CanadaExchange Rates
It all depends! Few yrs back,my parents gave me a chunk of cash! They checked in with the bank of Montreal and I checked Custom house to see what the better route was going to be. CH had a better rate. But it probably varies!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2010-03-17 16:01:00
CanadaExchange Rates
right now on CH it is 1 CAD = 0.9713 USD and of course that changes by the minute!!

I think some dont realize, that yes ur bank may not charge you any fees, but their exchange rate wont be that great! Sure if one is only transferring small amounts of $$$, it is no big deal, but for larger amounts, it makes sense to investigate it! Setting up a CH account is free, so doesn't hurt to have one. It does take a bit of time to set up, so not something one wants to leave for the last minute to do! a CH rep actually calls you to verify info. As well u have to mail/fax or scan//email a bit of info to them!

Canadapregnant Canadian wife - any loopholes?

Sorry, I<m not very computer-savvy.... still trying to figure this forum out!!

I'm just kidding, still no church goer! Was dragged to church up to grade 7--then made the developmental Hockey team--then away every weekend for hockey tournaments, whewwww, I was saved, lol Welcome to VJ!!!

Canadapregnant Canadian wife - any loopholes?

If you are a church-goer, there are group insurance plans such as Samaritan Ministries. They may not provide full coverage for pregnancy (pre-existing), but they will provide some. I am still waiting for my visa, but I have already joined on my husbands plan. They were not concerned about SSNs or visas.

I would hate to be in your position- We've been careful not to get pregnant anyway, simply because we wouldn't want to be apart. If you need a place to stay in Montreal, I know some nuns who have somewhat of a boarding-house for foreign students... you could maybe try them...

I'm no church goes, lol I think you quoted the wrong person!!

CanadaBirth Certificate

Ok thanks everyone, I'll apply for one so that I have it for the interview :)

I finished with the process back in 2004, so my brain is cloudy. Is one required to MAIL in the long form cert???? If it is, then you should mail in a LONG form birth cert. But up to you, RFE's can add time on to ur journey.

If you are from Quebec, it's the 1 pager not the laminated pocket-size version. It will have to be translated as Quebec does not provide English birth certificates.

Not sure, I'm sure someone else will pipe up, but if it asks to submit a LOng form, then submit a long form birth cert!! Otherwise one will get a RFE, adding further delay!

CanadaBuying a House
If the USA Spouse has excellent credit rating, your (CDn) may not be required! When we bought back in 2005, didnt even use my Credit rating! I was not on the mortgage, BUT was on the deed. When we refinanced a few yrs later to get a better interest rate, I was on that application as I had excellent credit too! But since you have been here for a few yrs, ur credit could be great too.

What we were told, was for the 1 bank to check our credit rating---which we did--and they gave us our credit scores from the Main 3 credit companies! So when we contacted other lending institutions---We said not to check our credit rating as we already have the current scores! They were fine with that--With the understanding that if we did go with them, they would of course have to check! Ensure they give you a Good faith Estimate! Easier to compare Apples to Apples!! Each Lender has a different name for everything! So that GFE, makes it easier to comnpare! If it sounds too good to be true, well it just may be! I played hockey with a Fellow that owned his own lending Co. He told me he could do better then what I was going to get from another lender. Sure it sounded better--but then realized I had to pay points (which costs $$$) So in the long run it was a lot worse, lol

Interview Realtors until you find one that you are comfortable with! It is YOUR money, so take your time and find one that LISTENS to what you want! Yes that sounds funny as you would think they would listen to you, but believe me, some do not! My feeling anytime that $$$$$$ is involved, some are going to be pulled to the bigger payday! I have no problem saying thank you for your time, but your wasting my time! When you say ur limit is this and they are going WAY over, well it is time to move on and find a new agent! It is your $$$! A Great agent is a blessing, and makes the process much better!

We gave our agent a list of MUST have, Nice to have, and Have nots (deal breakers) Great communication is the key!

Search out some good home forums!! Google is ur friend!

When u find the right house--ENSURE you check out the neighborhood!! And I mean knock on doors! Seriously! You will be surprised what people will tell you! Good and bad!! Is it safe? Quiet??? Recommend to friends/family??

Check out the crime statistics for area. Can be found online and local police

Find a Good Home inspector! They say NOT to use 1 recommended from ur Realtor! Again, many forums people post their experiences! Google is ur friend, so is better business bureau!!

Ensure when the contract is written, it has escape clauses--ie on home inspection

Again, your spending a lot of $$$$$$, so do your research. Know what makes you happy and what does not!!

http://www.redfin.com/home is a good site and has a forum and they have realtors

http://ths.gardenweb...ums/realestate/ so-so home forum

Houses cost $$$ and so does the upkeep. Even if the banks will loan you $1 million, can u truly afford $1 million house??? 1 wants a life as well (entertainment, cars, kids, etc etc)

Best of luck. Home buying can be a fun time.

