Hard to say! Some people get their visas in the mail ASAP, others it takes awhile.

And then throw in--have u ever lived in, or from 1 of the countries that doesn't get along with the USA---if so, you may be put into AP (I just mention that as its happened that posters forget to mention that piece of info, lol) best of luck

CanadaDriving my belongings to the us
If your traveling with your stuff, most just make a general inventory sheet, nothing too advanced. I made a simple Table on MS word, grouped things together, listed the bigger stuff individually, put down the serial # if applc. And what happens majority of the time, the Customs guy barely even looks at it or look at ur truck carrying it! But much easier to make that list at the comforts of ur home, then at the POE!! Form 3299 is for stuff that you sent unaccompnaied (or for the moving company if one uses one)

http://www.cdc.gov/a...ation/dogs.html From readings on VJ, many of the times, they dont even look at any paperwork for animals coming from Canada. But I would make sure ur dogs up to date on shot and esp rabies. Brought my 2 cats and dog here to Nicaragua--was the hardest thing of the whole process, lol Best of luck

CanadaLast and final question about interview.. Hopefully..

So, I have all my ducks, but the row isn't looking so great at the moment. I'm curious about bringing paperwork to the interview. My fiance gave me a binder of a copy of the exact I-129 package with everything in it. Should I bring it to the interview? I'm thinking they will have it there.. I have extra stuff as well, flight tickets, photos etc. since the original package was sent, I plan to bring it as well. I have the rest of the stuff listed in order I think. Should i have photocopies of the birth certs? Anything else I should photocopy? I will need some sort if ID to get on the plane home and i'm hoping the give me the birth certs back..

If anyone knows of something that might not be mentioned in checklists etc. please share :)

TIA!

:)

oh ps... My son will be with me, at the interview is there somewhere he can sit and wait? I know cause of his age he probably wont be questioned, but I can't leave him either.

The waiting room is fairly large with chairs! Thats where you will spend the majority of ur time while at the Consulate!

I had a plastic accordian style binder (that had like 13 slots) I had copies of all the paperwork and certificates! And brought soem evidence, but not a lot as 99.999% of the time they dont look at it. I had some airline receipts, pictures, but I didnt go over board! Everything I had fit nicely into that accordian plastic binder

Keep ur passport and the interview letter at the very front as the guards will want to see it.

CanadaInterview at Canadian Embassy

Thank you... I am a winnipeg boy. I agree and was not aware that the interview was at my descretion on booking. I have a few family events in Boston Area in Sept and early October so being able to still travel down for a few day or week is important. I have a dated NOA1 Jan 28th and they are currently reviewing Dec31st. So all in all it should work out. Just thankful for all the replies and help on this matter. A banker for 31 years and this is more stressful.

thanks again

If ur in Winterpeg, ur k1 interview should be in Vancouver, which is normally much faster than Mtl!

Guys, I really appreciate you all trying to help me to figure this out. So, it should be "easy" and less expensive if I send them using my K1 visa, I mean sending them a copy o my I-94. I i do this way, I won't be charged? it will be duty free? I just wanna make sure i understood, but i should go to a Ups office this week.
My fiance just got my ticket, I will be flying West Jet, they have the first bag free and charge 20$ for the second one.

Why do did I accumulate so much stuff???/ :crying:

Thanks for sharing your experience.

And they probably have weight limits per back--otherwise people would just load them right up,lol

CanadaMoving issue

Kathryn41, thanks for your reply. So basically if I don't wanna pay the fees I have to wait till I get into the states to proof my right to send my stuff out, right? any other mean I use to send them before being in the states physically I will pay the fee or my fiance.

I was just thinking maybe to pay an extra luggage and take them with me. I will have to pay for checking-in bags anyway.

does Air Canada charge for each bag you check-in or just for extra luggage? I thought the price for your flight was included the bags. I've never paid for regular check in during all this time I travel
Well....

air lines are making big $$$$ on bags!! I belive (check air canada's website) that ur only allowed 1 free checked bag!! And with that 1 bag it can only weigh so much! And they can be VERY picky! If the limit is 50lbs they mean 50 lbs!! I have been 2 lbs over and had to move stuff around. So not only is it the amount of bags, but how much each bag weighs!! But check air canada website! All airlines have similar baggage limits, but I avoid Air Canada like the plague--especially with their labor turmoil!!

CanadaWaiting....Medical re-test

I have to go back to Toronto in 2 weeks for even more chest x rays. Apparently I have baffled the radiologist. He has no idea what this spot is. I also made an appointment with my doctor for Tuesday to see if he can get the ball rolling for a ct scan (which I am assuming would be the next step if these next set of chest x rays still baffles them).

