CanadaFood stuff at POE
At home I could list off what is and isn't allowed based on the NEXUS information I received. There's some restrictions on blueberries and some other things, too, but that might be going to Canada. Basically, no beef or citrus. Any prepackaged foodstuffs I'd doubt you'd have a problem with, unless they contain beef. Other fruits or vegetables you better declare, but as long as they are grown in the US or Canada you should be alright.

yeah, I was wondering, with you guys being so far on the other side of Ontario, if yours would take an extra day. Glad to see you moved up your travelling plans though. I am sure you will have your visa tomorrow smile.gif

Will you be taking the Ambassador Bridge? Keep us posted with a review, I'm headed that way too haha.

No, the Bluewater Bridge. I live just on the one side and she on the other. Seven miles by road; three miles as the crow flies.

Jeremy and Kristy, any word on yours yet?

Doesn't look like it's coming today. But, we are moving up our plans and plan on moving on Monday instead of Tuesday. Even have the caravan all planned out. My grandparents are going to rent the UHaul since I'll be in Canada packing. They will leave their car at my house. I'll drive the UHaul back behind Kristy and her daughter in her car. And my grandparents will drive my car from Canada to the States. Hopefully the CBP won't have a problem with that.

haha, I know, I just can't help but wonder. I haven't even booked a moving truck or resigned yet, because I just want to be a hundred percent sure that the interviewing officer didn't change his mind after telling me that everything looked to be in order. For everyone who have plans to wed or move a week after their interview, I don't know how you do it. The stress would kill me surely!!

I can't believe I have to wait till tomorrow... crying.gif hahah

I doubt you'll actually have to wait until tomorrow. Stop by the post office after work with your delivery notice and it will probably be there.

CanadaApplied for our marriage license today
So, I stopped by the county clerk's office this morning on my way in to work to apply for the marriage license. Brought in my birth certificate and Kristy's birth certificate. The clerk had me take an oath that I would tell her the truth, copied the information from the birth certificates to a form, asked how old I was and how old Kristy was, and whether either of us had been married before, had me sign it and give my SSN, gave her twenty dollars, and I can pick up the license on Tuesday. So, anyone getting married in Michigan, the three "day" waiting period is business days, not calendar days.

Shouldn't be an issue. I bought our Wii in Canada and brought it to my house in the US without a hitch. I don't recall if I declared it or not, though, as I don't think we were planning on leaving it in the States at the time.

Hey Jeremy and Kristy,

I am sorry that your visa has not come today sad.gif

If you have the tracking, you can call Canada Post, and ask them what is going on. Have you already tried this?

It's weird that the last update was that it was put in the post on Wednesday, and you haven't heard anything since.

Please keep us posted. All my fingers and toes are crossed for you guys.

The tracking number is sitting on my desk at home. I was hoping it was still in my History on my home computer and could retrieve it via Remote Desktop, but it wasn't. I think we will wait around and twiddle our thumbs on Monday waiting for the post man, and if it comes, then scurry to find a truck and move in the afternoon instead of in the morning.

CanadaVisa didn't come today
So, the XpressPost wasn't very "Express" and didn't arrive at Kristy's today. It was accepted at the Montreal Post Office on Wednesday morning. My thoughts are if it doesn't come on Monday while we're packing up the truck, it's not coming on Tuesday or in the foreseeable future and is lost in the mail somewhere.

Any of you guys think we should still plan on the Monday move? Could we go to the Post Office in Sarnia this afternoon and see if it's there? Maybe it got to Sarnia just after the mailman picked up today's mail for delivery.

CanadaAre the children's biological father a US citizen????????
Are you going through Vancouver or Montreal? I don't recall that on our cover letter from Montreal. N/A would be fine though, I would imagine, since it doesn't apply based on your previous answer. I guess they just want to make sure their not making their work harder for the sons/daughters if they are already a US citizen they don't need a visa. It seems like some people are confused about that or overlook it.

CanadaU.S. tightens screening of Canadians with visas
Well, I don't think it changes much. The DoS already has the ten finger scanner, so why not at the border itself, too. When I first got my NEXUS card, it was two fingers, but when I went back a week later, I then had all ten taken because they just got the new scanner in that day. So, the Bluewater Bridges have it at the NEXUS office, but not down at secondary inspection, yet.

CanadaConsulate will have Our Case in 2 weeks

i wish you the best!! what happened to you wasnt fair at all, hope they open their friggin eyes!

Anyone have a quick synopsis for me to catch up? Who's helping your case, Levin or Stabenow?

