CanadaScheduled Interview in Montreal

thanks! I just did that. Funny enough I got an automated response saying for any scheduling issues to contact this website: "These inquires should be addressed to CSC Visa Information Services <http://canada.usvisa-info.com/> using the contact details listed here http://montreal.usco...eralinquiries." After I email the CSS Visa info services, I get another automated response with this in it: "Inquiries concerning visa questions or assistance in confirming, canceling, or rescheduling (aside from No Shows) your visa appointment will not be answered through this service." Where the heck do the handle interview scheduling then?? This is very frustrating.

Question: When an NVC schedules an appt for an interview, it is confirmed, correct? We called the consulate and they were telling us something to the effect that the interview is not even confirmed.

Also, in regards to DHL services - do we have to use them? Can we just pick up the visa the same day at the consulate?

HELP!

Your funny!! lol At 1 time they handed out the visa the same day in Mtl, then they went the next day, then it went you had to bring ur own pre-paid envelope and NOW DHL delivers the package! Again, you can ask and a few have been fortunate, but again, you will need a very good reason. And stating your spouse wants to take him back with you ASAP, probably isn't going to cut it! But if you do not ask, the answer is already no!

CanadaScheduled Interview in Montreal

Hello everyone!!

I realize this has probably been asked a million times, but I cant find a related topic.

My husband just got his interview scheduled in Montreal for February 28th. We are hoping to change it to an earlier date in February.

Can anyone advise us on how to do this? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

you can try and email the Mtl consulate---ur case # in subject line--and have a very good reason. Just beware Mtl takes forever to respond to email. Someone had posted a way to get a respoinse, not sure of the thread. Having a very good reason may increase your chances, but do not count on it, but it does not hurt to try

CanadaMoving US citizen before the Canadian gets his visa
In the past, MTL has been a stickler on the domicile issue! In a lot of instances the person went to the Interview, MTL realized the USA citizen was still residing in Canada, so they would NOT issue the visa until the USA citizen went back to the USA and sent in evidence that they had re-established domicile in the USA. And as you know, MTL can be slow! So even after the evidence was sent back in, it took awhile for MTL to send out the Visa! SOOOOOO it may be in your best interest for the USA citizen to head back now and when you goto the interview, you have proof that the USA citizen is back in the USA

CanadaJanuary Interviews in Montreal

Darren had his interview on Jan. 20th.. I was told today his visa was printed-does that mean it is close to being mailed, or is there a chance it will just sit there a while? I would like to hear from others that interviewed in January to see how quickly the visas were received :clock: Also, is the waybill number issued at Montreal, and what is the significance of the reference number?

CanadaK2 interviews in Montreal

I am interested in this too, as even if they didn't need to interview them , they are still subject to the visa fee of $350, so that has to be paid up front. They didn't say the kids didn't have to go or not , so I just scheduled them with me as they are on the visa. Everyone needs a medical as well, and if you don't live next door, 2 trips is usually out of the question. Curious if anyone from Canada, didn't bring their kids with them??

The ones that I recall that did not, went through Vancouver!!

CanadaK2 interviews in Montreal

:-) Yeah, I get that. I just don't want to drag my kids there and then find out after the fact that it wasn't necessary. If USCIS wants them there, that's fine too.

I've sent off an email to Montreal. I was under the impression that they're hard to get any information from, but like "Flames" said, I have the time, I might as well ask.

Thanks all!

and keep asking (emailing)

CanadaWife is Canadian but she's working in Korea

You already filed for the I-130 which means you don't need to file for a green card or a K3. K3 is basically non-existent now anyway. Your wife will be issued a 10 year green card once she moves to the US (based on your I-130).

Here is a guide for the CR-1 (I-130):

http://www.visajourn...tent/i130guide1

You should definitely read a bit more on VJ because you seem a bit confused. You may have some problems - if your application goes through quite quickly (which is doubtful, but it happens) your visa may expire before she is done in Korea (not sure how long CR-1 visa's have until they expire).

I believe she can get the case transferred to the Korean consulate but I am not 100%. I'm sure another VJ member can answer with more certainty.

Here is a comparison to help you (Obviously you are not eligible for K1):

http://www.visajourn...content/compare

Good luck!

married for LESS than 2 yrs = a 2 yr greencard.

CanadaSSN arrival after POE inquiry
Stamp in G'card works as ur "greencard"

If u checked off the box on the DS-230--theoretically it should arrive 10 - 14 BUSINESS days after your POE!! if it has NOT, then head down to ur local SSN office, with ur CDn passport (with visa) and make an inquiry. Be proactive and download (and fill out)the form from http://www.socialsec...nline/ss-5.html

Not sure on the actual time frame on getting the actual greencard! Was a month back in 2004,lol Normally you get a "welcome to the USA" letter first (quite often 2 or 3 of them) then a few days later the actual card!

