CanadaPolice Records Check Prices
Yep it goes on and it is illegal. BC said a few yrs back they were going to start cracking down on it--as it was costing thew province millions and millions $$$$$ each yr. No clue if they actually did! if Knew that was going on--I would have no qualms of making a few phone calls and alerting authorities!

I dont think there has ever been a picture on a Cdn SIN card.

CanadaPolice Records Check Prices

What did you guys pay for your records checks and where did you have them performed (locally or mail away from RCMP)
Also wondering if the finger printing is required with no criminal history?

Our local police dept is $30 for the check and $33.90 for the finger printing.
And here I thought I read somewhere it was around $20 or $25 for the whole thing

Every place is different with regards to price and how long it takes. Some RCMP stations do them on the spot, some a day or longer--same with the local police station.

No criminal record, = NO finger printing. I'm sure if you do a search on VJ and put in the city, one will find a fair # hits as this is prob the #2 asked question on the Cdn forum, lol

CanadaVisa delivery

mine's b2, the visitor one though..the website travel.state.gov says for nonimmigrant visas, the wait time is 2 day for Ottawa location..I just don't know when it can reach the Loomis location

Majority here on VJ are here because of a relationship visa. And Regular Canadian citizens do not goto an USA Embassy/consulate to get a B2 visitor visa..we get them when we goto the POE....All down in front of the port of entry officer...Thus you may not get a lot of info from this forum. Best of luck

CanadaFinally POE'd today

What is the stamp they put in the passport then?
The same stamp as with an I-94 just with a different classification than B2?

The i-94 is a form (google it) The I-551 is the big stamp that includes your picture and all the info that they stick(glue) into ones Cdn passport. When ur at the POE--they stamp the page--just a plain old boring ink stamp that states the day and where ya crossed. With that stamp, that acts as ur greencard for up to a year. But the actual greencard will (should) arrive much quicker than that.

Grats, definitely gotta cross that border as early as possible on Saturdays.
I've actually found Thursdays are the best days for crossing.
And, completely unrelated, also the best day to go to walmart.

We too will be crossing at Sarnia.
Do you get an I-94 pass in your passport when you cross?
And if you do, do they make you pay for it?
They've made my husband pay for all but (1) of his past I-94s.

cr-1/ir-1 do not get an I-94.

Yes, you can do it after you get married. Bring your marriage license and all your ID to Motor Vehicle and they will give you one if you have Ontario G license.

Just so there is NO confusion--are you in New York?? As each state differs.

CanadaNEXUS and Dual Citizenship - Crossing the border

Thank you! When my NEXUS card said Canadian Citizen the American border guards would always want to see my green card (and sometimes they were quite rude about it). My rationale with the card was change the citizenship to US and avoid that situation specifically. After reading everyone's comments I feel this was the right choice and once I get my US passport I'll be set to bring both with me.

I'm sure as I go back and forth I'll learn what works and what doesn't :)

One just has to remember the USA sees you as only a USA citizen and Canada is like, ok whatever, your outfit matches, you have no guns on ya, please come on in!!

CanadaUpdate on DHL/Loomis Opening Our Sealed Envelope

Unfortunately this mistake was inexcusable. It's a government envelope clearly marked do not open, DHL had no right to open it or any package. I'm just glad Amberlynn's fiance didn't have to wait horribly long to get it back.

Who knows how it was opened--maybe it was torn--or he meant to open another envelope and mistakenly opened this one. As I recall, he left a note and fessed up to it, so prob was not on purpose!

I work on a yacht which travels in and out of the us frequently so I applied outside of the us so I could travel freely in and out of the us.. I was working before I applied though..

But how are you living legally in the USA---are you on a work Visa--as just because you applied out of the USA--does not mean you can work or live in the USA. Best of luck

CanadaExpedite Passport Return After Interview???

Hello Everyone,

I have my interview in Montreal in 2 days. I have read that if you currently live in the US they may return your passport back to you the following afternoon after your interview if you are approved. I am currently legally residing in the US and am wondering if anyone out there has been granted this passport expedite. Any suggestions etc would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks so much :)

You can ask, and they may grant your request...but be prepared for a no. But if you do not ask, answer is already a no.

CanadaThe First Part of the Journey

Lot's to get done and the time is slipping away. My husband and stepdaughter arrive Christmas Eve. After celebrating with my family and what will sure to be tear jerking farewells we shall drive to Cali. According to my 80 odd page triptrak...........i'll be entering at Sarnia from Mississauga. Never been to Sarnia and one crossed Detroit once about 10 yrs ago for a day trip.......(boring).

I'll be driving my Ford Escape 2007. Anything I need to do?