Senator Levin is actually helping, and he already helped push the I-212 through after over 10 months of waiting :)

My wife had her interview on April 5, 2007, and the lady who "interviewed" us totally misinterpreted the law, and while doing so was pretty much the nastiest person I've ever come into contact with. We've had a lawyer throughout this entire process, and right after I had a meeting with him and was told that she was 100% false. We had my lawyer and Senator Levin send in inquiries and a packet disproving what she claimed on Friday, and we've already touched base with them. Within a week or two we should hear back, and hopefully it will just be to mail in the passport and wait for the Visa :)

I just read up on what happened to you. Terrible. Senator Levin is a nice guy; I hope his office can help you, especially since he's been a Senator for so long. So many times, it seems like they want all kinds of information and documentation, but then can't be arsed to actually look at it. Even CIBP is that way.

CanadaAPPROVED IN MONTREAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm leaving on Friday to pick him up... if the visa arrives in the mail on Friday, we will leave on Sunday... if it arrives on Monday, we will leave on Monday. I'm hoping it comes by Monday at the latest, otherwise I may have to bring down the stuff and have him fly down a day or two later.

We went against the consensus of not preparing to leave until you are sure you are approved, his last day of work was last Friday, so he is ready to go!!

It's kind of surreal at this point, we bought a house this week, we're trying to sell our current house, Michael has been approved, and my last day of classes probably EVER is tomorrow! Craziness, but in a good way :)

In order for his "stuff" to be brought in duty free, they must accompany or follow him, they can't get here before he does. If it follows, there's extra paperwork, too, I believe.

CanadaHow do I plan a wedding from up here?
Oh, and I've heard other people touting Michael's and their 40% coupons and such, I don't have a Michael's close to where I live, but we do have a Hobby Lobby, and they are great, too. My fiancee and I stopped in there a week and a half ago, just looking for ideas for centerpieces, well, they were having a sale for 50% off everything we needed to create our centerpieces; glass bowls, vase rocks, mirrored plates, ribbon, and floating candles. So, instead of just looking, we bought, and all told each centerpiece cost us only $3.70.

CanadaHow do I plan a wedding from up here?

I assume the USA citizen is the "guy" I would just leave it in his trusty hands!! What could go wrong?

Hey now. I'm actually looking at the wedding planning stuff more than my fiancee it seems, some times. We are pretty much in the same boat as you are, and we found a site that we loved (although quite expensive) and usually booked a good two years in advance, but we got it for this September 1st. So, we are getting "married" that day whether we have the visa or not (more than likely not, but I still have my fingers crossed). We found a minister online that will perform a non legally binding wedding and for another $25 he will even perform a very small (us and two witnesses) second legally binding cermony at a later time. He said that he's done actually done that before for other K1 visa applicants.

CanadaWhy did you choose the US?
Well, the weather was not an issue for her moving to the States, seeing as we live 7.5 miles away from each other, and she's actually a bit south of me.
Jeremy + KristyMaleCanada2007-06-05 12:02:00
CanadaWhy did you choose the US?
For us, we had thought about both moving to Windsor (across from Detroit), as it would actually make it easier for me to commute to my job in Detroit (I live in Port Huron, so my commute every day is about 70 miles). Then, as we were house hunting, we realized it would be easier for her to move to Port Huron with me, as the housing market in my area right now is very bad, and I wouldn't be able to sell my house, whereas her house will probably sell in a week.

Very interesting to read the replies to this question! As for us, well, me being the American living in Detroit, and him as the Canadian truck driver who crosses the border regularly, we could have lived in either country! It's strange being so close to each other, the border, yet having to go thru ALL the red tape to be together!

We decided opportunities were better in the USA for both of us.....it's not like he's leaving his family behind, they're an hour away by car, lol....given the Montreal timing :crying: it looks like we'll be getting married sometime in November...keep yer fingers crossed (L) (F)

Retirement is another story.....we will most certainly retire in his family home in Kingsville, Ontario (1 mile from the Lake...mmmm)

Me, you, vnoe, and neiks ought to start a bordertown club.

I have heard that the people on the phone at Montreal aren't very pleasant to deal with....

but when you go for the interview they are all very nice... maybe not super friendly but nice.. the guy who I had the interview with was great...... I think this is the same guy everyone is talking about  He just asked me a few questions ... and I was on my way...

The person that interviewed me was fine as well -- professional and efficient. I was out of the interview in 10, 15 mins? Maybe they have new staff now or something *shrug*

Unless she was hearing the stories of the security staff there and not the COs and was getting them confused. From the reviews on here I've read, once you get inside, everyone is very nice and pleasant.