And if he doesnt know, make sure you ask how much more he will charge?? My American in laws as a favor, said they would do my USA/CDn taxes 1 year! Their accountant wasnt sure on how to do the CDn taxes! So they had to do a lot of research! And guess who pays for the research time, lol Not me, but my inlaws! Was a lot of $$$$$$.

CanadaFINALLY - moving to the US!

Okay question - My parents have always done my taxes for me (I give them my medical receipts, T4, and anything else) and they hire someone to do it for all of us (they've always done mine for free). So if I call now will my parents not be able to file taxes for me? I'm leaving my bank account open (my mom has power of attorney). I've always had them direct deposit my tax return. I really don't want to mess it up for that because I don't know how to file taxes on my own and I think it would be super difficult filing from the US.

Thank you :)

taxes for canada remain fairly easy, not much of a difference from previous years!! There are multiple tax threads here on the canada forum

CanadaIR-1 for Canadian wife via Montreal

Hello, I am unsure how to navigate the site yet (since I never posted before) however I hope that the more experienced people can put this brief timeline and review where it will help more people. I found your site useful to assess how long it would actually take for processing of various stages of the visa, and so thought it would be fair to briefly summarize our own experience with the IR-1 path we took when I sponsored my
Canadian wife.

Timeline:

10-16-2011 ;; I-130 Petition sent to Chicago lockbox
10-18-2011 ;; NOA1
10-21-2011 ;; NOA2 (no, this is not a typo. It really took 3 days. Not sure why.)
10-25-2011 ;; NVC receipt of case
<<fees paid, electronic submission of all documents at most a day after requested; no RFE's were issued>>
12-13-2011 ;; NVC Case complete
1-12-2011 ;; MTL Interview data scheduled for 2-13-2012
2-13-2012 ;; IR-1 visa granted
2-15-2012 ;; IR-1 endorsed at POE

Total process done in less than 4 months, which is exceptionally fast as far as I can tell, with no lawyers and no advice with the exception of this website. Just follow the instructions, submit the civil documents electronically, complete the DS-260, and bring all your originals to the interview. That's it.

Lessons:

a) Elect to participate in electronic processing with NVC; keep calling them even when they give you stock processing times;
b) Get your IRS tax transcripts for both the current and previous year, since this saves a lot of hassle;
c) Travelling back and forth from Canada to US during this whole time, for her, was no problem.
d) When selecting DHL/Loomis delivery location in a rush: select Dorval, and typically it will arrive the business day after the interview for pickup (i.e. mon interview -> wed. morning pickup of visa/passport)

Best of luck to all of you.

Yep super fast!!!! Congrats

CanadaEI while waiting for Green card?
awhile back some K1'ers with no EAD were able to get $$$$ right away. I guess its like anything else when u deal with the govt--it all depends who is working ur case!! Sometimes its good to have a person that isnt up to speed with the laws working ur case, lol

CanadaEI while waiting for Green card?

EAD stamp is not for K-1s, if one is given it does not authorize the K-1 holder to work. You need to apply for the EAD card if you want to work before the green card.

At 1 time he k1'ers could get an EAD stamp at a very few POE's!! 1 of the last ones to give the EAD stamp was JFK. But The process has changed.

CanadaEI while waiting for Green card?

Wow, Flames, you answered this for me on CanucksAbroad just yesterday! Funny how topics seem to come up. I looked over the links you sent me, and the only way I can see around the wait, is if you are lucky enough to find a POE officer to give you a stamp for your EAD right away... does that ever happen?

Yrs ago SOME POE's gave out the sought after EAD, but that appears no longer the case. And I think even if one did get the EAD at the POE, it would have became null once u got married????? I came on a CR-1, so dont follow the k1 that much.

Stuart&Thea---Vj is sort of like fashion, keeps coming and comes back again, lol These questions get asked a zillion times, lol

CanadaEI while waiting for Green card?

So basically the only way you I would be able to claim EI from canada is once I get my Greencard and have authorization to work.

Yes. If you were pregnant, then thats a different, lol, one could collect maternity benefits. And no, I didnt see any mention of pregnancy, lol

CanadaEI while waiting for Green card?

Hello to my fellow canadians,

I applied for a K1 visa in early Feb, so I just started this long process, my question is after looking threw this site am I able to claim EI from Canada after I immigrate to the states and am waiting for my greencard?

