CanadaHow should I apply for Green Card- DCF or AOS?
See what the DCF regs are for the country that ur in!! Even if they are lightning fast, there is a period of time one has to use ther visa!! In Canada, one has up to 6 months to use it!! Could be different for other countries. Check out the DCF forum on VJ

CanadaDual-Citizenship
Lot of us are dual USA/CDN citizens here. Never had a problem with any financial institutes here. Only reason why some Canadians may have problem getting a mortgage or loan in the USA is because they have NO CREDIT HISTORY in the USA--One has to build up credit pretty much from square one! And their are a few threads on VJ on how to get obtain credit/credit cards!! Giving up Ones cdn citizenship has NOTHING to do with that--ur still going to have no credit history in the USA.

CanadaPOE in Maine
The gal had no clue on how to do a CR-1 visa----so she actually had to call another crossing and then looked in the magic book of instructions which stated how to do it. All went well. Believe it took well under an hour to do.

CanadaPOE in Maine
Did mine in maine back in 2004--Dec 17 or 18 1004, time flies!! was too easy!! drove up in my U-haul, told them i was there to activate my cr-1. poe dude told me to park my u-haul truck and then go inside. gave my inventory list to the customs dude, he barely looked at it, never looked in my uhaul truck. Immigration people asked a few basic questions, finger printed me, took the mysterious brown envelope and that was about it. very painless. I was there later at night, wasnt busy at all.

CanadaAny other CR1ers been told at the border that they need Advance Parole to enter the States while waiting for their visa?
Just to make this clear, the OP has NOT had her interview yet, not till January. The POE dude may have thought she had AOS'd while in the USA and thus if did not have her green card yet from the AOS process, she would have required AP to re-enter the USA. But yes it is amazing on how many of the Poe officials do not know the rules

CanadaAny other CR1ers been told at the border that they need Advance Parole to enter the States while waiting for their visa?
In reading ur experience, you have NOT yet had the interview, so nothing is certain yet, as yes one could be denied (not likely). One does not have the RIGHT to gain entry into the USA. Most have no problems entering (with proper evidence) Not sure why they stated AP, thats a bit odd. But like u stated, u should have the visa in hand next time, so hopefully problem solved!!

All part of the frustrations with visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process--POE officials seem to intrepret the rules differently, which adds to the frustration/confusion.

I wouldn't worry about what others think--which I'm sure you do not, lol!! I'd do what Inky suggested and put in ur case # in the subject line as well. If it were me, I'd be consistently emailing them AND i would be contacting my congress person, as they can sometimes have better luck getting in touch with the consulate, then u can with email! Best of luck!!

CanadaMoving Beforehand
Since the k1 is a 1 time use, obviously the OP can NOT cross back to Canada until he/she has AP or the greencard. Can she send some stuff ahead with her fiance, probably, but going by the rules, no. I believe when a K1 crosses and uses a moving company, one has to cross, THEN fax them a copy of the proof that they have entered the USA, then the moving company uses the form 3299--unaccompanied goods. 1 has like up to 10 yrs to bring their stuff across as well. Hard to say if the POE people would have any hassles, probably not if it was clothes, other small items, probably a different story if it was electronics.

Canadagot temp green card what next

hello all

Well I am finally living here in USA been here since aug 22
i got my green card for myself and children and SSN
the green cards expire in 2 years
what should i be doing next
what is my nextstep in this immigration process as i dont want the green card to expire and be shipped back to canada
please let me know anything i should be doing
thank you

quite simple---90 DAYS prior to the Expirary date on ur GREENCARD (nothing to do with wedding anniversary date)opens up the window where you filer the I-751. Just do it within that 90 days window! Keep track of time spent outside the USA of 24 hrs or longer as you need to jot that down! And if u apply for citizenship down the road, they want that info too!

CanadaFingerprints Problem Abroad

Hi Flames,

Thanks for the information! If I can really do it that way, well then yeah that would solve the problem. I would probably need one from Ontario, which is where I'm from in Canada, but they probably have something similar.

