Russia, Ukraine and BelarusNeed Advice - Fiancee in Crimea

You can't take anything that Zhirinovsky says seriously. He's their main clown in parliament. Everything he says is ridiculous and I think the only reason they keep him is so that they can have some fun in politics. I have yet to hear anything remotely normal come out of his mouth.

He's been around a while and in Putin's circle. Clown or not, he spreads his own form of propoganda that some will lsten too. Just like reading Pravda - it's the antithesis to what we read here.

Oh from Russia. I never really know how serious to take guys like this, just like I don't take guys like John McCain that seriously. Looks like a lot of them never made it out of the cold war. Still it's disconcerting that there are people out there who think like that.

I originally thought you meant someone from Crimea did that.

Read this link and then scroll down where it talks about Reshat Ametov,. They already are segregating Crimea. http://www.rferl.org...g/25306118.html

My In Laws are currently about 90 miles from where the troops are, and they are not letting anyone go to Crimea unless you have a Crimean passport and or Russian passport. Even with the Crimean passport, they want you to convert to Russian. And what ever she does, don't say anything about the referendum and that it's not legit etc. Look what happened to one of the Senators that spoke out and sent a few letters to Poland, Hungary, Romania etc. Not good.

You also mention you porposed in 2012. Have you been back there since so you are keeping current of your 2 year requirement?

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusTravel to Kharkiv, Kharkiv, Ukraine

You might want to llok at LOT (Polish) airlines as another option. They are pretty cheap and you change planes in Warsaw. That being said, I took LOT my first trip 10 years ago, and my wie took LOT last year to see her family. Both lights were late leaving Chicago and we missed the plane in Warsaw to Kiev - but they do put you up in the Hilton at the airport in Poland. Sucks that you lose a day. Not sure if the schedule and departures are more on time out of JFK, but might want to look into it.

And like the other post had, remove all tags. I used to take like a portable CD player as a gift. So I would remove the CD player and put them in my carry-on, and the carefully opened package in my checlk-in luggage, so I could re-package. And bringing in a diamond ring is a likely duty item they will notice. I brought a tennis bracelet once and got hit with duties. A friend of mine who went a couple years later had a receipt he did on Photoshop showing it was a cubic zirconia and only $35.00. Not advocating trying to fool thier Customs Agents, but the last thing you want to do is get detained over a gift/ring. I ended up buying an engagement type ring and matching wedding bands in Ukraine. Granted the engagement ring is a lot different looking there, since they really don't use them, but it was cool & symbolic of her country that we bought the rings there and been wearing them almost 10 years now.

All the documents we needed and friends of ours required, we scanned as a color PDF file and printed here for submission to the various agencies. Then on the next trip there, secured and kept the originals.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusSending flowers/gifts to Russia

I used Russian Florist's Network (florist.ru) many times between 2005 and 2009. Mostly flowers, but also some gift baskets.

It was cheaper than comparable US prices, and quality was very good. Never had any problems.

I used the same service a few years back - and had a cake (albeit small), delivered to my FIL for his birthday. Was a nice surprise and they said tasty too. Reasonable price and on time service too.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusInterview In Kyiv This Morning & Strange Request

While it's been a while, we had an issue with my wife's birthday. Her birth certificate says 3/2 and her Ukraine passports and all my paperwork say 3/3. So while we passed the interview, the Visa/Passport was not at FedEx that evening. Back and forth a few times with the Consulate to find out why, since at the time we had no clue, several expensive palne ticket changes & apartments and 3 days later finally got the passport/Visas. Turns out because of this anomaly, they had to go back to the state Dept in the US & NSCIS to see if an Iryna M... born 3/2 ever had a K-1, overstay etc. Once it came back as No, it was approved.

There was a similar situation w/ a young girl who was turned away before us. Her dates of employment in Russia didn't match her passport stamps and/or date of issue. She had to go home and provide proof to support the dates and make corrections. Perhaps one of these reasons is why she was asked to provide additional info.

