CanadaApplied for Employment Insurance - Have a Couple Questions

I came to the USA last Thursday on an IR1 Visa - so I have my temporary green card in my passport with a stamp in it 'Admitted August 23.' I applied online for employment insurance last Friday, Aug. 24th. I checked off reason for quitting something to the effect of 'following family members' etc. Anyway, at the end of the application it stated no further information was required at this time. Do I not have to send in my ROE's? I found it very strange they didn't ask me to mail them in since my employers wrote in the comments section that I quit to 'follow my spouse to the USA.' Also, what happens next? They have my new USA address. Will they send me something in the mail? Am I supposed to call them? I don't have my SSN yet - it's supposed to arrive here within 3 weeks of POE. However, the customs & immigration officer at POE said I'm eligible to work right now. Do I need to provide them with my SSN before I start collecting if I get approved? If anyone has recently been through this process and can answer any of these questions I would be so grateful. I have read tons of posts in the EI forum and although there is a lot of info I couldn't find anything related specifically to the questions I have. I have worked full-time for the last 8 years and definitely have a lot of hours and quit to move here. Do the claims ever NOT get approved for interstate EI? And if so, for what reasons?

Was back in 2005 when I did the EI thing, so I may be of little help, lol I recall mailing in my ROE--but not 100% positive, as well I mailed in a photocopy of the Visa (endorsement whatever u want to call it,lol) in my Passport! Along with a note stating I came in on a Cr-1 and that I am eligible to work right away. I'm pretty sure I didnt send in my SSN, as I waited awhile for it to arrive--I was relaxing, lol

If after 10 to 14 BUSINESS days no SSN---print of a copy from http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/ fil it out and go inquire at ur local SSN office!! They will look it up and most likely say, no ur not in the system--so please go fill out a new form!! VIOLA--u hand over the already filled out form---along with ur passport and birth cert for ID. My new SSN arrived 1 week later!! I believe you can go back in person the next day or so and they can tell you the #---but will not tell you in person!

My initial claim was refused---but I was in the Cdn Air Force----they said since I broke my contract that I was not entitled to it! I appealed and won!! But most people dont have to go through that.

In the EI forum above--someone listed the phone # to call! Some people get called back right away, some don't,lol They wil send you cards to fill out, but many seem to have better luck just calling it in!! And yes like most other govt agencies, they seem to take their time getting started, but ur on the right track since you have applied!! Best of luck

CanadaCanadian Gal - American Guy
http://www.visajourn...content/compare compares the different visas--disregard the k3!!

Everyone is different...Were glad we got married and went the cr-1 route!! Less paperwork, etc etc Everyone has a different opinion on marriage. We had a courthouse wedding, so we could get the paperwork rolling....then later on had a fake wedding, lol We didn't tell anyone, lol so no 1 knew, 99% still do not.

If you go the k1 route, like others have stated, you can't leave the USA--that includes canada until u get Advance parole (AP) or ur greencard!! But take a look at the chart, everyones situation is different. If you don't need to work right away and dont care about leaving the USA, then k1 is propbably the better decision(but more $$$) As well you can't collect CDN EI until your work elgible--where the CR-1 you are work elgible, so can collect (if you qualify--whole thread on that) cheers

CanadaOriginal birth certificate at time of interview? It was already submitted to NVC!
Back in 2004----I know on that last packet it send to bring in certain documents that I ALREADY had mailed in! I had extras so I brought them with me to the interview---BUT they were not required as they already had them!! Hopefully thats works out the same for you. Best of luck

CanadaUnemployed And Wanting To Visit

I know this is a very odd question(s), but long story short, my contract ended with the firm I was with, and now I'm unemployed. I've been wanting to visit Canada to see some family and friends, so my question is: would I be able to since I'm unemployed? Would they need proof that I would be coming back? And would I just tell them that I'm unemployed when they ask what I do for a living? I've recently received my 10-year green card. Hoping I can go visit!

