CanadaMedisys Montreal - Medical Review
Here's my recap, since a lot of people seem to share their experiences.

My appointment was for 10 am. I got there around 9:30 and the receptionist took my passport, 3 photos, vaccination booklet (optional), and packet 4 letter. I was sent to sit down with a form to fill out, but I'd only gotten halfway through when I was called over to do my x-rays. When they were done I finished the form and gave it back to the receptionist.

Waited a little longer and was then called in by the doctor for my checkup. It was very quick, just the usual blood pressure, flashlight in the ears/eyes/mouth, stethoscope, knee reflex, tummy/back check. Back to the waiting room, then into another room for the blood test (also where they take your height/weight).

Last wait, then called up to pay. Was told the results would be ready in 3 business days. Since they'd seen my vaccination booklet (which I'd thought wasn't completely up to date) and hadn't said anything about it, I asked the receptionist if that meant I didn't need any shots, or if I'd find out when I got the results. She said I didn't need any. Woohoo!

I think I got out at 10:40. So the whole thing was about an hour and ten minutes, which is amazing. Getting there early paid off because they started on me right away.

Have a great day everyone!

Canadamoney and banking, before and after moving

I did this before I moved in 2009, and I have loved it. It was very easy to get my maternity benefits direct deposited into my RBC Canada account and then just transferred the funds online to my RBC USA acct (and if you plan on claiming unemployment when you get here it is the same thing). You will be able to get your tax returns direct deposited into it as well.

And when you travel back to Canada, you can do the opposite. You will have seperate debit cards for each account, so you can use the canadian one in Canada and the US one in the US and avoid all the service/exchange fees.

The only downside is that they only have branches in the southeast so it can be a pain in the a$$ if you need to go to a branch for something, but most things you can work around.

Thank you so much!

Canadamoney and banking, before and after moving

If you have paid any taxes and expect to get a tax rebate when you file your Canadian tax return (it will be the same as normal but you will consider it an 'exit' return and it will only apply to income up to the date you left Canada) then keep a Canadian account open and CRA can direct deposit your refund into that account. It is easier than trying to cash a Canadian cheque in the US. Go in and talk with your bank in person. Let them know you are moving and provide them with your new address. You may be able to change your account into one that is more suitable for your purposes since you probably won't be using it for daily expenses anymore.

Great, thank you so much!

Canadamoney and banking, before and after moving

Some couples combine, some don't - personally we combined our $$$ and my fiance added me to his existing savings and chequing (aka checking :) )accounts.

You can cash out your Canadian account if you'd like, $2500 isn't a massive sum that you can't carry it with you. You could send it ahead of time to your finace via a Money order in US funds through the mail or carry it with you when you move.

You don't really want to use your CIBC debit card down here since you'll incur exchange fees using it in the US and some places may accept it as debit.

Thanks!

One really has to do their homework on Banks!! [...] Lots to ponder. Best of luck

Yeah, I'll have to do some research. Thanks for all the advice!

I already have a US RBC Bank Account that I opened because of a thread on here.

I opened a Canadian RBC Account and they did up the paperwork to fax down to the US account people. I can transfer money to and from the US account without fees. I have a Check Card for the US account and a debit card for the Canadian one.

Right now I'm planning to keep my Canadian account open for a while after I finally move down there and give my mum a bank card for it. If I get any cheques in Canadian funds then I can just mail them up to her for her to deposit.

Cool, thanks.

Canadamoney and banking, before and after moving
I am pretty lost when it comes to the whole money aspect of this. I'm not savvy with banking in general, so I'll surely ask for information at my bank itself, but if anyone can give me the basics that'd be great!

Right now I'm with CIBC. I work part-time and will probably have around 2,500$ in my bank account when I'm about to move. I've also got 2 Visa cards. Since that's not a large amount of money, would I just move and go about my business with my debit/credit cards til my account is empty? Wire my fiance the money (minus plane ticket and pre-POE spending)? Or do you find a bank ASAP upon entering the US and then transfer your money into your new account?