My major belongings will be shipped by a shipping company - so they are going to do the paperwork?

Man I'm scared. Two weeks now left of work, arriving with no job, but hope that SSN arrives by the end of January........so the first 3 weeks i'll consider myself on vacation (why I really need) It's been one year and two weeks since i'll have seen my husband.......be so nice to be held again.

Ok so yes this is the first part of my journey........

Tips, obstacles, anyone else crossing Jan 2nd?

BTW great blessing to all of you......this site has been my saviour many, many times.

Does it have the "stickers" on the car saying it is compliant? My male brain is off a bit tonight, but their are some recent Canada car questions about this. I think Krikit mentioned this last.

And if after 10-14 BUSINESS days no SSN, download/fill it out from SSA.gov and head to ur local SSA office with ur passport and birth cert (for ID purposes) and say--hey, whats up? if nothing is up--hand over the already filled out application and you have the ID. In many cases, 1 week later the SSN arrives!! Best of luck

CanadaImmigration Lawyer -- Can It Help Speed Up The Montreal Embassy At All?
Nope lawyers do not speed things up, if anything slow it down a bit!! We used a lawyer--huge waste of $2500, but we had not found VJ and after my wife talked to an immigration official, he made it sound impossible to do on ones own--wrong!!

1 never knows how long it will take from starting the process to the interview, thus that's why they tell you not to make plans--and if you do, make sure you can get your $$$$ back.

During AOS--one can apply for Advance Parole and if a family emergency pops up, you can get it expedited!

Best thing you can do to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible is READ THE K1 GUIDE!! Understand the process from start to Finish and know what documents you require--police back ground check, any divorce paperwork if applicable, etc etc etc. No 1 cares more about your case--so best to read up on it.

My day just got a whole lot better (I was ready to go on a mass strangling of people spree a few minutes ago mad.gif .)
I just got off the phone with USCIS, and they said I can skip removal of conditions and apply for Citizenship now based on military service, and have the fees waived...?! I'm hoping this is correct, but it sounds almost too good to be true....so I think I'll call back and ask a supervisor.
The only reason I'm in such a rush to get my citizenship is it's very hard to advance without it, so I've been trying to find out what the process is once you're in the armed forces. A few people told me you have to wait a year after you join, but the USCIS agent seemed convinced otherwise, so I guess I'll find out soon...

ya I thought I read somewhere that they have changed the process and made it faster to become a USA citizen if ur in the Armed Forces.

That's a little concerning. 17 lbs in 7 weeks is too much weight loss in too short of time. sad.gif

so,so, they say 2lbs a week, and July has lost about 2.5 lbs/week on average. But it varies with people. (not saying Julybride is a large person, lol) but if your a very obese person, and you start working out, eating healthy, initially your going to loose more than 2 lbs a week. One wants to ensure you are eating healthy, and not starving urself. Good work July

Well, 2 1/2 weeks less than a year after I sent in my I-751 application I am finally approved for my 10 year green card! Yay! On to citizenship now - the window opens in 2 weeks. I'm still waiting for tax transcripts from the IRS so it will be a few days after the anniversary but finally, good news! I was so very discouraged about all of this last week and wrote my Senator asking for his help. They made the inquiry this Monday (I wrote them Friday), and today I get my approval. I think it helped even though we were already in the window - their inquiry got the file off of the desk where it was acting like a paper weight.

I phoned up Cox cable today--we have our Phone, internat and TV through them (With verizon, just have cell phone) and since we rarely use our phone ---mainly use cell phone (verizon) asked how much i would save if I took the phone off! Would only save like $10 a month! So not really worth it, as when talking with family, much prefer using a regular phone, vice a cell phone. But she did say if u signed up for a 1 year service contract, they would chop off $8 a month! So went that route. Had no clue they offered such a deal, never seen any flyers or any rep mentioned it in the past.

Some think moving from Canada to the USA is easy...as many consider us the "same" I truly disagree--we are very much different.
Yes in many ways we enjoy the same type of life style...but the cultures are different. I base that on my travels with the Cdn Armed Forces and now living in Nicaragua--a 3rd world country.

I know people from other countries are affected much more...but its probably expected..where as some think its not going to be such a big deal...and then it truly hits them. I'm kind of a weird person,I'm far more social online and when I was a RN working in a hospital! But out in public, not soo much. But that's me! Sorry the 2nd job didn't work out, I'm guessing if others were let go, they didn't want the smart ones,lol..just sheep that ate the hay and did not think too much! Better things will come along, hang in there. The same may go for ur husband moving to Canada--great for you, maybe not soo great for him. Best of luck