Any help would be great, to calm my nerves and everything.

Thanks!

Ur a Canadian citizen correct??? So as a Cdn citizen you have a right to go back! Canada does not care if ur a zillionaire or broke--if ur a Cdn citizen!! And you have ur Greencard, so no probs getting back into USA. Enjoy ur trip

CanadaGetting a US passport for my child...

He is my biological son, he was born in canada, so we went through the IR1 process for my wife and him, we got approved, and after coming to USA my wife and he both recieved greencards. I was told he is an American citizen now and that all we needed to prove it was to either get a certificate of citizenship or a passport.

I would have thought he would have just would have done a birth abroad and got his citizenship that way---and not have had to pay for the cr-1 route!! At least thats the way it was for my wife many moons ago,lol

CanadaFootball (NFL) vs Hockey
I love hockey, but I really could care less how long this lock out goes!!! The NHL players talk about solidarity--ya right, the big names plan on going over to Europe and playing AND taking away jobs from others!!! The true people that suffer are the ordinary workers that work for the teams (ticket sellers, front office staff, etc etc) the ones not making the big $$$$$.

When it comes down to it, hockey is just (great) entertainment, but now a days 1 has sooo many different options to be entertained. Millionairess fighting with millionaires while the everyday people suffer. So I have no sympathy for their greediness. If you can't survive on their paycheques, one has to be doing something wrong.

CanadaPOE at Montreal airport

It is not a direct flight. My layover is in Atlanta... so I have to POE in Montreal.

It does not make sense to me either that they would schedule me on a flight if i cannot go through preclearance.

I wonder If I could go through them the night before?? Or is it too early...

I will call later this week, right now I need to sleep because it's my interview tomorrow morning!!

Flames9... I'm from Calgary too!! haha ;)

I snooped through the posts and didn't see anything... But I didn't know I could search this. This will be very helpful for any other questions I have.

THANKS, for your reply.

The search feature on VJ isn't awesome, one has to play with the wording!! I'm from Saskatchewan, but am a Flames fan. Have 1 sister that lives in Calgary! I have stayed a bit in Calgary--back when Electric Avenue rocked--which is quite awhile now,lol

Welcome to VJ-----Yours is prob the #1 question asked here in the Canada forum, lol So if you do a search on VJ, you will get tons of hits!

Like Krikit stated short answer is yes!! My 2 cents is down below in my signature! Ensure you bring evidence of ties to Canada with you!! Most likely they wil not ask for it, but they might and it has saved many people from being denied entry! Huge difference between denied entry (no big deal) and a barred entry!! And NEVER LIE!!!! Best of luck!!! Ensure you read the guides at the CR-1 forum, oodles of info!! Best of luck

I was able to get the in-state rate immediately---they were nice enough to base it on my wifes (She is the USA citizen) time spent in the state--which I had to prove by showing her past State income tax returns. Always good to ask--all they can do is say no. Saved me a lot of $$$

CanadaContinuing Education

Thanks for the responses. They are appreciated!

I am not sure what way to go with my studies. My credits will transfer over however my biggest fear is that the education I've already paid for will become stale if I wait the year.

What I was thinking was (from what I have been told which could be very wrong) I will be allowed into the country on my K1 visa to get married but then i have to come back until the rest of the immigration completes. If I apply for my FL drivers license and SS cards will that not establish my residency? If one cannot do that.. do you not establish residency when you immigrate to a particular state by default? If so why then do i have to be in FL for a year before paying instate fees (vs out of state fees).

Someone asked where I'll end up - it will be St. Petersburg, Fl.