CanadaInterview Information and Help
yes, no electronics. Back in 2004 when I was in line, they turned away people with big back packs/purses. And ELEVATOR opens from the rear, lol Back then for cr-1/ir-1 (maybe it has changed now) one did not get a # until you reached the actual floor. So people (non-VJ'ers)would get into the elevator and huddle by the front--Us VJ'ers would goto the rear where it opened, lol

CanadaInterview Information and Help
99% of time Mtl does not even ask for evidence! But YES its best to be prepared. Quality over quantity! I used a plastic Accordion style binder that had like 12 compartments! Have ur passport and Interview letter in the front! Brought a few pics of us together and with our families, few letters, airfare receipts, chat logs from yahoo (few pages only) nothing that crazy! And No she did not attend the interview with me. The interview itself is very quick, lucky to be 10 minutes and most of that time they are going through your paperwork to make sure it is in order!! Best of luck

CanadaPLAYOFFS!!!!!

How am I a fair weather fan? My team's out. I can't cheer for them. I'll cheer for my boyfriend's team but if they're out, I'll have to cheer for someone else.

Yep no hockey for u!! My flames are out, no big sunrise there!! Cheer for the Caps, but more importantly I rather to see an entertaining game!! I see no true excitement if ur team wins 10-0! Sure you get bragging rights, but a hard fought, game with lots of action is a lot more exciting!

CanadaDoes Crossing US Customs at Pearson Count as "in America"?

Okay, thanks. Yes, there will be evidence I'm a guest, and I'm going to get the conference to write a letter stating that they are picking me up/taking me back to the airport, taking care of my accommodations, etc.,.

The problem with my strong ties is that I'm a freelancer who lives with her parents :( So I don't have rent, I don't own a car, I don't have an employer. I work from home and my "office" is an Alienware, a Cintiq, and a drafting table in my bedroom :(

I am a pseudo-celebrity in my town, so I was thinking of having my MP and the Mayor sign letters each stating that I'm a valued citizen and they can vouch that I'm returning--if that would be helpful...I'm not sure. I was also going to schedule my yearly checkup for sometime after the conference.

If they will write a letter for you why not get them to do it!! Just keep in mind you can have 100% concrete evidence that you will be returning to Canada, and that the POE officer can still deny you entry into the USA! So if they do deny you entry again, remain calm, be polite--your not going to win the argument!! If you become a huge jerk (not saying you would, lol) they then can make your life truly miserable!! Politeness gets one far!! People have to remember these POE officers see 100's, 1000's of people a day and they have to make a judgement call! And I would think the longer their shift goes, the more stressed/frustrated they can get! Cheers
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-04-15 18:44:00
CanadaDoes Crossing US Customs at Pearson Count as "in America"?
As usual it comes down to the POE officer--simple as that! You stated that you really want to goto that Conference in July! So if I were you--that would be my next visit to the USA. Why? Because you should be able to dig up evidence that you are going down for the conference. Maybe your even listed on a brochure or some type of paperwork as a speaker--bring that with you!! As well have at the ready return airfare, apartment lease, anything with ties to Canada and of course the Conference!! My other suggestions is in my signature. Best of luck

CanadaFlying from Toronto to Montreal?

Thanks for the info on the L'aerobus....on their site it also has the listings for the free shuttle...I will call them tomorrow to book my seat.

The bus sits just outside Arrivals---well it did back in 2004,lol Cheaper to buy a return ticket at same time!! The ticket agent that sells the ticket is right in the same area (was back in 2004,lol) You get on bus--it takes u to train stn, you get off and get on a smaller shuttle to hotel!! That shuttle is free, but of course they take tips!! Exact opposite for ur return trip! I had my hotel cal land make my return reservations! Very easy and cheaper than a taxi

I do belive at the downtown MTL train stn--there is a Shuttle that will take u to downtown hotels for free. Its the same shuttle if you were to take the L'aerobus from the Airport to the train stn!

CanadaBiometrics After Arrival to US ?
With the CR-1, one should not have to do Biometrics again until you file for the 10 yr greencard. So not sure why you got that notice. I know yrs ago one could apply for the k3/cr-1 pretty much at the same time, but I doubt you did that. I was already in the USA on my CR-1 when i got notice my k3 was approved, lol Is there a # on the notice one could call?

CanadaWhere are K1 interviews held?
Always good to listen to personal experiences, but at the same time, should know what the gov't "official stance" is, you just never know who is looking at ur paperwork. I personally don't know about the BC, as I'm whitebread prairie lad, lol.

I had doubles of everything, was no way I was flying to Montreal and them needing something, then having everything delayed, but thats me! And no I did not have a ton of evidence-quality over quantity! Evey-thing fit nicely in a legal size plastic accordion binder--which is great for the interview AND after the interview, for the next stages,as you can continue to keep stuff in it, makes for a very easy find!

Wil be in Montreal!!

Only Vancouver and Montreal do k1 visas! Yes their are other consulates in canada, BUT only Mtl and Van do them! Since your in Toronto, you goto Montreal!

Manitoba(k1) and west got VAN. East of that goto Mtl

And --does NOT pertain to you--but ALL CR-1 (already married) goto Mtl!