MikeAndIrynaMaleUkraine2014-03-18 13:03:00
Russia, Ukraine and BelarusDelay after interview

As info, we had a similar problem getting the Passport many moons ago. When my wife was born, the Dr was hammered (surprise) and the date he wrote on the Birth Cert was different than what was filed at the Oblast Registry by 1 day. No one noticed it (including me) until after the Interview. So the Embassy had to go back to the State Dept, ICE etc. to see if an Iryna Maidenname ever had a Visa over stay, K-1 filed before etc. Took an additional 3 days to get word back.  I was there and we had to change plane flights 3 times, rent an apt 3 additional days and way to much time over thinking what the delay was etc. so we went to the Embassy (afterr calling twice) to see what was the delay, they explained the birthday issue, got Passports that night, left the following AM.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusInterview language in Kyiv

Thank you everyone! ?????

As info for others in the future, I was at the Embassy Interviewe w/ my now wife & daughter. Because I was there, they did pull me up to the window and ask me a few questions, just to alidate the petition. No big deal, but if you plan on attending, you might get asked questions as well.

They had a copy of the petition when we got there, came from the NVC after USCIS was done with it. They complete their portion, probably make a copy and send it back to USCIS for follow-up. Not exactly sure what that process is.

My fiance' had a copy of the petition as well, along with all the docs you mentioned and a current set of the financials she surrendered to the Consulate. Fortunatly I had spare pictures of them both, because she only brought one of each of them, and they require two. That would have been a pain to get booted and reschedule because we lacked a couple of pictures for the Visas.

They probably spent a whopping 10 seconds on the financials. While I did have the original form, the 3 years worth of taxes were copies. I did not enclose any other financial backup (ie insurance, 401k, whatever) since I was over the guideline requirements. Every other document we used were copies as well, but we did bring some original photos, of course her original passport, sealed medical envelope but copies of the NOA2, petition etc.

During the interview, they brought up my (step) daughter who was 11 at the time and asked her questions. Not normal, but I'm sure they did to take advantage of her being there, me being there, etc.

Well there are two areas inside the Consulate people go for Visas. The first area inside the double set of glass doors is the general visa area for tourist visas etc. It's also where you pick up your FedEx waybill, should you decide to pick it up the same day, etc. These people tend to be short fused because of the sheer # of people that are there at any time (25-35 when I was there).

Down the hall, take a left and proceed to the end is the K Visa area. When we were there, there were 4 other people as well. Even if you go with your fiance', they don't call you up together, she goes first (and foremost) and if you are there, they may ask you some questions. I thought the people to be very professional, but not rude at all. You check in at the main window, they verify your papers, appt. do you have photos etc. then you sit & wait until your name is called. You then proceed to one of two windows where they are on one side of the glass and the fiance' on the other. They look thru the papers, ask questions and just try to validate it is a true and bonafide relationship.

Due to some paperwork glitch, we had to go back to the Embassy a couple of times, but I thought the people we dealt with were great.

Congrats on your approval!! I was with my fiance' (now wife) at the time of the interview - it wasn't as bad as WE think, but so many times THEY are used to bribery to get things accomplished - not very democratic. Assuring them it's all on the up and up may settle their nerves. The questions are pretty straightforward, they are just trying to make sure it is a bonafide relationship. The actual maze at the Embassy can rattle most people, knowing where to go, all the other people in line, the two people at a time etc. is intimidating. For those of you still waiting for the interview, and it's not easy to do, is try to get them to relax, be prepared and be honest. Easier said than done, however.

Ok, so I understand that you can specify that you will pick up the passport from the office. It's ready in like 2-3 business days. Does anyone know HOW LONG they will hold it for? Like, can we pick up in a week?

Not sure about that. I think it is a FedEx policy matter. Maybe check with FedEx

Granted it's been a while for us, but when we were given her receipt after the interview, as you leave the Consulate main building, there was a man sitting at a desk in the general visa area just inside the double glass dorrs. He was the FedEx rep if you will foir the Consulate. We paid him something like $8.00 and were given a FedEx waybill that we took to the FedEx office that evening, showed the gaurd and was allowed in. There was like 30 people waiting as well and they call the names out one by one.

