CanadaMontreal Interview

Ya, I did. It's not necessary for the process.. but I'll tell you what? All us immigrants..we should bring our spouses to the interviews just so that our loving USC spouse can see exactly what we go through. They'll appreciate us and the process more. My wife's eyes opened wide once she got a taste of the 'system'. So when I used to get upset and bent and frustrated..she can understand it better now.

just my two cents.

I think most USA spouses know exactly what one goes thru as they are along for the ride as well! Mine filled out the paperwork, i did pretty much nothing, lol

Like others, one can make a holiday of it.

CanadaMontreal Interview
Nope--- mine wasn't there! Interview itself is lucky to be 10 minutes!! very basic questions asked--how one met--what are ur employment plans in the USA---what does my spouse do?? very easy! 99% of ones time is spent waiting around!

CanadaTraveling to US After Interview Without Using K1
Some have managed to travel to the USa and NOt "activate" it! What you have working in ur favor--is the NEXUS pass! But once you "activate" it, then one can NOT leave the USA until u Get the Greencard or get AP! Well you can leave, you just may not get back in!lol And yes that has happened! Then one starts back at square 1 with the CR-1.

Canadaive got a question for yall
You can have that attitude at the border and see what happens, they can deny you entry into the USA and it is simple as that! And the more of a fuss you put up at the border they can go further then a simple denial, they can ban you! And then the real fun begins! Yes you will continue on with the k1, you will get to the interview and yes they will know about the Ban then you will have to file a waiver!! And you think the k1 process was long! The waiver will most likely take MUCH longer!! Probably over a year!! People here are just letting you know their experiences! Seriously, no one cares more about ur case than YOU!! We all go on with our lives, were not loosing any sleep over it,lol People are just trying to be helpful! If you just get denied entry, not the end of the world! many have been denied entry, because lack of ties and has not affected their visa application! Just never lie!!!!!!! They can make your life miserable. Sure one can go hire a lawyer to fight it, but thats just $$$$$ out the window, and probably would not do much good! Best of luck

Canadaive got a question for yall
Its funny how this topic comes up every week, if not several times a week sometimes! There really is no magic response , it all comes down to how one handles them-self, and the POE officer! If he or she is having a crappy day, well that may not be good news for you. Plus if you use words such as "stay" vice "visit", that may set off an alarm! Who knows! Just tell the truth and be polite. As I have said before, it all comes down to the POE officer, their views on the laws seem to vary between officers

Canadaive got a question for yall
From Aug 2002 until dec 2004, I think our longest time apart was 5 or 6 weeks! Usually one of us traveled each month to see each other! We never got denied entry and barely an eye was raised, never had to show any proof! But My wife--the USA citizen--on 1 or 2 occasions visiting Canada, did seem to get questioned more than I ever did! All boils down to which POE officer you get!!

You will find a lot of people saying "oh u just have to marry a USA citizen and ur fine" or "u marry a USA citizen, and you automatically become a USA citizen!" all not true.

CanadaZipped up binder OK to bring to MTL consulate?
I'm sure that will be fine! I used a plastic accordion binder. They just don't want huge bags and NO elecroics of any kind, that includes car key chains!!

CanadaWrong Consulate

Montreal is the only one that does the IR1/CR1 visas. Not sure what other consulates process the K1's other than Vancouver and Montreal.

no others in Canada!

All cr-1/ir-1 goto Montreal (im sure you knew that) But I imagine if you did not know about VJ, you may not even know which consulate one was to goto! They would just accept it and wait and wait and wait, lol

Has happened to others! I believe they sent an email to Montreal--case # in subject line---and case was transferred to Vancouver.

CanadaUS Banking with Canadian Banks
Many of us use Customhouse.com to transfer $$ between a USA acct and a Cdn account. I have been since 2005. They are now owned B Western Union! No fees if you file electronically. Not a huge deal if ur exchanging small amounts of $$$, but if ur transferring larger sums it sure does!!

CanadaDCF Interview

There don't seem to be many other DCF's on the forum unfortunately, so it is difficult to gauge how long it is supposed to take. In the letter I received in December it quoted 4-6 months from receipt of the checklist (which at 5 months now is still within their timefram). The automated message system at Montreal now says 5-7 months. I was under the impression that DCF was the quickest way to get a green card, but I'm not sure it is anymore.

If one went the regular cr-1, or ir-1 route it can take over a year!

From 2003 to late 2004--untikl I moved to the USA---We used AT&T as our cell provider! Forget how much it was, but prob in the same ball park, and worked out very well! Our plan included unlimited evenings and weekends.

Canadacan I work via laptop for Canadian clients while in the US with AOS or CR-1 pending?
One should enter the USA as a visitor already with enough $$$,so that isn't a valid reason.

I know a few other cdns while on a K1/k3 have continued to work online for a cdn company. It is prob 1 of those grey areas!!

CanadaPOEing soon...