However, I'm almost positive that the requirement is for an RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check, or the other RCMP document which doesn't require fingerprints. The document you are suggesting seems to be only a local/provincial background check, and not nationwide. The databases they would search would only cover that area. The truth is that would seem to be sufficient, since I have only lived in Ontario. and clearly it was enough for you. It's just- I have a friend who applied here and submitted a provincial-wide check, and they called him back to get a nation-wide one from the RCMP. (He ended up doing it in Canada, as he was going there anyways.) It could be that it doesn't matter that I am not physically in Canada- but rather that I am not applying through the Consulate in Canada. Perhaps since you applied in Canada, the Consulate there accepted the province-wide check, but overseas they need the RCMP one. Does this make sense? Seems tough to swallow that, but they keep telling me here that I need to contact the RCMP, plus that experience with my friend... but I will definitely try to look into it. If it works, and I don't even need to submit fingerprints- that would solve everything.

Any ideas how to check this out, besides calling the Consulate here since they have already answered me on this? Has anybody else submitted this provincial Criminal Background Check instead of an RCMP document for U.S. immigration purposes, and where did you apply?

Thanks Flames and everyone else!

Benjamin

NO--it is canada wide--they search the same system the RCMP does--Canada wide!! I have it right in front of me. On it it has a few check boxes--- Reason required: Visa and immigration box is checked off. And it states that they searched the winnipeg police sysrtem AND the Canada national system---which is what you require. But the hold back may be that since you are out of canada, the USA side of the house requires finger printing. may or may not work! I believe it did work for someone else, but they were in the USA.

CanadaFingerprints Problem Abroad
My head is still fuzzy from working nights---I was in Canada, so may be different---but I got a background check completed by the Winnipeg city police--yet I never stepped inside the building. Did it all on the phone or online, honestly can't remember--but I do know they mailed me the background check. You could probably contact them, THEN give them a Canadian mailing addy---and then have that person mail it to you.

Easiest was would just travel to Canada on her Greencard and expired CDn passport and do it from there. Keeping in mind--the passport people are very picky about the quality of the passport photos!

Pretty sure I used my American credit card for payment. I do believe you can just use ur greencard to gain entry into canada (take ur expired Cdn passport with ya) and then appy for a new Cdn passport in Canada. I think they can rush it too for extra $$$.

CanadaTransferring Funds
CH staff was great, they will talk you thru it step by step as well. But now that a few Cdn banks have entered the USA market, as others have stated their is other options now. If ur transferring large amounts of $$$$, its good to check around to see what exchange rate ur going to get! and keep in mind it takes a day or 2 to set up a CH account
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-01-08 09:56:00
CanadaTransferring Funds
Now a days, if ur just withdrawing small amounts, ur ATM is probably suffice. But if ur transferring large amounts of $$$, you def want to check around. Few yrs I did a decent sized transfer, phoned the banks and CH was better, and it did make a difference. CH is free to set up, its nice to have in case you need it. If you do it electronically (EFT)its Free, takes 3-4 BUSSINESS days to go thru, and they do offer a wire service as well, but it costs $$$. Of course the EFT is not truly free, they make their $$ on the exchange rate difference.

I keep 1 Cdn bank acct open with a near zero balance! As I occasionally get Cdn Cheques. Soem banks will charge you fees up the wazoo, or they won't charge u a fee, BUT give u a sub-par exchange rate! Again not a huge deal on a small amount, but sure sucks on the larger ones! So i just mail my cheques back to my folks, who have my Cdn bank debit card, and they deposit it into my Cdn account. Then I use CH to tx the $$$. I also TX funds from the USA back to Canada when I head back home! Nice to have when i send $$ to my relatives, just write a cdn cheque then too

CanadaFor those in the DC area:
cool!!

Groupon and living social have a deal of the day that gets emailed out to you. Have had great experiences with both! I know one of the deals my wife got with groupon went bad, as the business closed--Groupon refunded our $$$, which is cool, we thought we were out a few hundred bucks, but nope!!

