cheapest way from airport to downtown mtl is the city bus!! http://answers.yahoo...26181440AAptcMF But I believe you have to do some transfers!!!

Next best option is L'eurobus. If u buy ur return ticket at same time it is $26 ttl@@ Big bus picks u up at airport, just outside arrivals and takes you downtown to the train station! You get off there and get into a smaller shuttle bus that for free (driver takes tips) takes you to ur hotel For the return its exactly the opposite. small shuttle to train stn, then on to big bus to airport!! I had my hotel call and reserve the small shuttle to pick me up! Worked rather well! I think a cab ride is probably in the $30+ range EACH way! http://www.autobus.q..._dorval_an.html

I stayed at the tour le centrivelle back in 2004 and it was DATED!!! I was there by myself, so I was ok with it. It had a fridge to keep my beer cold so i was happy! would i stay there again?? no!! It was very dated, lol Staff were friendly though. I usually like to stay at nicer hotels as they usually have nicer beds! As I recall the bed there sucked!! Many have said the Delta was nice.

I didnt think the area around the consulate was all that bad! I did a lot of walking around, and felt safe! If ya want to feel uncomfortable, come walk around some of the DC areas, lol A fair # of hotels within a 15-20 min walk from the consulate.

I do not know any french--and did fine. of course i never really talked with anyone, lol I ate out a few times and survived! Best of luck

CanadaCR-1 + TN visa simultaneously
At 1 time most did the k3/cr-1 at the same time and just went with the 1 that finished first!! But I thought the rules changed so it didnt make it worth while. I know back in 2004 we did both and I was in the USA(moved down) on the CR-1 and like 4 months later the k3 was approved, lol The beauty/frustration of immigration, doesnt always make sense!!

The funny thing about Tim Hortons no longer making the donuts in the stores------They changed how they did it for months before announcing it to the public, and no 1 complained!! BUT once they heard they were no longer "fresh" then they stated they sucked, lol

First of all--My wife means everything, lol But yes at Times I miss my former job in the Air Force!! At that tiem one had to be in the Forces to get it, and it was a desired trade, so very hard to get!! So it was an extremely difficult choice to make! Oh well, life goers on,lol RN is ok, but its go, go ,go and for many pts, one can never do enough! It can be an extremely rewarding career, and at times it just plain sucks, lol have a huge dislike for the DC area. Far too much traffic. Sure there are lot of things to do, but one has to plan around the traffic and of course the summer brings all the clueless tourists, lol. I'm fortunate that things should change in mid 2011 as were movin gout of the area for a few yrs, so thats pretty cool. I really have no friends here that I can call up, but I'm ok with that, I'm not an overly sociable person out in public, lol, in the hospital setting ya, public not so much. My wife feels pretty bad about me having to make the big decision to move here and I'm fortunate I can head back to Canada a few times a yr. Guess we are all in the same boat. I plan on getting a new Cdn flag theme tattoo soon. Just need to find a good artist in the DC area.

I dont think one has to make oodles of $$$ to have kid, but one should be able to support them without gov't assistance!!

Sorry about ur situation Missa! But I believe--and yes probably get flames for it,lol, but its my opinion, which means nothing,lol---but if one can not afford kids, one should not have them!! If one can't afford to go buy a car--should that person have that car?? no! So whats the difference in having kids?? besides that society will have to kick in with their taxes (yes not in all situations) and pay for that kids upbringing!! Todays society is too much "I need" rely on credit cards and others goodness!! Gone is the hard work ethic and the desire to save $$$ until you can afford things!! Oh well, just my lowly opinion! I get that at work--oh ur not working as much as before, blah blah, well I save my $$ and do not have kids, lol I drive older vehicles, no car payments! So I'm not stressed out about that stuff! again, just my opinion!! I'm sure that would change if I had 1 or 2 rug rats!! lol

no kids here and no regrets at all! Could change our minds, but its not on our top 10 list of things to do,lol Wife is in her early 30's, me middish/late 30's so still have time! But real no desire, maybe I'm selfish, but I enjoy doing what i want when i want, buy what I want when I want!! If i dont want to work, dont have to work, lol But that is just me. I'm sure if we had kids, my view would change. But more than happy to enjoy my 2 cats and dogs and spoil my nephews when i see them!

