CanadaGetting ready for my first visit back to Canada!

Ok - it won't matter that my name on my passport and green card don't match?

When I moved my dog to the US from Canada, a rabies certificate is all I brought and nobody ever asked about it. I'm assuming visiting works the same way, but I guess we'll see!

When I drove from DC to Saskatoon last year with my dog--they didnt ask anything about her (I had her rabies cert with me) I think they actually gave her a dog biscuit when I know think of it!!

And I believe others have traveled with their marriage cert when your name does not match the passport

CanadaConsidering moving back to Canada

Jumping in here - as this thread came up when I was googling information on returning to Canada. Canada's immigration website is less than helpful. I'm a Canadian and moved to US 8 years ago when I married my husband. I just have a green card. I never applied for citizenship, since I was sick of filling out forms and sending them money. Anyways we just had a baby and now I want to be closer to my family.

By saying a spouses can stay together in Canada: Does this only apply if the Canadian spouse is already in Canada, or can we just pick up move there while and then apply? I am assuming since we live in US we have to apply first? Assuming that the later is true can we move to Canada once the application is approved or do we have to wait for PR? I'm just so confused as to when we can actually move back during the whole process.

I realize I will have to obtain my american citizenship before we leave unless I want to pay taxes in both countries! So this is going to be a lengthy process regardless!

Your not going to have to pay taxes(double taxed) in both countries--as there is a tax treaty----But if you do obtain USA citizenship, then for sure every yr one has to file US taxes (which ur USA spouse wil anyways) But one will not be double taxed

Grew up in North Central Sask, and we never used Winter tires! Always just All Season tires, but always ensure they had good tread depth! Never had a problem. Would Winter tires be better, sure, but we did just fine.

There was a big business owner somewhere in the USA that sent out a letter to all his employees, that if Romeny did not win, all their jobs would be in jeopardy! Wonder if he will follow through with his threat!!

Canadalife insurance and pensions etc in america

So getting used to my husbands 401k and not having rrsps etc here was hard for me to understand. Everything has an investment aspect to it..

Now that we are signing up for life insurance, well its the same damn thing? Why does everyone want to invest my money when i don't want it invested lol. I want a normal life insurance policy for X amount of dollars period. i don't want one that lasts for 22 years..GOD i'm only 38!

What gives with all these things here and why do they all have this stupid component of investment??

I have an accounting background so I understand some of it but why is there no OPTION for me to not invest period? I don't get it...I miss my RESP'S and RRSP's and my london life right now :(

Many different types of life insurance--it gets confusing, lol Hope ur reporting ur RRSPS to the IRS on form 8891. I was to sign up for life insurance before we left the USA--But I forgot, lol Too complicated

CanadaAnyone get their Canadian passport renewed in 2012?
Not current....but 2 yrs ago--I mailed mine in via USPS (slowest option) and I still had it back to me (in VA) in 3 weeks. At 1 time on the passport Canada website, they had an estimate of time thingy!!

I always like the option when you have a bit of leeway on the time--just in case the medical does not go as planned. That way you have time to deal with the problem

I'm not even sure what the visa is. It's not IR-1 or CR-1.

My father (US citizen) is the petitioner. He filed the I-130 for
me (over 21/unmarried). I am still in Canada.

CanadaVisiting?

I think it will be an issue if you tell them you are driving down and flying back (if that is what you meant to say). What is going to happen to your car? What you call your significant other does not matter much, as long as they believe you aren't staying.

Many people do this---airfare can be a lot cheaper

CanadaVisiting?

I'm going to post here as well and see if any Canadians can give me their take on the situation...

My Fiancé and I are about to send in our package, and I have my vacation booked to see him for Christmas. Since we are only JUST mailing the I-129F petition, I'm wondering if when I cross the boarder should I mention that we have just applied for the K1 visa and are awaiting our approval?

I don't want to go to the boarder and say I'm visiting a 'boyfriend' when I've just applied for a Fiancé visa, but at the same time because I'm driving to North Dakota (2 hours from me) and flying out of there to save money, I don't want to be turned away from the boarder.

I am only going to see him for 2 weeks (dec.22- jan 7) should I still bring a letter from my landlord just stating I've given her post dated cheques and a letter from my employer stating I am due back at work in January? I worry far more than I probably should but i just want to make sure I get there for Christmas with him and his family.

Thanks everyone!

Yep gets asked a lot-- All comes down to the POE officer!! Most have no problems visiting. 1 should ALWAYS have proof that ur going to return to Canada. My 2 cents is down below in my signature

CanadaPreparing documents and evidence of relationship for Interview! How much is too much??

I printed some of my pictures online in full color, don't have Official photo paper but they turned out well on paper... Do you think those will be accepted or no? (we have a few other real pictures too, was just wondering) We've been married 3 years now though so I guess it's not to worry about.

I nor anyone else can tell you not to worry--it is only natural in this case. 99.9% of the time for a married based visa in Mtl they do not even ask for any evidence at the interview. If they do--ur pics should be fine. As well bring a bit other evidence as well. Quality over quantity. Some travel receipts, pics, ur good to go!! I had a short little letter from my mother n law!! Canada is NOT a high marriage fraud country, but of course one wants to be prepared. Of course we don't know everything about you---maybe ur from a country that does not get along with the USA---if thats the case--one would want to bring a lot more evidence. Best of luck

CanadaPreparing documents and evidence of relationship for Interview! How much is too much??
Montreal for most marriage couples rarely asks for evidence--but one should always bring some----quality over quantity! Some pics, flight init....anything that is solid proof--just dont bring piles of it. I had a nice plastic accordion 13 slot binder and had stuff organized. Comes in handy for ur next steps after as well---as you can keep things organized.