The whole immigration thing, I find, so confusing. Add that on top of nursing studies and one can go mad :S

Your incorrect on the k1 process--after your interview in Vancouver(As I think u said ur in BC), you will POE into the USA, they will Endorse the visa, then you have 90 days to marry! You CAN NOT leave the USA until you apply for Advance parole (AP) or get the green card!!! Well you can leave--you just will NOT get back into the USA

Once you move out of Canada, your no longer a resident of Canada---so I would think if you planned to try and complete ur Cdn classes online---you would have to pay the higher rates as well

With regards to Florida----Check the various schools. When I moved to Virginia from Canada, my school based my residency on my wife--thus I paid the in-state rate! Of course there may be few schools that do it that way, but does not hurt to check, saved me a lot of $$$$.

In the USA another route to get get your RN's is the Associate degree. Less time and usually less $$$! And then let the hospital pay for ur BSN!! Thats the route I was going after I got my Associate degree and was working on PCU.....but then we moved to Nicaragua. Now will prob try and do it online, but now at my expense!! There is also a Diploma route, but not many programs left of that. allnurses.com is a decent nursing forum. Best of luck

CanadaPOE- while on business trip?

I'm back with another question :)

My husbands IR1 visa was approved and received last week. (YAY!!!) And it expires Oct 11th. We live on Vancouver Island and therefore it is a pricey endeavor for us to go down to the US involving a ferry ride that costs $160 round trip. We obviously would rather pay for the ferry than lose the visa, but my husbands work has just asked him to travel to Spokane, WA for a work trip next weekend. They would fly him there via Seattle, WA and he would be in the US for 2 days to do maintenance on a Canadian registered airplane before flying back.

Any guesses if it will be a problem to activate his visa on this trip even though it is obviously not his official move to the US?

We are planning to make our official move by the end of November, but we have a small child and the visa was only approved 3 weeks before it expires(because of medical), so should they be a bit more lenient on letting him activate it without actually moving?

Thanks for the help!

Since it is a IR-1, he can enter and leave when he wants. There are many that Go to Poe to get it activated (endorsed) and turn right around that day back into Canada---as it gets the paperwork rolling. So he should be fine. One has up to TEN yrs to bring ur personal belongings down

CanadaConfused, need help please.

Ok, I got the Courier thing sorted out, although it's come up as DHL, not Loomis, but I assume this is ok.

Still need to know about a fee? Is this for CR1 visas, or just K-1s? We are applying for CR1, we are already married.

Also need to know if I should stick to exactly the documents requested on the interview letter or if I should bring proof of relationship even though it's not asked for.

Sorry for all the posts, panic totally set it. :(

1 should always bring evidence of ur relationship, just do not go overboard--quality of quantity! 99% of the time for a cr-1, don't even ask for it, but always good to have a few pics, travel receipts with you. I can't comment on a fee for a cr-1---as when I went thru it in 2004 and there was no further fees for a cr-1 at the time of the interview --I stil don't think there is, but can't say for sure.

Canadalast night in Canada...
The last night DEc 16 2004!! Almost 8 yrs ago!! Just me and my packed up boxes in my 1 bedroom apartment in Greenwood NS!! Left my dream job with the Cdn Air Force, but we all make sacrifices--I know my wife has made plenty for me. Its a very surreal feeling as the process feels long--but in my opinion we Cdns have it pretty easy compared to many other countries, but it still feels long. It was a very odd feeling loading up my Uhaul on Dec 17 and by noon hitting the road!! I don't think it truly hit me until I got the the POE!! I'm very fortunate to have a spouse that understands that yes Canada/USA are neighbors, but we are two different countries! She understands my need to go back to Canada, my need to get my Canadian Tattoos re-inked!! I have truly been blessed, she is more than I deserve. But that still does not miss me missing Canada, but at the same time I love the USA, but Canada will always be my home country!!

CanadaWorried About Interview Evidence and Point of Entry

Another question: My Ontario driver's license expires this December, I just got the renewal form in the mail. Should I renew it? Or will I be able to easily obtain an Ohio driver's license once I am down there?