Or if you are self employed, then you need to have copies of your tax return to verify income. In most cases, at the interview, you will have to show more completed financial information, to include tax returns.

I got a statement from the bank and they stamp it and signed and attached a biz card - that was it. Beleive they are more concerned about the income level verified by the tax returns than the bank account. good luck

US Citizenship General DiscussionChanges in Interview Location

The problem that not all the offices conduct interviews, for example, my office in Cincinnati is in a federal building that also have the other room for interviews (ROC, CITIZENSHIP ETC ), I guess the reason you were scheduled 55 miles away is that this is their office for interviews, IF and only IF this is the case, nothing can be done, you will need to get your self there some how.
Wait and see once they send you back

We have the same issue as No_where_man. The office where we do biometrics, updates etc. is 5 miles away, but for the Citizenship interview, we have to go to the Federal building in DT Chicago. Maybe see if you can schedule an info pass meeting, bring up your pregnancy (if it isn't already obvious) and see if they can re-schedule or give you an alternative. Couldn't hurt.

US Citizenship General DiscussionClasses or Self Study

My wife begins citizenship class next week at local Jr. College. She is not happy with her English but I believe she has nothing to lose. It is free after all.

But as for her ESL studies, she claims that she can do better at home. She knows the language rules very well and many students in her class are close to illiterate even in their own language so some of it seems like a waste of time for her. She is very dilligent at finding and studing English on line. It will be about level 4 for her.

So should she also study for citizenship test at home and on line ? To confuse things more, this year the gov't. has new rule that no enrollement in citizenship classes unles you are enrolled in ESL at the same time.

My wife took ESL classes at a local church out here is the Chicago suburbs. In her words, there were a lot of Spanish people in the class (only 1 Russian woman, and her the lone Ukranian) so a lot of the conversation to teach was done in Spanish. Now it did help her some, from a noun, verb & sentence structure standpoint. But she will tell you the biggest thing that taught her English, sub-titles on the TV. We have a 24 disc English set (Russian & English) and once she got to like CD 3 and the phrase was "I have a dog, but not a cat", that did it for her and she stopped the CD's (anyone want to buy a hardly used CD set?). Wasn't practical in the applications. Watching movies where she knew the plot & conversation, but heard and read it in English made it much easier than discs or ESL.

For her citizenship test, she had it on her Ipod to listen at work, the online tests and the written questions & study material. For her, the Ipod & written Q & A worked best and she went 6 for 6 in her interview question response. BUT, everyone learns a different way. Some people are visual, others require sound and others want to write so whatever seems to be the easiest form for your wife, support her on it and go with it.

Congrats and way to go!!

We know how you feel. My wife should have her ceremony next week and we will be done and her a proud citizen. My buddy just got his NOA2 yesterday for his fiance' (friend of my wife). But they have only completed 3 of the 28 steps the rest of us have. Don't envy him, but glad for you and my wife.

Enjoy this special moment & day as a Citizen.

US Citizenship General DiscussionAPRIL 2012 FILERS N-400

Hubbys interview is finally here!! 9AM tomorrow at the Federal Building downtown. Will post results after were done!!

CONGRATS!! If you want to get a good seat with the kids, might want to get there a little early and sit in the middle section, closest to front. They take the petitioners first a couple of rows at a time, then their family members a couple of rows at a time. I was toward the back, but stood up for the ceremony so I could videotape it. Good luck, and enjoy your ceremony.

US Citizenship General DiscussionAPRIL 2012 FILERS N-400

My lovely wife had her interview today and passed with flying colors. Since everyone has always been helpful over the years and it seems like us VJ'ers never can have enough info, here is what she experienced at the Chicago office this morning.

