We just sent our package yesterday. We've been ready since early November, but some unexpected financial emergencies kept us from being able to mail it in till now. Still well within the deadline, but a stressful wait nonetheless.

Included as evidence:
- Tax return for 2010 (filed jointly).
- Bank statements for joint account (random months for the past year).
- Insurance cards and a copy of a service summary showing me as policy holder and my wife as beneficiary.
- Mail, bills, pay stubs and receipts showing our names and address.
- Leases for every place we've lived in (three in all, not counting her parents' place, as we were subletting it and didn't have a formal lease).
- A few pictures taken throughout our time together, in various places (New England, West Virginia, Pennsylvania...) Would have sent more, but Ashley vetoed any pics she didn't like herself in :P "But babe, the more evidence the better!" "We'll be fine, I'm not letting anyone see THAT picture".
- Affidavits from three people.

US Citizenship General DiscussionGetting ready to apply for Citizenship
Hello everyone,

My wife and I are preparing her application for citizenship. She meets the requirements of being married to a US Citizens and being a Permanent Resident for at least 3 years. She has a 10 year old son from a previous marriage that occured when she lived in her original place of birth. Both are Permanent Residents of the US. We have filled in the application, have copies of all the required documents, and are getting ready to mail in.

I understand that her son will become a US Citizen when she does. My questions are, do I need to submit anything to prove their relationship? Does he rquire a fee also or is it just 1 fee for both?

Any helpful info you can think of would be greatly appreciated.

About how long does this process usually take?

US Citizenship General DiscussionMinor Child Passport
My wife has her Citizenship interview next week. She has a 10 year old son from her previous marriage. He is living in the United States with us. His father is living somewhere in Vietnam. When my wife and her son become citizens I would like to get them both Passports. I noticed that one of the requirements for a minor child to obtain a US Passport is for both parents to be present when submitting the application. If one can't be present then they can fill out a form for consent. We are not sure if we will be able to locate his father to get this form filled out. Is this required even if his father consented to him coming here to live with us? I thought that pretty much gave up his rights.

Anyone familiar with this process?

I am in this same situation, except she has not gone to court for her son to come here. Her ex sees her son very rarely, and when he does, he usually drops him off at his parents home. Her and her parents have discussed this with him, but he won't sign. Her parents invited his parents over and they discussed this issue and they thought it was wonderful for her son to go with her, because he would have a better life with his mom. Her ex is still not convinced of signing. I talked to her about a plan to let her son live with her ex for 1 or 2 weeks, without any help from her or her parents, so he can understand that he cannot take care of him, because he doesn't have the time or care to do so. I will hope this experience will change his mind. If not, how would she begin the process of going to court to allow her son to come with her to the US, she is from Vietnam?

Thanks Merp for your help. I know exactly the seal that you are talking about, it is a notary seal. On the Example affidavit form on VJ that is to be placed in the bottom left corner. THe location I am describing is a different location. I may have to just wait until one of our friends takes his to the bank to get notarized, and he can ask them.

As far as I know the notary should have a state seal, normally in the form of a stamp. The notary that works in my office has a seal that is an embosser (leaves a raised stamp of the seal on the paper) while another notary copied the seal onto the affidavit by rubbing over her raised seal with pencil. We had 3 affidavits notarized by 3 different notaries and they all were able to produce a seal. Check with your bank, most banks have a notary that may be able to help you out, however the person that has written the affidavit and will be swearing to it must be present. But I would not leave it blank, the government may not consider it really notarized without a state seal.

Hello to my fellow Visa Journey friends. I am gathering a few Sworn Affidavits. I am using the example supplied on VJ as my template. A woman in my office is a notary, so I had her look over a draft of an affidavit. She said it all looked good except she had one question.

I was reading the instructions and it says to write on the envelope and the cover letter the form and Removal of Conditions on Residence. It also says to provide the A#. It is a stupid question, but is it safe and should I write the A# on the envelope?

Good Morning my fellow VJ family,

My wife has her Biometric Appointment on April 8th. What happens at this appointment as far as her residency is concerned. We did receive the NOA1 which states her residency has been extended 1 year. Will they or could we ask them for the I-551 stamp? Will they take her Permanent Residency Cardwhich doesn't expire until April 21st? I will be with her, but we want to be prepared for what we should do.

Both our NOA1 and Biometric letter were mailed the same day and received the same day.

The notice says that she was granted a 1 year extension. So when we go for the Biometrics is there anything that we need do do while we are there? I remember reading about getting a stamp or something for the extension????? Also do they take her Permanent Resident Card????

IMO: something wasn't clear to them, and now you have to provide that what they need from you in order to, hopefully, grant you the Visa.


You said you get paid in cash, maybe that is common in your country, but since you don't get salary specifications, why don't you ask your employer to set up a letter stating what you make a month and stating how long you work for your employer. Your employer should know what he paid you each and every single month (they need to keep that in the "system") and tell him to print that out.

Anyways, back to topic, OP I just think you should call them and ask if you can pay a certain amount per month. Let's say 50 or 100 dollars. 22000 for a 3 day stay is ridiculous and it should be covered by the government, I believe!

CanadaNOA2 What to do next

I am in the same stage as you are. I received our NOA2 May 31st (after 7 long months), and I called today and they already received our package.


Your list is correct.. Package3 is a list of the forms you have to send to the Embassy/Consulate (DS-230/part 1, DS-156, DS156K) Affidit of support form I-134 is what you have to take with you to the interview. These 4 forms = package3!!


Me and Aaron will also send in our forms DS-230/part1, DS-156 and DS-156K as soon as US Consulate in Amsterdam received our petition.



About the address you have to send these forms to, depends on what your Consulate/Embassy is =)