According to this link on here it would seem that way.

http://www.visajourn...ing_to_the_U.S.

Does anyone here have any info on actually doing it and what you need to do to qualify for it?

Any info would be great,

Cheers

To be able to collect Ei--one has to be legally able to work!! With the K1, ur not legally able to work until u get ur EAD or greencard! There was a time when some k1'ers without the EAD were getting EI, but I believe that was because the CDN officials didnt know the K1 USA immigration rules. I do believe that has changed, and they are back to one requiring the EAD or greencard

CanadaUS citizen pulled into immigration at Canadian Border

We get that truly we do or none of us would be here. Whatever you throughts are, or attitude is towards this encounter, enough of us who have done no wrong have been pulled into seconday and interogated etc. Some of us on both sides of the border, and some interogated by their own country. We were just offering advice on the kinds of things that send up red flags. You have to keep in mind, the border people are doing their job with the thinking that everyone is an immigrant or possible threat until proven otherwise, even if in a court of law its innocent until proven guilty.

Yes it is funny how on a site where people give advice, and are "on the same side" the op sort of gives an attitude to this help! Attitude given at the border won't work in your benefit! A POE officer can simply deny you entry, it is that simple.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2012-02-23 19:00:00
CanadaUS citizen pulled into immigration at Canadian Border

Hmmm.... this may seem like a tiny, irrelevant point, but in your original post, you say you were traveling "back" to Canada. Almost makes it sound like you were just visiting PA and now you are going home. I could be wrong, and way too detail-oriented, but if I were Canadian border patrol, that language would send up a red flag to me.

Just sayin'

I think those who are suggesting routinely carrying "proof of ties to your home country" with you as you travel have it right.

Best wishes!

Maya

Thats a big thing for anyone when visiting Canada/USa (other countries) A lot has to do on how you handle yourself! They are looking for people that are lying! As well, using the wrong words can set off alarms. You may be visiting, but you mistakenly say "live" that sets off alarms. being all nervous, not looking the POE official in the eyes, etc etc sets off alarms! Plus if they see a lot of traveling, that may set off alarms! You see it as proof that your returning, they see it possibly as your spending to much time in that country. Best of luck

CanadaUS citizen pulled into immigration at Canadian Border

My surprise is I am doing nothing wrong. I do know the immigration laws and know that I am allowed to pass between the US and Canada to visit my girlfriend and vice versa. If I were trying to reside there I would go through the proper process. I will have my NAFTA work permit in a few months anyhow, which are good for 3 years and can be renewed, so it will not be an issue.

You allowed to visit--BUT you have NO RIGHT to visit! You have to satisfy them that your not living in Canada! And like the other stated, it may appear since you are spending so much time in Canada, it may appear that you are living in Canada. The onus is on YOU to prove that your only visiting. Best of luck

CanadaUS citizen pulled into immigration at Canadian Border

Hi,

My girlfriend and I of 7 months travel back and forth from Canada to the US usually via the Peace Bridge. I am American and she is Canadaian. Last night travelling back from PA, where I live, to Welland ON, where she lives, we decided to take the Queenston bridge due to heavy volume on the Peace bridge. Well, needless to say we picked the wrong bridge and the wrong lane because we caught some CBP on the wrong day. She was asking all kinds of questions insinuating that I am living in Canada illegally, which I am not. We travel back and forth quite frequently and spend equal amounts of time at my residence and her residence. SO, anyway. She gave a yellow piece of paper and had to go into immigration. The immigration officer did let me in but only until FEB 29th as I said we would be travelling back to the US on that day. He also told me to bring bills, mortgage slips, letter from my grad school, etc the next time I plan on coming back to Canada to prove I am not living there, which I am not. What will happen when I leave Canada and go back to the US and then try to come back, with all of my papers of course because I do not want to be refused entry. I am a RN and grad student in the states and a law abiding citizen. Why do they have to give me such a hard time!? Meanwhile, while waiting in line there was people of other descent(I am by no means racist, but they couldnt even speak english) and they were given some sort of papers because she had all of these immigration documents with her. Any feedback appreciated!

Oh, and they said I had to turn some sort of paper in when I leave that they gave me last night. It is a visitor record.

How do they know ur a law abiding citizen and if ur not living in Canada?? The Burden is on YOU to prove ur NOT living in Canada! As they suggested you should have proof your living in the USA. Same for the Cdn---proof that they are living in Canada. And even with proof--they do NOT have to let you in. So do as they say and bring the paperwork with you
