06-06 10:29:00
CanadaHow & When to pay departure tax once u leave Canada
When u file ur Cdn 2010 taxes, there is a place on the front page of the tax forms that states something along the lines of when you ceased to be a resident of Canada, jot down the POE date there. If your using a computer program, it will do the calculations for you. You may or may not have to pay any $$$

Flames9_RN-That's a good idea about the insurance thing!....I'll definitely have to ask my husband to inquire about that....Lol..$2 seems better to pay than $100+....! Did they give you any problems with the insurance thing when you used it?

Update on the phone situation..

My husband called up verizon again last night.....(lol..the bill is in his name...)
And had problems with the automated system...
Apparently they couldn't recognize his quiet voice when he was trying to say "agent", to speak to a live person instead of a machine....
So then he started swearing (which is quite rare for him to do) at the automated system...
And hung up the phone..
Lol..Apparently someone on the other end must have heard...
And called us back....
Said they would get on to fixing the next morning...
And so..We got another phone call this morning...
And saw the trucks outside, parked next to the neighbour's cows...

Apparently there was a shortage in the system outside....From the recent rainstorms...
They also said that since it was an outside problem...
They would fix it for FREE...
(lol..I'll see it on the next bill is when I believe it..)
Lol..As long as it's fixed and as long as they don't charge us a ridiculous amount for it..So be it then...

Lesson learned..If all else fails...A little swearing at the automated system helps........

And let's just hope this doesn't happen again when it rains!

And yes, I still don't like verizon....Sigh...If only I can cancel the phone service......

Ant

P.S. As for dogs and other animals....
Yes, definitely adopt from a shelter.....Animals in shelters need good and loving homes! (L)

Most puppies that are in pet stores come from Puppy mills!! Just google puppy mils, not a happy situation! If your looking for a pure breed, take ur time and find a good reputable breeder, many of just are in it for the $$$ and are almost as bad as puppy mills@

We have verizon, and our service has been good, BUT, i didnt know it until it happened, but somehow we signed up for some type of "insurance" with them! So each month we pay like $2, but if they come to our house to fix anything, i don't get charged! Found that out a few yrs back when they had to come and fix something. I was expecting a bill and when i called to inquire about it, she told me i had that "insurance" thingy, lol

Yeaaaah. I took like 3 anti histamines because that's all I've got.
There's not really an over the counter prednisone so... well I'm okay now. Swelling's pretty much gone and I can breathe normally again.

1 needs to live as well! As time goes on ur body may take stronger and stronger reactions to whatever ur allergic too! Don't be a guy (stubborn, lol) and head to the Emergency room, call 9-1-1 if u have to!!! have to look in my nursing books, but I think one as to be able to breathe to survive! I could be wrong! Better to go in to debt then to be buried 5 ft under the ground! Of course 1 is going to have to pay for the funeral--so one is in debt either way!! Best to be alive and enjoy the debtness!! Hospitals can work out payment plans!! As well contact ur local medical/nursing schools, many times they put on FREEEEEEE clinics! Nursing schools usually have a NP there!! The nursing students do the hands on stuff, then u see the NP (Nurse practitioner.) These free clinics are not well advertised, so you have to do the foot work!

In-laws,lol!! My ex's inlaws were weird!! She was a medical worker, not sure if she was a tech, lpn or RN, ya weird that I wouldnt know that, lol But what ever---------Her husband (father n law at time) cut his finger big time and bleeding like a sieve---She would NOT drive him to the hospital, he drove himself, lol Like who does that????? My ex's brother was a druggie!! His wife would have guys over!! Thats all I will say about that, lol Belive it or not, my ex was normal, we just grew apart, that happens when one dates since high school. As 1 matures, your outlook on life can differ, not a big deal, we departed on good terms.

I laugh with my inlaws, how it must feel for them----They send their daughter to great private schools, Masters from Georgetown and she brings home Cdn sailor, which was transferring to the Cdn Air Force. What is she thinking??? lol

I'm sorry, that really sucks. My ex's brother was a druggie and he would steal from his parents--and they never really came to the reality that he had a problem. I recall 1 time they came back from vacation (he stayed home) and a bunch of stuff was missing. He stated someone broke in, ya right, lol they found most of the stuff at the local pawn store!! Back in my navy days, things wouldgo missing, and this was while 1 was out at sea, so you knew it had to be one of ur ship mates. Back in the not so politically correct days--they dealt with thieves a lot better--dropped a hatch on the fingers!! And those hatches are HEAVY!!!! I hate thieves!! Id shoot them!! At the hospital where i work, I tell all my pts if possible send all belongings home with a loved one, even though were an honest bunch, lol Before xmas we had 1 pt come in that was Super confused/disorientated, he had over $40,000 in CASH on him!! and he got back all of it,lol No one wanted to touch it, not even security, but they did in the end, sealed it and put in safe.

Hope u find ur rings!! If one can't prove they stole it, hard to say what route to take. You could ask them if they saw the rings, or if they saw the rings and put it in their pocket to keep so they wouldn't get lost, more or less ask them in a way that ur not accusing them, but in a way that sounds like they were trying to help you, if ya catch my drift. Just maybe the rings will magically appear!!