Lets look at the big picture--hopefully it is nothing, but maybe these chest xrays have caught something early--which never may have been caught, if you catch my drift (its late and im tired, lol) I know everyone is in a rush to get to the USA, but maybe in this case the medical actualy served a purpose, other than lightening ur purse/wallet b a few hundred $$$$$. Thinking positive vibes for ya

CanadaMoving to the states while k-1 is processing?
Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:
1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5) Pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

CanadaMoving to the states while k-1 is processing?
I crossed monthly from NS to DC and never asked for proof of ties to Canada, BUT one should always have it on you. The onus is on YOU to prove that you are going to return to Canada, and even with 100% proof that ur going to return, the POE officer doesn't have to let you in! Only people that have a RIGHT to enter the USA is USA citizens!

Saskatoon is 1 of the nicest cities in my opinion, lol Regina, too dirty and my home town of PA, has gone way down hill! I like the small towns, nice and everyone is friendly
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2012-05-20 16:17:00
CanadaMoving to the states while k-1 is processing?

I figured as much. So theoretically I could take a 3 month visit without needing a visa, and if I wanted to stay longer it'd be up to the border official whether or not to let me in, so I guess flying down would be a better option because driving down with my car would probably raise a few more red flags, no?

I'm in Saskatchewan actually, and as far as I know there's no embassy here, as far as I know the closest one is Calgary.

Im from Prince albert--in 12 days spending a month in Saskatoon!!!

As others have said you can spend UP to 6 months in the USA with POE officers approval! They could limit ur stay to what ever the POE officers desires. Having a boyfriend, spouse, raises their suspicion that you may stay (live)in the USA, thus the strong ties to canada MAY be required.

Not sure what the rule is working online while in the USA, probably not a big problem, but the POE officer may think otherwise. But as you will learn, each POE officer sees the rules his own unique way. Yes most visit while the visa process with no problems, but some do get denied entry which is not a big deal--Now a BAN is a big deal, so NEVER LIE to the POE officer. Welcoem to VJ
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2012-05-20 13:57:00
CanadaMoving to the states while k-1 is processing?
1 can not MOVE to the USA without a proper work/relationship visa. You may be able to VISIT for up to 6 months with POE officers discretion.

CDNs do not have to apply at a USA consulate for a visitors visa like people from many other countries have to do--Cdns simply do it when they enter the USA t the border or airport

1 should always have ties to Canada, such as return airfare, letter from employer, etc etc.

From ur other post, ur in Alberta, your k1 interview would take place in Vancouver. If you went the cr-1 route (already married) it would take place in Montreal.

When it comes to piggybacking on a spouses cc, it has to be done a certain way. I forget the actual wording, but if not not in that manner, sure ya have a CC, but it doesnt get reported. I know a few yrs back on MSNBC, they were stating that they were trying to close that piggybacking loop hole

Many have stated that having a CDN American express card-----then when u move to the USA, have the CDN American express CC transferred to the USA side.

If possible have the utilities in ur name--which can be difficult to do as some of them want a down deposit, since you have no Credit history!

As well do a search on VJ---this is a very popular topic. Best of luck

OK, That is good news, however what happens when you have a 3 bedroom house with all your possessions that you want to bring....Should you not make that the first time you POE in order to get everything across with as little hassle as possible?? I mean as far as duty or taxes (or trying to avoid them)..lol.
Also...for instance, say I have a firearm which I want to bring with me, but paper work is not done yet with the atf, would I be hassled if I went over, came back and then tried to reenter at a later date in order to bring it back to the US? I know, I just threw another wrench..or firearm into the senario...

Thanks Flames9_RN for your dedication to this post! You too Hugglebuggles!

I will email MTL to inquire about the number of times one can reschedule.

And, best to be safe than sorry; I'm thinking its better to postpone the interview.

In the past MTL has been very quick on their email responses so I'll do that asap and go from there.

Have a great May 2-4 weekend everyone!!!!

Mtl must like you---as most seem to get no response or it takes forever, lol Personally if it were me, I would keep the interview and then try crossing without using the k1!! You have the nexus and like u said, they never check your passport!! But thats easy for me to say,lol

So since I am going on an IR-1 I can come and go after I get my passport back with my visa in it without actually doing my poe just like I do now, and then save my visa for when I want to poe?? If so that is great news.

