CanadaAm I able to visit my fiance?
Has been many that have been denied to only try again and have success as they now have more Evidence, but as you know it comes down to the POE officer. 1 Just has to have a plan in case you get turned back. Just never Lie, not even a little one.

Canadamoney and banking, before and after moving
One really has to do their homework on Banks!! As some charge some pretty hefty fees!! Like others stated, some keep separate accounts, some combine them and some do both, lol. You will find a few posts here on Cdn Cheques not easily being accepted in the USA, so that can be a huge pain! Some Cdn banks such as President Choice, want u to close ur acct with them if ur no longer residing in Canada! I just gave them by parents addy and they charge no monthly fee, I keep less than $1 in it!! I dont use it as much as I once did, but used to transfer $$$ back and forth between Canada and the USA with Customhouse! Well worth missing the hassles at the USA bank when cashing a Cdn Cheque!!

As wel you may want to look into getting An american Express credit card in Canada! As I have read on here that they can flip it into a USA American express card!! As when 1 arrives into the USA, you pretty much have zero credit rating (many threads on that as well) Some places can check ur Cdn credit rating, but they don't!! As well Capital One has a credit card for new residents of the USA. They start off with a lower available balance, but it helps you gain some credit!!

If ur spouse is in the military, highly recommend USAA. Awesome bank! My wife isnt in the military, but we piggybacked off her parents, who piggybacked off I believe my father n laws--- father!!

Ur Cdn debit card will work in the USA, but u may get hit with fees when using it and a lower than expected exchange rate! Maybe not a huge thing for $2500, but hey, every cent counts!! if you have RRSP's one has to think what ur going to do with them!! Lots to ponder. Best of luck

Thats the norm for Montreal. It has been this way for YEARS! Probably more so 2006 onwards! Now one has the extra frustration of picking an open slot, if ya can find one!

I recall a few yrs back on here I posted that someone was posting fairly racy pics of the wife on here. I mentioned NO names, nothing, but that person came onto the Canada forum and felt I was in the wrong, lol Not sure why he would think that, if I had made NO mention of his name.

CanadaWhat a weekend!
Highly recommend http://armarkat.com/ for cat trees! They are very solid. We have had 1 since 2005 and its going strong!! They are very well prices as well.. And if you goto retailmenot.com and type in armarkat.com, you can find a coupon for free shipping and maybe 10% as well!!

Back in Victoria, my ex was allergic to the cats! Actually bathed the cats with allergy shampoo!! They didnt like the bath, but it did help with the allergies! In the end it was easier for her to become an EX,lol

And my wife is allergic to cats as well! So we went the $$$ route and have 2 Siberians which are suppose to be an hypo-allergic cat! 1 cat was fine, but two typed the scale just a bit. Wife is no where near allergic to these 2 as say 1 "normal" cat. But like kathyrn stated their is wipes and stuff that comes out as foam u can rub in!! best of luck

We moved from DC area to Nicaragua a few months back with our 2 cats and 1 dog, and all went well thankfully. I know with cats, stress can bring on bladder infections, at least thats what our vet said! Quite often animals act very strange when they are in pain. Hopefully she calms down and gets back to normal

I know with the CR-1, they seem to go back to the bottom of the pile! And seeing how is taking you k1'ers to book an interview, 1 would be advised to do as much as you possibly can, so u don't have to reschedule! Maybe in the email that you send to cancel, one could ask for another date!! 1 can always ask, the answer is already a no, if u don't ask!!

CanadaPOE Tomorrow - Checklist?

Yes, there is a fee of $6. I crossed at the Peace Bridge a little over 2 weeks ago :)

I had a 3 hour wait, but I went on a Sunday lol!

Oh...stay away from the vertical blinds! My fiance got in trouble for touching them when he was looking out the windows lol!

The fee of $6 is for k1'ers, NOT for Cr-1/IR-1'ers A cr-1/ir-1 is not going to be getting a I-94 form! 1 just walks away with an ink stamp

CanadaPOE Tomorrow - Checklist?

My fiancee is making her POE at the Peace Bridge this weekend. We are importing her Silverado truck and a camping trailer also. The CBP says that we need to fill out the EPA form 3520-1 and the DOT form HS-7 to show that it meets the US standards. They also said we need to fill out the DOT form for the camping trailer.

I didn't recall seeing anyone mentioning these forms in there checklists. Does the CBP typically fill these out for you? We do have our conformance letter for the truck and the camping trailer has a label that says it meets U.S. and Canadian safety standards.

Thanks for any helpful tips you may have for us!

