Canada6 months per visit to u.s. or 6 months per year debate
Another problem one could possibly face spending to much time out of Canada is ur Cdn medical coverage!

CanadaChanging my info with Canada Revenue
Ya, some say fil it out, some say don't!! I didn't fil it out. On the tax form, on the front page it asks you the date you became or CEASED to be a Cdn resident! I crossed into the USA on Dec 18 2004 and that was the date I used. For fun I checked off the box for the GST credit, even though I made too much $$$, I got a letter in the mail saying I was not entitled to it as I was deemed a non-resident as of Dec 18 2004! Best of luck.

CanadaK1 vs K3
Everyone's situation is different, so have a good look at that chart that compares the k1 and CR-1! The CR-1 is a superior visa, but it takes a lot longer! Just look over that comparison chart.

CanadaMontreal - No appointments?
Since Summer is coming up---and staff will be on holidays, MAYBE they have limited the bookings???

CanadaK1 and vaccination requirements
I think ( I wasnt a k1.......) many Canadians get them completed prior to the interview is that if you goto ur family doctor in Canada, the shots are free( or cheaper than in the USA)! If ya wait till you move to the USA, it costs ya!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2008-01-25 16:39:00
Canadain mtl for interview on wed and forgot my criminal record check!!!

Go to your appointment. They won't be able to say whether they can issue your visa or not because of the missing information, but if you tell them you will have the document in a matter of hours (or less than 3 days), they will give you a pass so you can come back and deliver it personally at the consulate.

If you have to mail it to them later, your package will go through their mail room and it's at least 4 weeks delay before they can do anything with it.

Good luck!

She got her visa. Done deal!

Canadain mtl for interview on wed and forgot my criminal record check!!!

I actually went without it and it wasn't a big deal. (i was surprised).I was approved!! yay! I'm just waiting for my passport. What's my next step to get a work permit?

Glad it worked out. Which visa did you get? k1 or CR-1? I havent had enough coffee yet this morn and I dont see that info listed, lol If its the Cr-1/IR-1 it already has work authorization and one is good to go!! Some wait for their SSN, but thats not necessary, the employer will just hold ur pay until your SSN arrives

K1 is a different story, everyone has different opinions on that, since I didn't go the k1 route, I wont post on that. But more or less some say apply for EAD right away, some say dont. cheers

Canadain mtl for interview on wed and forgot my criminal record check!!!

thanks that gives me some hope. it does not help that tomorrow is a holiday!

My wife was able to overnight me a document from DC to MTL no problem. And if you have to go back in the afternoon to drop it off, no biggy!!

CanadaWe are confused.
You can get married in the USA, thats what we did, got married at the courthouse, started the CR-1 paperwork and then had a family wedding later on--99% of them thought it was real--didnt know that we were already married, lol

1 thing you do NOT want to do is LIE!! That will really ruin ur day,ur year if they catch u in a lie!! If ut saying ur just going down to the USA to visit ur boyfriend and u get sent to secondary and they go thru ur luggage and find ur wedding dress, etc etc, not a good thing. Just saying. My advice on visiting the USA is below in my signature block! Saying all that above, most have no problems at all!!

CanadaMy Montreal Interview experience...
Its not the size of the birth cert that matters. Whats important is that it has the birth parents on it. Has happened in the past that others have lucked out without having the proper one. Some luck out, some don't!!!

CanadaMy Montreal Interview experience...
Congrats! Really should be no surprises to anyone. There are tons of reviews on MTL on the review section, just very few take the time to read them, lol Most of the time at the consulate is spent waiting and waiting. Hopefully you get ur visa back in a timely manner

I just did a search for POE BY TRAIN and see someone did it on the west Coast! They phoned ahead and they said they did do them there. But of course that was on the West coast. But like what others have stated, best to call. Good luck

Canadawhat to file after you get your visa?
Not trying to be rude, please ask all the questions your heart desires. But one really should sit down and read over the guides a few times to ensure your familiar with the process. No 1 cares more about ur case than you!! If one of the VJ members give u wrong info, it does not affect them, it affects you. For the most part people give the correct info, but if you have not spent the time reading the guides, you wouldn't know if the info is correct. I just state that as the Cdn forum is a small group and many times the same question gets asked over and over and over, lol and that's fine, but less people take time to actually look it over as they have seen that question a zillion times, lol Good luck on the AOS portion of the journey!

Canadawhat to file after you get your visa?

This is great!