Appointment time was 9:45, we got there at 8:30. Form said to go to the 3rd floor, we did and checked in, then were told to go to the 2nd floor and sit by Door #1. Not sure why there are two areas, but where they tell us to go, we go. At 10 AM the nice man called out my wife's name, asked her for her invite letter and off they went. 10 minutes later, she came out with a smile on her face, she had passed. We had taken all of the documents that were requested on the invite letter, original marital documents, divorce papers, birth certificates, translations, you name it. She was not asked for any of that. He only wanted to see her original Ukraine passport w/ the K-1, my passport and her green card. He then told her "I am going to ask you 10 questions, you need to get 6 correct in order to pass". Iryna has been studying and knew them well, and went 6 for 6. He told her she had passed and did not ask any more questions. He then asked her to read one sentence, which she did, then write a sentence, she also did that with no problem. He then asked her what was her birth date (to confirm I guess), that she was indeed divorced before - of course, and would she like her name changed (assuming more Americanized) to which she replied no. He printed out the N-652 naturalization Interview results form stating "Congrats", he shook her hand and told her she would be receiving a letter for her Oath ceremony in 2 weeks. In her opinion, very easy, very polite but man was she glad it was over and done with.

One note, be ON TIME. One couple showed up 5 minutes late, they met their adjudicator and was told they had to wait until the next available opening where someone missed their appointment - so always be early. That was at 9:05 AM, at 10:15 they were still waiting. A couple of other people walked out and did not look very happy, and I overheard one adjudicator tell a family member "she needs to study a little more, then can retake the test". I think the unhappy ones fell into this category.

For those of you VJ'ers who want to know every step, the questions Iryna was asked were:
* Who wore the declaration of Independence? (her reply was Jefferson, the adjudicator asked for the first name as well which she replied Thomas - she forgets everybody's name, glad she remembered this time)
* What is the political party of the President now?
* What are the two major political parties of the United States
* What is one promise you make when you become a U.S. citizen?
* Name one branch of the Government.

Question she had to read: What are two rights of the Declaration of Independence? Question she had to write: Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived?

Hope this help sooth some nerves for everyone. Just be on time, and study. The people at the Chicago office couldn't have been any nicer and the process was pretty easy overall. Granted it seems like it took forever, but like so many others, it was worth every step. Glad we are DONE!!! And when we have our Oath letter, we'll update the timeline so it doesn't skew the data.

Here's a new twist I'd like to share. So Iryna was approved last week Thursday in Chicago (see above details). We thought we'd get a letter this week and her Oath Ceremony would be in two weeks. She gets a telephone call from USCIS on Monday, asking her if she could come in Tuesday for her Oath Ceremony. Of course I was out of town for business, so we had to pass up this opportunity, which the USCIS contact said was OK, just wait for the letter then. Never heard before of the phone call for an Oath Ceremony, but it looks like it can happen!!

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaK1/K2 Process in US Embassy Bogota, Colombia

Hi is there any one that has been approved for a K1/K2 visa in Bogota, Colombia?  It looks like the US Embassy in Bogota has updated their website and no longer provide the required DS forms on their site.  Do they now send them package 3/4 to the beneficiary through DHL (like passport) or would I the petitioner also receive an email with the forms or package3/4 ?

Also the beneficiary is located in Barranquilla which means she would have to fly to Bogota for the medical and interview,  once approved how far in advance can she start with the medical requirements with the panel physician in Bogota.

HI...Hoping someone can help me out here....I just received my approval (NOA2) from USCIS for my fiancee in barranquilla.......we starting to look at the documents that are required to take to the US Embassy in Bogota,  The police certificate, the National Police has an online search that has the wording in present tense but does not says anything about having a clean past criminal history.  Is this what's being accepted in the US Embassy as the police certificate?

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaALMOST NO SEAT TO FLY COLOMBIA TO USA ... AIRLINE almost FULL

I just came back from Colombia last week....I flew Avianca.  The problem with the pilots seems to be only affecting the domestic operations of the airline as my flights from Bogota to Barranquilla and back were delayed over 3 - 4 hours. Pretty much all the flights within Colombia were delayed.  My flights from New York to Bogota and back were all on-time and didn't see any issues in the international terminal in Bogota on other international flights

Gracias Bedoyita.

Te has casado alguna ves?

tu fiance se ha casado?

tienen hijos entre los 2?

tienen hijos aparte?

donde vive el?

has sido arrestada alguna ves?

has ido a los estados unidos alguna ves?

has ido de ilegal?