I am POE'ing on Saturday at Calis ME, so excite. My fiance is flying in tonight and we are driving the U-haul down 10 hour drive how fun!!! can't wait so excited of the fact that i can pick him up tonight and know i don't have to take him back.

I think that was my my POE too, back in Dec 17 2004,lol. I crossed around 1900ish, wasnt busy at all. I was the only person besides staff in the building. Mind you it was storming outside!! Very painless, and they didnt even look in my u-haul. Customs guys barely looked at my inventory list, was much more interested in his solitaire computer card game!!

CanadaPOEing soon...
I had a list of my stuff, nothing fancy. POE dude barely looked at, never did look in my U-haul truck!

Ensure you look over ur U-haul truck. Check fluids and over all condition of the truck before accepting it.

CanadaArrived and Settled
It has been and on and off again thing with EI and k1'ers. At 1 time they were able to get it, then they weren't until one has EAD. Seems to be an ongoing thing.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2010-08-04 17:35:00
CanadaArrived and Settled

Thats wierd once you get your EAD you can work therefore you proly won't need the EI...unless that is we are unfortunate to not be able to find a job that is....

One has to be LEGALLY able to work to get EI!! Another bonus of the cr-1/ir-1
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2010-08-04 15:48:00
CanadaArrived and Settled
congrats!!

there is a WHOLE topic on CDN EI at the top! For a k1'er, you apply right away, BUT until you get the EAD, you can not collect it--as u can't legally work yet in the USA--but u still have to apply right away! Cr-1/ir-1, can claim EI right from the get-go--as they can legally work! Of course one still has to be eligible to claim EI--having enough working hrs back in Canada, etc

Enjoy Boston!! Were actually going to be up there next thurs/fri for a short vacation. Staying at 1 of the downtown hotels and sight seeing.

CanadaIn need of advice
When u goto remove condtions (one can file 90 days before the expriary date on ur greencard) one has to list all the dates they were out of the USA for 24 hrs, that of course includes to Canada!

you do not have to tel them anything!! 1 has has up to 10 yrs to move their belongings. If they ask, just state your bringing it at a later date

yep insurance is a pain! My wife works for the gov't and last yr she brought home the insurance "book" and must have been an inch thick!! She made the decsion, so not much help there. But it isnt cheap!!

CanadaHelp! Can't Decide DCF or USCIS?
Each country is different Samonline. It appears in Canada things are taking longer, so there is no clear cut answer.

One can not go to the USA with the INTENTION of staying--visiting is up to the POE officer, which many of us do or did.

Montreal appears to speed up, slow down speed up,lol. Best thing one can do is look at the timelines of the Canadians that went the regular IR-1 route and the ones that went DCF. There around here someplace and in the DCF forum. Even if they are running the same timeframe, isn't the DCF route a bit less of a hassle?? And chances are it will be faster, but one could run into the problem others have had---proving USA domicile issues.

Dress for success!! One doesn't need to dress up--suit and tie,, but casual is fine, sure jeans and a nice collared shirt is prob fine too! Look like a bag of shyytt, expect to be treated the same way,lol During my Naturalization ceremony, I was surprised how some dressed!! Holey jeans, t shirts that didn't even cover their belly buttons, lol

CanadaPOE Tomorrow!
you will drive up to the POE dude and say hey dude, im here to ACTIVATE (lol, inside joke) my k1! He will say park ur vehichle over there, or what ever! In Maine I parked my Uhaul and went inside with the Mystery brown envelope and my inventory list! Customs guy barely even looked at my list, never did look in my uhaul!! The Immigration people asked me a few questions, took my pic, and fingerprints and stamped my passport and that was it!!

Since ur a k1'er ensure they give u the I-94--Think someone stated it costs $6 or $7!! U need that for AOS i guess. Chances are they wont look at ur list, but best to have 1 ready. Easier to do it at home, then rushed at POE!!. Enjoy
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2010-08-10 08:43:00
CanadaNews coverage re: immigration bothering you too?
Personally could care less about illegals. Doesn't bother me that they are here. I sleep great every night knowing I came here legally, and not worried about the police picking me up and deporting me, of course there are some days i wish they would deport me back to Canada, lol

Canadahas anyone traded in a g-2 license
All depends on the state and probably who you deal with at the DMV counter. When I came to VAS on my cr-1, the DMV gave me a license that expired on the same date as my Green card! When i got the NOA 1 (or what ever it was) for my 10 yr green card, it extended my green card for another yr, until I received the 10 yr greencard--my drivers license was again, only good for 1 more yr! And I almost found out the hard way--VA does not always send out notices that ur DL is expiring!! i was driving around for a month on an expired DL!! Only reason I knew--was when I went to the liquor board store (called LB in Sask, lol) The clerk refused me service, because my DL was expired!! So rushed down to the DL--yes I drove,lol---They almost made me start over from scratch---test and road test and loose my motor cycle endorsement! But they took pitty on me!! Pays to be nice, lol