CanadaDocuments for interview
1) Something I DO NOT need to bring is my copy of the initial K1 petition packet, correct?

2) I've noticed that some people list things from Packet 3 (namely the 156 and the DS-230)as things they are bringing. Aren't those forms the ones that the embassy already has and that I'll be signing in front of them?

3) The checklist says to bring "the original and one copy" of the forms listed. Does this mean that for, say, the I-134, I have the original, the photocopy, AND a third copy at home?

Thanks!

CanadaNeo-Citrin= What is the "American Equivalent"?
I had a really bad cold when I went to visit my fiance in the US -- so you can only imagine my horror when I found out they wasn't Neo Citrin ANYWHERE! I ended up drinking super hot boiling water with tea (I used Red Rose) and squeezing half a lemon. I did that for a week straight, drinking it about three times a day or whenever my throat would itch or I would feel horrible. I also took Tylenol Day & Night as well and my cold went away! smile.gif It works!

CanadaWhere are you from in Canada?
I'm from Winnipeg (born, raised and still living in!) and my fiance is from Portland, OR. smile.gif I'll be moving to Portland after the visa is approved. Our "legal" wedding will happen in Portland, of course, at the courthouse, with our church wedding (in front of family & friend) happening next year in Canada. I just wanted to say how much help these forums have been -- I was a lurker for the longest time, and now that I've gone through part one, going through the rest of it will be easier with me not lurking anymore! I can't describe the amount of pressure/stress we were under just to get our I-129F out... but now that it's sent, all we're waiting for now is NOA1. So, our journey to getting me to the US has officially begun! smile.gif

CanadaMedicals in Winnipeg
I'm looking into getting my medical done, but by the looks of it on Packet 3, the only places I can get it done is in Vancouver (which I'll most likely go if I can't get it done in Winnipeg since its where my Consulate is), Toronto and Montreal. I know some people here have gone to Dr.Drexler. Would I still be able to go to him, or would I have to go to Vancouver to get my medical done?

CanadaMedical or Interview
After going through Packet 3 a thousand and one times, I feel ready to send it off tomorrow. I do have some questions though --

1) Should I send off the faxed sheet & then schedule my medical or
2) Should I schedule my medical, and then send the faxed sheet?

Since I'll be flying to Vancouver, I wanted to make sure that I was able to be there for a couple days, and I wanted to make sure that I would be able to get the right dates. What would your suggestions be?

Thanks for your help! smile.gif

CanadaMedical/Vaccination Question
I got the interview day that I want! Now, it's all about scheduling my medical. I'll be going to the Vancouver Consulate in a few weeks (eeps!), and Woking Medical Clinic to get my medical done. Since my pediatrician retired, I can't get my records of when I chicken pox. I never got the Varicella vaccine, but my Mom did say I was 4 when I got it. Do I need to get the Varicella vaccine? Would I just be able to tell them when I got it, or do I actually need the proof? Help!

NOA 1
RFE (if any)
NOA 2
P3 Letter
DS230 with supplementary forms
DS160 + 1 copy
copies of DS160 Receipt
copy of biographical info on passport and all relevant pages
Xpresspost or Priority Guaranteed Mailer

I didn't see any of the above on your list . . .

CanadaInterview Review at the US Consulate in Vancouver
QUOTE (Carlawarla @ Nov 20 2009, 06:23 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Congratulations! rose.gif Thank you for your detailed review. Don't forget to copy and paste it in the Reviews section here on VJ! That's incredible you had to wait that long...I can imagine you were a bundle of nerves! What does your being from Winnipeg have to do with when the visa will be ready? This is the first I've ever heard of people not being able to get their visas the next day in Vancouver. It's very disheartening to hear this. Hoping you can get back to us, as I know we've always been clear to those interviewing in Vancouver that they can pick it up the next day!