Do you know if I can file for employment authorization before I get married and before I enter the states?

Also when filing for the adjustment of status, does that have to be filed right after marriage? Or can we wait a couple months for that?

Thanks again for that link!

You need to take some time and read the guides o the AOS page. You will find the pros/cons of applying for an EAD asap after you enter the USA. II didnt go the k1 route, but I think if one applies for the EAD right away, then gets married, that EAD is void?? I'm sure someone will set you in the right direction over that, But do read over the guides and dont forget up top there is a section on examples of filled out forms.

CanadaPre-marriage jitters
We did the long distance thing for quite awhile. I think he longest we spent away i the nearly 3 yrs was 6 weeks, otherwise 1 of us were flying to see the other, yep the airlines loved us,lol Thank god flights were a bit cheaper back then.

It's normal to be concerned, especially for the one leaving their country, as most likely your having to give up your job, and friends!! I hated to leave the Air Force, had a great job, but its just that a job, but hard to find a better desk than a CP 140 Aurora (P3C) lol. But it has been more than worth it. I'm glad we took our time and didn't rush into it. Always a little concerned when I see youngens on here just meeting and rushing to file a relationship visa!! I guess its not so much an age thing, that goes for anyone that rushes into a relationship. But yes it normal to feel concerned/worried!!

I have no problem with people correcting others. But people can be polite! And no I'm not a touchy feeling person. I just think others can treat people with respect. But I'm funny that way! We have another thread in the CDn forum wondering many no longer stay and post in the Cdn Forum! Not saying Inky is the problem, Just stating that not a lot of respect adds to people leaving!!

CanadaCrossing Boder after NOA1
Again it comes down to the POE officer--what he does!! I traveled monthly to the USA and never had a problem. Everyone has different experiences.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-07-23 19:43:00
CanadaCrossing Boder after NOA1
POE Officers(USA and Canada) are doing their JOBS!! Don't get upset at them----Get upset at the people that try to break the rules, thus enforcing officers to act certain ways! Yes some can get carried away, but maybe you were sending off certain signals that tweaked their interests unknown to you. And kids can be very honest, so hey, why not ask them, lol
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-07-23 18:40:00
CanadaCrossing Boder after NOA1
The major factor---The POE officer. Simple as that!! Some are more strict, grumpy, friendly!! Just because one had an easy/difficult entry last time, doesnt mean your going to have the same thing the next time.

CanadaBetter/Faster to go for K1 or CR1?

I'm not going to initially quit, rather take a leave of absence. Can you still collect EI?

PS- Posted this question in the EI thread and hasn't yet been answered.

Its the weekend, VJ isn't that busy on the weekend. Not too many have done that. I guess it would depend on why ur taking a leave of absence. And you can always contact the EI people via phone (sometimes they answer it) and get an answer from them

CanadaBetter/Faster to go for K1 or CR1?

I have always wondered why people ay that.. why is it any harder to be apart once married then before?

we went the Cr1 route and I am glad we did..our journey took a little longer though because our lawyer caused us a couple of RFEs

I hear ya Marilyn, but everyone is different, each their own! I better stop now, otherwise I wil have to go post in the vent forum, lol

CanadaBetter/Faster to go for K1 or CR1?
There is a WHOLE thread at the top about Cdn EI!! You don't have to read it all, but go back a few pages and its all laid out there. The simple answer is YES and for a CR-1, since you can work right away (a k-1 can't) you can get EI right away (minus that 2 week window, acts like ur deductible, forget its actual name!!)
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-08-26 15:29:00
CanadaBetter/Faster to go for K1 or CR1?
PLUS if she has enough qulaifying hours at work in Canada, on a CR-1, she can get Cdn EI right away, lol But if she is going to school, I think that cuts into the amount 1 can get
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-08-26 15:02:00
CanadaBetter/Faster to go for K1 or CR1?
They have no need to know that ur going to get married!! Is it illegal to get married on a visit? NO. But some POE officers may get their feathers up. As I said never Lie. They ask you for your intentions? Say Visiting DC and your flying back on whatevr day! They ask business or pleasure, you say Pleasure! keep it simple!! Now if ur luggage is full of wedding #######, for sure u have to play it differently! lol
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-08-26 14:45:00
CanadaBetter/Faster to go for K1 or CR1?

thanks all to the responses

I was pretty sure that the student visa option would not be the best way to go, I was just throwing out the possibilities. Anything fradulent is not something we want to consider.