I don't know for sure, but their was 1 couple who crossed in Albert that had the stickers and that was not enough for the POE officer!! But thats only 1 case!! If down the rd u do need the proper paperwork to get ur car registered (assuming POE officers dont do it correctly) One can goto the closest international airport and get it done I believe!! But dont quote me on any of that, lol Im sure it wil go fine! You could contact GMC and try and get the compliance letter. I know Nissan faxed it to me for free in a few minutes! But some manufacturers charge a fee and snail mail it!!

The numbers of police certificate you need equals to the numbers the countries you live.

Not really. I believe one has to live there for at least 6 months before it is required. 1 Will cover all of Canada! Ensure you get it donw with all the names one has used!!

Canadaomg i can't believe it!!

I sold a home for more than my asking price because the parties involved ended up in a bidding war. I went with the one that had the least conditions and that I liked better. It was actually the lower offer, but only by a little, something like 500$ With the seller potentially being a company, it makes it harder to be the party that is liked more, but you can still beat them by putting no conditions on your offer, a quick closing date, and offering more than what the list price is.

It's entirely possible that the "bidders" are hoping to purchase the house really cheap for a fast flip, but if you purchase it closer to market value, it makes the house less profitable for the other bidders and you'll likely get it. Decide how badly you want this house. If it was priced 10k more, would you still be wanting it? What about 15 or 20k?

Don't break the bank to get it though, after all, at this point, it IS just a house, and you can always wait for another one to become your home. But if it truly IS a dream home, you need to figure out what the MOST you can comfortably afford is, and consider that price as your offer. You can gamble, and still bid low, (and maybe even win) but make sure that if you do that, you will be okay walking away for not raising your price a little.

Good luck, and I really hope that the story of the multiple bids is a little overblown... fingers crossed for you!

Good advice from above! You have to decide a price that makes you happy! If you bought it for XX amount ur happy, BUT if you spent XXXXXX Not so happy! I'm sure the others know the situation and may have bid very low!!

Years ago, early 80's, it came down to my parents offer on a house and 1 other. Turns out they offered the same amount, but my parents included a short not on how they loved the house, would be a great place to bring up their family of 3!! I can still feel the excitement when the Realtor called and said we had gotten the house. I was in grade 4, but still a very fond memory!! But I believe if it does not work out, its not the right house and a better 1 will come along! Best of luck

You can get into bidding wars in Canada as well. All one can do is put what you think is a fair offer and leave it at that. Hope it works out for the best!!

Canadaomg i can't believe it!!
I have heard Lowes can have some good deals. Don't forget about Sears. I have had good luck with the Kenmore brand as they are made by the big name companies, then just re-badged with the Kenmore logo!! I had a website (prob easy to find) that you could put in the Kenmore model # and it would tell you who made it. And if you don't have a Sears card, I think they give you a discount if you open one up!!

But no it does NOT surprise me. The financial Industry is such a mess, anything can happen!!

Best of luck

CanadaCan I come back to Canada after POE?

Hey guys,i just got my interview date and am planning my things such as, when to quit my job, when to move to us. I have some questions here: Can I come back to Canada after POE? How long have I to stay in US before i can go somewhere outside of US? Can I travel within US(We are scheduling our honeynoon)?

Thanks a lot

One you do your POE as a K1, you can NOT leave the usa until u get ur greencard or you do AP!! Well you can leave, they are not going to force you to stay, BUT your not getting back in! Then you get the pleasure of doing the whole process over again! And yes it has happened in the past!
You can travel all you want inside the USA, by air, car or donkey if you so choose! Best of luck

CanadaEvidence of domicile in the United States
No clue! Their is a whole thread at the top of this forum that talks about this situation. I just have read in the past where the USA citizen is residing in canada--they get to the interview in Mtl and not been issued the visa as Mtl wants the USA citizen to have started residence in the USA! So then the USA person goes back to the USA---the Cdn partner stays in Canada! When the USA person has proff that he has set up residence in the USA he mails it back in to Mtl! AND then Mtl reviews the evidence and this can take awhile! So what some have done, is before the interview, the USA person moves back to the USA and then when the Cdn goes to the interview, they bring along the proof!! No clue if thats still the situation. probably a lot more info on the above thread and probably even more in the now Defunt DCF forum. best of luck

CanadaEvidence of domicile in the United States

thanks for quick response.
So proving tax return means strong connection with US?

I?thought what they meant we must have a job and living place in USA,but we live in Canada, right?