While it's been 3 years since I had my interview, they used to have all visa interviews in the morning, and then have all passport with visas ready by the afternoon. Now that interviews can be in the afternoon, they've normally been ready the following day.

Thank you for the Congratulations! The US Consulate in Vancouver's reasoning on to why I couldn't get my K1 Visa today (Friday) since I had to go home was because, according to her, is that they have been really busy -- especially since their system has been buggy lately. If I waited in Vancouver until Tuesday, I could have went home with it... but there was no way I could extend my hotel + airfare stay. sad.gif I didn't worry too much though -- she said I could track my Visa package with the prepaid envelope I gave her. Can't wait to get it!

CanadaInterview Review at the US Consulate in Vancouver
After I posted my medical review, I thought it would only be appropriate to share my experiences with you all about how it went at the US Consulate. I was able to communicate with them via e-mail several times, and they were always able to get back to me the next day. When it came to scheduling my interview, I e-mailed them to let them know that I wanted to schedule my medical the day before my interview, and make sure that it would all be done in the same week so I wouldn't have to go back and forth between Winnipeg and Vancouver. The next day after I had sent the e-mail, I received a reply, getting the date that I wanted as long as I faxed my checklist.

Anyways, to my interview! I left my hotel at about 12:30ish as my interview was at 1:00pm. I headed over to the Consulate in a taxi, and got there at about 12:40ish or so. To get into the Consulate, you have to go through one door, where there is a security guard standing there. Because I was a little bit early and because the guards weren't back from their break yet, I was told to come back after a few minutes. To the right of the consulate is a Starbucks, so I just waited in there for a little bit until I had to come back. When it was about 12:50 or so, I went to the door that lead into the Consulate again, where there were three security guards. The first guard opened the door for me, the second searched through all my folders and told me to remove my jacket, along with my watch and belt, and then hold onto my jacket while I went through the metal detector. After that, they gave me back my things and I headed up a flight of stairs, and walked through a door. I went to the right, and there was someone waiting there. She asked me where I was going, and I told her to the 20th floor, for my K1 Visa. She pressed the button and swiped a card, and then I was on my way to the 20th floor. When I stepped off the elevator, there's another set of security to go through. Lucky for me, the guys who were doing the security were super funny and sweet, and kept me laughing. When I was done getting everything together after going through security, they asked me what I was there for (K1 Visa) and then gave me a piece of paper. On it was my name, and they wrote down a number (I was 4... funny, because I was 4th in line at my medical, too!) After that, they opened the door for me, and then told me to go to the left and to window B, which was in the middle. I placed my paper there, and then headed into the waiting area -- which was PACKED with people. I sat beside the girl I met at the medical who was also from Winnipeg (definitely thankful that she was there!), and the other people who were waiting there.

They were having a total computer glitch, so while I was waiting for them to call my name, I was totally ALL NERVES. The pain of waiting was definitely excruciating, and when they finally called my name (which was at 2:30pm -- an hour and a half was spent waiting for three other people to go ahead of me!), I was ready! I was greeted by a lovely older lady who gave me a paper that listed everything she wanted in that specific order. I gave her my passport, passport photos, deposit slips from Scotiabank birth & police certificates, 156 (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TWO COPIES!), 156K, Affidavit of Support --- and I think that's about it. After that, she told me to sit down... for another hour.

After waiting and waiting (and more waiting), I was finally called up to another window -- this time on the right. I was greeted by this sweet, older asian lady who was SO FRIENDLY, it was amazing. She told me that she would be taking my fingerprints, and to read the sign above the fingerprint sign. After that was all done, I sat down again for about another 15 minutes, and then I was called up... again, by the sweet, older asian lady. She told me that everything was fine, and that my criminal checks went by quickly. She then asked me:
- how I met my fiance
- when did he propose
- what does he do for a living
- do i plan on working in the us (yes, after the US Government allows me to)
- bonafide evidence of our relationship (tons of photos!)