Every state has its own regulations when it comes to drivers licenses---some its a simple 1 ofr 1 exchange, others make you do a written test, some both a written and drivers exam. So check out Ohio's DMV--or do a search on VJ for Ohio drivers test and see what others experiences are... then throw in the confusion as your a k1,lol

CanadaWorried About Interview Evidence and Point of Entry

Take a look at the interview discussions in the Portal Consulates section. They don't open the front door until 7:30, and they don't remove the barrier to the elevator until 8am sharp. So if your appointment is at 8, then getting there before 7 is a good idea so you can get a low C number. Although a low number does not really mean you will get done any faster, but it doesn't hurt. You are on a K1, so your stuff is done on another floor. CR1s are on the 19th floor. But still look at the consulate reviews to help you figure out when to get there.

Used to be all on the same floor

My interview date is also on the 9th.... hope to see codygrace there.

Anyway, my wife is bringing over her Toyota, and there is a cost involved (we were given an estimate of $400 for the inspection and importer fees). You also need to have a form from the manufacturer stating it conforms to US emmisions and safety standards, etc. She also has a Harley Davidson... now that one is going to be tough to get in... go figure, it was built in the USA, but requires modifications (speedometer) and the HD letter of compliance, and an importer to process it.

Luckily we have 1 year to get all that done once she becomes a resident. Toyota is already done TG.

She will be a resident of the USA as soon as she enters and a non-resident of Canada!

What is the success rate with Canadian approvals?
I see so many people in countries over-seas constantly getting denied.
Usually because it seems they 'said something wrong' or even just blatantly don't understand what didn't go right.

Does us having been married this long gain us any leniency in the process?
I would assume, the longer you've already been married, the more "believable" a marriage seems, no?

If one is strictly a Canadian (Have not immigrated from a not so friendly country) and you have no criminal background, it s probbaly like 99% Canada is not a high fraud country.

Just wondering if we have the chance of hitting it this year (planning vacation days! lol)

They never interview him?! I'm confused now lol.

The Canadian is the one that will be interviewed......The American will NOT be. The American may goto the Consulate and be with the Canadian, but may or may not be allowed to go into the small room where the interview takes place. In Canada the American does NOT have to attend......In other countries with high fraud rates, the American is strongly recommended to attend...Not thew case in Canada

CanadaIN LOVE - WHERE TO START, WHAT VISA? ahhhh
Everyone situation is different! If one has lots of time on their side Like I did as I could not be released from the military right away, we went the cr-1 route

If one has to work right away--go the cr-1 route! If you have to leave the USA (including to Canada) Maybe better to go the cr-1 route

If you just want the faster route---normally its the k1 route. I say normally as every now and then a CR-1 gets extremely lucky and finishes around 6 months. if you don't need to work for 2-3 months, then go then go the k1 route! One can leave the USA with Advance parole (AP) and one can get it expedited in an emergency situation!!

Comparison chart explains it fairly well!!

My husbands Police record was only valid for three months in Algeria. Check it by country. When he went for his interview he had to get another one since the original one sent expired, way under a year. The embassy called him on it, but we were prepared with the new copy. But the previous answer was from Canada... so they override here.

As for the vaccinations, yes you can get them anywhere, however my husband got his during his medical exam. They just gave him any he was missing and was good to go.

Canadatime frame questions

Just curious if anyone knows the time frames on these 2 things:

Vaccinations- Correct me if I am wrong, but you need to have these done before for the medical by your family doc???? How recent does that have to be? Can I do 6 months ahead? Or does it have to be within a certain amount of time of your interview?

Police Records check- When does this have to be dated? again, Can I get it done well before my interview? I know there is about a 2 month wait at my local police station for them. I am wondering if I can go ahead and apply for it and just have it, so when I need it, its done without having to stress about it. Is getting it 6 months too early? Does the date on it matter if its within a year?

Thanks for your help :-)

Police check has to be with in ONE year! No criminal record = NO fingerprinting!!