I have not followed this closely, but Mtl wants the American to actuallt be living in the USA or strong evidence that they soon will be! TAx return probably means very little as An american citizen you have to be filing them anyways! In the past, the American citizen has had to return to the USA and have proof that they are residing in the USA--such as a Lease, mortgage, utility bills, letter from employer! No clue if Mtl is still very picky on this issue!!

Canadathings you can't bring into the consulate

For anyone who's done their interview in Montreal already: I know we can't have cell phones, ipods, or apparently "large purses" at our interview, but is there a place to leave those things before you take the elevator? Or am I arriving at the consulate itself with only a plastic/tote bag containing my papers?

Leave at ur hotel room. With hotel front desk staff. There was a place close to the consulate that had lockers for rent that many used. Can't recall the name of it, or exactly where it was located. maybe some will chip in, or may be found by doing a search. best of luck

Yes if u do a search---Montreal lockers....You will find the info.

CanadaEnglish in Montreal

Downtown Montreal is mostly English speaking, especially at chain restaurants and stores. It's when you're getting into the niche neighborhoods at locally owned establishments that you may encounter some issues.

I've had approximately one negative experience since I've been traveling to Montreal with my husband. Luckily, he's fluent, so we never have trouble. Although, it is uncomfortable to be sitting there like a dummy when he's yukking it up with the server.

I LOVE MONTREAL!!

Thats my life every day her in Nicaragua, lol Very few people speak English! Luckily my wife is fluent! If your nice to others or try to speak a bit of their language, it goes a long way!

CanadaBank accounts in Canada

okay, seeing as how my last paycheque won't be available until AFTER I'm in the US, I'll HAVE to leave the card with my parents, (so they can deposit my cheque of course!)

(#######.. do I really have to start writing check soon? Is it a prerequisite of living in the US or anything?)

I usually still write cheque and get away with it,lol

I was planning on doing the same thing, because I have a nice emergency credit line, and would have to pay it off in full if I move out of the country otherwise!

Does PC financial allow a second card? (figured I'd ask you rather than call them and let them get on to me!)

Only if that person is on your acct!! My parents are not on my acct. Thus they have my only card! For me its no big deal as when I go back to Canada, its to see them. But I could just put my parents on the acct and thus they could get a card.

CanadaBank accounts in Canada
If you have a Presidents Choice Account--if u tell them ur moving to the USA, they will want you to close the acct!! I just changed the addy to my parents!!

I think most banks have online access!! So checking the acct is no big deal!

If you make so much interest, it has to be reported. Of course banks give such low interest on ur normal chequing acct, its prob not going to happen, lol I think 1 has to make like $10. You would be better off taking it to the USA and putting it into an acct like ING, but their interest rate is like 1.3% (Just a few yrs back it was over 4%)

When ir comes to USA banks--like car insurance, health insurance, etc etc etc, you really have to shop around to get the best deal that suits you. I think bank of america just announced as of Jan 2012, they are going to charge ya $5 a month to use their debit card! No clue if u keep a min amt in ur acct it gets waived! We love USAA!! cheers
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2011-10-17 07:22:00
CanadaBank accounts in Canada
I just keep a min amount in my Cdn account--less than a $1. And give my parents a 2nd debit card. Once you move to the USA--ur no longer able to get those GST rebate cheques. If you do a search, you will find info on that. No real reason to leave a lo tof $$ in a normal chequing/savings account as 1 is really making no interest off it.

1 thing One should do is make sure ur credit card does not charge you any international service fees!! I know my Capital 1 CC does not, but my plain jane Citi bank one does! And the Capital 1 CC gives a decent exchange rate, so I use it a lot back in Canada and where ever we travel.

CanadaBank accounts in Canada

Hi - I apologize if I wasnt more clear in my question. I want to leave the cash in the Canadian bank accounts and then convert it to US money early next year, but this will be after I am in the US (POE). Will I be taxed or penalized by either the CRA (Canada) or the IRS (US).

Thanks very much.

No! As in my other post, recommend Customhouse!! Once u have ur acct set up, ur good to go! U can check on the rate they are going to give! Its almost like a game, lol As they quote u a rate, its good for 60 seconds! Or simply hit refresh. it could be better or worse! On small amounts, its not a huge difference, but if ur talking many $1000's of dollars, the rate change can make a difference! And of course you can just not accept the trade and try again later on. I recommend people set up an account as it is free to do so! And you can chech the CH rate and ur banks rate and see which 1 is better. A few yrs back when I checked with CH and Bank of Montreal, CH was far better, but that was then!! Cheers