After that, she smiled, and then said the words I had been waiting for since I stepped foot in Vancouver -- APPROVED! She was so happy to tell me that all K1 Visas that day were approved (there were four of us there), and then told me to go to the B window that I went to earlier where the lady would tell me how to get my visa, etc! I happily went over there, and she said that because I'm from Winnipeg, that she would have to mail my visa over to me because it wouldn't be finished until Monday/Tuesday. I didn't have an envelope, so she gave me a paper that had an explanation on where to get an envelope -- and because it was close to 4, I LITERALLY ran all the way to the post office which was across the street past the parkade, down a flight of steps, bought my prepaid envelope ($25), ran back to the Consulate (where the same security welcomed me --- because of my HUGE SMILE), and then back to the lady where she told me what would be happening. I'll be getting my K1 Visa shipped to me via Express Canada Post, and I can't wait!

All in all, it was a good, nerve-wracking, stressful experience -- but I have to say, it was worth it all to be approved! Thanks so much to everyone on here who's helped me on my journey! Now onto heading into the States, and getting married! smile.gif

CanadaHPV Vaccine
After getting married last Tuesday (ohhh, the married life!), I've finally took the next step to actually look & go through what I need to get my AOS sent out. I had my medical exam a few months back (I wrote a review about my experience at Woking Clinic HERE), and only went in with the first HPV shot. To those that filled out the AOS previously before me -- is it required that I get the two other shots? I really (REALLY, REALLY!) don't want to (my shot was pretty traumatic -- I had chills & my arm was numb for a few days) and I'm hoping that I don't have to since I am still 26. What's say you? Is it required?

Let me know... thanks!
supremecomplexFemaleCanada2010-02-02 13:46:00
CanadaOfficially confused.
Since I got the HPV question figured out + civil surgeon appointment set (thanks so much for those who helped me out!), I'm now looking at filling out forms. I did read the facts, but I just want to make sure (like, really, really sure). Some questions:

1) What is considered my "A" number? This question is asked on:

- On G-325A (Biological Information), it's the box where it says: File Number, then has a letter A following it
- On I-693 (Report of Medical Exam), it's the A-Number
- On I-131 (Application for Travel Document), Part 1, Question One: A-Number,

Is that the number on my K-1 Visa that is right under my husband's name? It basically looks something like:

Annotation:
To Marry United States Citizen
(my now-husband's name)
A: 12-345-678

Is that the right number? Or is it the one in red that's further on the right that has a letter & 7 numbers? (ex.J0012345)

Is A the same as Alien Registration Number?
- On Form G-325A, it's the last box
- On I-864 (Affidavit of Support), it's question 6
- On I-765, it's question 10

2) On I-485, Part 3: Processing Information -- what is the Non-Immigrant Visa Number? Is that the number in red, or the number next to A?

3) I had a co-sponsor when my fiance filed for me. Would the co-sponsor need to fill out the Affidavit of Support again? & Would they be required to go to the interview as well?

Any help with this would be SO GREAT. Thanks so much!
supremecomplexFemaleCanada2010-02-02 18:16:00
CanadaHow close/far away are/were you from your American/Canadian significant other?
It was definitely a ways for me to get from Winnipeg, MB, Canada to POrtland, OR, USA. The only flights out of Winnipeg (that go to the US) when I first started flying was either going through Chicago or MInneapolis -- the midwest! It's gotten better, where I could go through Denver (SO MUCH EASIER than Chicago).

CanadaMedical Examine/ Consulate Appointment in Vancouver

How can you get a medical appointment BEFORE you know the date of the consulate appointment? And any advice relating to this?

-- From personal experience, I actually sent both Woking & the Consulate a sort of 'heads-up' e-mail to let them know what dates I was looking at. (Both the medical office along with the Consulate). Since I wanted to have my medical on the Wednesday and then my actual interview on Thursday (the next day), and it went along just fine. Granted, I had given myself about four weeks until the actual day, and they were quite accommodating. (Here are my reviews for both my medical along with my interview.)