It looks like the best way to go would be to get married first and then go through the CR-1 process. It would be beneficial to get married in the US, first because it takes less time to get the actual marriage certificate that you need for the application. In the states it only takes 2 weeks or so, while in Ontario I believe that it takes ~10 weeks. Secondly, she obviously wants to visit the DC area to make sure it is a nice place for her to be and maybe check out some schools in person.

Now, she has extensive visiting history in the US. She was here from January 2011 to June 2011 already. We were planning on driving from Ontario to DC, then she would fly back DC-Toronto. We have crossed the border enough as a couple to know they are very thorough in checking intentions. I plan on bringing the following as evidence:

letter from my uncle, who I will be initially living with
letter from employer stating I am starting a job
my bank statement showing we have some money
her one way ticket from DC-Toronto (she will only be in the States for 2 weeks)

I figured it is best to be honest with the border official and tell them that we are planning to go check out the DC area, get married, and then have her fly back to Canada to start the Visa proceedings. From my research here, there is nothing wrong with going to the US to get married and NOT staying, so it would obviously be best to disclose everything to the border agent. It is a bit of a risk to buy the return ticket without a guarantee she will be able to drive across the border, but I figure that would be extra proof to the border agent that she is not planning to stay and we are trying to go about this the right way. Any thoughts?

WRONG!!! lol Only tell POE gaurds what they ask you!! Dont blab away!! Never lie! See my advice in my signature!!

Thats what we did, on a trip (to DC where my wife lived)got married by A JP and then soon filed the CR-1 paperwork. Visited pretty much monthly, never had a problem! But yes some people get hassled more or denied. All boils down to the POE officer!! But dont blab away!! keep your answers short/sweet, be polite, look them in their eye!! Just never lie!! Best of luck

CanadaTim Hortons
Some days (well probably many, lol) I could go for a bigger XL, but if I don't have it, I really do not miss it. Or I just make an excuse and drive and get another!!!

CanadaTim Hortons
Everything has to be supersized!! Not to get off topic, but thats what I'm enjoying here in Nicaragua-----Smaller portions!! You don't feel soo stuffed!! Even room for dessert. A large sized coffee here is about the size of a medium Dunkin donuts coffee. Now I could handle a bigger sized cup than that, lol
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-08-29 12:01:00
CanadaTim Hortons
They say bigger is better!! lol I now all the Hortons in Ri and Mass are closed, don't think the smaller sizes caused them to close, Dunkins just has a strangle hold on the market there!! Plus the Tims didnt taste anywhere near the same as it did in Canada!! I thought the current XL was fine, any bigger and I think I would just be throwing it out at times!!

CanadaTim Hortons
http://cnews.canoe.c...8/18610621.html

I see they are going to trial new cup sizes! make them bigger I guess. I know when they first came into RI, they were the same sized as in Canada, but wasn't long before they were bigger sized. Dunkins XL is 1 big cup of coffee, so I guess they need to compete with that! In that article it stated Starbucks is trialing a larger sized as well 31 ounces!! crazy!!

CanadaWe decided to buy a house
As usual I have nothing wise to offer, but sorry! When it comes to buying a house, I think things happen for a reason! (I'm not a religious person, so its not an act of god either, lol) This just wasn't the right house for you and a better 1 will show up! Sort of happened to me in Victoria, was a few houses I really wanted, but it just dint work out, back then I wasn't prepared to get into a bidding war for a house. But in the end I found a great house and was much happier in it, then I would have been in the others!! Of course I didnt see it that way at first, was pretty ticked off, disappointed, but in the end it worked out! Not going to tell ya not to worry, or get upset, what good does that do? lol You have every right to be upset, ticked off, disappointed, but in the end, you wil find the right house!! Take a breather, and get back into the saddle!! At least now, you can cross some of the idiots off you list, and know better not to work with them!! Only like 1 trillion other idiots out there, but at least a few less now,lol Keep smiling, and good luck

I second that - you can piggy back if you know someone who is with USAA!

Not sure, might have to be an immediate relative. back in 2005 when we started with USAA, it had to be, but things could have changed. I recall USAA opening up some parts of their business to everyone. Just not sure what. Best to call them and find out.!! Lot of our family (thanks to us,lol) switched over to USAA and love them! Only claim we had to make was for my wifes stolen/lost wedding engagement ring! Of course they didnt want to pay it out right away, lol (they are still there to make $$$$) but they were always very professional and in the end, we actually got more!!! (just 1 can never get the sentimental value back!)