CanadaBrand new - lots of questions

Personally, we are doing the K1. We picked this option because we want to live together after we are married. Don't want to spend any time apart after the wedding. This will provide us the ability to be together while we AOS. It also gets the major background checks/medical/police clearances out of the way for AOS so you only have to do a few more things. Its far easier I think. Thats my personal opinion. We just didn't want to spend the first year of marriage apart. That was the biggest thing for us.

K1 route is more expensive. Because you have to file the K1 paperwork before the AOS. Its like an extra step. But, if you're married and they deny your CR-1 you're kind of screwed in a way. Going K1, its rare to have AOS denied unless you're a fraudulent couple and only entered into marriage for immigration purposes. Immigration for us has been hard. We only live 7 hours apart though so I've made the trips to Canada every 3-4 weeks to see him. That has made it easier. For couples who live on different continents their opinions might differ from mine.

For us, proving a bona-fide relationship has been easy for the K1. Going CR-1 route you have to prove a bona-fide marriage. From what I've read, thats harder when you live in two different countries. For AOS, we will have to prove that, but my fiance (husband when that time comes) will be living here and we'll have time to get his name added to bank accounts, beneificary for insurance, added to my health insurance through work, add his name to my car note...etc. Thats a lot harder when he lives in another country and doesn't have a Social Security Number. But not impossible either I guess.

For each couple, the reasons are different why they want a certain route. In the end, our main goal is to be with the people that we are in love with and want to spend forever with.

CR-1 is no harder or easier than a k1 FOR CANDIANS to prove a relationship! 99.999% of the time Montreal asks for no proof at the time of the interview(ie pictures, letters) In some countries that may be the case--but not for canada. As a Cdn still iving in Canada, one is still covered by the Cdn healthcare system, so no need to be covered on a USA spouses health care coverage. Its really not that difficult. Your making it harder than it truly is.

CanadaMontreal waiting times for CR1/IR1

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how long it takes for US consulate to return the passport with Visa? My CR1 interview was last week and the interviewer told me I should get it within 5 days. I still haven't gotten it. It has been 7 days now. Also whats AP?

It can take as little as 2 days or up to 2 weeks!! Sometimes their is no rhyme or reason why it takes so long. Keep in mind the USA consulates were closed this past Monday due to a holiday.

AP--Additional Processing. Did they tell you that? It can happen if you come from a country that isn't soo friendly with the USA (ie Iran, etc etc)

CanadaGetting Canadian Passport Picture in US

Just had my wife's Canadian passport picture taken at the local US Postal Service office for $15. They used a fancy camera that actually has templates on its screen for the face size/position requirements of most countries. They used a white background screen and a flash, which left a very small shadow an inch or so below my wife's ears. I hope that isn't going to be a problem. The clerk also stamped both pics with the office name/address, dated both and signed one of them before I could stop her. The instructions I had said nothing about the pictures being signed by the photographer and said only one picture should be stamped/dated, not both. She said most countries want the signature of the photographer. I also just realized she wrote the date but did not prefix it with "Photo taken" like the instructions show in the example. Anyway I hope the pics will be accepted despite all that. They all seem like minor things but sometimes bureaucrats are ridiculous about following instructions exactly.

Also, she only had a cutting device for 2x2 pictures but the instructions call for 2.75x2 so she said we could cut them at home. Since the camera was set to Canadian template it printed 2.75x2 (actually very slightly smaller so, again, I hope a slight white border isn't a problem). Since the pics weren't cut when she signed one, I noticed the bottom of one letter is going to be cut off when I cut the pic. Blarg. So the Canadian bureaucrats have plenty of little reasons to reject the pics but hopefully it will be ok. The lady at the post office mentioned that some countries charge exorbitant rates like $300 per application and if they reject your pictures they make you pay $300 again to submit new ones! So at least that's not a problem with Canada.

Hope it works out---Canada is extremely picky when it comes to pictures--
