CanadaThe "Where are they?" thread

Hey, I'm the USC and I still hang out in the Canada forum. (OK so yea my fiancee is Canadian) But I would still hang out with you guys even if she wasn't. :)

Yeah, I'm the USC, too, and I'm on here too much for my own good, I think. I'm busy getting things ready for my "wedding" in two weeks.

CanadaUS Dollar Accounts at Canadian Banks
I think that will be one nice thing about being close to the border. I have a feeling I'm going to have to trudge across the bridge once and while whence Kristy is waiting for her AP to deposit or withdraw from her ATM, although I guess we'd have to figure out what would cost more, the toll or the bank fees.

Although, my aunt works at Chase, so when we get to that point, I'll ask her about what her bank can do, and maybe have some other options for the rest of you. The Centura thing seems mostly tailored to the Florida snowbirds.

CanadaGetting permission for son to immigrate from ex-boyfriend
QUOTE (zyggy @ Aug 29 2007, 01:41 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The Consulate needs that permission from the other parent in order to allow them to immigrate...whether you have sole custody or not... because the other parent still has the right to visit and keep a relationship with the child.. you as a custodial parent don't have the right to take that away, but the other parent can give it up...

Then why doesn't the consulate say anything about it in the Packet 3?

I think we're going to have to say screw it and start the plans for me immigrating to Canada, instead. Kristy (and her daughter) are going to be crushed when I tell them that all this waiting has been in vain. Well, I guess we'll see what the court says next Friday.

Why doesn't "Sole Custody" mean sole custody. This is absolutely absurd.

I guess it's because it's the question of "access"? Even though someone has full custody, the other parent still has "access" to the child (unless there's a restraining order or something).

Hopefully you can get it all sorted out in time.

Yeah, I realize that. But, in our case, she's moving three miles away. There's no difference in access, except for the wait on the bridge. And, if he did "access" her more often, like every other weekend like it states in the custody papers, I could understand it. He wouldn't even bother seeing his daughter when he lived on the next street over.

QUOTE (Keisha @ Aug 27 2007, 02:31 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I didn't have any custody papers for my son at all, but I was asked to bring father's notarised consent, stating that the father didn't mind that our son would move with me to the USA permanently and I would have full responsibiity for our son's well-being. That was enough.

Shite. I guess we'll have to get on him to sign and have that paper notarized. This is going to be a pain in the ###. He said he was going to have his lawyer look at it before he signed it, but I doubt he will. He verbally stated that he would sign anything he needed to, but when it came time to, he wouldn't. We can't call him, either, since he doesn't pick up his frigging phone, and only comes by about every 3-6 months to see his daughter, and usually only with about three days warning. On top of that, when she was with him two weekends ago, he told her that she's going to live with him for a month next summer and that she can't say that she misses mommy since this is his time. All this while she's sleeping on the floor of his ex-girlfriend's house with whom he has another child since by the sounds of it he's living at the Y or something. She was so distressed about it.

I'm not going to bring this up to Kristy until after we get back from our honeymoon next week. We were planning on going to the family court place to at least update the custody papers.

Why doesn't "Sole Custody" mean sole custody. This is absolutely absurd.

CanadaGetting permission for son to immigrate from ex-boyfriend
I'm struggling with the same thing, and it's not really clear what is needed. I'm under the assumption that since my fiancee's ex agreed to let my future step-daughter have a passport, that would be all that is needed. I drew up a document for the ex to sign last weekend, but he wouldn't because he "didn't like the wording." Which means, since he's more or less illiterate, he didn't understand what "Consent to Immigrate" meant. We are probably going to meet with family court next week and just make sure my fiancee has up-to-date custody agreement papers and such.

Here's what the form that my fiancee's ex wouldn't sign. Maybe your ex will, and it would probably be better notarized. Also, it may not help to have a letter like this, but it couldn't hurt, either.

Well, I'm not much help. I'd just have to hook up an aerial to my TV in order to get CBC. I do get Global with Comcast, though, so I could watch Heroes a day early and LOST an hour earlier.

Just wanted to chime in here, that Kristy and I received our NEXUS approval forms this past week. We sent ours out the same day we sent back the Packet 3.

Wow, I imagined it would take a month, at tops. I sent International Money Orders for the fees, instead of paying CDN$80 on a credit card, figured I'd save nearly $50 with the exchange the way it is now. They seem to be advertising it more and more right now, too. "Get a NEXUS, it's cheaper and faster than a passport," is more or less what it says on the brochure.

Charge on card was $47.51 on 7/11

Interesting. My form said that credit cards would be billed at the Canadian rate. The rates listed on the form were CDN$80 or US$50. Ah, well. I sent mine on the same day we sent Packet 3, so my counter in my sig also indicates how long I've been waiting for NEXUS.