No, you can "activate" ur IR-1 the very first time you goto POE with ur fresh Ir-1 visa! They stamp it and that now acts as your Greencard--until ur greencard arrives in the mail. There are have been some cr-1//ir-1 that goto the border, do the processing and head back to canada that same day! They do that to get the paperwork rolling!! With ur ir-1 its multiple entry----where as the K1 as soon as they use the k1 visa, they can't leave the USA until they get the greencard or get AP, or emergency AP
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2012-05-19 07:59:00
Canadainterview june 18...planned travel to US july 3

Don't you have to 'activate' the K-1 at POE? I can't imagine there being a problem if you aren't entering using the visa.

As it has been noted many times--its up to the POE officer! When he opens up ones passport,(looks at his computer) he is going to see the big visa in ur passport, and he /she may want to process it!! Yes some have been able to enter the USA as a tourist and then come back at a later time and then later use the k1. No guarantees in that though! I'm sure our OP would have no problem, but what I think really matters not,lol

Can someone confirm Kaulie's reply for me please....Thanks!

Also, double and triple thanks to all my friends on VJ who offer their advice!!!!! You have really made this process so much easier....this process is so much more complicated than one initially thinks!

I'm going to try to see if I can get an answer in writing, so if its a 'yes, you can cross without activating the visa' I could use this as proof to the customs agent should I need to show my passport, get questioned. and turned away.

The last poster, CdnMom, brings something else to mind.....my son who would be entering after me on his K2....would he also have the same issues....that being, he potentially could have a problem crossing the border prior to activating his K2 visa should he cross to shop, have dinner or do an airport run?????

Thanks a kazillion!!!

Good luck getting that in writing. And what will that writing mean to a POE officer--absolutely nothing! Sounds good though. Keep in mind you have no right to enter the USA. So push comes to shove, they simply send you back to Canada! Just saying that as some people tend to cope an attitude with POE officials. Guess who wins those arguments?

You may be hard to find anyone that has scheduled their interview more than once, as the vast majority want the interview right away!

I'm guessing that the majority do NOT go back and forth after using the k1!! Was 1 gal that tried to--and the POE officer denied her entry! Lucky her got to start all over again going the CR-1 route. People really have to do their homework and choose wisely when picking a visa! Quicker isn't always better.

No 1 can give you a gaurantee on using Nexus to pass or not activating the k1 if they see it---it is all up to the POE officer!! You could cal up the POE ur going to use, but not likely to matter as you probably wont be seeing that officer when u cross!

Almost no different when ur visiting the USA when the visa process is ongoing---all up to the POE officer

Canadainterview june 18...planned travel to US july 3

Wow, I totally feel for you. I am unsure about the whole entry thing after getting a visa too. And I do understand how "convenient" it is in a border city because we go over almost every weekend. As for timelines you could take a look at mine if you like. We got our interview appt via email last Friday and it is scheduled for June 20th. I called T.O. for the medical on Monday morning and finally they returned my call today. We have our medicals set for June 11th.

Now the fun begins...Listing the house by this weekend, making plans to go to TX and stay about a week to find a place to rent. Then come back and do these appointments. Hope the house sells fast too.
My wife is the USC, but also holds CDN citizenship and up until now she has never had US residency, so we have to find somewhere to call home in the US before we get to MTL.
It almost seems like it has been harder for us as we have NO ONE in the US to help with any of this.

I am not going to risk it..As long as our interview goes fine I will wait until we are ready to POE and enter the US at that time. I can always send the wife over by herself to do our weekly shopping and gas.

Lot different situation for you--as your have a Cr-1 or IR-1--u can enter the USA and leave anytime you wish(except for lengthy periods)a k1 can't leave the USA until they get the greencard or apply for AP.

The biggest thing in ur favor is the Nexus pass. Why not try it, but thats easy for me to say as the outcome does not affect me. I'm sure with the July 4th being Holidays, border guards may be a bit more on their toes!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2012-05-16 07:07:00
Canadainterview june 18...planned travel to US july 3

Thanks for your words of wisdom Inky and Flames9_RN.....but the July 3 trip isn't for my POE....as I understand you are permitted to venture into the US after your visa has been issued. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Since I'll be flying out of YYZ...I'll be using Nexus and there will be no face to face with a customs officer. There won't be an issue flying out of Reno as there is no customs there....and once on Canadian soil again at YYZ, I'll be using Nexus again to return. So, unless Nexus red flags me where sirens and whistles blow from the computerized kiosok, no one will even be seeing that there is a K1 visa inside my passport. Of course, should I have to use my passport, do I not have the right to declare this is NOT my POE but a visit while I wrap things up in Canada and showing proof I have ties to Canada...eg upcoming doctors appt, house for sale, etc?