There is more and more of these types of companies popping up, which is good for us consumers, but can be bad for companies. Read an article online that some of these deal are cost the companies $$$$$ as most people do not return again.

Nice thing with groupon and living social--if u refer a friend and they sign up--u get $10 that can be put towards a deal.

CanadaCanadian marrying USC to reside in Canada
KISS!!!!!!!!! only tell them what they ask!!! And yes its legally ok to get married in the USA and all of that, but in the eyes of an POE officer, they may think that you may stay in the USA!! There is a chance you could be denied entry, that goes for anyone that is visiting the USA, more so of a chance if ur visiting an USA boyfriend!! I got married in the USA, never told the POE dude, but he never asked. Ensure u have concrete ties to canada proving u are returning. Its just another part of the immigration process---the wondering if ur going to be hassled/denied entry when one goes to visit! I traveled monthly to DC and never had 1 problem, but others have been hassled/denied. No 1 on here can say what will happen----it pretty much comes down to the POE officer you get. If it were me--I would not be carrying any wedding dress or wedding stuff in my lugguge (well I'm a guy, lol)mail it down prior and only answer the questions they ask, and follow my advice in the signature, but thats just me!! You start yapping 1000 mph, get nervous, POE officer is going to think something is up! KISS keep it simple stupid, lol

CanadaWedding Details
Learned a valuable lesson with insuring ur rings! Wife lost (or was stolen) her wedding and engagement rings at gym back in Aug. Rings were very valuable and we had their own insurance policy on them! last time we had them appraised was back in 2003. Should have had them appraised every few yrs! 1 thing our Insurance co stated that most stores, the appraisal is much higher than the true value of the rings--and insurance only pays for what it would cost to replace them! So even though you may have an appraisal for say $5000, if the insurance co can replace it for $3000, ur only going to get $3000. We had to go get an estimate on how much it would cost to re-make the ring! So ensure you have some good quality pics of the ring!! As the jeweller will need something to work off of! Even after we provided all of that, we stil had to argue a bit with the insurance company, lol! They are not in the business to loose $$$. So lesson learned---- have good quality pics of ur rings and if they are $$$$ get them appraised every few yrs!! And find a jewellery store u can trust! We are dealing with 1 in RI!! Don't think the wife is even going to wear the new ones, straight into the safety deposit box,lol

Canadafilling out cards for e.i., first time
Even if one does not have the EAD--one still has to file right away! Maybe you will get lucky and get EI anyways! Just hope you don't have to pay it back!! Just because one gets the EI cards does NOT mean ur were approved or going to get $$$.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-01-16 19:03:00
Canadafilling out cards for e.i., first time
Always a lot of confusion of a k1 can work or not work!! I came on a cr-1 so do not keep up with the k1, but I thought one also required the EAD stamp at POE which 99.999% of the time they no longer hand out. To add more confusion to the situation the CDN EI people said no to the k1'ers without the EAD, but some wihtout the EAD did get EI--all depended who handled ur case.

As well--if one is on holidays or not actively looking for work, one is suppose to be honest and thus not collect for that time period--just saying. Ensure you keep a record of the places you have applied to--they can contact you and ask for that information. Best of luck

Have it done now. Each RCMP station varies in time that it takes to get it. Like the above poster stated it took her 15 minutes--others take a day or 2 or longer. Best to phone them and ask how long it takes. One can also use local police forces, just have to ensure your search is done canada wide. As well if you have changed ur name, have it searched in that name as well.

There is a consulate in Ottawa, BUT they do not do any of the k1, K3 or cr-1/IR-1 interviews!!! Only two consulates in Canada handle them--- Vancouver (k1, and k3) and Montreal (k1, k3 and Cr-1//IR-1)

If on ur application you put down Ottawa, don't worry, it will get directed to the right Consulate (mtl or van) based on where u live in Canada. Manitoba and west goto Van. East of MB you goto Mtl.