Yeah, so I guess I've left a lot of stuff hanging!

I ended up getting my groomsmen a drinking game / shot glass set thing-a-ma-bobber from Green Earth. And, I can keep the wires off of my jaw!!! It's started healing in the middle and now is just fractured on the top and bottom, so I just need to continue with my soft-diet.

Also, I have some other news, but I think I'll leave that for a new topic...

The boyfriend of the groom, however, was not as lucky. He tried to cross on Saturday night, and was detained by either customs or immigration (not sure which at this point) for two and a half hours and then turned around. When he was asked where he was going, he replied "a wedding" and then when asked whose, he replied "I dunno, but my girlfriend's in it and there already." Apparently he sounded suspicious, but that was also the first time he ever tried to cross, too, so I'd imagine he was a bit nervous, too.

OK, I finally reread this, and it was not the "boyfriend of the groom" it was the "boyfriend of the maid of honor."

I'm now back from the honeymoon, and just got the wedding pictures on CD, so I'll probably get some posted online sometime soon.

Sorry for the confusion in my initial post. No, we weren't getting legally married, hence "wedding" in quotes and the (aka $10K party) in my signature. But, my fiancee crossed the border with no problem, as she was more or less interrupted by the CBP officer with asking how everyone in the car was related. The boyfriend of the groom, however, was not as lucky. He tried to cross on Saturday night, and was detained by either customs or immigration (not sure which at this point) for two and a half hours and then turned around. When he was asked where he was going, he replied "a wedding" and then when asked whose, he replied "I dunno, but my girlfriend's in it and there already." My fiancee has been worrying about what she'll say at the border tomorrow when she heads over for our "wedding" on Saturday. She'll be driving and will have her daughter, her two bridesmaids, and her mother with her. The others are staying until Saturday evening, and Kristy is staying until next Thursday. What should she say at the border while still telling the truth, but not giving the impression to the officer that she's getting married and is planning on staying?

The questions are usually:

Citizenship?

Where are you going?

How long are you going to be?

Any tobacco or alcohol?

CanadaBordertowners UNITE!
It depends on your particular border, but with the backups happening at Port Huron, to which they are responding "we haven't changed any procedures, we don't know why it's slowed down" I'm sure it will save me. I figure, for $50 over the next five years, even cutting the lines just on holidays and such when we visit the other half, the NEXUS card will be worth it.
Jeremy + KristyMaleCanada2007-09-10 11:27:00
CanadaBordertowners UNITE!

We both had NEXUS cards, so that made crossing the border very easy because no one ever asked any questions. If you're going to cross over frequently and your land border supports it, I strongly suggest that you get one.

Yeah, maybe we should, anyway. Just, for us, anyway, the majority of the time it seems, the US side NEXUS lane isn't even open. But, $100 for the both of us for 5 years, let us get by easier on holidays and such when there is backups, probably is worth it.

CanadaBordertowners UNITE!
Just wondering who some of the other Bordertowners here are. We have some different issues I believe than others. For instance, what did you submit for proof of evidence of meeting your fiancé(e)? How easy, or hard, has/had it been crossing so frequently? How many rolls of toll tokens do you go through in a week (thinking mainly of river crossings)? Just getting the ball rolling.

So, myself, Doug n Amanda, neiks, and vnoe are some that I know of. Any others?

CanadaHow reliable is Canada Post's tracking system?

Well, I have several theories about this delay now...

a. Montreal hates me.

b. Canada Post hates me.

c. They both hate me and have made a pact to torture me.

d. I have lost my frickin' mind!

I'm trying to keep my cool, but seriously! If it was issued yesterday, why haven't they mailed it... and if it has been mailed, why isn't it showing up on the tracking?

I've had to reschedule both of my exams this week b/c I couldn't take the stress of having to get there at last minute!

I feel bad complaining when I know people are still waiting for their interviews, but it makes me feel a bit better - I just want it to be over! :)

ETA: there is also the possibility that Michael wrote down the tracking number wrong, in which case he won't even need a green card because I will leave him here (jk).

Don't bother with a transfer now. It takes a week or more for Montreal to transfer the case and then about a month for your interview. If you tried to transfer now, your interview date would probably be after your scheduled date in Montreal.

upon recept of packet 3... you mail back your checklist indicating that you have completed all the forms, including 1-134. However, given the blazing speed at montrial... allot has changed since i filled that out.

i've changed jobs, which also renders my letter from employer obsolete... have my 2006 tax returns now, etc etc...

Should i fill out new copies of everything before the interview? or do they actually want the stuff from 6 months ago? I suppose the safe answer is to do both, and have both copies handy....