CanadaUS citizen marrying Canadian

another questoin ... the police certificate ... hwo long does it take for it to come through and how long is it valid for if done in Ontario??? If i do it before I file for my 130, will it still count?

Time varies from office to office. Same do it same day, some a few days, some a week or two. For Montreal it is valid for 1 year. Its usually 1 of the easiest documents to get, so no real rush to get it. Best to find ur location--and ask them how long it takes. If one has ever had a criminal record--then you would alos require fingerprinting, which can take awhile. NO criminal record, then just the background check is required.

CanadaMoving dilemma

Finally got my visa in hand (now I can believe it is issued). Six months of AP but no complaints, I didn't prepare the domicile stuff before interview. Infact I didn't know its big of an issue for Canadians married to USC living in Canada.

The package states that anyone accompanying me should have visa. So I think original CRBA of my kids along with Canadian passport should work. Their US passports are in US (just arrived).

Anyone crossing border very often after having Green card lately? I have to comeback frequently to sell my house.

You can come and go as you please with ur greencard(or the stamp and I-551 in ur passport)Only time it is an issue if your going to be out of the USA for a considerable amount of time (6 months or more I believe)

CanadaMoving dilemma

Can I request border officer at Port Huron to ensure that SSA is notified?

In either case, I will not have SSN for another 15/20 days ? I thought SSN is issued right at the border. May it was just the automated processing if they forward to SSA. I took it as SSN will be issued right then.

This means that I can't finalize my employment until I have SSN in hand.

No its not issued at the border! On the ds-230 there was a box you could check off if you wanted to apply for the SSN. In a perfect world, by checking that box should generate you a SSN #--but in many cases it does NOT! All the POE officer does is send your visa package up the line.... you can tell him whatever you want, not really going to do anything! And in most cases it does no good going to the SSA office right away as your not in any system...that why they say wait 10-14 BUSINESS DAYS to go and check. Sure you can go earlier...it is your time.

You can work without the SSN #......others on VJ have stated they were able to....Just not able to get paid until they got the #.

After 10-14 BUSINESS days--no Social security Card---then goto ur closest SSA office and ask about it!! Before you go )_ I would download and fill out a new application form--http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/-----so when they say, nope, we don't see a card, you need to fill out a new application--WHAMMO--you hand them over the already filled out form!! Ensure you bring 2 pieces of ID--Ur CDn passport and birth cert.

RRSP is easy,lol--for ur American taxes it is just form 8891. As well you have to notify ur Cdn institution that is looking after them--that you have moved and are now a non-resident of Canada. all very easy

We are driving to Montreal today. I am going to DHL this morning. I am going to be saving all receipts. POE told us to contact the police and file a police report because the custom's officer I spoke with said it is a federal crime for anyone to open that package that is NOT a border/customs officer. I also read on the Montreal website that the only day they are observing as a holiday is today. Tomorrow they should be open. This is a freaking nightmare and I am so angry. UGH!

Should be open friday---I know the USA Embassy here in Nica is open Friday!!

I am the USC so I just contacted my Congressman's office in the city where I live. I am in Canada right now with my fiance until Sunday so if we have to make the trip, we will. Just don't know how helpful that would be with it being a holiday tomorrow. Hoping for a call back. Emailed Montreal and also put in an inquiry on their website. Something has to work one way or another. But I am seriously angry at the DHL guy opened it. I pounded into my fiance's head for 6 months DO NOT OPEN THE PACKAGE! He didnt. Someone else did. How does the DHL man think he has the right to open over people's packages? Thats what I don't get. I am not vindictive...but I am going to file a formal complaint with DHL.

Contact the POE----I'm sure it has happened before.

Fastest way may be for the USA citizen to contact his congress person and have them inquire! Keep in mind Thursday the Embassy will be closed due to USA Thanksgiving! I would send an email ASAP (case # in subj line) As well if you know ur POE--cal them and ask to speak to a supervisor and see what he has to say (and take down his name) 7 hr drive isn't bad--I have driven that far just for Tim Horton coffee, lol

Yes, I'm pretty sure I'm moving to the DC area and it's all interstates and freeways, it's a little intimidating. And yeah, while Tim Horton's coffee isn't the greatest, it's just a comfort thing I guess - knowing it's always open.

Sorry about moving to the DC area, way toooooo much traffic and only getting worse>hopefully you will live close to a metro. On the + side--lots of stuff to do. All the free museums are great

I miss the days when Montana had the speed limit "Safe and Prudent". I hit 115 mph on my car there on the interstate one time, that was fun. In Canada, I got nailed doing about 7 mph over the limit (think it was on a back road or highway and got a $380 ticket or something. I couldn't believe how much it was. I've gotten a ton of tickets (both warning and real tickets) here in the past in about 14 states (yes I drove a lot and fast for many years in the 90's) and the most I ever had to pay was something like $180 for doing something like 20 mph over the limit on the interstate. Still can't believe how much the Canadian ticket was though. That was insane...

Varies from province to province! Speed limit on Trans canada and how much the speeding ticket is! I know at 1 time it was pretty cheap in Alberta, but I'm sure times have changed

Hey guys, I have my interview on Thursday :) . I would like to have a general idea on how long it is to receive via DHL the passport/visa after approval. I live in Québec city. Is it a matter of couple of days or weeks?

Thanks ;)

Some get it in a few days--some it takes longer. Have you always lived in Canada? If not---and more importantly so, if you came from a country that does not have great relations with the USA---your case may get reviewed again, and cause a further delay in the issuing of the Visa.