CanadaName change questions

At least for me my passport expires next year, but with the current regulations and delays, it'll take forever and a day for it to be renewed. *sigh*

Doesn't help you, but it may help friends and family that need to renew their passport in order to visit you.

From: http://www.ppt.gc.ca.../20070608c.aspx

June 8, 2007
Simplified Passport Renewal Program

The Simplified Passport Renewal Program will be available as of August 15, 2007, and is part of a broader effort to modernize Canadian passport services.

It will allow Canadian citizens who meet certain eligibility criteria to renew their passport using a shorter form and without submitting documentary evidence of citizenship, supplementary identification and a guarantor declaration. Under the renewal program, passport applicants will only be required to submit the shorter form along with two new photos, the application fee and their last passport.

Canadians who meet the following eligibility criteria will be able to benefit from this program:

* They must be residing in Canada at the time they apply.
* They must have resided in Canada at the time of their previous application.
* They were 16 years old or over at the time of their previous application.
* Their previous passport:
o Must have been valid for five years,
o Must have been issued after January 31, 2002,
o Was never damaged or reported as lost or stolen, and
o Must have been issued under their current name.

This program will yield benefits to both passport applicants and Passport Canada. Applicants will save time and will not have to surrender important documents such as their birth certificates or citizenship cards for an extended period of time. Passport Canada's productivity will increase, as fewer steps will be required for the entitlement and screening of each file. Renewal applications are still subject to all current security verifications.

The new Simplified Passport Renewal Program application form will be available at all Passport Canada service points and through Passport Canada's Web site, and it will be accepted at all of Passport Canada offices, through receiving agents and by mail.

Nope, not just you. I've crossed the border at least 200 times in the 9 months, nary a stamp in sight. Even on my previous passport when I travelled to Germany I hadn't gotten a stamp. I have one lonely stamp in my passport right now from Heathrow, which isn't even legible.

CanadaMarrying a Canadian citizen in canada......
http://www.cic.gc.ca...nsor/spouse.asp For info on immigrating to Canada as a spouse.

You are only allowed six months as a visitor in any twelve month span. You may have to move back to the States and await processing there. I believe I have heard that it takes LESS time to sponsor someone outside of the Canada than within. Your best bet would be to consult an immigration attorney, since you'd more than likely be "out-of-status" before the application has finished.

CanadaCanadian K2

Im pretty sure, if im understanding your situation correctly... You'll need to clear that up with the Canadian Gov. But, if the paperwork says she has sole custady, you may not have much of an issue (other than working out the visitation issue)

Also, im not too sure you really need to go down the road of a formal "adoption", the child should be able to enter under your fiancee's application.

Mind you, this is only my humble un-educated opinion, but I think that all you'll need to do, is come to some form of an agreement with... whatever the canadiian equivilent of "Freind of the Court" is... to either waive the visitation for a year, or clairify that he would need to come to the states to visit. Rest of it should not really be a problem for you (after you manage to get the passport at least)

Yeah, I'm assuming that there won't be a problem once she is able to get her passport. I mean, that's just what the K2 is for, other than K1 widows or widowers. It was even hard getting my future step-daughter's long form BC, since the father had checked the little box that said that they don't agree on the last name. So, unbeknownst to my fiancée, her daughter's last name has legally been hyphenated.

And, the adoption thing wouldn't be until down the road when we are married and such, anyway. Just a little frustrated, and would rather not have anything like this crop up in the future, since I know the BF won't be around.
Jeremy + KristyMaleCanada2007-06-25 14:24:00
CanadaCanadian K2
We keep hitting snags with my fiancée's daughter's application and preparing documents. So that I'm better armed for anything else upcoming, what should I do before the interview?

1. Does the original court order need to be changed? It says that Kristy has sole custody, and her ex-boyfriend (the biological father) has visitation every other weekend. However, the BF has never visited his daughter regularly like that. It's been probably four months or so that the BF has even seen his daughter, and he maybe talks to her on the phone once a month. How does one file to have the court order changed? If we don't change it, we have the issue of "denying access" to his daughter because of Advance Parole issues, don't we? How should that be worded in the court order?

2. In another thread, it was mentioned that a sworn statement from the BF is needed at the consulate, giving permission from the BF to allow the immigration. How does one go about getting something notarized in Canada? They don't just have a notary public at your bank like most banks here in the US do.

3. Won't happen until after Kristy and I are married, but what government would we be dealing with when try to get the BF to drop parental rights and have me do a step-parent adoption?

Those are just some of the things floating around in my head right now. If I'm missing anything else, please let me know.

Thanks,

Jeremy