As for travelling on the 3rd...yah, it can be a zoo but we're both used to travelling on holidays...this is the only time we can see each other!!! Argh, but those days will be gone once were together....I long to celebrate our birthdays together...and other holidays like Christmas AND New Years at the same time!! Ahh, it will be so nice...

its up to the POE officer. Yes some have been successful, but if you do have to see a POE officer and he opens up the passport he is going to see it and its all up to him!! He may give you the option of using it --or turn back! Keep in mind only a USA citizen has a RIGHT to enter the USA. Common sense says that ur going to return and use the k1, but common sense isnt always used, lol

I finally got my act together....house is almost ready for listing....school year is almost a wrap.....(man, this is a BIG job!) so I booked the interview (yahoo!).....but date pickin's were slim....May 31st (too soon (I want to see my fam doc for vaccination update)) and June 18th were the first dates available....so I grabbed the 18th.

But I have travel to see the man on July 3rd! I can fly out as I have Nexus but I need my passport to return!!!

I'm really putting all eggs in one basket and expecting to have my passport/visa back by July 3rd....am I pushing it????? Thinking 2 weeks should suffice....but we all are familiar with Murphy's Law. I really wanted something the previous week.....and am thinking about rescheduling with hopes that a date for this week (being June 11) is released. Going to book the medicals tomorrow....and not thinking securing a date for this will be difficult since they do medicals in TO every Mon Tues and Wed.

Can anyone give insights as to timelines? I saw the timeline reference tracker for MTL passport/visa returns but I'm leery of relying on that.

Again, thanks everyone!

u say travel to see the man---you do realize (im sure u do) that the k1 is a 1 time entry?? No 1 can really say on how fats ur passport.visa will be mailed out. Sometimes they are fast at mailing them out, sometimes not!! Summer season is upon us and that brings a few things---summer Holidays AND people being posted out and in--which slows things!!! Cheers

Day 1 is down and we did a little bit better then expected. We made it a little past Chicago (we wanted to get to the west side to avoid the Monday morning traffic) so considering we didn't get started until almost 2 yesterday.....we made out pretty good. Just getting packed up and day 2 will be underway!! Hoping to get close to Fargo today :)

Emma has been awesome and we didn't have a single fuss out of her in the car so we couldn't have asked for more there!

So i Didnt quite make it--but I slept in my CRV for a few hrs, and was driving away by like 0400--so missed the traffic anyways! I loved that drive! My wife thought I was crazy----she didn't go with me--just me and my dog!! I took oodles of pictures along the way and my wife made me a photo album from mixbook.com. I made it to Fargo the next night. Stayed at a Howard Johnson, was ok, room was clean! Safe travels

exactly--as a Permanent Resident of the USA you have to LIVE in the USA. If the POE officer believes ur no longer LIVING in the USA, they have every right to take away your Greencard. I would be applying for USA Citizenship ASAP. When u apply for citizenship, One has to list every visit one takes for 24 hrs or longer outside of the USA.

Hey all....I, too, am guilty of not visiting VJ much after I received my 10 yr GC. Life has been busy. I've got a part time job working 4 hours a day. It works for me!

Larry has just returned to work after five months off due to a strep infection in his foot. It was a wild roller coaster ride but I had my church family for support.

Reading this post brought back great memories of chats and forums. I think the first year I was here we did a secret Santa exchange. I should have stayed in touch better. Now I've been here, I'm sure I'll be checking in daily to see what is happening with everyone.

Acknowledged and understood. However, I am not some Joe Blow from down the street who has a rap sheet or terroristic tendencies or ignorance of the law or unfamiliarity with travel or lack of awareness of customs and excise taxes. At what point does a "Trusted Traveller" become a trusted traveller? Is it with the police checks? How about the FBI checks? USCIS checks? Homeland Security checks? Canada Border Services? The answer is never. Why have these trusted traveller programs if they are NEVER going to trust us?

Even though one is a citizen of that country, the POE guards have every right to ask you questions. Not everyone is a law abiding citizen! And yes some get carried away! When i drove back to Sask, the guard asked me same type of questions and was soon on my way! People were taking forever gettign through the USA customs on my way back! They were doing a quick search of everyone! And i even got extra treatment--got to speak with the agriculture gal,lol They have an important job to do! Labour Day weekend...already. Seems to me this year has gone by very quickly. It doesn't feel at all like fall here, it was 96 degrees yesterday, and meant to be hot here all week.

I found it strange that children here go back to school mid-august. They've been back here for a couple of weeks. Maybe it's my age, but I don't recall heading back until after the first week-end in September. Would suck to be in school while the weather is so nice.

That's a beautiful road trip, wonderful in the fall when the leaves are changing. Have a great time!

The ones that go back mid aug I think get out earlier in June.