*How long will be have to wait for an appointment? As in, when is the soonest we could get one? Do you think its possible to have an appointment before April 17th?

-- If you put ASAP, they may schedule one within a few weeks from now. You never know. It is very possible that they could let you have an appointment on the day that you want -- again, just shoot them over an e-mail. It doesn't hurt. You can even try to schedule your medical/interview to coincide with one another.

*Do they really take into account the proposed wedding date? We are supposed to be getting married May 22, 2010 (a date we picked months ago.) Of course, if the visa isn't appoved by then, we will go ahead and have a ceremony on that date still, and do it legally asap...

-- I'm not too sure if they take account the proposed date, but for them, it's good to know that you have a date to get married - it's definitely more evidence that you two are in fact a couple. Just let them know that at your interview!

*How long do the police certificates take from RCMP? He is in the US right now, but would it be faster to go to Canada to obtain one vs mailing in prints? Can you receive the certificate in just a day?

-- I'm not too sure about this one. Sorry!

Hope that this helps! :)

CanadaWaiting for my Green Card...
I recently had my interview (May 17th) for my AOS and got approved. I informed the person who interviewed me that I would be needing to travel back to Canada for my religious wedding , but he said that the green card would arrive before I leave. At the interview, he asked to give him both my EAD & AP (which I gave) and said that I would be receiving my green card shortly. It's been a few weeks & the green card still hasn't arrived. I'll be leaving on my trip soon to go back to Canada (in less than a week). I booked an InfoPass appointment in a few days and was wondering if at the appointment itself, would they give me a stamp (I-551) and what should I bring to the appointment?

CanadaGoing Back To The US with my Green Card
Well, I've spent a good chunk of almost a month here in Canada, but I'm really ready to go back home to the US. Since I'll be flying with my brand spankin' new Green Card, I have a few questions to ask that some of you may have some answers to.

1) I've booked my ticket with my maiden name, since that's what appears on my passport. When I go through customs & fill out the blue US customs forms, beside the part where it reads "Family Name", do I put it as my maiden name (on my passport) or my married name (on my Green Card)?
2) With my green card & passport, I'll also have my approval for being a US Permanent Resident with my married name on it, along with an official copy of my marriage license as well. Would that be enough?
3) I also have my passport stamped as well, since I thought I wouldn't get my Green Card on time. Do you think that would be a problem? It's good until August 1, 2010, since I told the lady at my InfoPass appointment that I would be staying in Canada for about a month (feels good to be back in Canada... but I miss my home in the US!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

CanadaAOS'rs...
Finally got my green card in the mail today; and, of course, as the stars would have it, right after getting a stamp at my InfoPass appointment yesterday thinking I wasn't going to get it on time for traveling back to Canada in time for my wedding! So glad that I have it now :)

CanadaAOS'rs...
This may be a stupid question, but I was wondering -- since I'm already approved for a Green Card but don't actually HAVE it in hand, would I still be able to travel to Portland to Vegas on a plane using my Canadian passport? I'm not too sure if I'll be getting it yet (I received a notification that it's being produced, but I don't know how long that is going to take) but since I'm only traveling in the US, would it be okay?

CanadaAOS'rs...
Just had my interview today -- got approved! Simple, didn't ask a lot of questions, although we did come over prepared. For those going in for their interviews -- bring your copy of the AOS that you sent in along with originals and anything that you have joint together. Also bring photos! Our officer loved those. And of course, smile, be positive and show that you two love each other... because that's what we did! :)

CanadaAOS'rs...
A little less than a week until my interview (next Monday, May 17th). I'm so nervous, lately all I can ever think about is this interview. We don't have a lot of joint things other than our bank statements and cell phone bill... but other than that, that's about it. We have friends writing us reference letters to bring, along with some photos. I hope these will be enough... it's hard to get stuff done without proper id or anything! (Oregon is tough on getting a license, ID, etc. without a green card.)