CanadaWant Credit?
Like I said in another post above, it really matters on how they---the person on the phone at the CC company puts you on the account---As I recall, we had to talk with several people before they got the drift on what we wanted, lol And ya, each CC company is different, just another frustration to deal with! As well see if you can take over the phone bill or some sort of utility. Some will do it with no deposit.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2010-09-30 17:38:00
CanadaWant Credit?
When it comes to be putting on your USA citizens credit card, there are a few different ways it can be done, and to piggyback onto that persons credit card and get the benefit of the credit rating, it has to be a certain way. To be honest, I'm not sure on the official language one has to use! A few yrs ago, that chick on CNBC Suzzy stated that the credit card companies were trying to close that loophole, but they have not yet!

CanadaWhat's the best bank?
Its truly a hard question to answer! We had Wachovia in the Arlington and falls Church area, and they were not that great! Was a pain in the butt when it came to closing the account too! Like anything else, all comes down to the how the branches are staffed

I'm sure if you do a google search like--best bank account, best bank etc, you will come up with a website that breaks down the fees, etc like this one http://www.findabetterbank.com/

USAA i believe has softened its stance on how to join! Yes, some like to be able to go into a bank, But they are great on the phone. We have our insurance with them as well.

Suntrust has been ok to deal with. Since we have our mortgage with them, we pay no fees for chequing acct, think our safety deposit box is free or heavily discounted and they are fairly friendly! But no clue what their fees are if you don't have a mortgage thru them
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2010-10-01 12:37:00
CanadaWhat's the best bank?
Love USAA---but someone along the line I believe has had to be in the military or govt service of certain types!! We piggybacked off my wifes parents, who piggybacked off her grandparents, lol We pay no fees for any of our accts, free cheques, and I love that i can scan my cheques from HOME and it gets deposited into my acct (dont even have to mail the cheques in!!) Of course their is noactual store, so all is done online! If I have plain old cash to deposit, I can mail it in--in postage paid envelopes they provide, but normally I just deposit it into my Suntrust acct and tx the money to USAA or the rainy day fund in ING. Not a big Suntrsut fan---only have an acct with them, as we have our mortgage thru them!

CanadaMontreal Consulate

Does anyone know how long the Police Clearance Checks are good for, according to the Montreal Consulate? I got one done in May for an employer and I'm wondering if I should get another one done for the interview. Also, it was completed by my local police station and states that "a Canada wide search was completed...," do I need to get one completed by the RCMP?

good for 1 yr!! and the ones from local police forces are fine.

Been here since 2004 and that hasn't happened nor has it ever been a rule!! As I said before lot of the people with a lot of knowledge no longer post here, wonder why!! Montreal does not assign the interviews for cr-1//ir-1--NVCC does that, and i'm pretty certain there was interviews! VJ represents just a small fraction of people that are undergoing this process. There have been others that have had success with contacting their congress person when they are outside the acceptable time lines! Would be a new thing if one could trust an gov't official, lol Who knows what they did---they sure don't want to take the blame--blame means loss of votes!!

To be fair, he was only asking!! And he figured the answer to be no!! Doesn't hurt to ask!! Later on in the process, if things are going at a snails pace, the USA citizen could always try to get their senator involved. But it has to be outside certain amount of time I believe! But as the saying goes--squeaky wheel gets the grease!

1 can always fill out the form there, but back to the line ya go! If ya have it already filled out, you simply hand it over to the clerk! I recommend getting early to the SSN office and waiting for it to open, always a busy place

Wow brock and sdw, that was fast! I wish mine would get here! I'll have been here for 3 weeks as of this Friday! I am now thinking that I am one of those lucky schlubs that just NEVER gets the SSN and has to go in and apply.

Oh well, i guess it is what it is, I wish i'd get it though, I need to get my drivers' stuff taken care of and open up my own bank account.

Congrats to you guys! both of you waited for a long time for stuff so I really should not complain at all.
:D

yep, best to download the SSN form, fill it out, take ur passport and head to the SSN office and ask about the status of it.

Greencard usually arrives very soon after the welcome letter
